Subject: Trick-or-Treat: Primer

We are (re)introducing Trick-or-Treat (ToT) back into EG with some new twists. ToT will be taking the place of EG's companion event that uses SimuCoin entries, similar to Deep Sea Diving and Delirium.

The premise is pretty simply, you'll enter the area and then KNOCK on the doors. Each entry will earn you up to ten "treats." After you've knocked on a door, you won't be able to know on the same one for thirty seconds. That means you'll need to move around the area to get all your knocks in. The area may be a bit familiar, but it's an old location that is now beached on the shores of Caligos.

You'll also get "tricks" from time to time. These will not impact your ten treats. By tricks, I mean angered spirits that want to make you like them! You'll need to dispatch them before being able to knock again. The area is not instanced, however we are deploying a new tactic with creatures that will debut this run. The person who knocks will be the only person the undead can attack. Anyone else can attack it though, so if you need help, get a friend to come join you! In fact, we recommend you explore the area in pairs or small groups to stay safe. If you run away, it will follow you and immediately try to strike you. If you end up leaving the area without releasing the undead, it will wait around for you in a special area. If it ends up killing you, it will be satisfied and you'll be able to knock again once you're back up on your feet.

When you knock, you'll get one of the following treats:

  • Seashells (80%)
  • a pair of species (10%)
  • a piece of candy (10%)

The species are the quest item this year. The candy is an all new collectible. We'll be posting details on the candy shortly. The candy can either be eaten (yum) or be traded in for prizes.

One update to Trick-or-Treat.

ToT will drop Trove tokens. The quest (species) item drop will now be either that or a Trove token (straight 50/50). Entering the Trove will qualify you for 7 hours of accessing the Trove as well.

We are going to be staggering the opening of Trick-or-Treat with games. Games will open first. Trick-or-Treat will open sometime shortly after.

We had a beta run in Platinum late Friday/early Saturday morning. With the communities help, I made some updates that should make the experience more fun.

  • Upon exiting, you'll be healed.
  • Creatures are built from zombies (they were banshees, never use banshees).
  • Creature spawn rate was reduced from 33% to 25% of all knocks.
  • There is now an exit inside if you wish to forfeit your entry. This really should only be used if you need to get out of there (injury, no way to attack undead, etc).
  • You will automatically target the undead you spawn.
  • If you die, you won't be swept out. You can depart, but others can raise you inside.
  • Upon entering, your drop room is randomized to help spread everyone out.
  • Knock timer reduced from 120 seconds to 30 seconds before you can knock on the same door.

Hi everyone!

We've added an azure-robed ghostly cleric to Trick-or-Treating. She will wander around, give good messaging, and... Oh, yea! If you die, she'll raise you for free!

10/15/2020 Seashell Updates and Instant Experience

Hey everyone, going through some feedback on Trick-or-Treating, we're going to be doing some updates later today. It's not something I like to do after an event starts, but we have a whole month still and I'd like to make the experience better for everyone. If you've been running the event outside the GIFTBOX awards, please shoot me an email and we'll get you compensated.

Knocking on doors will occasionally award 100x more seashells. It's not guaranteed. If you use sewer caches at Duskruin as a baseline to how often they'll drop this multiplier, it will be quite a bit more frequent.

You'll get credit for each undead you kill inside, up to 10, that awards you 25 experience after you're moved out of the event. This can saturate you.

These two updates will be live within a couple hours of this post.

And this isn't an update, but it's been live the entire time, candy can be sold to the attendant for 25 seashells as well if you're not interested in those rewards.

10/15/2020 Increased Experience, Selling Candy

Okay, we've made some adjustments and this will be live at roughly 8:15pm ET.

We've decided to update the numbers a little bit from the original post I made a few hours ago.

You'll be awarded 100 experience per creature killed in Trick-or-Treating upon leaving the area (finishing your knocks). So if you ran into 3 creatures, it will be 300 bonus experience on the way out after everything is done. If you are already saturated, it will be 100 instant experience. This is on top of killing the creatures.

You will sometimes be awarded a small bag of seashells that will be between 100 and 200 seashells. And occasionally you'll be awarded between 1000 and 2000 seashells. There are no special announcements or anything, and the seashells are automatically redeemed.

Wrapped candy can be sold for 25 seashells at the Junker's attendant.

We're not going to be making any changes to candy at this time, as we still feel it's a good value for 10% of the drops inside the Trick-or-Treat area.

10/04/2021 2021 Updates

Hey everyone, as we gear up for the games to open, I just want to make sure some updates are announced ahead of time so that you can make a decision on if Trick-or-Treat (ToT) is right for you.

Last year, we introduced some instant experience as a reward which I think we overcorrected on the number. This year, that instant experience will be 25 instead of the 100 it was last year. You'll still be able to gain all the exp per "trick" you find (plus killing the trick), it's just the bonus instant exp at the end is being reduced.

As detailed in the Treasure Trove Updates thread, the rate of Trove tokens will be reduced to 5% from 50% per entry and the value to sell the token will be increased 20x (from 125 to 2500).

There is a very rare drop that will be an invitation to the Eve of the Reunion event that GM Thandiwe has talked about. There are a finite number of these invites, and when they're all claimed, there will not be anymore. This does take one of your KNOCKs in TOT, but it's considered a special event that can randomly happen when you don't hit a "trick" or a "treat."
