A character's hitpoint value is a number which represents how much damage the character can recieve before dying. There are certain critical hits that will kill a character regardless of what this value is.
A character's maximum hitpoint value is based on their constitution and their race. For example, a dark elf has a maximum hitpoint value of 120. A dark elf character with a constitution bonus of +15 would have a maximum hitpoint value of 135.
The Combat Toughness combat maneuver can also increase hitpoints for warriors, rogues, monks, and paladins by 15, 25, or 35 hitpoints depending on rank.
