This log was widely circulated years ago and is being posted here for amusement and prosperity. The event is rather famous amongst folk that have occupied the Rest over the years. For those unfamiliar with the story, it is how Shakrean exposed and punished a well known (at the time) thief, as told from Shakrean's point of view.

Shakrean Foils the Thief

You carefully begin to examine a weathered fel chest for traps...

Peering closely into the lock, you spy a tiny onyx scarab wedged into the lock mechanism. The scarab's shell is covered with spiky inward-curving protrusions which resemble fangs.

It looks like a somewhat difficult trap (about -130).

You still have a good enough picture of the trap in your mind, that you could try to disarm it.

Roundtime: 16 sec.
sJR>
You feel at full magical power again.
sJR>
sJR> You say in Elven, "Black bug on this one." sJR>l [River's Rest, Town Commons] Fresh green grass, green as the greenest emerald, is soft underfoot and a pleasing foreground for a weathered wooden bench resting in the shade of a graceful willow tree. Birdsong fills the air and intermingles with the voices of folk who stroll through the commons, and on occasion stop to exchange a tale or two with friends they meet along their way. A dusty path to the south and a riverstone walkway to the north are joined by a tall evergreen hedge which borders the edges of the lawn. You also see a large wooden barrel. Also here: Rozcoe, Lord Roemaster, Lady Merjinia, Nolat, Lord Sabreon, Dyfer, Dycendarg who is seated, Zonda, Gorock who is lying down, Sabreo, Valgo, Lady Triannia, Lady Llerolann, Bludy Obvious paths: none. You are now speaking the Common language. sJ> You say, "Black bug on this one." sJ>disarm my chest sJ> Having discovered a trap on the chest you begin to carefully attempt to disarm it... You carefully nudge the scarab free of its prison without disturbing the lock too much. The scarab falls from the lock and onto the ground in front of you. Roundtime: 27 sec. You say, "And, it's down. Be careful." sJR> Roemaster says, "okay. and thank you very much shakrean" sJR> Roemaster smiles at you. sJR> sJR>disarm onyx scarab from my sack You carefully begin to examine the scarab for traps... Knowing how delicate magical runes can be, you carefully scrape a few extra lines into the markings, hoping to alter their meaning and defeat the spell they may hold. *scritch scritch* If that had been any easier, you could have done it blindfolded. sJ> Drektor comes out of hiding. A spiked onyx scarab suddenly darts forward and launches itself at Drektor! Blood jets forth as a spiked onyx scarab burrows into Drektor's abdomen! ... 25 points of damage! Vicious strike punctures intestines! He is stunned! sJ>smirk You smirk. You say, "Idiot." sJ> You see a lump moving about just under the skin on Drektor's abdomen! Drektor looks weak with shock and pain! sJ> Roemaster put a badly damaged maoral chest in his spidersilk cloak. sJ> Roemaster just opened an imflass threaded war harness. You leave Triannia's group. Drektor is already a member of Triannia's group. s> You see a lump moving about just under the skin on Drektor's abdomen! Drektor looks weak with shock and pain! s> You join Triannia. sJ> You gesture while calling upon the lesser spirits to aid you with the Spirit Guide spell... Your spell is ready. sJ>You gesture. Your surroundings blur for a moment . . . [River's Rest, Targon's Square] This large, welcoming square is set away from the center of town and paved with large stone blocks. The crowds that gather here do not seem to crowd the openness of the square, but to make it feel warm and welcoming. Set off to one side, a small tavern seems to attract many in the crowd, and each time its doors open, sounds of revelry spill out into the open to attract even more. The River's Rest Inn stands nestled back in the brambles that guard the eastern side of the tavern. You also see a large wooden barrel. Also here: Drektor who is kneeling, Lady Triannia Obvious paths: north, west. Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds. sJ> A spiked onyx scarab suddenly bursts out of Drektor's chest and crawls across his skin for a moment, before tunneling back in! Drektor bites back a scream! sJ> You are overwhelmed by an intense wave of disorientation. An acidic bile taste hangs in the back of your throat, making it difficult to swallow. As you try to recover some semblance of balance, an intense series of spasms from deep in your bowels forces its entire contents to work its way up your throat. It takes every ounce of personal effort to keep yourself from the irresistible urge to vomit! Roundtime: 54 sec. You say, "LEave, so he doesn't kill anyone else." You nod to Triannia. KJR> A spiked onyx scarab suddenly bursts out of Drektor's chest and crawls across his skin for a moment, before tunneling back in! Drektor bites back a scream! Drektor stands up. KJR> Drektor gives a single weak gasp, and suddenly drops quite dead! * Drektor drops dead at your feet! The brilliant luminescence fades from around Drektor. KJR> You recover somewhat from your nausea. KJR> You feel at full magical power again. KJR> A spiked onyx scarab suddenly erupts out of Drektor's chest and drops to the ground! KJR> Quicker than the eye can follow, a spiked onyx scarab suddenly darts forward and lauches itself at Triannia! Triannia avoids the scarab!
