Chainspear - This designation references an item and the functional script set applied to it. These weapons are spear-based and designed to work either via pole-arm use or thrown weapons use. The weapon is in essence 3 parts; the spear, the spear head, and the shaft. When hurled the part of the weapon that is hurled is the spear head, leaving the shaft in your hands. All 3 parts inspect as modified spears.

Spear

a segmented claw-tipped spear - The head of the spear is formed from black glaes and worked into the form of a five-fingered claw, with each point honed to fine point. The natural slight translucence of the black glaes reveals incarnadine veins threading the head, the bright crimson hue overtaking the black at each claw point, as though the black claw was dipped in blood. The claw-shaped glaes head is securely attached to an ebon-stained lor shaft by a band of eahnor, giving the overall impression of a manacle-bound arm. A strange necrotic haze radiates from the spear.
There appears to be something written on it.

In the Common language, it reads:
Infernal Grasp

Inspect:
You carefully inspect your claw-tipped spear.

After a careful inspection you determine that a segmented claw-tipped spear requires skill in polearms to use effectively.

It looks like this item has been mainly crafted out of glaes.

Spear Head

This part of the weapon, when stuck in a critter, is added to it's inventory. When the critter is looted or it misses the head is visible in the room and cannot be picked up.

Script Specifics

  • Chainspears cannot be enchanted over 8x
  • Chainspears can be ensorcelled, but currently the ensorcell will not work when thrown. This has been BUG'd but has not yet been addressed.
  • Blessings work on this item either via attack or hurled
  • The attack messaging is currently missing a line break. This has been BUG'd but has not yet been addressed.

Analyze

You analyze your claw-tipped spear and sense that there is no recorded information on that item. It may or may not be able to be worked on by a merchant alterer.

You can tell that the spear is as light as it can get.

Pole-arm Attack Example with Flare

When utilized as a pole-arm instead of thrown the chainspear has a script-based flare. Below is an example of the weapon when used as a pole-arm and it's flare.

You thrust with a segmented claw-tipped spear at a jungle troll chieftain!
Your claw-tipped spear separates smoothly into long, eahnor-linked segments! AS: +218 vs DS: +132 with AvD: +28 + d100 roll: +2 = +116
... and hit for 5 points of damage!
Thrust glances off the troll chieftain's knee without a lot of effect.

** The glaes head of your spear catches across a jungle troll chieftain's left leg! **
   ... 15 points of damage!
Slash to the troll chieftain's left leg hits high!
Kinda makes your knees weak, huh?
Roundtime: 5 sec.

Hurled Attack and Retraction Example

The RT for pulling the shaft is variable, generally 3-4 RT

Your claw-tipped spear lashes forth to its fullest extent, separating smoothly into long, eahnor-linked segments! With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a claw-shaped glaes spear head trailed by a dark eahnor chain into flight.
You throw a claw-shaped glaes spear head at a jungle troll!
  AS: +534 vs DS: +121 with AvD: +21 + d100 roll: +39 = +473
... and hit for 118 points of damage!
Shot shatters shoulder and severs right arm!
The troll's bamboo-hilted machete falls to the ground.
   The jungle troll is stunned!
The glaes spear head is lodged in a jungle troll's right arm!
Roundtime: 4 sec.

>pull shaft
You deftly pull back on the lor shaft, causing the glaes spear head to retract and clack back into place! A claw-shaped glaes spear head trailed by a dark eahnor chain is torn violently from a jungle troll!
   ... 15 points of damage!
The jungle troll's arm twists oddly but snaps right back.
With a subtle skittering of fine chain, the claw-tipped spear is made whole again.
Roundtime: 3 sec.

Verb Traps

VERB FIRST THIRD
WAVE You whip the claw-tipped spear forward, splaying the segments of its shaft and eahnor chain in front of you. With a flick of the wrist, you send the segments snapping back together with series of quick clacks.

Roundtime: 3 sec.

XXX whips his claw-tipped spear forward, splaying the segments of its shaft and eahnor chain in front of him. With a flick of the wrist, he sends the segments snapping back together with a series of quick clacks.
TURN You grasp the claw-tipped spear at its center and rapidly rotate your wrist, sending the base and glaes tip of the weapon flying in opposite directions, trailed by eahnor-linked segments! Reversing the maneuver, you allow the claw-tipped spear to snap back together with a smooth elegance.
