Kalyrra (prime)/2021-11-09 She Screams Volumes
Kalyrra found herself stopping abruptly as she wandered through Western Harbor late one evening. Something in the pit of her stomach was telling her to check the jetty around the corner instead of continuing to her intended destination. Surely no one would be on the narrow walkway in the stormy weather that had plagued...well, just about everywhere for the last week or so, but she decided it was best to go have a look. Each step she took along the stone path gradually revealed a silhouette standing at the far end. Cautiously, she continued forward with a hand on the hilt of her dagger. When she was close enough to determine who was present, she breathed a sigh of relief and let her hand drop away from her weapon.
The mystery figure proved to be Medijine, defiantly pressed up against the eastern part of the wrought iron railing as if she was challenging the waves themselves. She spared her new company only a passing glance before turning her gaze back to the gloomy horizon. The expression on the girl's face hardened almost immediately. Kalyrra felt so much sorrow for the girl. It was incredibly hard to lose your parents so young.
It would be difficult to hear each other with the overwhelming roar of the waves crashing against the rocks below. So, in an attempt to help the girl, and alleviate some of her own frustration at the same time, Kalyrra waited for the next set of waves. When the sound had reached its crescendo, she loosed a scream out over the water. The cathartic cry was almost completely lost in the howling winds and roiling seas. What would have garnered her concerned stares anywhere else was met with a simple look of puzzlement.
Kalyrra shrugged at the bewildered girl. Medijine stared at her for a moment before looking back out at the churning waters with an expression that was one part determination and one part confusion. Then, she closed her eyes for a moment or two. As the swells rolled in and the sound of the surf increased, she suddenly opened her eyes wide and sent her own scream out into the misty air.
The emotions the younger girl put so much effort into hiding were easily detected by someone who had grown accustomed to hiding some of the same. Masking your true emotions became easier the longer it was practiced. This was a helpful skill to know in certain types of jobs or situations, but it could have unfortunate effects on relationships and daily interactions if employed too often.
Screaming at the depths was not the healthiest way to go about dealing with the problem. Kalyrra knew this, of course. She also knew it could help. She could only hope it would aid the girl, too...at least for the night. There would be time to find healthier ways for her to cope in the morning. For now, she needed to help settle her and get her safely indoors again for some rest.
When the crashing and splashing of the sea intensified once again, the two screamed together with all their might. And when Kalyrra looked over at the girl again, the raging storm behind her eyes seemed just a bit calmer.
