Log

Kayse affably announces, "Fair evening, everyone and welcome to the Darkstone Bay Consortium's' monthly trade talks."

Talinvor nods in greeting.

Alisaire inclines her head.

Kayse discloses, "These events serve as a vehicle to educate the community on trade, mercantile services, and imports/exports within Wehnimer s Landing and the surrounding areas."

Meril tilts her head slightly, turning her attention to Kayse. She regards Kayse in a measured fashion, collecting her thoughts.

Alisaire mildly says, "Good evening."

Speaking to Aliashyrah, Geijon mentions, "New building."

Kayse warmly introduces, "This evening, I would like to welcome my amisar, Tikba Liwan, who will be giving us a brief overview of the mineral and metal trade in Wehnimer's Landing."

You smile at Kayse.

[Consortium, Assembly Hall - 32516] (u336186)

The walls of the assembly hall are paneled with dark wood, and several thick blue rugs are spread about the sturdy wooden floor. A stage rises up against the far wall, where several armchairs and a high podium stand. The center of the chamber houses rows of cushioned chairs, and behind them hangs a crisp banner with the crest of a red lion before a crossed hammer and pick on a field of silver. You also see the Aenternoll disk, the Elliathe disk, the Balantine disk, the Kelfyr disk, the hammered silver Meliyara disk, the sparking Dendum disk, the Geijon disk, the Emperia disk, the repousse copper Perigourd disk raised in leafy designs, the web-draped Missoni disk, the rectangular Yukito disk fashioned of oiled tanik, a rough oak table with some stuff on it, a black ebonwood door and a heavy blue brocade curtain.

Also here: Alisaire, Magister Raelee, Town Councilor Kiyna, Grand Lord Talinvor, Earthdiver, Aenternoll, Sir Balantine, Lady Elliathe who is sitting, High Lord Grutak who is sitting, Town Councilor Kayse, Lady Arenglae who is sitting, Lord Sorlu, Lady Aliashyrah, Kelfyr who is sitting, Kippe, Lady Meliyara, Bakarus, Dendum who is sitting, Lady Emperia who is sitting, Sir Geijon who is sitting, Town Councilor Vaemyr who is sitting, Perigourd, Hospitaller Yukito, Missoni, Commodore Jaysehn, Chatelaine Traiva who is sitting, Meril who is sitting, Mistress Lithyia who is sitting

Kayse adds, "She is quite knowledge on the subject in mining in general, so I am happy that she was willing to tackle this topic."

Missoni applauds you warmly.

Bakarus gazes at you.

Kayse glances expectantly at you.

Lithyia applauds you.

Bakarus nods approvingly.

Kayse applauds you.

Speaking to Geijon, Aliashyrah says, "I have had the pleasure of seeing it once before. It is rather magnificent."

Bakarus applauds.

You nod politely.

Traiva calmly flutters her wings at you to an unheard rhythm.

Talinvor applauds you.

(Kayse moves to the back of the room.)

Talinvor folds his arms over his chest.

You walk behind a high podium.

Drawing in a deep, focused breath, you pensively tug at your grey surplice's neckline while attempting to identify the composition, and any distinguishing aspects of, the air's makeup, quality, and contributing scents.

Speaking to Aliashyrah, Geijon says, "Lot of food for certain."

Geijon nods.

Kayse takes a moment to observe you.

You appreciatively greet, "Thank you all for coming tonight."

You glance appreciatively around the room.

You wryly admit, "I must confess I know little about trade."

Kippe gazes thoughtfully at his Tehir spiced coffee.

You evenly note, "But I do have many years of experience mining."

You acknowledge, "I have not had occasion to mine on Elanthia, so I apologize if I do not know the Common word for some terms."

Traiva gives a sidelong glance at you.

You diplomatically explain, "Some things I had heard at previous meetings sparked my interest in the Consortium's baystone mine, and I decided to learn what I could about its operation."

Bakarus turns an inquisitive ear toward you.

You eruditely continue, "Doing so required understanding the history, and the geography, of the Landing mining industry. It is this knowledge that I hope to share with you tonight."

Sir Cryheart just came through a heavy blue brocade curtain.

You loyally commend, "I am very grateful to Kayse for arranging a discussion with Amos for me. He was able to answer many questions I had about the baystone mine. I have every confidence the mine is being managed well."

Lithyia turns an inquisitive ear toward you.

You nod gratefully at Kayse.

Lithyia leans back.

Kayse smiles at you.

Kayse nods once to you.

You begin, "To begin with, mining, simply put, is the process of searching in the ground for valuables."

You retrieve a dwarven mining pick from one of the concealed pockets lining your white flyrsilk toqua.

Lithyia nods to you.

Perigourd scratches at his beard.

You heft the pick a few times, but learn nothing more about it.

(Tikba adjusts her grip briefly, then suddenly swings the mining pick back to rest over her shoulder in a single practiced motion.)

Aliashyrah smiles quietly to herself.

You state, "If we went out into the street here, and dug down, through the cobblestones, we would find loam underneath."

Kayse glances down.

You sagaciously continue, "Under the loam, a layer of softer rock, and much further below that, a harder rock."

Kayse ponders.

You didactically elaborate, "Within these layers of rock, veins of metal may be found. Once found, the rock must be removed, then refined to extract the metal."

Imperatrix Lylia just came through a heavy blue brocade curtain.

You smile at Lylia.

Lylia inclines her head.

You briefly explain, "The pick is used to break the rock wall and lever chunks out. The shovel, to move the rocks, and dig further."

Lylia smiles at you.

You warn, "Tunnels in the earth do not wish to stay open. Timbers must be placed to provide support and prevent collapse."

Lithyia nods.

You suggest, "Magic can be used to aid in mining. Fire and water can be used together to crack the rock face. Valueless rock can be disintegrated to avoid spoil. Divination can tell you where to dig."

You evenly note, "Some of these arts are also dangerous to the miners. They are not often used without good reason."

You evenly add, "Gemstone mining is much the same, except that gemstones are much rarer, and deeper in the earth. More time is taken, and there is more danger."

Lithyia nods to you.

Bakarus nods understandingly.

You continue, "Now, the history of mining in the Landing begins with iron."

You retrieve some iron ore from one of the concealed pockets lining your white flyrsilk toqua.

You carefully place some iron ore on the floor.

You point at some iron ore.

Kayse gazes with interest at some iron ore.

You mildly deadpan, "For those of you who are Rooks, you may be glad to learn that this rock is well-suited for flinging at those who disagree with you."

Yukito tilts his head toward you, examining you intently as the tip of one ear twitches briefly.

Sorlu raises an eyebrow.

Sorlu glances appraisingly around the room.

Lithyia snickers.

Lylia flashes a quick grin at you.

Missoni gazes in amusement at you.

You sagely begin, "When Wehnimer's Landing was founded, the settlers desperately needed tools and defenses."

Kayse gazes in amusement at you.

You lecture, "They were fortunate to discover that the Lyserian Hills nearby have plentiful deposits of iron."

You fancifully suggest, "Before the construction of the palisade, it must have been a quick stroll northeastwards from the Landing to work."

Dendum shifts his weight.

Sir Guarrin just came through a heavy blue brocade curtain.

You point northeast.

Kayse nods understandingly to you.

You mention, "These early mines were what we call tla'sah, mines dug into the face of hills, the simplest way to begin a mine."

You thoughtfully continue, "Iron is so plentiful in the hills that these mines were quite productive. Indeed, the remains of an iron smelter can still be found in one of them."

You lightly joke, "It may still work. Perhaps one could smelt a bar of iron there even today."

You dismissively say, "Of course nobody would do such a thing. The iron would be very low quality."

Balantine grins.

Kayse thoughtfully taps a finger against her lips.

You didactically elaborate, "As the Landing continued to develop, and the value of these mines became apparent, larger, more sophisticated mines were built, employing Hendorian engineers to design them."

You plainly warn, "Digging deeper into the earth is hard. More timbering is required, and more care."

You thoughtfully explain, "If you go deep enough you will encounter the yrrilth'sah, the level at which water begins to seep into the mine. The water must be removed to continue work, which is difficult."

You delicately mention, "The first mines were not engineered well enough to overcome these problems. After the first levels of these mines were dug out, they were eventually abandoned."

Missoni ponders.

You disapprovingly note, "Since then they have become overrun with monsters."

Lithyia frowns.

Kayse wrinkles her nose.

You continue, "The workers moved on to the other mines nearby. Even today, iron is one of the Landing's most significant exports."

Perigourd scratches at his beard.

Kiyna gazes with interest at you.

Kayse nods knowingly to you.

You neutrally conclude, "And so matters rested...until the arrival of the Darkstone Bay Consortium."

Geijon agrees with Perigourd.

Sorlu nods.

You retrieve a trilliant-cut baystone ring from one of the concealed pockets lining your white flyrsilk toqua.

You carefully place a trilliant-cut baystone ring on the floor.

You point at a trilliant-cut baystone ring.

Kayse gazes fondly at a trilliant-cut baystone ring.

Missoni gazes thoughtfully at a trilliant-cut baystone ring.

You carefully begin, "A few years back, Lord Amos received information that a unique material lay beneath one of the old iron mines here in the Landing."

Lithyia gazes with interest at a trilliant-cut baystone ring.

Yukito gazes thoughtfully at a trilliant-cut baystone ring.

You neutrally recount, "The mines being abandoned, he purchased the land, and hired a team of dwarven miners."

Lithyia nods.

You politely instruct, "Dwarves are well-known to be the most skilled miners on Elanthia. They have long ago mastered the arts of timbering, shaft digging and water removal that other miners still struggle with."

Grutak says, "Dwarves make the best miners."

Sorlu raises an eyebrow.

Lithyia agrees with Grutak.

You grin at Grutak.

You nod in agreement at Grutak.

You interestedly observe, "They began their exploration at a much deeper depth than the previous mine. It is the deepest mine in the Lyserian Hills, or nearly so."

Grutak says, "Also fantastic sappers."

Kayse gazes with interest at you.

You evenly report, "In addition to the expected wealth of iron, a previously unknown gemstone was found, now called baystone."

You tap a trilliant-cut baystone ring.

Lithyia smiles.

You evenly elaborate, "As you all know, the excavation of baystone and its crafting into jewelry has since become a profitable Consortium enterprise."

Balantine rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Lylia gazes with interest at a trilliant-cut baystone ring.

Lithyia nods.

You approvingly pronounce, "I have satisfied myself that the miners are well-treated and content with their lot. They are not overworked, nor deprived of anything they may want."

Traiva calmly flutters her wings at you to an unheard rhythm.

Missoni ponders.

You approvingly mention, "The Red Watch guards the operation to ensure that no monsters may attack them at their labors."

Cryheart says, "Good."

You nod once at Cryheart.

Lithyia nods to you.

Kippe looks thoughtfully at you.

Grutak says, "Red watch..."

Speaking to Grutak, Kayse informs, "Amos' hired help."

You explain, "Lord Amos has forces of his own, to defend the mines, and this building."

Lithyia nods at Kayse.

Grutak nods slowly.

Kayse nods slowly to you.

Grutak says, "I see."

You say, "They have been helping with the defense of the Landing recently, as they are citizens here as well."

You nod approvingly.

You tentatively speculate, "Given the depth of the excavation, it is possible that baystone may underlie other iron mines in the area. Further expansion is a possibility, given the value of the existing mine."

Grutak asks, "Where did they come from?"

Lithyia raises an eyebrow in your direction.

Grutak shakes his head.

Kayse evenly says, "Let's reserve questions until the end."

Grutak says, "Sorry for the interruption."

You smile at Grutak.

Grutak agrees with Kayse.

Lithyia smiles at Grutak.

You nod appreciatively at Grutak.

You thoughtfully consider, "Indeed, given the speed of this discovery, it is hard to say what else may be discovered under the hills, given sufficient will to seek it out."

Kayse nods knowingly at Lylia.

You neutrally conclude, "We must see what the future holds."

You smile.

Sorlu smiles.

Alisaire nods once to you.

Elliathe slowly empties her lungs.

Kippe smiles at you.

You say, "If there are any questions, now, I would be happy to answer what I can."

Grutak asks, "Where did they come from?"

Grutak says, "Lord Amos and his people."

You grin wryly at Grutak.

Missoni slowly empties her lungs.

You glance inquiringly at Kayse.

Speaking to Grutak, Kayse says, "Amos hired the guards through his own process."

Grutak asks, "And where did Amos come from?"

Grutak inclines his ear, listening intently.

Speaking to Grutak, Kayse says, "Amos has been a citizen of this town for a couple years now."

Lylia raises her hand.

Grutak nods slowly.

You wryly say, "As many of us in the Landing, he came from somewhere he preferred not to be."

Grutak says, "Thank you."

Speaking to Grutak, Kayse says, "I do not recall where he came from. I was away on travels and it has never been a point of discussion."

Meliyara gazes in amusement at you.

Kelfyr raises his hand.

Kiyna grins at you.

Kayse starts chuckling at you!

Lithyia begins chuckling at Missoni!

Grutak asks, "But he is a citizen though?"

Kayse nods at Grutak.

You nod in agreement at Grutak.

You turn to face Lylia.

Grutak adopts an agreeable expression.

Guarrin whispers something to Kayse.

Missoni raises her hand.

Speaking wryly to Grutak, Traiva says, "Very much so."

Dendum says, "He signed the book to run for Mayor...and lost."

Lylia clears her throat.

Kayse says, "He served as Steward of the Guilds for awhile and even ran for Mayor but was beat by Thadston."

Lylia says, "While it is fascinating to some to talk about the hired hands or layers of administration involved in mining, I am far more interested in the mining itself, if you would like to address that."

Emperia shifts her eyes to Lylia.

Kayse nods slowly at Guarrin.

You nod in agreement at Lylia.

Earthdiver asks, "What is the current limitation on how deep our mines can reach? Timbers? Water removal? Bravery?"

Speaking evenly to Lylia, you say, "That is where I have the most experience."

Speaking to you, Lylia says, "We have heard of baystone being a new acquisition from the region; is there any indication of the more traditional precious metals or gems locally? I have heard emeralds and other beryls are relatively common."

Kayse notes, "Earthdiver's question first. Then Lylia's, perhaps."

Lylia nods appreciatively.

Kayse nods appreciatively at Traiva.

Speaking to Earthdiver, you say, "If you mean the other iron mines in operation, perhaps motivation would be the word."

Emperia nods at Lylia.

Lithyia grins at Traiva.

Speaking to Earthdiver, you say, "Iron is plentiful in the hills. There has been no need to dig as deeply as Amos has to produce all the Landing has required."

Kayse smiles at Missoni.

Earthdiver nods to you.

Lylia nods at Emperia.

Lithyia nods at Traiva.

You turn to face Lylia.

Bakarus ponders.

Grutak agrees with Sorlu.

Speaking curiously in Dhe'narsi to Alisaire, Talinvor asks something you don't understand.

Earthdiver says, "It's something of an interest of mine as well."

The earth rumbles threateningly from somewhere deep below Earthdiver.

Speaking to Talinvor, Alisaire says, "Not precisely. They were not employed, but they did mine there of their own accord."

Speaking evenly to Lylia, you say, "The Landing does produce a fair number of gemstones of various types. Emeralds are certainly common. Even diamonds can be seen."

Speaking to Talinvor, Alisaire says, "The dwarves predated the current spread of humans in that corner of the region."

(Grutak adjusts his hat.)

Lylia nods to you.

Lithyia smiles at Grutak.

Lithyia blushes a nice shade of dark red.

Sorlu surreptitiously glances between Lithyia and Grutak.

Missoni flashes a quick grin.

Sorlu smiles quietly to himself.

Speaking quietly in Dhe'narsi to Alisaire, Talinvor says something you don't understand.

Speaking evenly to Lylia, you say, "The mines in the Lysierian Hills, specifically, are not as well suited to producing gems. They tend to be deeper in the earth."

Balantine says, "The dwarves also sell rubies in the caravansary south of town."

Yukito glances at Lithyia.

Alisaire nods understandingly at Talinvor.

Lithyia raises an eyebrow in Yukito's direction.

You say, "As I mentioned, the Hendorian-engineered mines have simply not attempted such work."

You turn to face Missoni.

Grutak asks, "Will the Darkstone Gems be available on the market?"

Speaking to Talinvor, Alisaire says, "Neh. Vorn Ahvis was the dwarven city. It was abandoned, and then settled atop and renamed as it is today."

Missoni smiles at you.

Dendum collects a baystone latticework bracelet from a large compartment inside the grey leather case.

Guarrin nods at Alisaire.

Dendum offers Grutak a baystone latticework bracelet.

Grutak accepts Dendum's latticework bracelet.

Talinvor nods appreciatively.

Speaking to you, Missoni says, "I am rather interested in the subject of abandoned mines."

Grutak takes a moment to observe his latticework bracelet.

Speaking to you, Lylia says, "Thank you."

Sorlu chuckles to himself.

Missoni curiously asks, "Is there any use for an abandoned mine such as the ones you spoke of, aside from havens for unfriendly creatures? Or do they simply remain...as holes in the ground? Are they very dangerous to venture into?"

You smile at Lylia.

You nod at Lylia.

Kayse instructs, "Please raise your hand if you have a question so it's not too chaotic to answer if you have one."

Elliathe smiles at Kayse.

Grutak offers Dendum a baystone latticework bracelet.

Yukito smiles at Lithyia.

Lylia gazes with interest at Missoni.

Balantine says, "The silver mine in Talador had an interesting history."

Lithyia leans on Grutak.

Dendum accepts Grutak's latticework bracelet.

Lithyia grins.

Speaking to Dendum, Grutak says, "Nice looking."

Lylia says, "Fascinating question."

Missoni blushes a nice shade of dark red.

Lady Landrai just came through a heavy blue brocade curtain.

Speaking lightly to Missoni, you say, "I fear, to my eyes, an abandoned mine is little more than a hole in the ground which is deep enough to be dangerous."

Guarrin nods at Missoni.

Vaemyr nods at Kayse.

Speaking to Lylia, Missoni admits, "It seems odd for all that labor to go to waste."

Speaking to Grutak, Dendum says, ""There are some baystone items for sale here....very blue...very much rocks."

Kelfyr raises his hand.

Lylia nods in agreement.

Missoni nods slowly to you.

Lithyia nods at Dendum.

Speaking to you, Missoni says, "That is unfortunate."

Alisaire chuckles to herself.

Talinvor raises his hand.

Lithyia says, "The baystone earrings I have purchased here, are favorites. Very lovely indeed."

Speaking to Dendum, Grutak says, "I was thinking in terms of having the raw stuff for crafting and such."

Lithyia nods.

Speaking to Missoni, you say, "If you wished a hideaway, perhaps."

Grutak says, "I have a friend that makes shoes."

Grutak says, "Laeli."

Dendum drums his fingers thoughtfully against his chin and inhales the cedar-scented smoke smoldering away within his pipe deeply.

Missoni looks thoughtfully at you.

Lithyia beams happily at Grutak!

Speaking to Grutak, Dendum remarks, ""Might be some setting for shoes?"

Perigourd raises his hand.

Speaking amusedly to you, Missoni says, "I do not think I should be that desperate, I hope."

You grin at Missoni.

You turn to face Grutak.

You politely say, "Sir."

Grutak says, "Dunno, I don't make shoes... or anything really."

You nod at Grutak.

Grutak turns to face you.

Lithyia chuckles.

Grutak turns an inquisitive ear toward you.

Sorlu chuckles.

Kayse chuckles to herself.

Speaking to Grutak, Meliyara suggests, "Corpses?"

Lithyia grins at Sorlu.

Meliyara grins mischievously.

Lithyia chuckles to herself.

Speaking to Meliyara, Grutak says, "I do make those."

Speaking politely to Grutak, you ask, "I am sorry. I believe you had a question?"

Grutak grins at Meliyara.

Elliathe begins chuckling at Meliyara!

Geijon shifts his weight.

Speaking to you, Grutak says, "I was wondering if the ore or gem or whatever is available for crafters."

You nod understandingly at Grutak.

Grutak says, "So that folks can make there own things and such."

You say, "The finished goods are available, in the store downstairs. I understand there are settings intended for shoes."

Lylia nods.

Lithyia nods to you.

Grutak says, "Well..."

Speaking to Grutak, Kayse asks, "Are you speaking of forging materials?"

Grutak holds up his hand and tilts it side to side in a so-so gesture.

Speaking to Kayse, Grutak says, "Sorta."

Speaking to Grutak, Kayse says, "If you have a request, let it be known and I will take it to Amos."

Grutak says, "I know that you can use things to make hilts."

You delicately say, "Amos has so far been careful about releasing the unfinished stone. I have seen only one such piece."

Geijon says, "Many reknowned Cobblers in Wehnimer's Landing."

Grutak says, "It's not so much a request."

Kayse removes a set of baystone settings from in her ebon tartan pea coat.

Kayse indicates a set of baystone settings as a possible option.

Lithyia says, "Please ask amos to expand the selection. It is a lovely stone."

Lithyia nods.

Kayse smiles at Lithyia.

Grutak says, "So lets say Lithyia here wants to make a down with baystone in it."

Bakarus grins.

Grutak asks, "Is she able to speak to someone and have that done?"

Lithyia grins.

Lylia nods in agreement at Lithyia.

Kayse mentions, "You can take the beautiful jewelry in the gift shop and have a talented merchant tweak the designs for you."

Grutak says, "Or can she simply buy some and wait til a merchant shows up."

Vaemyr nods at Kayse.

You nod at Grutak.

You say, "I think that may be the easiest course."

You vaguely say, "I have used baystone in such work."

You tap a six-tentacled star etched into a baystone cabochon that you are wearing.

Kayse put a set of baystone settings in her ebon tartan pea coat.

You turn to face Kelfyr.

You smile at Kelfyr.

Kelfyr nods to you.

Kelfyr asks, "Is baystone merely decorative or have other uses been discovered for the material?"

Lithyia says, "I will simply deck myself from head to toe in them."

Lithyia smirks.

You say, "No other uses are known to me."

Grutak says, "Yes but do you buy the raw baystone in your store? sorry if I am sounding obtuse."

Grutak nods at Vaemyr.

You smile at Grutak.

Kelfyr asks, "A follow-up: have they been actively explored?"

Grutak says, "I think I got my answer... thank you."

Speaking to Kelfyr, Raelee mentions, "Amos's follow-through on providing some for analysis has been... lacking."

You grin at Raelee.

Kayse chuckles.

Kelfyr nods at Raelee.

Bakarus gazes through the crystalline lens of his monocle, his eyes roving over every inch of Vaemyr.

Meril raises her hand.

Geijon glances at Raelee.

You say, "I was going to say that I understood Magister Svala to be taking an interest in that question."

You say, "But I fear she has answered us both."

Raelee says, "If I must disassemble a set of earrings, so be it."

Kelfyr smiles at you.

Guarrin grins at Geijon.

Raelee nods to you.

Kelfyr says, "Thank you."

Speaking to Raelee, Kayse notes, "They are lovely earrings."

Speaking to Raelee, Perigourd says, "In the name of research."

Missoni nods approvingly at Lithyia.

Speaking to Raelee, you say, "You may have this ring, after tonight."

(Lithyia flicks some crumbs off her gown.)

Speaking to Perigourd, Meliyara says, "Sacrifices must be made."

Raelee looks thoughtfully at you.

Raelee nods slowly to you.

You say, "Amos was also unwilling to lend me a piece for this talk."

Perigourd nods in agreement at Meliyara.

You grin wryly.

Grutak grins at Vaemyr.

You say, "It is mine to give."

You turn to face Talinvor.

Talinvor nods once.

Speaking to you, Geijon asks, "Well spent?"

Sorlu chuckles to himself.

Kayse indifferently says, "I got the raw stone when I had a choker made. It is gorgeous. So he is willing to part with chunks at times. For awhile the supply was low."

You grin at Geijon.

Geijon chuckles.

Lithyia nods at Kayse.

You say, "I am happy to have it here, for you all to see."

Missoni smiles.

Speaking to Kayse, Meliyara agrees, "I would imagine it takes quite some time for a mine to become operative and productive."

Kayse nods slowly at Meliyara.

Speaking amusedly to Meliyara, Kayse exclaims, "If we learned anything tonight it is just that!"

Kayse gazes admiringly at you.

Speaking politely to Talinvor, you ask, "Sh'rein. I believe you had a question?"

Speaking mischievously to Kayse, Meliyara says, "Just so."

Bakarus nods understandingly at Vaemyr.

Talinvor says, "Eii, rather long though."

Talinvor says, "Hm."

Talinvor rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Speaking quietly to you, Talinvor asks, "My apologies if I missed this. But you talked about iron mines, most of which reside either in the lyserian hills or near the coastal cliffs. These are outside the new barony's borders. You also mention Hendorian miners. Where are they mining this new material?"

Talinvor says, "And a follow up to this question as well, if that is alright."

Speaking to Talinvor, Lylia says, "I was thinking of asking something similar myself and am interested in knowing the answer."

You say, "I fear I have been unclear. When the larger mines were built, the Landing miners drew upon Hendoran expertise in designing them."

Geijon looks thoughtfully at Guarrin.

Missoni nods slowly.

You say, "Hendor has a long history of mining and smithing."

You say, "But they are not Imperially owned."

Sorlu smiles quietly to himself.

Talinvor says, "I'm not familiar with newer and larger mines that the Hendorians built. I may have been away too long in the east."

Talinvor rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Geijon chuckles.

Speaking to you, Grutak says, "Why does it matter if they are Imperialy owned. Seems an odd thing to bring up."

Geijon nods at Guarrin.

Alisaire inclines her head.

Sorlu smiles.

Meliyara absently chews on her lip, appearing to ponder possibilities and potential nuances.

Lithyia raises an eyebrow.

Guarrin shrugs slightly at Geijon.

You smile at Grutak.

Speaking thoughtfully to you, Talinvor says, "I do hope that the sentoph is not a location they've decided to start digging."

Talinvor says, "For obvious reasons."

Speaking to Grutak, you reassure, "Merely that I thought I might have been unclear."

Emperia shifts her eyes to Talinvor.

Grutak says, "Oh..."

Grutak nods.

Lithyia smiles at Grutak.

Speaking to Talinvor, you say, "I am unaware of any such mines in the Sentoph."

Emperia ponders.

Speaking to Sorlu, Grutak says, "Sometimes I wonder if I've been hit on the head too much."

Lithyia begins chuckling at Grutak!

Speaking to Grutak, Sorlu says, "I am sure you have several more in you."

Sorlu nods sagely at Grutak.

Elliathe begins chuckling at Grutak!

Speaking politely to Talinvor, you ask, "Did you have another part?"

Lithyia giggles at Sorlu.

Speaking in Dhe'narsi, Meliyara says something you don't understand.

Lithyia giggles to herself.

Speaking to you, Talinvor says, "The Hendorian soldiers are not far from where we claim our northern home. Thus why I am curious about what appears to be mining expansions."

Meliyara smirks as a haughty expression flits across her face.

Sorlu smiles at Lithyia.

Bakarus nods understandingly at Talinvor.

Speaking to you, Geijon says, "You have researched this well. I applaud you."

Sorlu glances at Talinvor.

You smile at Geijon.

Balantine says, "Gold nuggets can be found in Cavernhold."

Speaking to Geijon, you say, "You are very kind. It is a topic that is important to me."

Grutak ponders.

Balantine smiles at Grutak.

You nod sympathetically at Talinvor.

Talinvor shrugs.

Speaking to Talinvor, you say, "Yes, I understand that concern."

Speaking to Sorlu, Grutak asks, "Dhe'nari homeland in Senotoph?"

Lylia nods in agreement at Geijon.

Speaking to Talinvor, you say, "The baystone exploration is north of the river, far from the Obsidian Tower."

Lithyia turns an inquisitive ear toward you.

Talinvor nods appreciatively to you.

You turn to face Perigourd.

Speaking to you, Talinvor adds, "Ah, good. And should stay there."

Talinvor grins at you.

You grin at Talinvor.

Kayse gazes in amusement at Talinvor.

Speaking to you, Perigourd says, "Talinvor's question was close to my own, but I did have another that I was curious about."

Lithyia raises an eyebrow in Perigourd's direction.

Meliyara casually glances at Grutak.

Speaking in Dark Elven, Talinvor asks something you don't understand.

Speaking politely to Perigourd, you say, "Please."

Sorlu appears to be trying hard not to grin.

Landrai grins at Talinvor.

Speaking to Grutak, Sorlu says, "It has to be somewhere, I suppose."

Grutak grins at Meliyara.

Speaking in Dark Elven, Meliyara says something you don't understand.

Grutak winks at Meliyara.

Speaking to you, Perigourd asks, "I was curious if you could elaborate on the specific difference in mining techniques between the local minors, and the Hendoran's improvements, and perhaps how the dwarves have taken it further? what means they used to stabilize such mines. What threats they typically face, and how they deal with those threats?"

Talinvor acts puzzled.

You nod understandingly at Perigourd.

Speaking in Dark Elven to Talinvor, Meliyara explains something you don't understand.

You say, "To start with the original mines."

Speaking in Dark Elven, Talinvor asks something you don't understand.

Geijon nods at Perigourd.

Sorlu smiles at Lithyia.

You say, "I fear I can only describe the work as amateur."

Lithyia grins.

Perigourd nods appreciatively at Geijon.

Lithyia leans back.

Balantine mutters kobolds.

You say, "Which we must expect. These first miners were not experts in the trade, but settlers seeking a new life."

Kayse smiles at Guarrin.

Lithyia nods to you.

Bakarus nods to you.

Grutak winks at Meliyara.

You say, "But a mine that is not carefully built to begin with will be much more difficult to expand."

Elliathe nods once.

Speaking in Dark Elven to Talinvor, Meliyara says something you don't understand.

Speaking in Dark Elven to Talinvor, Meliyara says something you don't understand.

Missoni nods slowly.

Meliyara gazes in amusement at Grutak.

You say, "You must build a shaft to explore and begin working the lower levels. You will need to bring timber into those levels and remove spoil."

Lithyia grins at Sorlu.

Lithyia chuckles to herself.

You say, "Each level must support every level above it."

Grutak says, "That reminds me..."

You say, "Even before reaching the yrrilth'sah, if you have not planned carefully, your difficulties will multiply."

Lithyia raises an eyebrow in Grutak's direction.

Grutak says, "At lower levels I understand air can be hard to breathe."

You nod grimly at Grutak.

Speaking bemusedly in Dark Elven to Talinvor, Meliyara asks something you don't understand.

Grutak asks, "How do you deal with that?"

Kayse gives a sidelong glance between Talinvor and Meliyara.

Missoni murmurs, "How do they know where the yrrilth'sah is..."

Missoni furrows her brow.

Talinvor smirks at Meliyara.

Missoni blushes a nice shade of dark red.

You evenly say, "Yes, there is something we called dyre'yllyc."

Lithyia says, "How do you even say yrrillllssth..."

Lithyia mumbles something under her breath.

Kayse glances appraisingly at you.

Lithyia shakes her head.

You say, "It steals the breath. More dangerously, it can explode."

Lylia smiles at Emperia.

Balantine grins at Lithyia.

Lithyia blushes a nice shade of dark red.

Missoni frowns at you.

Grutak nods.

Grutak says, "I have seen the dwarves use it in undermining walls."

You evenly say, "In the mines I worked in, we would watch each other."

Missoni nods slowly at Perigourd.

You evenly say, "When we saw that a brother or sister was becoming sick, or collapsing, we would attempt to rescue them."

Sorlu rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Missoni furrows her brow.

Lylia nods slowly to you.

A pained expression crosses Elliathe's face.

You evenly say, "And leave that area."

Elliathe nods to you.

Geijon frowns.

Lithyia nods to you.

Furrowing his brow in thought, Guarrin strokes absently at his greased neatly trimmed, full beard.

Grutak asks, "But how do you pull clean air down to such deepths?"

You evenly say, "I believe that on Elanthia there are spells, or techniques, that are better suited to detecting this danger."

Perigourd looks thoughtfully at you.

Earthdiver nods at Grutak.

Lylia says, "I have heard of similar phenomena, with caged birds used to assess the air instead of people."

Lithyia nods at Lylia.

Lylia notes, "Certainly seems cheaper."

You nod once at Lylia.

Bakarus whispers something to Lylia.

You evenly say, "If you count the cost."

Grutak says, "At sea, we often used wizards to aid in propelling ships through the water with the spell call wind."

You nod understandingly at Grutak.

Grutak asks, "Do you use something similar or do you use mechanical measures?"

Lylia murmurs, "Indeed."

Kayse glances at Grutak.

Speaking amusedly to Grutak, Kayse says, "You are horrible at raising your hand."

Lithyia begins chuckling at Kayse!

Sorlu appears to be trying hard not to grin.

Emperia begins chuckling at Kayse!

You say, "The dwarves have a mechanical device that draws air, and expels bad air. If you visit the mine, you may see the hole they have dug to the surface, to reach the air they need."

Speaking to Kayse, Grutak says, "Comes from not having a mother to raise me."

Talinvor nods once at Landrai.

Lithyia frowns at Grutak.

Perigourd nods.

You say, "I am sure in the deep dwarf homes they have similar, much greater tools."

You lightly say, "I would not breathe the air that emerges from the hole near the mine."

You evenly say, "In the mines I worked in there were similar devices."

Sorlu knowingly says, "A Mother is an important thing."

Sorlu nods at Grutak.

Lithyia nods at Sorlu.

You evenly say, "I cannot say how they worked. None of us were entrusted with them."

Perigourd nods appreciatively to you.

Arenglae gives a sidelong glance at Sorlu.

Speaking to Sorlu, Grutak says, "I wouldn't know. She and Father were killed by Vaalorians."

Grutak looks thoughtfully at you.

Lithyia frowns at Grutak.

Sorlu smiles at Elliathe.

Kiyna gives a sidelong glance at Sorlu.

Sorlu leans leisurely on his Nalfein-styled cane, a thoughtful expression upon his face.

Sorlu nods slowly at Grutak.

Lithyia nods at Grutak.

Lithyia smiles at Grutak.

Grutak raises his hand.

Geijon chuckles.

Meril raises her hand.

You turn to face Meril.

You smile at Meril.

Sorlu smiles quietly to himself.

Speaking politely to Meril, you say, "You had a question, I believe."

Meril nods to you.

Yukito smiles at Geijon.

Meril says, "Earlier, you had mentioned that the first mines in the lands around Darkstone Bay were struck by the founding settlers coming here, but..."

You nod in agreement at Meril.

You nod grimly at Perigourd.

Meril says, "There are older mines here, made by the gnolls long before humans and dwarves reached this place."

Grutak grins at Sorlu.

Geijon agrees with Meril.

Sorlu smiles.

You nod slowly at Meril.

Missoni looks thoughtfully at Meril.

Meril asks, "Most of the gnolls are gone now, though some remain. Has the town ever made any pact with them to share their mining knowledge?"

You regretfully say, "I must confess that I do not know of the gnoll mines."

Lithyia says, "We must find a gnoll...and ask them... but I volunteer someone else to do that."

Meril nods thoughtfully.

Lithyia nods.

Lithyia leans back.

You say, "I fear, from that, that the answer may be no. If the Landing settlers drew on the wisdom of the gnolls, they did not place it in their histories."

You say, "But perhaps that is a fault in the histories."

You grin wryly.

Elliathe ponders.

Balantine says, "They are mostly remnants of caves now, some down hobland way."

You nod understandingly at Balantine.

Balantine raises his hand.

Grutak raises his hand.

Speaking to Missoni, you say, "You mentioned finding the yrrilth'sah."

Missoni nods to you.

Speaking teasingly to Grutak, Meliyara says, "He can be taught."

Kayse nods approvingly at Grutak.

Grutak says, "Not really."

Meliyara laughs softly, trying to hide her amusement.

Grutak grins at Meliyara.

Lithyia nods at Traiva.

Speaking lightly to Missoni, you say, "I fear that answer is not difficult. When the mine begins to fill with water, it is time to begin to pump."

Speaking to Meliyara, Grutak says, "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then."

Lithyia nods to you.

Missoni flashes a quick grin.

Kelfyr stands up.

Lithyia begins chuckling at Grutak!

You regretfully say, "The level of the yrrilth'sah varies. I do not know of an easy way to detect it."

Elliathe begins chuckling at Grutak!

Meliyara nods sagely at Grutak.

Speaking to you, Missoni says, "Well, that sounds a fair bit terrifying."

Kayse nods understandingly to you.

You say, "As the problem is detecting water, perhaps a talented wizard could identify it."

You grin at Missoni.

Speaking to Missoni, you say, "Ah, the water comes slowly at first."

You say, "It is more of a seeping than a deluge."

Missoni nods slowly.

You say, "But as it does not stop, the work cannot continue."

Speaking to you, Missoni says, "That is more heartening."

Missoni nods understandingly.

You nod in agreement at Missoni.

You glance between Balantine and Grutak.

Speaking politely to Balantine, you ask, "Did you have a question?"

Grutak chuckles.

Balantine nods to you.

Speaking politely to Grutak, you say, "Then I will turn to you."

Speaking to Sorlu, Grutak says, "Passed over twice."

Lithyia chuckles to herself.

Sorlu grins at Grutak.

Speaking to Kayse, Grutak says, "That's what I get for raising my hand."

Grutak winks at Kayse.

You grin wryly at Grutak.

Speaking to Grutak, Kayse says, "You were after Balantine. Tikba circled back to answer another question."

Missoni slowly empties her lungs.

Balantine asks, "Iron currently is mainly used as a practice material for weapon smiths...and I see a need for smelting growing as it becomes more abundant here. Any chance the better qualtity metal will be able to be converted into steel at some point?"

You nod in agreement at Balantine.

Speaking to Balantine, you say, "Smelting steel requires a good supply of coal."

Balantine adopts an agreeable expression.

You say, "The Landing does produce it, but our exports of it are limited."

Bakarus ponders.

Furrowing his brow in thought, Guarrin strokes absently at his greased neatly trimmed, full beard.

You say, "It is smelted here, for use in our shops."

You say, "But the Imperial smiths prefer to import or produce coal and smelt steel themselves."

You turn to face Grutak.

Speaking lightly to Grutak, you say, "I am sorry to keep you waiting, sir."

Grutak winks at you.

Grutak says, "Circling back to air quality for a moment."

You nod understandingly at Grutak.

Lithyia smiles.

Grutak says, "At deeper depths the air also overheats. Wether from location or body heat."

You nod in agreement at Grutak.

Grutak says, "I know in some dwarven mines they have people that dig shafts so cooler air can sink in."

Bakarus glances at Arenglae.

Arenglae nods faintly at Bakarus.

Grutak asks, "Is this partially how they deal with it at the mine?"

Grutak cocks his head at you.

Geijon raises his hand.

You nod in agreement at Grutak.

Guarrin nods approvingly at Kayse.

Grutak smiles slightly

Grutak says, "Thank you."

You say, "That is my understanding. The air that comes from the shaft is quite warm, as well as noxious."

You smile at Grutak.

Talinvor nods once at Landrai.

You turn to face Geijon.

Lylia flashes a quick grin at Kiyna.

Speaking politely to Geijon, you say, "Sir Geijon."

Geijon nods to you.

Lylia nods slowly.

Sorlu flashes a quick grin.

Grutak stands up.

Speaking to you, Grutak says, "Thank you for the lecture, most informative."

You smile at Grutak.

Grutak glances at Lylia.

Lylia raises an eyebrow.

Lylia smiles thinly.

Speaking to Grutak, you say, "I am glad to have someone as knowledgeable about mining as I."

Geijon says, "This might be indirect. I've found time at th' iron smelter, its a right of passage within th' Order of Voln, but my experience and memory goes to mind collapses, th' dangers and death that involves those who mine, dig too deep or only have one exit."

High Lord Grutak just went through a heavy blue brocade curtain.

Sorlu glances appraisingly at Lylia.

You nod at Geijon.

Geijon says, "Just a word of praise for those who go in and maybe don't come out. It's similar to those who risk their lives to defend others."

Geijon nods to you.

You nod grimly at Geijon.

You slowly agree, "Yes. It is very dangerous work."

A pained expression crosses Elliathe's face.

Elliathe nods to you.

Lithyia nods at Traiva.

Perigourd nods in agreement.

You evenly say, "My interest originally in the topic came from some comments made about whether the miners were working hard enough."

Kiyna grins at Lylia.

Sorlu chuckles to himself.

Kayse smiles at Bakarus.

Lylia winks at Kiyna.

You evenly say, "It is not safe to work a mine too hard. Miners who are tired, or rushed, make mistakes. And die."

Lithyia nods to you.

You say, "I wished to make sure for myself."

Missoni nods gratefully to you.

Kayse looks thoughtfully at you.

You say, "I am glad to report that the miners are working to their own time, at their own will."

Lithyia nods.

You nod firmly.

Kayse simply says, "Amos treats all that work for him with respect."

Lithyia smiles at Kayse.

Sorlu smiles at Kayse.

You nod appreciatively at Kayse.

You grin wryly.

Vaemyr nods at Kayse.

You ask, "Are there any more questions tonight?"

You say, "I am glad to have been able to speak on a topic important to me and interesting to so many."

Lithyia smiles at you.

Balantine removes a milk chocolate rosebud treat from in his sack.

Lylia says, "No more questions, just my sincere thanks for a fascinating discussion."

You warmly say, "Thank you all very much for coming. I appreciate your presence very much."
