The rats are capable of being altered into other types of rodents by specialized merchants.
Alas, skunks aren't rodents. Neither are rabbits, bats, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, moles, weasles, sloths, and raccoons.
The general rules for alteration will be that the animal in question has to be a rodent, have incisors, and be small enough to fit in a belt-worn container and sit on your shoulder. It also cannot be an animal named for an Earth-based geographical location. For example, while a hamster could work, a Guinea pig would not be allowed since it references an Earth location in its name.
