Judge Renpaw hosted the Wehnimer's Landing 5118 Mayoral candidates Lylia and Leafiara in a lively debate, in which questions were asked to both candidates from gathered observers.

Introduction

Renpaw arrives.

Leafiara gives Renpaw a strong, encouraging smile.

Renpaw exclaims, "Finally!"

Speaking formally to Renpaw, Leafiara says, "Judge Renpaw... good eve."

Lylia places a hand over her heart.

Lylia bows to Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "I apologize for the delay."

Speaking to Renpaw, Lylia says, "Judge Renpaw, good to see you."

Lylia says, "We understand well how busy you must be."

Leafiara gently says, "Think nothing of it. Our courts are always busy."

Leafiara nods in agreement at Lylia.

Renpaw says, "I just got back from a lovely trip..."

Lylia smiles at Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "At a Elanthian Judge's Conference..."

Lylia says, "And then came back to be plunged into a brutal debate."

Renpaw says, "and one of my children is ill...yes I still have those...but I am here."

Renpaw twists his head slightly, cracking his neck. He looks relieved.

Leafiara nods sympathetically at Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "So let me go up and address the crowd."

Renpaw says, "then we will begin."

Leafiara amicably says, "Of course. Our citizens come first."

Lylia nods at Renpaw.

Lylia says, "By all means."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Wintersylph yell, "::renpaw Bout time!"

Leafiara chuckles.

Leafiara diplomatically admits, "I guess not -everyone- is so understanding."

Lylia examines her fingernails.

Lylia chuckles.

Lylia smiles and waves to the balcony.

As Cruxophim rubs his obsidian ring, a ball of charcoal black fire builds in his right hand.

Cruxophim offers Lylia a ball of black fire.

Cruxophim flashes a quick grin.

Renpaw glances at Cruxophim.

Cruxophim warmly wishes, "Good luck."

Lylia accepts Cruxophim's black fire.

Lylia bows to Cruxophim.

Leafiara grins at Cruxophim.

Lylia chuckles.

Stretching out into a tear shape, Lylia's inky black fire wavers slightly.

Renpaw says, "Black fire. That was my stage name for a few years."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Kipara yell, "How do you feel about Crux's plan to repair the bone pillars?!"

Leafiara grins at Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "Now then."

Lylia begins chuckling at Renpaw!

Leafiara grins at Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "I told the crowd, since I've made you all wait long, I will not ask questions."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "He's pretty spry for his age!!"

Renpaw says, "Unless perhaps at the end."

Leafiara says, "Very generous."

Leafiara grins at Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "If I feel there is still more to cover."

Leafiara nods understandingly at Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "But for now we'll begin with the crowd."

Lylia says, "I hope we have time for some of your questions as well."

Lylia says, "Of course."

Questions for the Candidates

Stonmel to Renpaw: Neglecting Reports of Treason

Renpaw yells, "Stonmel!"

Stonmel glances at Renpaw.

Leafiara nods to Stonmel in greeting.

Lylia smiles at Stonmel.

Stonmel says, "I do have a question, an important question..."

Renpaw says, "All questions are important."

Renpaw nods at Lylia.

Renpaw nods at Leafiara.

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

Speaking to Renpaw, Stonmel asks, "Were you threatened, paid, incompetient, lazy, or something else, to have neglected the report of treason filed against Leafiara? That report was filed well over a month ago, and every time I ask about it, I get told you are very busy, only for you to now mention a trip. What is the real reason you've neglected this duty?"

Stonmel stares at Renpaw.

Lylia folds her hands.

Leafiara lightly says, "If anyone had come down here except you, I'd be more surprised that the first question was for the judge and neither candidate."

Leafiara grins at Stonmel.

Stonmel turns away from Leafiara, ignoring her.

A nearby goodwife screams, "Contempt!"

Renpaw says, "I will not be addressed in such a manner."

Lylia glances between Stonmel and Renpaw.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Pukk yell, "Throw him in jail!"

Renpaw nods at Stonmel.

Lylia calmly says, "We do not jail citizens for speech."

Stonmel asks, "So you deflect rather than answer?"

Suddenly, a clerk enters the area and motions to Stonmel. "I've come to tell you you've been granted a universal pardon, for some reason beyond my understanding. The night watchman says to tell you that you'll be watched," he says. The official then quickly trots away.

Stonmel raises an eyebrow.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Aerowan yell, "Staircase run Stonmel!"

Renpaw says, "I am not at libery to discuss any details of investigations with you at this time."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Chamorr yell, "'tar an feather both of dem!"

Stonmel says, "Thats the fastest I've heard of him moving around here in months."

Renpaw says, "Please return to the balcony."

Lylia notes, "Neither does the judiciary answer directly to the citizenry...especially not during an active investigation."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Evia yell, "You take the time away from the candidates and the publics questions with your peeve!"

Stonmel glances at Renpaw.

Stonmel asks, "Investigation?"

Leafiara bemusedly says, "Ah, and there's our favorite Bear's famous approach too."

Stonmel says, "I've left word to give a statement, as a witness to the charges."

Stonmel says, "And have not been contacted regarding this "investigation" you speak of."

Stonmel says, "We have someone running for mayor accused of treason."

Renpaw says, "All in due time. Reports get filed and reviewed, investigations get carried out."

Speaking to Stonmel, Leafiara assures, "All proper charges and paperwork were filed by the Mayor, as you've admitted several times before."

Leafiara nods in agreement at Renpaw.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Chamorr yell, "'i wanna hear the canidates!"

Stonmel snorts!

Renpaw says, "You are welcome to submit a complaint to my office, during Moot Hall hours of operations."

Renpaw says, "This is neither the time nor the place."

Stonmel mutters under his breath.

Renpaw says, "If you continue to muddy this debate, I shall have you locked up for contempt."

Renpaw says, "No investigation needed."

Stonmel asks, "Oh, that'll be swift justice finally eh?"

Renpaw asks, "Want to see?"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Chamorr yell, "'lock him up!"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Pukk yell, "Do it! Lock him up!"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Chamorr yell, "'lock him up!"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Aerowan yell, "Stonmel I appreciate you tring to look out, but don't keep going!"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Lornieh yell, "Lock him up! Contempt!"

Lylia closes her eyes for a moment.

Lylia touches Stonmel.

Leafiara lets out a long, contemplative breath.

Stonmel stares at Renpaw.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Kipa yell, "Lock him up!"

Stonmel asks, "Someone comes to speak his mind, and you toss him in jail eh?"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Beldannon yell, "Give him to goblyn!"

Stonmel says, "Some law, some justice."

Leafiara simply says, "It is the Judge's call. He -is- the arbiter of the law."

Lylia shakes her head.

A small human child cries out, "Contempt!". His mother then sends him off for the night watchman.

Stonmel stares at Leafiara.

Renpaw says, "Even the innocent youth agree."

Renpaw nods.

Stonmel says, "Traitor."

Leafiara counters, "Savior."

The night watchman, leading a group of deputies, strides swiftly in.

With great ease, the night watchman grabs Stonmel and shackles his wrists.

"I have you now! You best come along quietly, or you'll face the consequences," says the night watchman.

The night watchman then drags him off.

Leafiara nods to a flat etched stone.

Lylia firmly says, "Enough."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Aerowan yell, "We aren't some angry mob. Stonmel, come sit up here!"

Chamorr to Both: Jurisdiction of the Landing

Renpaw yells, "Chamorr!"

Leafiara smiles at Chamorr.

Leafiara nods in greeting.

Renpaw asks, "do you have any questions for the candidates?"

Chamorr heartily says, "I has a question fer both."

Lylia says, "Of course."

Leafiara tilts her head toward Chamorr, examining him intently as the tip of one ear twitches briefly.

Renpaw turns an inquisitive ear toward Chamorr.

Chamorr heartily asks, "As mayor, where do you think the juristiction of the laws of the landing should cover, just the town proper or the surrounding areas such as Northshore?"

Chamorr heartily says, "Thanks."

Lylia nods at Leafiara.

Renpaw says, "Leafiara, then Lylia this round."

Leafiara nods understandingly.

Lylia nods at Renpaw.

Leafiara says, "I do think the laws should extend beyond only the gates. A similar question came up just last night at House Onoir's meet and greet regarding Melgorehen's Reach, which is so important to the Landing that I'd like jurisdiction to extend even that far."

Renpaw says, "I will need more deputies, and less Stonmels."

Leafiara acknowledges, "As I remember, former Mayor Puptilian did put extending our jurisdiction to a vote once and it was rejected, but I think we're due to reconsider. In recent times we've seen many attacks in the surrounding areas from people such as Carenos and Cyph that would have been easier to untangle with more legal claims over our surrounding forests and cliffs."

Leafiara clarifies, "The fallout of which would have been easier to untangle, that is."

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

Lylia asks, "It has always troubled me that our town's jurisdiction stops at its walls. Are our tillers of the soil not citizens as well? Our loggers, our fishers? Are they to be preyed upon as soon as they leave our gates?"

Chamorr nods at Leafiara.

Lylia raises an eyebrow.

Lylia says, "I would like to see a gradual but sure expansion of our jurisdiction, for the sake of all our citizens -- and yes, for our visitors as well, for we plan to see many more of them as we rise to greater prominence."

Leafiara nods approvingly.

Lylia says, "It could, of course, make matters challenging with outposts, but embassies are another matter."

Lylia smiles.

Lylia says, "As we grow, we can see about adopting a more..."

(Lylia seems to be searching for just the right word.)

Chamorr heartily says, "Embassies, i like that."

Lylia says, "...sophisticated approach."

Lylia nods at Chamorr.

Chamorr heartily says, "Thank you both."

Leafiara curtsies to Chamorr.

Lylia inclines her head.

Lylia warmly says, "Of course."

Speaking heartily to Renpaw, Chamorr says, "Fix yer time keeper."

Chamorr heartily says, "Thanks again."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Evia yell, "Lylia is trying to hypnotize us with her ball of fire!"

Renpaw bows.

Katriah to Both: Reducing Elvish Influence in the Landing

Renpaw yells, "Katriah!"

Katriah bows.

Renpaw nods at Katriah.

Leafiara curtsies to Katriah.

Katriah says, "My question is directed to both candidates."

Lylia remarks, "I am trying to hypnotize you with my eloquence, my dear. The fire is just an amusement."

Renpaw nods.

Lylia bows to Katriah.

Katriah asks, "What will either of you do to reduce the pernicious influence of elves on the Landing?"

Katriah asks, "You remember Gratkor's Cart?"

Lylia narrows her eyes.

Leafiara cocks her head.

Renpaw gazes in wonder at his surroundings.

Katriah says, "It's gone now. Nobody can make an honest living outside the north gate. Undoubtedly murdered by elves."

Katriah says, "I will listen to your responses."

Renpaw says, "Lylia, you first, then Leafiara."

Lylia coolly says, "I do not believe Elves to be a particularly 'pernicious influence.' This is not Chaston Griffin's Talador. All to the good, because we see what became of it under its purely human leader."

Lylia asks, "Which elves were these you say you saw? Nalfein? Loenthran?"

Lylia raises an eyebrow.

Lylia sardonically asks, "Ashrim?"

Leafiara gazes in wonder at her surroundings.

Katriah says, "How should I know? They lurk in the trees."

Katriah says, "Pointed ears. I care not for Elven culture."

Lylia says, "If you have a complaint about particular individuals, then you may follow legal channels. Otherwise, such statements are blind prejudice."

Lylia waves her hand in a dismissive gesture.

Lylia says, "Mm, my condolences, then."

Lylia smiles thinly.

Katriah asks, "And? Leafiara?"

Leafiara nods at Katriah.

Leafiara simply notes, "At least Stonmel filed charges about what he claimed, and for that matter says he's an eyewitness."

Speaking to Katriah, Leafiara says, "While any theory or explanation is worth hearing out, I don't see any reason to believe a conspiracy about elves destroying Gratkor's cart, much less any other business outside the gates."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Goldstr yell, "One a me wives was a elf! Wha wrong wid elves?"

Leafiara says, "As for pernicious influences of the elves..."

Lylia turns her head toward Katriah to favor her with a silent, withering gaze.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "Elves should be more pernicious, methinks!"

Katriah says, "I thank you both for hearing me out."

Leafiara frankly says, "The main elven influence that I wouldn't welcome inside our gates is the racial intolerance often seen in Ta'Vaalor."

Katriah says, "I see that neither of you understand the elven menace."

Leafiara says, "Any of elven heritage who are more understanding and abide by our accepting laws are always welcome in our gates."

Lylia coldly says, "I see you do not understand menace at all."

Katriah says, "Your pointed ears betray you."

Katriah says, "I shall take my leave."

Renpaw says, "Thank you for your time."

Renpaw nods at Katriah.

Katriah bows.

Lylia says, "Do that."

Speaking simply to Katriah, Leafiara says, "I can't change your mind, but you will not change mine on this."

Leafiara curtsies.

Kipara to Both: Cruxophim's Plan to Repair the Bone Pillars

Renpaw yells, "Kipara!"

Lylia closes her eyes for a moment.

Renpaw says, "She was a menace to her mother's birth canal."

Lylia looks like she was about to say something to Renpaw, but she hesitates, obviously having changed her mind.

Leafiara nods to Kipara in greeting.

Lylia smiles quietly to herself.

Renpaw nods at Kipara.

Kipara says, "Sorry for calling out of line earlier, let me repeat."

Lylia smiles at Kipara.

Lylia grins at Renpaw.

Renpaw grins.

Leafiara tilts her head toward Kipara, examining her intently as the tip of one ear twitches briefly.

Kipara says, "For both of you, what are your feelings about current mayor, Cruxophim's plan to repair the bone pillars for our protection."

Renpaw says, "Leafiara, then Lylia."

Renpaw nods.

Leafiara replies, "A very thoughtful use of some untapped resources surrounding us. I'm looking forward to helping with the plan very soon and seeing what comes of it."

Leafiara acknowledges, "I do realize that some are more skeptical, given the history of the pillars, but last year we saw Dennet Kestrel repurpose golems for his own ends and I think he accomplished what he wanted with them."

Leafiara frankly adds, "By which, yes, I do mean that the incident with golems firing on our town was not as unintended as he made it seem."

Leafiara says, "But that was Dennet Kestrel, and this is Mayor Cruxophim. I trust he has our best interests at heart."

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "Good answer!"

Kipara bows to Leafiara.

Leafiara curtsies to Kipara.

Lylia smiles at Kipara.

Kipara smiles at Lylia.

Lylia replies, "I favor it without reservation."

Lylia asks, "The search for knowledge is not a placid or passive endeavor. It requires effort, even pain at times. People see what Grishom Stone wrought, and they are understandably wary, but why should we not take the tools left to us out of some...some superstitious dread?"

Lylia shrugs.

Lylia says, "I can try to allay those fears, but only knowledge is a sure cure."

Lylia says, "We know only by further study."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "Great answer!"

Lylia inclines her head.

(Leafiara grins up toward the balcony.)

Kipara says, "Thank you both."

Lylia says, "Thank you for asking."

Kipara bows respectfully before Lylia, her eyes fixed firmly on the ground.

Leafiara agrees, "A fine question."

Lylia folds her hands.

Renpaw bows.

Pukk to Both: Keeping the Town Safe from Imperial Interference

Renpaw yells, "PUKK!"

Leafiara nods to Pukk in greeting.

Leafiara grins.

Pukk quietly says, "Good evening to you both."

Pukk quietly says, "I have a question for both candidates."

Leafiara warmly says, "Good evening."

Leafiara tilts her head toward Pukk, examining him intently as the tip of one ear twitches briefly.

Lylia nods at Pukk.

Pukk interestedly asks, "Seeing what has happened to our town regarding the Imps interference, what are you thoughts on keeping our town safe from their machinations?"

Lylia asks, "Do you mean imps as in residents of Grik'tyr, or do you mean Imperial citizens?"

Leafiara grins at Lylia.

Pukk quietly says, "Imps are Imps. Imperial blah blah."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Deckits yell, "Here here."

Lylia says, "Glad you clarified. Imps are easy to control, for a sorcerer of any skill. Imperial visitors, however, are a far more mixed bag."

Pukk raises an eyebrow.

Lylia asks, "As I have said before, the answer here is not to arm ourselves and bristle with arrows. Why should we need to?"

(Lylia spreads her hands in an eloquent shrug.)

Pukk nods slowly.

Pukk shifts his weight.

Lylia says, "Soft power. When they need us, they do not seek to own us."

(Lylia holds up a finger.)

Lylia exclaims, "But!"

Lylia says, "Only if we are needed by many. Rather like an auction."

Lylia smiles quietly to herself.

Speaking honestly to Lylia, Pukk says, "Didn't understand a thing you said."

Pukk glances at Leafiara.

Lylia says, "Bidding is highest when there are many who are interested. So, to keep the town safe from any future depredations from Imperial influences such as the recent Taladoran wars, we must --"

Lylia clears her throat.

Pukk turns an inquisitive ear toward Lylia.

Lylia simply says, "We must make acquaintances of all and friends of a few."

Pukk nods slowly.

Lylia says, "If that is a more straightforward way to put it."

Lylia flashes a quick grin.

Pukk turns to face Leafiara.

Pukk raises an eyebrow.

Leafiara smiles at Pukk.

Leafiara says, "First let me say that the answer goes in line with some of the things we've already discussed tonight."

Leafiara acknowledges, "Not all Imperials are our enemies, but it's true we've had many plots against us before and need to be prepared."

Pukk nods slowly.

Lylia thoughtfully taps a finger against her lips.

Leafiara continues, "When they outright attack us, that's where Mayor Cruxophim's plan to improve our defenses with warding comes in. And I'd like to remind that while we can -begin- work on his plan soon, he expects it to possibly take even years to complete--which I do want to see through."

Pukk nods slowly.

Leafiara adds, "We also still have to rebuild the defense towers Octaven destroyed."

Leafiara looks thoughtfully at Pukk.

Pukk nods.

Lylia whispers something to Renpaw.

Pukk quietly says, "Thank you for answering my questions."

Pukk quietly says, "Both of you."

Pukk glances between Leafiara and Lylia.

Leafiara says, "As for the less direct attacks, like challenges to our authority, independence, or jurisdiction..."

Lylia bows to Pukk.

Pukk bows.

Renpaw nods at Lylia.

Renpaw asks, "Yoy had a rebuttal?"

Leafiara simply concludes, "That was where what I said earlier comes in, about claiming more territory around us as the Landing's own so that the Empire knows where we stand and what we will defend."

Leafiara nods.

Renpaw peers quizzically at Lylia.

Renpaw says, "You...."

Renpaw coughs.

Lylia says, "Just a brief one, if I may."

Lylia smiles.

Renpaw nods.

Leafiara nods understandingly at Lylia.

Lylia counters, "You spoke of rebuilding the defenses, Leafiara, but how do you feel about the statement that 'the definition of insanity is repeating the same action and expecting different results'? What manner of defenses do you propose to ward off a potent mage such as Octaven?"

Lylia asks, "Aside from hand-waving and proclaiming 'magic,' that is?"

Deep in thought, Lylia laces her fingers before her.

Leafiara simply says, "It's true the defense towers would do no good against her, but Octaven isn't the only enemy we might face. We have to be prepared for many situations."

Leafiara adds, "And in any case, she's at least outwardly claimed a truce with us for now. Whether anyone believes in the sincerity of that is another thing."

Lylia replies, "She was one example, yes. Which is why I said 'such as Ocvtaven,' and not simply 'Octaven.'."

Lylia clears her throat.

Lylia says, "Octaven, that is."

Lylia nods graciously at Leafiara.

Lylia says, "Thank you."

Renpaw nods.

Lylia smiles at Leafiara.

Riend to Both: Each Candidate's Biggest Weakness

Renpaw yells, "RIEND!"

Leafiara curiously asks, "Tell me, though--do you think that the plan with the pillars won't defend those towers if they're rebuilt?"

Lylia says, "I, too, would rather remain on her good side."

Riend smiles.

Lylia says, "If I thought it would not work, I would not favor it."

Lylia turns around.

Lylia smiles at Riend.

Riend politely says, "Candidates, your honor."

Leafiara simply says, "Then there is another answer."

Leafiara grins.

Riend inclines her head.

Leafiara nods to Riend in greeting.

Renpaw grins.

Riend slowly begins, "You will have to forgive me, as I have been absent long enough to no longer be familiar with both of your actions in these recent rough times or all of your opinions."

Leafiara nods understandingly at Riend.

Riend asks, "So I would ask you both: What do you feel is your opponent's biggest weakness and why should we, the voters, be concerned in how it will pertain to us should they be elected?"

Riend folds her hands.

Lylia gazes in amusement at Riend.

Renpaw says, "Ever the one to embrace controversy."

Renpaw nods at Riend.

Leafiara grins.

Renpaw says, "Leafiara, then Lylia."

Renpaw nods.

Lylia nods.

Riend raises her eyebrows and gazes quite intently at Renpaw, clearly withholding comment.

Renpaw shrugs at Riend.

Renpaw says, "I'm not judging."

Renpaw says, "Oh wait, yes I do."

Renpaw chuckles.

Leafiara lightly says, "Well, first I'd be remiss not to note that Lady Lylia -is- a highly qualified candidate."

Lylia smiles at Leafiara.

Leafiara says, "Still, we all must have weaknesses, so if I had to name one..."

Speaking evenly to Renpaw, Riend says, "And yet I am not the one standing accused this evening."

Riend appears to be struggling to keep a straight face as she glances at Renpaw.

Lylia nods at Leafiara.

Renpaw grins at Riend.

Leafiara frankly says, "I can't fully embrace her ideas about soft power. They sound good in theory, but I wouldn't run on a platform of changing perceptions of the Landing in the world around us--perceptions that are distant and often not very favorable."

Leafiara carefully says, "No matter how we improve our trade, I think that the diversity we embrace here will always be... challenging, shall we say, to how other nations or baronies view us."

Riend cocks her head at Leafiara.

Leafiara concludes, "I wouldn't say that her policy is something we should be concerned about, to use your word, but I also don't think it's as feasible as she hopes."

Leafiara admits, "Though if she wins, I very much hope she proves me wrong on that."

Leafiara nods at Riend.

Riend smiles at Leafiara.

Riend inclines her head.

Lylia warmly says, "I shall endeavor to...reflect on that, and I thank you for your candor."

Lylia nods at Leafiara.

Leafiara nods at Lylia.

Lylia says, "And as for my part..."

Lylia smiles at Riend.

Lylia says, "It is a great credit to my opponent that she has accomplished so much in two and a half decades, but experience matters."

Lylia glances at Leafiara.

Lylia says, "When she was learning to walk, I was striding across the battlefield to engage with the Claw of Andelas."

Lylia says, "When she was learning to talk, I was thanking Lorminstra for her intercession that allowed me to keep my soul intact from the depredations of the Vvrael."

Lylia places a hand over her heart.

Lylia notes, "I have lived some seventeen times her span, and I believe the experience of generations can guide our town toward a brighter future."

Lylia says, "To hold back the tides of superstition and ignorance requires a commitment to knowledge and open inquiry."

Lylia tilts her head up.

(Lylia sweeps her arms out to her sides, her splayed hands held aloft to illustrate the metaphor in a graceful gesture.)

Lylia says, "A mayor's term is for a year, but my vision for our town is not so limited."

Lylia says, "Not in space, and not in time."

Lylia says, "Her weakness is one she will grow out of."

Riend glances appraisingly at Lylia.

Lylia smiles quietly to herself.

Lylia says, "How fortunate for her, and for all of us."

Lylia inclines her head.

Riend smiles.

Riend thoughtfully says, "Thank you ladies for your candor."

Riend inclines her head.

Leafiara nods appreciatively at Riend.

Renpaw bows.

Renpaw says, "Thank you."

Azryen to Both: Changes to Laws in the Landing

Renpaw yells, "Azyren!"

Lylia smiles at Azryen.

Leafiara nods to Azryen in greeting.

Azryen says, "My question is for both candidates."

Azryen says, "Recently the Town Council agreed to the current Mayor's request to strike the ordinance prohibiting the summoning of demons within the town gates. This request came about from direct input from the local citizenry and regular visitors to Wehnimer's Landing and, thus far, has largely been met with positive feedback."

Leafiara nods understandingly at Azryen.

Lylia nods in agreement.

Azryen asks, "What existing ordinances would you support removing or changing should you be elected to the office of Mayor? Alternatively, is there an ordinance that you would support establishing that is not currently in place?"

Deep in thought, Lylia laces her fingers before her.

Leafiara looks thoughtfully at Azryen.

Renpaw says, "Lylia, then Leafiara."

Renpaw nods.

Lylia says, "To borrow a page from my opposition's notes, I would have to say that this is a time to listen to the people -- specifically, to those people who are most affected by such laws."

Lylia says, "Cruxophim listened to me about imps and verloks; I am grateful."

Lylia smiles.

Lylia says, "The recent removals of the bans on blood magic have also gone some way toward bringing us forward, magically speaking."

Lylia says, "I believe there are certain prohibitions against spells in town that could also be lifted, but that would need further review."

Leafiara nods in agreement.

Lylia says, "Listening alone is never enough. We cannot just...do whatever we are told. We must also exercise executive power and reasoning."

Lylia says, "I would trust my advisors to guide me in this."

Speaking to Azryen, Lylia asks, "Do you have a specific request yourself?"

Azryen says, "Not at this time."

Lylia says, "My opponent has said 'no law is perfect,' and she is correct in that. She has, however, failed to mention that it is not the law, but the application of it that is so often lacking. We must also see to it that applications are just, not merely the laws themselves."

Lylia inclines her head.

Leafiara nods understandingly.

Leafiara says, "In the same spirit as allowing the summoning of minor demons, which are fairly well known to be harmless, I'd like to reevaluate which spells are considered worthy of a jail sentence."

Lylia nods in agreement at Leafiara.

Leafiara reasons, "We can web one another in town freely with no repercussions, but we cannot knock a person over with an elemental wave? It hardly seems to make sense."

Leafiara looks thoughtful for a moment, then shrugs.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Berkana yell, "It's not the spell, it's the caster!"

Lylia folds her hands.

Leafiara adds, "Or vaporize a box with lightning--no more dangerous than an inexperienced rogue opening a box in the middle of a square, but one is punished for the spell even if nobody is harmed."

Leafiara concludes, "These are frivolous things I think we need not waste too much of our court's time with. I'd like to see them addressed."

Leafiara nods.

Lylia nods in agreement at Leafiara.

Azryen nods gratefully.

Lylia smiles at Azryen.

Renpaw bows.

Wintersylph to Both: Room for Religious Leadership

Renpaw yells, "Wintersylph!"

Renpaw says, "No, they did not summon animates."

Renpaw snickers.

Renpaw winks.

Wintersylph nods at Renpaw.

Leafiara grins crookedly.

Lylia begins chuckling at Renpaw!

Wintersylph softly says, "Ladies."

Wintersylph nods.

Leafiara gives Wintersylph a strong, encouraging smile.

Wintersylph's eyes twinkle with merriment as she playfully drops into a quick curtsy, letting out a soft giggle as she rises.

Lylia inclines her head.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "Come forth my undead minions!!!"

Leafiara chuckles.

Wintersylph grins.

Lylia gazes in amusement at a narrow stairway.

Wintersylph softly says, "Question for both."

Wintersylph softly says, "First leaf then Lylia."

Lylia nods.

Lylia raises her voice in merry laughter.

Leafiara gazes in amusement at a narrow stairway.

Lylia leans forward.

Wintersylph softly says, "I have listened over the past weeks to both of your answers concerning the Matorship race."

Leafiara nods in agreement at Wintersylph.

Wintersylph softly says, "Oayorship."

Wintersylph coughs.

Wintersylph softly says, "Sorry."

Leafiara amicably agrees, "You -have- been to several events. I appreciate your interest."

Leafiara nods at Wintersylph.

Wintersylph softly says, "Mayorship."

Leafiara tilts her head toward Wintersylph, examining her intently as the tip of one ear twitches briefly.

Wintersylph softly says, "And I must say, I a little taken."

Wintersylph softly says, "Leaf you are a lady of the cloth."

Leafiara cocks her head at Wintersylph.

Wintersylph softly says, "All I have heard thus far from you is Secular answers that are status quo."

Wintersylph softly says, "All about defense."

(Lylia swirls her drink in her glass.)

Wintersylph softly says, "And neighbors relations."

Renpaw says, "There."

Renpaw says, "Is."

Renpaw says, "A question."

Renpaw says, "Somewhere."

Renpaw asks, "Yes?"

Leafiara grins at Renpaw.

Wintersylph softly says, "Yes."

Wintersylph softly says, "We have a lacking in guilds."

Wintersylph softly says, "In temples."

Wintersylph softly says, "And a general infrustructure of the civil nature."

Leafiara nods faintly at Wintersylph.

Wintersylph softly says, "What are your plans if any for that."

Wintersylph softly says, "Kind of work."

Leafiara admits, "First, I'll say I'm surprised that nobody has brought up my religion until you just now."

Wintersylph softly says, "And is there any room for religious leadership in your stead instead of this secular stuff."

Leafiara carefully says, "There is a reason you've heard mostly secular answers from me."

Leafiara frankly admits, "I'd actually agree with most of our secular citizens that I don't know how much the Arkati truly care to intervene in our affairs--or care about us, for that matter."

Wintersylph frowns.

Leafiara thoughtfully continues, "Not many people know this about me, but..."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "Separation of Church and Snakes!"

Wintersylph yells, "And the snakes have it!"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Aerowan yell, "Here here!"

Leafiara explains, "I am a follower of Tilamaire because, at least according to the traditional stories, he himself was once a mortal and only became immortal after seeking out Cholen and asking why he's abandoned his duties."

Leafiara says, "I do believe -he- understands our plight and will listen to us--it's many other Arkati who I'm less certain about."

Leafiara says, "Now, as for whether there's a place in the Landing for more religious leadership..."

Wintersylph softly says, "Emmisary, advisior."

Leafiara concludes, "I leave that to our people. We accept all walks. I won't specifically favor one faith over another, but I'll give due publicity to any events our faithful citizens organize."

Leafiara says, "I'd encourage you to move forward yourself on that front. I don't believe it's the place of the Mayor of the Landing."

Leafiara nods at Wintersylph.

Lylia smiles at Wintersylph.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Berkana yell, "Things are degrading up here..."

Renpaw says, "Same question>"

Renpaw peers quizzically at Wintersylph.

Renpaw asks, "For Lylia?"

Wintersylph softly says, "Yes, as to building civil infrastructure including temples etc."

Wintersylph softly says, "She's notlady of the cloth."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "Please restate the question!"

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Evia yell, "Its just Madmountan mis-skewering people and Goblyn supporting anarcht!"

Lylia simply says, "As I said before, whatever funds we devote to temples, we should match in building libraries."

Lylia adds, "Museums as well, or additions to our current museum."

Lylia admits, "I have no particular affinity for a given faith, although of late I have found the nature of it fascinating..."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Goldstr yell, "Yell Cheers Lylia!"

Lylia says, "But I do place a great deal of stock in education."

Wintersylph nods.

Wintersylph softly says, "Thank you."

Lylia inclines her head.

Leafiara nods encouragingly at Wintersylph.

Lylia says, "And thank you."

Wintersylph nods at Renpaw.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Evia yell, "Great education to be had in the stocks!"

Leafiara raises an eyebrow.

Beldannon: Investigating the Pyramid in Darkstone Bay

Renpaw yells, "Beldannon!"

Beldannon softly says, "I just have one question."

Leafiara smiles at Beldannon.

Beldannon softly says, "In 27 parts."

Beldannon giggles.

Beldannon softly says, "I kid."

Leafiara gazes in wonder at her surroundings.

Lylia gazes in amusement at Beldannon.

Beldannon softly says, "I was going to ask about more gambling but instead with all the talk about magic and octavian and such. I am curious if either of you have given thought to expeditions into the bay to find out the secrets of the pyramid."

Leafiara nods understandingly at Beldannon.

Beldannon softly says, "Seems the magic of the ithzir might be helpful."

Lylia simply says, "Yes. I have given it a great deal of thought."

Lylia smiles at Beldannon.

Lylia says, "I favor such a plan. Golems are particularly useful as they have no need to breathe."

Renpaw says, "We should only consider if ithzir's a reason to go there..."

Renpaw snickers to himself.

Renpaw says, "It...ithzir...damnit."

Beldannon chuckles.

Renpaw goes quiet.

Leafiara grins crookedly at Renpaw.

Lylia says, "Beyond that, I could not say, as it would require more study. I would defer to those with more knowledge of the Ithzir."

Lylia gazes in amusement at Renpaw.

Beldannon softly says, "Well I just want to keep it in peoples minds, I think we could bnefit from it. that's all i have really."

Beldannon grins.

Beldannon bows to Lylia.

Beldannon bows to Leafiara.

Lylia says, "I am glad you asked. Believe me, I have not forgotten the Ithzir, or their pyramids."

Renpaw peers quizzically at Leafiara.

Renpaw says, "He left, but..."

Leafiara says, "I'd have to agree we should pursue expeditions into the Bay. Maybe we could get some advice on diving from the inhabitants of Caligos Isle."

Renpaw nods at Leafiara.

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

Leafiara adds, "I'd hope our expeditions would be more fruitful than the diving there was, though, at least for me."

Leafiara grins.

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Beldannon yell, "Thanks!"

Lylia tilts her head up.

Lylia renders a sharp salute with her Elanthian Comfort.

Renpaw bows.

Lafali to Both: Single Most Conflicting Moment

Renpaw yells, "Lafali!"

Lafali smiles.

Leafiara nods to Lafali in greeting.

Leafiara smiles.

Lafali says, "Good evening again."

Lylia warmly says, "Hello."

Lafali says, "What was your single most conflicting moment in regards to the welfare of the town and how did you resolve it?"."

Renpaw says, "Leafiara, then Lylia."

Lafali turns to face Leafiara.

Leafiara clarifies, "You mean the moment that I felt most conflicted? Or faced the most difficult external conflict?"

Speaking to Leafiara, Lafali says, "That you were conflicted."

Leafiara nods understandingly at Lafali.

Leafiara says, "Just about anything involving the Rooks and their activity has been an ongoing conflict for me."

Leafiara says, "They provided us helpful information on the one hand, and on the other they attack our Hendoran allies or, for some reason I can't understand, attempt to assassinate Rodnay."

Renpaw glances at Leafiara.

Leafiara says, "They -are- our citizens, and unlike some among us including Rone, I have no intent of going to make any attack on their tunnels."

Leafiara acknowledges, "As much as I hate to say it, so far I -haven't- found a resolution. That's why, if I'm elected, I'd like to open up a peaceful dialogue with them."

Leafiara adds, "As many as would like to approach me. In confidentiality."

Lafali nods thoughtfully.

Leafiara concludes, "I think it's better than the extremes of either a full pardon or a direct attack."

Leafiara nods at Lafali.

Speaking to Leafiara, Lafali says, "Thank you."

Leafiara smiles at Lafali.

Lafali turns to face Lylia.

Speaking to Lafali, Lylia explains, "Say I have often made decisions that put me at risk, and I am willing to take that upon myself."

Lylia says, "It is part of what a diplomat does, after all. People think it is an easy role, but they have never faced down the Icewall Bandits, been jabbed in the kidney by the 'King of the Rooks,' or attempted to learn Ithziri on the fly."

Lylia smiles quietly to herself.

Lafali winces.

Lylia says, "But these are easily put in the past. These are not the choices that trouble me."

Lylia says, "I would have to say the greatest conflict I have felt in some time was about the choice to use Aralyte Halanori Faendryl's own soulstone to retrieve the Hendoran outpost from some Ithziri realm."

Lylia sighs.

Lylia says, "It still leaves me sleepless some nights. I have not given up."

Lylia vows, "I never shall."

Leafiara nods sympathetically at Lylia.

Lafali smiles at Lylia.

Lylia says, "So this is one conflict I expect to end."

Lylia says, "But until it does, that is my answer to your thought-provoking question."

Lylia bows to Lafali.

Speaking to Lylia, Lafali says, "I pray that you do M'lady. Thank you."

Lylia nods.

Leafiara folds her hands.

Renpaw bows.

Renpaw says, "Thank you."

Ysharra to Both: The Opening of More Public Institutions

Renpaw yells, "Ysharra!"

Leafiara smiles at Ysharra.

Leafiara nods in greeting.

Ysharra says, "Good evening, ladies, Judge."

Leafiara greets, "Good eve to you as well."

Lylia bows to Ysharra.

Lylia smiles.

Ysharra says, "We've spoken about this in some of the other questions. But I'd like a clear answer from you both, please."

Leafiara nods understandingly.

Ysharra asks, "When in office, what public institution would you attempt to bring or open here in the Landing? Commemorative, religious, educational or creative? Does this reflect a need or a focus to you, and why?"

Lylia nods at Ysharra.

Renpaw says, "Lylia, then Leafiara."

Renpaw nods.

Ysharra curtsies to Renpaw.

Lylia says, "I have made no secret of my devotion to education. It does represent a need to me, because to be entirely blunt, I feel my own formal education is somewhat lacking compared to some."

(Lylia glances up at the balcony.)

Ysharra says, "I know him. That one."

Ysharra glances up.

Leafiara grins.

Lylia says, "Among others, yes."

Lylia chuckles.

Lylia says, "But this is not a self-serving need. This is my opportunity to give to others in the Landing what I am still acquiring for myself -- knowledge."

Lylia says, "Creative pursuits are, of course, important too. I would not neglect the arts. I funded Lord Nehor's play..."

Ysharra nods sympathetically at Lylia.

Leafiara nods approvingly.

Lylia smiles wryly and says, "Which will be coming out any month now, I am certain."

Lylia says, "But my primary focus would be our educational institutions."

Ysharra chuckles to herself.

Leafiara replies, "I'd like to do much more to promote our artisans and creators."

Ysharra smiles at Leafiara.

Leafiara continues, "Last year there was a craft bazaar in which many organizations put their talents to use and sold goods--from weapons to magical items to shoes to food."

Lylia gazes with interest at Leafiara.

Leafiara says, "From what I understand, that bazaar is going to be an annual event, but I'd like to do more in that vein much more often than that."

Leafiara says, "I think it's an important part of embracing our diversity to give all of the cultures and races who call the Landing home a place to promote the goods they hold dear."

Leafiara says, "Everybody putting the best of their cultures forward... that's the kind of future I want to help build."

Leafiara nods at Ysharra.

Ysharra smiles.

Renpaw bows.

Renpaw says, "Thank you."

Ysharra says, "Thank you, ladies. Sirrah, my thanks as well."

Lylia smiles.

Kipara to Both: Allaying Public Fear of Unconventional Magic

Renpaw yells, "Kipara! For the second to last question."

Renpaw says, "The last question will be mine."

Leafiara appreciatively says, "Thank you for the thoughtful question."

Renpaw grins.

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

Lylia grins at Renpaw.

Lylia says, "Excellent."

Lylia waves to Kipara.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Evia yell, "Pew Pew!"

Leafiara nods to Kipara in greeting.

Kipara recites:

"This is, again, for both candidates"

Lylia nods.

Lylia furrows her brow.

Renpaw nods at Kipara.

Leafiara tilts her head toward Kipara, examining her intently as the tip of one ear twitches briefly.

Kipara recites:

"You have both mentioned before your support for unconventional magic, specifically blood magic. How do you think the general public feels about such things? also, I suppose more my point is, how do you plan to abate the fears of the general public?"

Leafiara nods understandingly at Kipara.

Renpaw says, "Leafiara, then Lylia."

Leafiara begins, "First a little clarity, for any in the audience who hadn't attended the discussion she's referencing... I have expressed my support for the practice of blood magic, yes, but I'm not myself a practitioner. In case anyone is wondering."

Leafiara flashes a quick grin.

Leafiara continues, "And my answer to those who might feel squeamish or uneasy about blood magic, as I once did myself, would be to do exactly what I did to allay my own fears: speak with some of our blood mages."

Leafiara says, "Some are very well known, like our Captain Stormyrain and our Mayor Cruxophim, and likely willing to share their thoughts with any who ask."

Leafiara concludes, "I'll have to borrow a page from what my opponent so often says, but I don't think there's anything to fear in this regard except our own ignorance."

Leafiara pragmatically says, "Any magic can be used for good or ill. Blood magic is no different."

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

Renpaw nods.

Leafiara nods at Kipara.

Renpaw turns an inquisitive ear toward Lylia.

Lylia notes, "I do not particularly favor blood magic, actually. I respect its power, but I feel no particular affinity for it beyond its kinship to certain sorcerous magic."

Lylia smiles at Kipara.

Lylia says, "The point is not how I feel about it, though."

Lylia says, "People fear what they do not understand. And such fears leave them open to manipulation."

Lylia furrows her brow.

Lylia says, "Their safety, or perceived safety, from blood magic lies in a greater familiarity with it. Just as people have become familiar with my verlok'asha or verlok'cina, they may become familiar with simple spells involving blood."

Lylia says, "So really, education is once again the answer."

Lylia smiles.

Leafiara nods in agreement.

Renpaw says, "THank you."

Renpaw bows to Kipara.

Leafiara adds, "I've found my discussions with blood mages very enlightening. Much more than I expected."

Leafiara nods.

Kipara bows.

Lylia nods.

Renpaw to Both: Opponent's Greatest Strength

Renpaw says, "I shall ask one final question, then call it a night. I know I've kept you all up far late."

Leafiara grins at Renpaw.

Leafiara simply says, "It's the good work that needs to be done."

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

Lylia says, "I am more of an owl than a wren anyway."

Lylia smiles at Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "We've touched on many issues, and even our weakness."

Renpaw asks, "To end on a respectable note, we'll begin with you Lylia, then Leafiara. What would you describe your opponent's greatest strength that makes them ideal for this position?"

Leafiara nods understandingly.

Lylia smiles.

Lylia says, "What a lovely grace note on which to end the debate."

Leafiara grins.

Lylia says, "Her organizational skill is exceptional. I have stood in awe of her ability to whip together meeting after meeting, coordinate all manner of activities, and still have time for more."

Leafiara nods appreciatively at Lylia.

Lylia adds, "I also admire that she wishes to bring in a large number of our citizenry, no matter whether they are owls or wrens, so to speak. I would need to rely on advisors for that, but she is always available."

Lylia says, "So I would say two strengths. I could not limit myself to one."

Lylia flashes a quick grin.

Leafiara smiles at Lylia.

Lylia says, "I am sure Leafiara will forgive me listing two."

Renpaw grins.

Renpaw nods.

Leafiara says, "Knowledgeable, thoughtful, eloquent--these are words that characterize a good leader, and certainly characterize Lady Lylia."

Lylia inclines her head.

Leafiara says, "Truly, I'd trust her to move us forward and to make many diplomatic allies--she was a perfect selection as diplomatic advisor by Mayor Cruxophim."

Leafiara rubs her chin thoughtfully.

Leafiara frankly says, "I'd go so far as to admit she'd likely be better than me at engaging with those outside our town. She's more well-versed in it and more experienced. I won't deny it."

Leafiara grins at Lylia.

Lylia chuckles.

Leafiara nods at Renpaw.

Renpaw grins.

Conclusion

Renpaw says, "Thank you to you both."

Speaking to Leafiara, Lylia murmurs, "I thank you for the praise, and I hope you know mine was heartfelt."

Speaking warmly to Lylia, Leafiara says, "Mine as well, and thank you also."

Renpaw says, "I appreciate the our candidate's time this evening."

Leafiara curtsies gracefully to Renpaw.

Renpaw says, "And for those in the balcony, my thanks to you as well."

Lylia says, "As we appreciate yours -- and the audience's."

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Evia yell, "My question is, the current Mayor installed..if that is the word, a panel of advisors. Do the candidates plan to continue this practice, and if so, what categories would they find the most useful!"

Renpaw exclaims, "Please all have a safe evening. Voting begins in a few days!"0

Renpaw exclaims, "Goodnight everyone!"

Renpaw bows.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Roelaren yell, "Well done both of ye!"

Renpaw wanders off.

From up on a narrow stairway, you hear Cruxophim yell, "Get up here!"

Leafiara says, "The short answer is yes, Dame Evia--and I fear we don't have time for the long answer tonight."

Leafiara grins.

Lylia raises her voice in merry laughter.
