Insurmountable saddles were first introduced at Rumor Woods in 2026 following the release of Scorpion mounts. While they behave similar to Saddle Me Up saddles, they are more closely related to Cog and Zephyr saddles. The scutix is a Faendryl innovation similar to the gnomish Hailx, at least in regards to it lying flat when not on the mount and 'unboxing' when on the mount. Original crafters of the scutix called them a chitin-craft, though that design style has since fallen out of practice due to life expectancy issues. The design is lightweight. The vurziod, a forgewright saddle, is a Tehir innovation. Comprised of both metal and leather parts, the design features a high back, hide padding, and forward railings. The design is rigid and sturdy.

Both scutix and vurziod can be unlocked from via certificate to expand which fluff verbs they have. They are sold in the Rumor Woods shop Insurmountable.

Scutix

in-hand look Folded into its resting configuration, the scutix lies flat, its overlapping, articulated bloodwood plates pressed to the underside of a ebon spidersilk pad and held in place by rolaren rivets. Its ora hook plates are tucked smoothly against the underside of the pad, while its stirrups are retracted to be flush with the wooden base.

on mount look Each of the bloodwood hook plates is pressed firmly into a corresponding tergite groove of the scorpion's mesosoma, the wood having settled against the exoskeleton. The leading edge sits neatly behind the carapace junction, leaving the median eyes unobstructed. The ebon spidersilk-padded seat has risen into its riding configuration, and two braced stirrups extend downward at a middling length.

A giant sable wastes scorpion wears the lacquered scutix on his mesosoma between the carapace and the first metasomal segment.

--------- ALTERATION INFORMATION ---------
The noun cannot change. So what can you do? Any merchant may alter the article, adjective, and/or long description of the scutix. They can also add a show description that will append to the hard-coded LOOK. Any merchant may toggle the seat padding material and the wooden plate color/type. All alterations must be in keeping with the saddle's wooden style. Alterations must not contradict the saddle's core construction or function.

Note that some aspects of the LOOK are hard-coded (such as the stirrup length setting) and cannot currently be modified by a merchant.

This saddle's style (which is not currently eligible to be changed to another style) is set to scutix (Chitin-craft).
For alteration purposes, keep the following in mind: When not in use, the design is a flat, layered arrangement of articulated wooden plates with padding on the upper surface. When saddled, the hook plates engage the scorpion's tergite grooves, the saddle rises into riding configuration, and the leading edge sits clear of the scorpion's median eyes. Relatively lightweight.

The scutix can have two minor customizations set if not already addressed in the base/long/show. They are:
  - hook plate accents. Currently: ora
  - rivet material. Currently: rolaren
  - the wooden plate primary color/type. Currently: bloodwood
  - the seat padding material. Currently: ebon spidersilk
Also note that the scutix is called a "folded scutix" when not saddled on a mount -- your scutix will automatically reflect this naming depending on whether it is currently saddled or not.

OTS/Verb Set 1
Verb Style First Third
DROP/PUT Coaxing a sable wastes scorpion to hold steady, you lay a folded and lacquered bloodwood scutix across his mesosoma, positioning the leading edge just behind the carapace junction and ensuring his median eyes are left entirely clear. Working methodically from front to back, you press each of the hook plates into the corresponding tergite grooves with a series of quiet snapping sounds. The bloodwood warms perceptibly and conforms to the natural topography of his sable exoskeleton. The ebon spidersilk-padded seat rises into riding configuration, and the stirrups extend downward at a middling length. A last, barely-audible crackle runs through the plates as the saddle goes still. This section has not been added yet; please add to it now!
GET Ensuring that your wastes scorpion appears suitably at ease with his current situation, you press the recessed release node at the rear of the scutix. A muted clicking progresses forward along the scutix's base as each hook plate disengages from its tergite groove in sequence from rear to front. The ebon spidersilk-padded seat folds flat, and the stirrups retract with a soft rasp.

Satisfied that every hook plate has released, you lift and draw the scutix clear of the scorpion's mesosoma and into your hands.

Vurziod

'in hand Crafted with a high back, the copper vurziod bears a series of overlapping ring hook clasps along its underside, each retracted flush against the frame. A rear tension knob anchors the trailing edge, while the leading edge curves forward to a rigid rail. The amdhir blue goathide-padded seat and seatback rise above two rigid stirrups on jointed billets, set to a middling length.

on scorpion Crafted to follow the natural segmentation of a scorpion's mesosoma, the copper vurziod is anchored to the tergite grooves by a series of overlapping ring hook clasps, each seated cleanly into its respective groove and held firm by the rear tension knob. The leading edge sits precisely behind the carapace junction, ensuring the scorpion's median eyes remain unobstructed. The amdhir blue goathide-padded seat and rigid seatback are flanked by a forward rail, and two rigid stirrups on jointed billets extend outward at a middling length.

DROP/PUT Coaxing a giant sable wastes scorpion to hold steady, you center a hammered copper vurziod fitted with amdhir blue goathide upon his mesosoma, carefully aligning its frame just behind the carapace junction so that his median eyes remain fully unobstructed. One by one, you engage each of the copper tergite hook clasps, each giving a satisfying *CLICK!* as it seats firmly into a tergite groove. A final twist of the rear tension knob draws the vurziod snug against his back, and the stirrups unfold from the frame at a middling length. The frame settles with a faint, final metallic resonance. This section has not been added yet; please add to it now!
GET Ensuring that your wastes scorpion appears suitably at ease with his current situation, you reach for the tension knob at the rear of the vurziod. With a practiced reverse-twist, the frame disengages, and the tergite hook clasps spring free of their respective grooves one after another in a brief, ascending metallic tattoo. The stirrups fold back against the frame with a pair of clicks, and you draw the vurziod cleanly away from his mesosoma in a single smooth motion. Lore

The Scutix - A Faendryl Chitin-craft Saddle

The name scutix is deceptively simple, meaning little more than saddle in the Faendryl tongue. The design it describes, however, is anything but.

Originally fashioned from the great chitinous plates of deceased wastes scorpions, the earliest scutix was a triumph of pragmatic elegance. The plates fit the mount's natural contours seamlessly, cradling the rider while protecting their back beneath an articulated shell. To the eye, rider and scorpion seemed almost one creature.

The pheromones embedded in the harvested chitin told a different story. Imperceptible to the riders, the scent spoke plainly to every scorpling within range: here was a host. The resulting swarms were catastrophic for mount and rider alike.

Modern scutix are carved from carefully shaped wood, treated and finished to mirror the living chitin beneath them; glossy where the mount gleams, textured where the natural plates ripple. The best craftsmen spend as much time matching the color and sheen of a specific mount as they do the saddle's construction. When the articulated plates are folded open for mounting, even a trained eye may struggle to find where the scorpion ends and the saddle begins.

Note: scutix is both a singular and plural word.

The Vurziod - A Tehir Forgewright Saddle

In Tehir, vurziod draws from roots that mean stinger, finger, and strength in equal measure, with seat woven somewhere beneath all three. Scholars have settled on "stingseat" as the working translation, though any Tehir present for that decision would likely find it incomplete.

What the name describes is a saddle built not around the rider, but around the mount. Where other cultures design riding equipment to subdue or conceal, the vurziod is fitted with the precision of someone who regards the creature beneath them as a partner rather than a beast of burden. The Tehir do not consider the sandfinger tamed. They consider it convinced. A willing partner.

The saddle follows the natural segmentation of the scorpion's mesosoma, sitting cleanly along the tergite grooves rather than strapping across them. A series of hook clasps, which retract flush when the saddle is unengaged, are set into each groove sequentially. Once positioned, a rear tension knob cinches the whole assembly firmly from behind. The leading edge is placed precisely behind the carapace junction, leaving the scorpion's median eyes unobstructed.

The seat itself is high-backed, padded in local hides, and flanked by a forward rail. Two rigid stirrups extend outward on jointed billets, adjustable to the length of the rider's leg. The rigidity is deliberate. A scorpion's gait is not a horse's gait, and a stirrup that gives with the motion rather than holding against it will teach a rider bad habits quickly.

When the tension knob is seated, and the clasps have found their grooves, the vurziod becomes less a saddle than a connection, the final expression of a bond that began before the first molt was shed. Built for the unforgiving rhythms of the Sea of Fire, it holds the rider not by force but by fit. After all, precision and trust, among the Tehir, amount to the same thing.
