Black ora is an extremely rare metal and has very unique properties. It comes into the game via special merchants (usually at pay events) and is most effective as a weapon-making material, and only weapons made of black ora have its special properties. |

Black ora is the most rare form of ora, and when found in a natural black state the metal's magical properties are a direct opposite of the white variant. Though its basic properties are the same as common ora, it holds a magical curse within it when black. It is usually used by dark sorcerers, clerics, or mages because of its nature. Other than that small bit of information, not much else is known due to the extreme rarity of pure black ora. |

Black ora weapons are permanently cursed, give a bonus to mana regeneration and wisdom. They give a penalty to spirit regeneration. |
|||
There are two varieties of black ora: black ora found in the treasure system and the scripted black ora used in specialty weapons and jewelry. Black ora from the treasure system is found cursed, but once uncursed will remain uncursed. |
|||
The permanent cursing means that upon holding the weapon (retrieving it from a scabbard, another player, etc) the user has just a few seconds to deal with the weapon before the shadows surrounding it wrap around their hand and need to have the curse neutralized before stowing or dropping the weapon. The curse may be neutralized by pouring a dose of a pure potion or other potion (usually from special events) that contain the spell Neutralize Curse (309), or by having the spell Neutralize Curse (309) cast on them in some way. |

Black ora weapons come in two varieties, major and minor. Minor weapons are more readily available and have all the features as described. Major black ora weapons have all the same features but additionally can be attended once per day to teleport the user to a preset location. Major weapons are distributed with a +30 or above bonus, while minor weapons are normally distributed with a +20 or +25 bonus. |

Other than that small bit of information, not much else is known due to the extreme rarity of pure black ora.
There are two varieties of black ora: black ora found in the treasure system and the scripted black ora used in specialty weapons and jewelry. Black ora from the treasure system is found cursed, but once uncursed will remain uncursed.
Purified Black ora
A more pure and powerful form of black ora is called purified black ora. It has been made available via Ebon Gate starting with its October 2026 run through the material purification service.
Purified black ora flares deal 2d15 psychic damage, with a 25% chance for that damage to be multiplied by 2 to 4. A target that survives must pass an internal SSR check or be terrified. Weaker results leave the target panicked (unable to attack, maneuver, or cast); stronger results immobilize it. Compatible with UCS.
- Purified Combat Example
You swing a black ora handaxe at an Ithzir janissary! AS: +473 vs DS: +432 with AvD: +30 + d100 roll: +89 = +160 ... and hit for 50 points of damage! Crossing slash to chest catches the Ithzir janissary's attention! ***The surface of your black ora handaxe absorbs the surrounding light, and a ripple of darkness lashes out from it! *** ... 13 points of damage! An Ithzir janissary freezes in place, shaking with terror! You swing a black ora handaxe at an Ithzir janissary! AS: +473 vs DS: +399 with AvD: +30 + d100 roll: +8 = +112 ... and hit for 8 points of damage! Jarring blow to the Ithzir janissary's back. ***The surface of your black ora handaxe absorbs the surrounding light, and a torrent of darkness tears out from it, coiling back to strike again and again! *** ... 76 points of damage! The Ithzir janissary sneers, "Urok vas derop tal kalissar kamath," then collapses. Roundtime: 4 sec.
Pawn Broker Messaging
Trying to get a pawnshop to appraise the value of a black ora item is quite amusing:
You ask the pawnbroker to appraise a bone-handled black ora scythe. The pawnbroker's eyes grow dark as he speaks to you in a hushed tone, "Take yourself and your evil scythe away from my sight!"
If the curse is neutralized with either a cleric spell or pure potion, this type of black ora may be appraised and sold as normal to the pawnshop.
