A player character (PC), often referred to as an adventurer, is a character that is played by a player. Player characters are often differentiated from non-player characters (NPCs) simply by how NPCs are presented in the game -- highlighted in a different color (often yellow. This is called "monsterbold") and are under the same list as items are placed in the room description, where player characters are placed in a separate list after the room description, appearing after the words, "Also here". GameMaster-run non-player characters are harder to identify, though, as they appear as player characters, mechanically.
