A maul, tetsubo, or sledgehammer is one of many large Two-Handed Weapons that is very useful against players and creatures that are in heavier armor types. Since the maul does only crushing damage, and due the crush critical table and the math behind cricital randomization, characters with a high enough attack strength and the ability to aim for the head can guarantee a fatal attack.
Maul used to be an alternate verb for a War mattock. Some old mauls are still mattock base, and can be converted at a portal in the local weapons shop.
