Basilican Guard
The Basilican Guard is the unit of elite Faendryl warriors specifically tasked with defending the Basilica and its presiding Patriarch. In the Modern Era they are only a palatine guard. In the distant past the Palestra were part of the Basilican Guard, but are now split off as a separate institution with their own Arch Chancellor, with much broader involvement throughout the Faendryl political economy. The Palestra thus acquired the more ancient "praetorian guard" powers and role of the old Basilican Guard, but the actual term "praetorian guard" (with more limited meaning) remains within the Basilica Guard.
Basilican Praetorian Guards
While the "Basilican Guards" proper guard the palace and the Patriarch, there are also praetorian guards below the Basilican Magistrate. These protect high-ranking figures in the Rachis, such as judges and ambassadors. These are effectively bodyguard roles. However, they are sought for positions, owing to their proximity to power. Those who would ladder jump, or are restricted elsewhere by nepotism laws, might seek to become proteges of powerful figures in the Basilica. This is in no small part due to the political, "top-down" appointment nature of such roles, compared to other parts of the Pentact.
Known Praetorian Guards:
- Vorenus Faendryl (Praetorian guard of Ambassador Vespasius)
- Titus Faendryl (Praetorian guard of Ambassador Vespasius)
- Severina Faendryl (Praetorian guard of Ambassador Vespasius)
- Quintus Faendryl (Praetorian guard of Ambassador Vespasius)
