Spinels are very similar to rubies and sapphires in physical properties, the differences being that rubies and sapphires are harder and more dense, and a ruby is dichroic while a spinel is refractive. Spinel and ruby are often found together.[1] In Elanthia, it is said that dwarves often sold spinels to humans, as humans could not tell the difference between a ruby and a red spinel or a sapphire and a blue spinel.
