Snowfall

[Town Square Central]

This is the heart of the main square of Wehnimer's Landing. The impromptu shops of the bazaar are clustered around this central gathering place, where townsfolk, travellers, and adventurers meet to talk, conspire or raise expeditions to the far-flung reaches of Elanith. At the north end, an old well, with moss-covered stones and a craggy roof, is shaded from the moonlight by a strong, robust tree. The oak is tall and straight, and it is apparent that the roots run deep. You also see some stone benches with some stuff on it and an herbal remedy donation bin.

Also here: Event Planner Leafiara, Sanguino who is sitting, Kronzcrest, Stormicore, Wental, Lord Hellionn, Mayor Tawariell, Dhairn, Grestone who is sitting, Lord Oldale, Mister Telum, Lord Morofinwe, Lord Musix who is sitting, Trallihn, Heluranc, Oglin, Lord Dannore, Lord Monthas, Lord Chamorr, Lord Siggurd, Fliayeb, Orlicks, Gypsy Scribe Balley, Rorac who is sitting, Xisum who is sitting

The sky is filled with a blanket of low clouds, pale and unmoving. Sounds seem muffled and the air feels thick and takes on a quiet stillness.

Leafiara curiously says, "Hm."

Dannore says, "Kitt does all the time."

Tawariell mutters, "Tha's ne'er a good sign."

Dannore says, "Die that is."

Siggurd carefully inspects his peach linen shirt.

Morofinwe quietly says, "Love the shirt."

Lazaryth says, "I might not be able to stay awake long enough to make it to that planning session tonight."

Balley softly says, "I am here and ready to go."

Tawariell exclaims, "Snow!"

Morofinwe quietly says, "Oh not more snow."

Dannore says, "I left Icemule to get away from snow."

Balley softly says, "Here we go again."

Speaking quietly to Dannore, Morofinwe asks, "Great planning, eh?"

Balley softly says, "Dead man."

Balley softly says, "Saw that 3 times in a row." [using her scrying bowl]

Balley softly says, "Not good."

Balley softly says, "Something is not right."

Speaking to Chamorr, Maags exclaims, "She won!"

Balley softly says, "Seeing a hanging dead man 3 times in a row in my bowl."

Speaking wryly to Balley, Leafiara says, "Ya don't say."

Balley softly says, "Not a good sign."

Maags says, "Somethings has not been right for a while."

Balley softly says, "Hanged man usually mean renewal or rebirth."

Balley softly says, "But 3 a row makes it stronger that things are bad and dying."

Balley softly says, "And people will be dying."

Balley softly says, "And darkness is around here."

Balley softly says, "Hidden behind others."

Chamorr licks Maags's cheek sloppily. Yuck!

Chamorr heartily says, "Mmmmm berries."

Chamorr flings himself against Maags, bounces off of her, and giggles madly!

Chamorr falls over.

Maags pulls Chamorr to his feet.

Speaking to Chamorr, Maags says, "Careful Bear. We need yous strong."

Speaking heartily to Maags, Chamorr says, "Tonite is yakkin, not whackin."

Speaking to Chamorr, Leafiara says, "...night is young."

Speaking to Chamorr, Maags says, "In general."

Speaking to Leafiara, Maags says, "And that."

Balley softly says, "I hope I am wrong."

Morofinwe quietly says, "I am too little to slay the big things."

Leafiara says, "...a moment."

[Leafi goes to investigate the militia barracks, looking for Thadston, but no go and she returns]

Speaking heartily to Balley, Chamorr says, "Not much, he limps a bit."

Balley softly says, "Something seems off with him as of late and it has been bothering me."

Balley softly says, "It is not the limp."

Speaking heartily to Balley, Chamorr says, "Seems as pushy an bossy as evah."

Balley softly says, "Just something seems off."

Balley softly says, "He has changed a bit."

Speaking to Balley, Leafiara says, "...desperation."

Balley softly says, "Maybe it is me that has changed."

Balley softly says, "But I feel a difference in him."

Speaking to Balley, Leafiara says, "All this over an attack that he doesn't even know for sure is coming."

Balley softly says, "We sure he is not under control or a spell."

Balley softly says, "Something seems soo off."

Speaking bluntly to Balley, Leafiara says, "Nope, can't be sure of that at all."

Balley softly says, "At least to me."

Speaking heartily to Balley, Chamorr says, "Could be."

Balley softly asks, "Do you think he seems off Leafi?"

Speaking to Balley, Leafiara says, "...I don't know. But his plan to evacuate people who don't want to go is wrong."

Speaking to Balley, Leafiara says, "That I'm sure of."

Balley softly says, "Yes."

Balley softly asks, "Walking away from fights?"

Balley softly says, "He walked away and did not fight the last paragon."

Balley softly says, "He disappeared." [To be fair, Raznel's interference with the portal sent Thadston off into "chaos" (or so Pylasar said). However, since Leafi saw Thadston as being in the wrong forcing people to evacuate, she wasn't about to defend him in any way.]

Balley softly says, "Like he did the time before that."

Balley softly says, "Like I said something seems off."

Balley softly says, "No need."

[another check of the barracks, but no Thadston]

Balley softly says, "But I still do not understand why he walks away from battle and makes us fight."

Balley softly says, "He should be fighting too not disappearing."

Balley softly says, "Time will tell."

Ten-Minute Warning

A group of uniformed militia members begin to move about the streets. Elsewhere, some blue steel golems march throughout the area.

Lylia: "Quite well overall."

Monthas asks, "Something up?"

Monthas asks, "More evacuations?"

Balley softly says, "Yes the forced evacuation."

Thadston: "Eve."

Balley softly says, "This does not seem right."

Evia: "Evenin."

Lylia: "Thadston."

Balley softly says, "Why does he want to thin our numbers."

Balley softly says, "I do not understand it."

[Leafi goes to scour the barracks yet again, but nothing]

[Town Barracks, Entryway]

The stone floor of the barracks entrance expands out in all directions, its smooth surface marred by numerous boot scuffs. To the east, through an open archway, the glimmer of metal armor and weapons can be seen, while the clatter and chatter of the dining hall echoes in from the south. A wide wooden stairwell dominates the western wall, rising up to reach the second floor.

Speaking to Lyrna, Leafiara says, "...a shame."

Lyrna asks, "About?"

Leafiara distractedly says, "Perhaps he's already out there..."

[Town Square, East]

Here in the center of a broad plaza near the commercial area of the bazaar stands the impressive facade of the slate-roofed Moot Hall, where the citizens of Wehnimer's Landing hold various official, religious and social functions. Facing the square are some of the town's more prosperous shops, still doing business with the many customers who still frequent the streets at night. You also see a moping lake spirit that is flying around, a pale-faced coppery barn owl, a poofy piebald flop-eared kitten, a pudgy frosting-covered dormouse, a volatile aurora spirit that is flying around, a sinuous bone white serpent, a polished bleakstone statue and a large purple wooden barrel. Also here: Lyrna, Event Planner Leafiara, Florania, Lord Thadston, Gypsy Scribe Balley, Lord Chamorr, Xorus, Maags, Lady Rainedrop, Melikor, Goldstr, Mayor Lylia, Dame Evia, Lord Thrassus

Goldstr says, "Sir Andrews."

Balley softly says, "Hello Thadston."

Chamorr heartily says, "Who leadin."

Thrassus asks, "Are we going somewhere?"

Maags says, "Pukk."

Maags says, "But problies he is hiding."

Lylia says, "Join me if you wish."

Speaking to Lylia, Maags exclaims, "Happilies!"

Speaking heartily to Thadston, Chamorr says, "Why is we evacuatin everyone again."

Speaking to a pale-faced coppery barn owl, Maags says, "If yous searching for Sir Knight, he is off on business tonight."

Thrassus says, "So they don't die of stupidity."

Goldstr says, "To save der lives Bear."

Thadston: "Good evening, citizens of Wehnimer's Landing. It is time. Many, many have already left. They have boarded ships, climbed into wagons, or found shelter beneath ground. We cannot, cannot allow any leverage for the witch should our conflict turn south, or she feel cornered. We must protect the Landing and her people. To that end, I am giving the town ten more minutes. Grab your important belongings, meet outside of Moot Hall, and willingly agree to be moved. It is only temporary. We will return. If you do not comply within ten minutes, I have ordered the militia to begin sweeps."

Evia says, "What was that phrase he used..."

Shinann just arrived.

Thadston slowly empties his lungs.

Thadston leans against the Moot Hall.

Speaking heartily to Goldstr, Chamorr says, "From what."

A uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman just arrived!

A uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman just arrived!

A uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman just arrived!

A uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman just arrived!

A uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman just arrived!

A uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman just arrived!

A uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman just arrived!

Speaking to Chamorr, Evia says, "From finding themselves burned to a cinders."

Thadston says, "Captain."

Thadston nods at Shinann.

Shinann nods at Thadston.

Balley softly asks, "Do you think this will really prevent her from burning the town?"

Lazaryth wryly says, "Not prevent."

Lylia says, "...No. The idea is that, even if the buildings are demolished, the people remain."

Speaking to Balley, Evia says, "Buildings are one thing, children and people are another."

Lylia says, "People, not buildings, make a town."

Thrassus says, "No, but it will keep the residents from burning with them."

Leafiara says, "...going through with it after all. All this for fear of an attack that no one's even sure will come."

Balley softly says, "That is true. I hope my vision was not right and the town is not burned to a pile of soot and ash."

Thadston says, "Strategy and the fog of war. It's real."

Thadston nods at Leafiara.

Evia asks, "In that respect it is like an approaching storm, it is coming, where shall it precisely land?"

Lylia says, "If people leave and there is no attack, then they return to their homes, little the worse for wear."

Leafiara shrugs at Thadston.

Lylia nods emphatically at Evia!

Lylia says, "Just so."

Maags says, "I believe the evacuations problies is a good idea but struggle to agree with forcing if they chose to stay."

Lylia says, "Choosing to stay is choosing to die."

Chamorr heartily says, "Everyone has a plan until someone gets punched in da face."

Maags says, "But onlies my half pint opinion."

Speaking to Leafiara, Goldstr says, "Tis best to lean toward da safe side M'Lady."

Xorus says, "Raznel would not hesitate to kill every man, woman, and child in this town for the pure cruelty and spite of it."

Lylia says, "To that end, anyone who chooses to stay should mark themselves in some way so the body can be identified after the fact."

Thadston asks, "Do you allow a stubborn child to put their hand in the fire, simply because they refuse to listen? Or do you grab their hand and keep it away?"

Thadston peers quizzically at Maags.

Speaking to Thadston, Maags says, "We are not discussing children and fire."

Speaking darkly to Lylia, Wolfloner asks, "Where are you sending them?"

Thadston asks, "Aren't we?"

Maags says, "No."

Lyrna says, "Depends on how often the child has tried to stick their hand in the fire before."

Puptilian says, "I refuse to force anyone to leave. This is the Landing and we are a hearty people. If people want to stay, let them pick up arms and fight for what is theirs. Yes people will die but doing so for their home is a good cause."

Speaking to Thadston, Leafiara says, "Good to know you think so little of the citizens."

Lylia says, "Some by water, some beneath the town itself."

Goldstr says, "But we are."

Thadston glances at Leafiara.

Leafiara smirks at Thadston.

Lylia says, "Some over land. How they go is their choice."

Madmountan asks, "Eh, what's a war without cannon fodder and collateral damage, right?"

Speaking to Thadston, Maags says, "The citizens of this town are not children! And the parents can decide best for their family."

Speaking to Puptilian, Lylia says, "Then it is good you are not in charge here."

Thadston says, "It is not an easy decision, or one done lightly, Puptilian, member of the Landing Militia."

Thadston says, "Fortunately, orders require less agreement and more execution."

Thadston says, "No one enjoys this."

Maags says, "Again I will say that the idea is a sound one. But the force...."

Speaking to Thadston, Leafiara asks, "...are you going to personally participate in the sweeps or try to keep your hands clean by ordering others to do it?"

Maags shrugs.

Maags says, "This town relies on free will and choice."

Chamorr heartily says, "Fortunately I am not in da militia."

Speaking in Faendryl, Thrassus says something you don't understand.

Lylia snaps, "Keep his hands clean!?"

Thadston says, "I will participate. I will not ask of the militia anything I too will not do."

Speaking to Lylia, Leafiara affirms, "I said it."

Lylia asks, "Whose hands are dirtied by saving lives?"

Speaking to Thadston, Puptilian says, "Let those that want to leave leave. Those that want to fight fight. I will happily spend as much time in the barracks training grounds putting those that want to stay through hell training."

Lylia says, "Yes, you say a great many witless things."

Leafiara smirks at Lylia.

Lylia says, "I am aware of this."

Lylia says, "Now we all are."

Lylia says, "Let us move on."

Thadston says, "You're needed tonight to help with sweeps."

Thadston nods at Puptilian.

Goldstr says, "Der be no freer will an choice if dey be dead."

Puptilian asks, "Sweeps?"

Thadston: "Citizens, time is running out."

Leafiara says, "I suppose we're to carry this out to the rest of our lives. Why not? Let's heal and resurrect those who decline help."

Thrassus says, "Yes, those that refuse to leave are to be found and escorted out."

Leafiara mockingly asks, "Because they 'need us,' right?"

Rainedrop quietly asks, "Define sweeps exactly... is it a shooing out or shackle and drag?"

Lyrna muses, "This is an advantage to having your entire citizenry trained in combat." [referring to her previous home of Ta'Vaalor]

Maags asks, "Can the witch not attack the ship as easies as the town?"

Evia: "Consider your safety, your lives, and those of your families and friends who shall find themselves in terrible peril."

Puptilian says, "As I said I refuse to force anyone from their home."

Wolfloner darkly asks, "Perhaps the angst is caused by opposing views. Those whose background is in a free society versus those who were raised under a feudal system?"

Maags asks, "If she is after our people?"

Speaking bluntly to Thadston, Leafiara says, "I'm truly at a loss here."

Lylia says, "Time is short. I am not going to stand about arguing with people who should be leading the way to safety and instead wish only to quarrel."

Pukk just arrived.

Rainedrop quietly says, "Asking for a friend."

Avalera says, "I will gladly lead anyone to safety who feel they need it."

Maags says, "Or the tunnels or the wagons."

Lyrna says, "Pukk! Just in time to throw your 10 silver in."

Pukk says, "I have none."

Maags says, "Fine."

Madmountan just handed Pukk some coins.

Zosopage just handed Pukk some coins.

Thadston says, "Obedience and duty are not always about understanding the why, but executing the order." [I assume this is a response to Wolfloner and gave him the bolding, though really it could be a more general statement]

Speaking to Wolfloner, Lylia says, "More like those who have witnessed total devastation before and those who have a score of years to their names and know less than they think."

Rasson says, "Well some have said one man defending is home is worth 10 soldiers tryin to take it..."

Zosopage says, "Oy now he has twenty silvers."

Lyrna says, "Enough for two opinions."

Ongoing Objections

Some townspeople begin to exit their homes and neighborhoods, weaving through the streets and avenues of town, heading towards Moot Hall.

Speaking to Thadston, Puptilian says, "You never did understand this town or its people. While there will be many that will want to leave and I'll gladly help them, there are many stubborn people that live this far outside of civilzation. These people will glady pick up sword or bow and help defend this town. They know they will die but they also know it's better to face evil than to tuck tail and leave."

Speaking to Thadston, Leafiara says, "You were already a controversial enough marshal to draw out the Warcats. Assuming we even survive this, you'll only be moreso afterward."

Evia says, "They are coming."

Monthas says, "It's about to get crowded in here."

Speaking heartily to Lylia, Chamorr says, "And this is yer directive Mayor."

Leafiara adds, "But I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know."

Speaking darkly to Lylia, Wolfloner asks, "And if Raznel discerns what is going on? You think the risk the same either way?"

Lylia says, "Yes, though not mine alone. The Town Council and I speak with one voice on this."

Thadston says, "I am not here to win favor. I am here to protect lives in a way I see fit."

Lylia says, "It does not matter if she knows what is afoot."

Thadston glances at Leafiara.

Speaking to Puptilian, Rasson says, "I am with you, arm any able bodies who want to defend their home."

Lylia says, "She cannot kill everyone at sea, in the tunnels, to the north, and far from town."

Rasson says, "Arm."

Madmountan says, "Just saying, this is what she would want. Us infighting and harming/killing our own townspeople. She will get much amusement from tonight. Perhaps as much as she will get from killing the townspeople herself. Food for thought."

Maags says, "I spose I am also not convinced anybodies is safer on a ship or a wagon when Raznel's reach is as far and wide as it is."

Lylia says, "There is no defense against a storm."

Speaking to Lylia, Maags asks, "Why?"

Stormyrain just arrived.

Lylia asks, "Why?"

Thadston says, "We are not harming anyone."

Thadston says, "Captain."

Lylia asks, "Why is there no defense against a storm, you mean?"

Thadston nods at Stormyrain.

Thrassus says, "Only stunning them if necessary."

Speaking to Thadston, Madmountan says, "Remind me you said that in an hour."

Speaking to Lylia, Maags asks, "Why she cannot reach them on ships and elsewhere?"

Thadston says, "The militia will begin their sweeps shortly."

Maags says, "I believe she can."

Lylia says, "She cannot reach all of us at once. That is why the plans are to move people to the winds, not in one place."

Thadston asks, "Captains, north or south. Which do you prefer to begin with?"

Thadston peers quizzically at Stormyrain.

Thadston peers quizzically at Shinann.

Evia says, "The chances that she could reach all if they are in many different areas is far less."

Evia says, "Than all in a clump in the town."

Monthas says, "I would start with the dock area."

A tiny kitten unceremoniously flops down at your feet and purrs happily, nuzzling against your shins.

Monthas says, "It's creepy over there."

Thadston says, "Alendrial has ships ready for the unwilling."

Chamorr heartily says, "I'll start at Helga's."

Speaking to Stormyrain, Puptilian says, "I am refusing to do...sweeps. I am going to the barracks to train what new militia recruits we pick up tonight who are staying to defend our town. You can discipline me later if needed. I have work to do."

Rainedrop quietly asks, "Can I have the kitten? Who will save the kitten!?"

Thadston glances at Puptilian.

Lylia says, "Any who remain should mark their bodies in some fashion so they may be recognized by their next of kin."

Goldstr says, "Members folks da Witch mus be weakeneda bunch wid her Paragons gone."

Thadston says, "That wasn't an option provided."

Thadston nods at Puptilian.

Thadston says, "We need able bodies to help."

Stormyrain clenches her jaw.

Leafiara says, "We make our own way here. Going all the way back to Rone Wehnimer founding the Wayside Inn."

Madmountan says, "I think we also have to remember that there is a distinction between your average townsperson, and your able-bodied and well-trained adventurer. The latter are likely welcome to stay. It's the schmos we don't have time to train that need to leave. And the kids and regular folks."

Maags says, "Perhaps they all should. Tho problies will not help at the bottom of the sea."

Speaking to Thadston, Puptilian says, "You said townspeople have to go. If soomeone is militia they stay and fight. Nothing wrong with people joining to defend the town. I'm sure we'll need the hands."

Speaking darkly to Thadston, Wolfloner says, "These are free men, woman and families. You might try persuasion instead of brute force. Give them the option. They are not your serfs."

Pukk says, "I still want to do the bank. I will take charge of keeping all the silvers safe."

Lylia says, "It is best to ink your name on your torso. Dogs may eat your limbs, leading to the same problem as before. We wish to identify those who have stayed in defiance of a mandatory evacuation."

Thadston says, "They had the option, for the last two nights."

Chamorr heartily says, "When they are gone, can we loot their houses."

Puptilian says, "And the night isn't over."

Thadston says, "We've already seen ships and wagons full of townspeople leave."

Speaking to Chamorr, Lyrna says, "NO."

Speaking darkly to Thadston, Wolfloner says, "The only option is your way."

Speaking to Chamorr, Evia says, "If they do I will arrest you myself."

Palfin quietly asks, "Are they going to loot the bank?"

Balley softly asks, "I am not militia and I am a person of this town. Does that mean you are going to force me to leave?"

Lylia declares, "Looters will be arrested immediately."

Speaking heartily to Lyrna, Chamorr asks, "Even if they has scotch?"

Zosopage says, "If people wish to stay and perish, that is their right."

Lyrna says, "Even if they have scotch."

Speaking darkly to Lylia, Wolfloner says, "You are the Mayor. Hopefully fortune will smile on your decision."

Rasson says, "Not looting, relcating their stuff to a safer place."

Speaking to Lylia, Pukk asks, "Is it looting if I take the silvers to guard while everybody is gone?"

Thadston says, "Neither of you are Mayor, regardless of your longing for what was, or what could be. I am the acting Marshal, and the militia have their orders."

Thadston glances between Puptilian and Leafiara.

Speaking to Rasson, Loamian says, "Forcibly, if necessary."

Shinann says, "I have been talking to people since last night. Most have been willing to leave. The others... well honestly the others do not trust me."

Lazaryth asks, "Is it time?"

Thadston says, "What we do, is for the people. It is a tough decision, but it is necessary."

Chamorr heartily says, "Resign from da militia then."

Lyrna asks, "Don't trust you?"

Speaking evenly to Thadston, Leafiara says, "I'm well aware what will happen tonight, no matter what I say. Just as long as my thoughts are clear, I'm satisfied."

Speaking quietly to Shinann, Lylia says, "Thank you. I have also gone home to home."

Thadston nods.

Rasson says, "For the greater good..."

Thadston: "It is time. Militia, take your posts."

Stormyrain clenches her fist.

Evia: "If you have intention of not complying with mandatory evacuations, best high tail it out of town right now and right fast and right far."

Pukk asks, "Did somebody ensure that Shantytown was cleared?"

Shinann says, "They think that I am planted by the witch because of her mother."

Palfin quietly says, "Oh? Good gods."

Speaking to Thadston, Puptilian says, "Never claimed to be the militia and I never forced the townspeople to leave when I was one. I'm doing what I have done well before you thought to care about this town. Protect the town and its people. If that is a problem with you, you are more than welcome to take it up with my captain." [note: given the context of his reply, I'm pretty sure that should be "Never claimed to be the mayor," which I'd ordinarily correct as a typo, but can't in this case since Thadston ends up running with it as was spoken]

Thadston asks, "Captains. Are you ready?"

Speaking to Thadston, Shinann says, "I am sure it will be the same ones that refused me earlier."

Lazaryth says, "I may hold.. my own opinion on the matter, but being forcefully taken from a town that may be about to be destroyed is hardly the worst thing you can do to someone."

Speaking to Stormyrain, Puptilian says, "You know where I'll be."

You notice Puptilian moving stealthily west.

Stormyrain says, "I do. Thank you."

Stormyrain glances west.

Thadston glances at Stormyrain.

Lylia says, "Deaths will be on your head."

Thadston asks, "I want his badge when this is over. Understood?"

Thadston peers quizzically at Stormyrain.

Lylia mutters something about Puptilian.

Speaking to Thadston, Stormyrain says, "We'll discuss that later."

Thrassus says, "A small jolt of electricity should incapacitate malingerers enough for removal."

Thadston says, "There's nothing to discuss."

Stormyrain says, "There will be."

Shinann says, "They are frightened. They think I am working with the witch. I will try again."

Maags says, "Clearlies."

Thadston says, "He said so himself. He never claimed to be the militia."

Speaking darkly to Thadston, Wolfloner says, "The people of this town are not serfs. You would do well to not treat them as such."

Thadston says, "So he has no need for the badge, uniform, or title."

Monthas says, "Wow, that is harsh truth."

Stormyrain says, "And if we removed everyone who disobeyed one order, or felt they weren't part of some imperial style military group, we'd have no one."

Thadston asks, "Now, Captains, are you both ready?"

Zosopage says, "The militia, not in the militia." [this too is a very possible interpretation, even if it was a typo in the first place]

Speaking to a tiny kitten, Pukk says, "Govner."

A grizzled old warrior wanders in, whistling a merry tune.

Speaking to a grizzled old warrior, Loamian asks, "Will you be removed for your own safety?"

Speaking heartily to a grizzled old warrior, Chamorr says, "Pack yer kit, we throwin you out."

Lylia says, "This is not disobeying one order. This is leaving people to die because others will follow his obdurate example."

Thadston glances between Stormyrain and Shinann.

Shinann says, "No, but I will do what I must. They did not see Talador. I did."

Goldstr says, "Take folks to Voln Sir."

Thadston nods at Shinann.

Thadston asks, "Captain?"

Thadston peers quizzically at Stormyrain.

Speaking to Lylia, Stormyrain says, "He's not staying, he's training new recruits that want to help."

Maags says, "It is not -leaving people to die-"

Lylia says, "Those deaths will be on his hands. I shall remind him, should we both live."

Maags says, "If they insist on staying."

Speaking to Thadston, Stormyrain says, "This is your event, Marshal. By all means, give the order."

Thadston says, "Let's begin then."

Thadston nods.

Maags says, "Jus clarifying."

Speaking to Maags, Goldstr says, "Truth be it is."

Lazaryth says, "The best reason to tread carefully is simply that we may have to do this evacuation again. And again, throughout the lifetime of this town."

Stop the Proceedings

A black arrow flies out of the shadows and strikes the ground just an inch before Thadston's foot.

Lazaryth says, "And if we do it either without good cause or too roughly, people will be even less willing to follow along the next time."

Lylia: "Those who defy the mandatory evacuation should write their names on their bodies somewhere so their next of kin may identify them more readily. Do not choose an arm or a leg, as limbs are more easily lost."

Bernadette softly says, "Hmm."

Thadston squints.

Shinann raises an eyebrow.

Thadston twists his head slightly, cracking his neck. He looks relieved.

Pukk yells, "You missed!"

Pukk exclaims, "Try again!"

Pukk says, "I mean..."

Pukk softly says, "Watch out."

Rasson says, "Guess Mother has a different idea."

Shinann says, "That is not her."

Balley softly asks, "Who is it from then?"

Stormyrain says, "Mother is helping with the evacuations."

Speaking to Shinann, Maags asks, "Her aim is better?"

Speaking to a tiny kitten, Evia says, "Go hide baby, go hide."

Speaking darkly to Thadston, Wolfloner says, "Your heavy handed tactics are already bearing fruit."

Speaking to a tiny kitten, Loamian says, "In here."

Shinann says, "She is assisting in the evacuation."

Rasson says, "Then a fan I guess."

Pukk yells, "I bet who ever shot that arrow can hit Thaddy!"

Speaking to Wolfloner, Leafiara agrees, "Even more quickly than I expected."

Pukk yells, "Just try it...he will dodge it!"

Dark hooded figures rise from the horizon of the town's rooftops, their beaked masks gleaming in the moonlight. Dozens more step out into view on the streets, emerging from the shadows of alleyways. They all seem to be centered near Moot Hall.

Shinann says, "Well."

Alosaka asks, "They... aren't militia, are they?"

Rasson says, "Sure looks like Mother's people."

Balley softly says, "This can not be good."

Speaking to Shinann, Pukk says, "Deep subject."

Zosopage says, "I wonder what their position on all this is."

Speaking heartily to Thadston, Chamorr says, "I don't think they heard the orders."

Stormyrain says, "Could be militia. But also Rooks it would seem."

From a nearby alley, a slender figure appears, her featureless black mask covered in red sigils. A red soulstone ring shimmers on her hand.

Maags says, "Somethin about a rock...."

Speaking to Pukk, Shinann asks, "Already turning on me?"

A plump white mouse asks, "Here we go?"

From nearby, Mother says, "There will be no sweeps."

Speaking to Shinann, Pukk says, "I just said, deep subject....well...it is."

You notice a vein pulsing in Thadston's forehead.

Speaking to Shinann, Rasson says, "So much for her help."

Speaking softly to Shinann, Razanetika says, "I do believe Rasson was correct."

Evia says, "Oh shut it MOM."

Zosopage says, "Well that answers that."

Lylia wearily asks, "You wish them to die, then?"

Maags says, "Between a Rook and a hard place. Would never have thought it."

Speaking heartily to Maags, Chamorr says, "Wow."

Balley softly asks, "You do not agree with the sweeps Mother?"

From nearby, Mother says, "The Brotherhood was, and remains more than happy to assist with the transportation, escort and protection of our citizens willing to leave their homes. We will not participate in the removal of citizens against their will. It is their choice. It is always their choice."

Lylia says, "Then they choose to die."

Speaking heartily to Maags, Chamorr says, "I'm stayin out of it."

Speaking to Chamorr, Maags says, "First time for everything."

Leafiara admits, "Had me worried for a bit, Mother. I wondered if everyone would finally get their wish of me decrying the Rooks, but you've made the right call."

Rasson says, "Sound reasoning to me."

Dannore says, "Staying puts the people who have to rescue them at risk."

Dannore says, "More non coms leaving means less rescues needed."

Goldstr says, "I disagree but dey do have der choice."

Thadston squints.

Zosopage says, "They stay at their own risk with the knowledge of perhaps not being rescued."

From nearby, Mother says, "I repeat, there will be no sweeps."

Evia says, "So she is taking charge of the entire town eh? Impressive--not."

From nearby, Mother says, "You will find resistance, and you do not have the luxury to spread your efforts and weaken your defenses."

Razanetika softly says, "Now that I agree with."

From nearby, Mother says, "If a single citizen is pulled from their home, the ships at dock will burn."

Speaking to Evia, Goldstr says, "Jess like da Rooks always been."

Evia says, "Criminal."

Razanetika softly says, "That's a bit drastic."

Thrassus asks, "So, I take it you are taking responsibility for thier certain deaths, then?"

Lyrna says, "Well, that makes them MUCH more safe."

Goldstr says, "Er like."

Speaking to Thadston, Leafiara says, "You and I, and anyone else standing here might not make it out of the Bleaklands alive. We have the right to go risk our lives in a danger we know is coming, and the people here have the right to risk their lives in a danger we don't even know is coming."

From nearby, Mother says, "The militia need not risk their lives for those who remain. The Brotherhood is here to protect."

Balley softly says, "Why should we force people out. I understand your logic and reasoning. If people want to stay and not heed the warning. Why force them. That does not seem right. It almost feels like you are trying to weak us and thin the numbers of those who will help fight."

Stormyrain says, "The militia will always protect the town and the folks of the Landing."

Thadston glances at Leafiara.

Lylia says, "Then on your head be it."

Speaking to Thadston, Stormyrain says, "Even if they chose differently than we think they should."

Mayor Lylia's group just entered the Moot Hall.

[everyone heads back out]

Your Move

Some of the gathered militia members look at Thadston, waiting, slightly confused.

Razanetika recites softly:

"Form on Leafiara"

Cruxophim amusedly notes, "Party of all sorts, eh?"

Evia asks, "To do what, aid Rooks?"

Speaking to Razanetika, Pukk exclaims, "You are now the Herald in training!"

A militiaman asks, "Orders, Marshal?"

Aeith says, "We should not be fighting amongst ourselves. We are all on the same side here. The side of the Landing."

Speaking to Evia, Alosaka says, "I just heal the wounded."

Speaking calmly to Thadston, Leafiara says, "Your move."

Stormyrain glances at a uniformed Wehnimer's militiaman.

Speaking to Thadston, Goldstr says, "Sir Forcing dem may be wrong. If dey wish to die so be it."

Zosopage says, "Forcing people out may only make them dislike us and the Mayor. Not what we need."

Thadston glances between Stormyrain and Shinann.

In a fair imitation of Thadston, Pukk exclaims, "Stand down militia!"

Speaking to Thadston, Madmountan says, "Forcing the small percentage that won't leave to leave probably isn't worth provoking this war tonight. I'm not usually the one trying to be on the side of reason, but...I think this is true."

Thadston looks at the gathered crowd of townspeople.

Speaking to Aeith, Maags says, "It is the usual of things when in a bind."

Pukk says, "There we go...all set."

Stormyrain settles her gaze on Thadston, watching him intently.

Rasson says, "Forcing people out is wrong, not may be."

Maags says, "Unfortunatlies."

Shinann folds her hands behind her back.

Zosopage says, "Could do more harm than good in the long run."

Thadston asks, "Citizens gathered, will you heed our advice? We have transportation ready. You have come here tonight for a reason. Will you let us escort you away?"

Taking a Stand

A townsperson steps forward, unsheathing a rusty sword from his frayed sheath.

Speaking amusedly to Thadston, Cruxophim wonders, "Why should this be any different than any other incursion?"

The townsperson says, "I will fight."

Madmountan says, "Let him."

Dannore says, "Not with that rusty pigsticker."

Speaking indifferently to some gathered townspeople, Cruxophim agrees, "So fight with the rest of us."

Leafiara says, "That's the spirit Puptilian was speaking of."

Speaking to some gathered townspeople, Stormyrain says, "Pup is in the barracks ready to help train anyone who wishes it."

Shinann says, "This is what I heard the most today."

Pukk yells, "Puppy power!"

Madmountan says, "I have a locker full of non-rusty pigstickers they can have."

A second townsperson steps forward, wielding a dagger and a small shield more dented than round. "Whatever the witch brings, this is my home. I will fight."

Speaking to some gathered townspeople, Stormyrain says, "You can go and he will help you be on the ready."

Aeith says, "Let those who want to be evacuated be evacuated. Let those who want to stay and fight stay and fight."

Thadston squints.

Zosopage says, "We will need as many to protect the town while we are in the Bleaklands. They have the right to protect their homes should they choose to."

Dannore says, "I mean I have like 10 polearms on me somewhere."

Speaking dryly to some gathered townspeople, Cruxophim explains, "You hit them with the pointy end."

Madmountan gathers up a long razern misericord, a glyph-incised dark veil iron maul, a sigil-etched dark vultite claidhmore, a dark runic lor-hafted sledgehammer and a glowing coraesine mekya ne'rutka in his hands. One by one, he tosses them in the air where they flip end over end until all of the weapons are airborne. Madmountan catches each one as they fall and sends them back in the air, creating a dazzling aerobatic display.

Speaking to some gathered townspeople, Goldstr asks, "How ye gonna fight mass fires?"

A third, fourth, sixth, tenth...soon a dozen or more townspeople step forward, weapons drawn, shields on display. Some look brave, some are pretending. But they all agree. "We will not run. We will fight."

Pukk exclaims, "Madmountan will distract them with his juggling...as he does that...we attack from behind!"

Leafiara suggests, "Stock up more heavily on buckets than usual."

Speaking nonchalantly to Goldstr, Cruxophim answers, "Buckets."

Heluranc quietly says, "I'd guess with a bucket brigade."

Chamorr heartily says, "These folks have been through Denny, Slim, Chaston, and a host of others."

Dannore says, "Someone take my sword and use this."

Dannore drops a short sword.

Madmountan says, "Still just a little over a dozen 'brave souls.'"

Wolfloner darkly says, "It is their choice."

Speaking to Thadston, Stormyrain asks, "Surely you would not deny them the right to stand for what they believe in, even if you think their path to be folly?"

Chamorr heartily says, "They know what's comin."

Speaking in Faendryl, Thrassus exclaims something you don't understand.

Speaking to some gathered townspeople, Lazaryth asks, "You realize that it may be a magical conflagration you face, not an army...?"

Stormyrain whispers something to Thadston.

Thadston squints.

Speaking to Cruxophim, Goldstr says, "Wonna be enuff buckets fer da Witch's work."

Thadston glances between Stormyrain and Shinann.

Speaking to Lazaryth, Leafiara says, "I personally explained it in detail to many I see here."

Aeith says, "Let them know the dangers, let them make their own choices."

Cruxophim dully remarks, "People have a right to choose their fate."

Rasson says, "Take up arms, there are 30 more on the counter of the weapon shop to any who want a new sword."

Speaking to Thadston, Madmountan says, "We've had more collateral damage than the percentage that will stay, just over the past few months."

Maags says, "Exactlies."

Speaking to Lazaryth, Leafiara adds, "I'm sure the captains and other militia did too."

Thadston glances at the crowd of townspeople and militia, then glances to the figures on the rooftop and in the alleyways.

Speaking to some gathered townspeople, Evia asks, "Who shall protect your children while you fight? Where shall they be safe?"

Balley softly says, "Swords and buckets will not protect from magic I do not think."

Lyrna quietly says, "There is no good answer to this." Pinching the toggle on his heavy canvas hip-satchel, Zolis opens the flap to the sibilant hiss of a serpent.

Thadston says, "Captain Stormyrain and Shinann. Please spend the next two evenings opening up the town barracks and equipping these citizens with better arms."

Stormyrain nods.

Speaking to some gathered townspeople, Evia asks, "Where shall you find shelter for the weak and infirm? What is your plan for them?"

Shinann says, "Yes, sir."

Thadston says, "I won't have them die with a rusty blade in their hand."

Stormyrain loudly vows, "For Wehnimer's!"

Speaking lightly to Lyrna, Leafiara says, "There is, if you believe in an ideal instead of trying to predict the future."

Madmountan says, "I will seriously donate well-crafted arms to the militia."

Speaking darkly to Thadston, Wolfloner says, "Well said."

Zosopage says, "I would expect most if not all the women and children would leave and the able bodied are the ones that wish to stay behind. I could be wrong but that would be the majority at least."

Pukk yells, "Good job Mother!"

Pukk says, "She did well."

Zosopage says, "So give them better weapons."

Balley softly asks, "You are saying women can not fight as hard as men?"

Thadston says, "We've work to do. We attack the Bleaklands at month's end. We will need to strike both Brumas, end the last paragon, and strike the witch."

Speaking to Pukk, Goldstr says, "Was da Townfolks nae Mother."

Lyrna says, "No, there is no good outcome, but I agree that force against our own people is not the answer."

Zosopage says, "I said most, not all."

Speaking to Goldstr, Pukk asks, "Who do you think rustled them up?"

Speaking heartily to Thadston, Chamorr says, "Die with honor, better than cowerin in the bowels of some boat."

Zosopage says, "Most if not that is."

Dannore says, "The militia should have an armory they can open up for better weapons."

Speaking to Goldstr, Pukk says, "You know better to not understand that part."

Thadston: "Militia, stand down, and report to your Captains. That's an order."

Thadston rubs his crystal amulet.

Thadston gets an odd look on his face.

Zolis deeply says, "Easy for one to say when one's death isn't permanent."

Speaking heartily to Thadston, Chamorr says, "Will that be a two pronged attack."

Thadston says, "I hope you are all ready. We'll see it all put to the test soon enough."

Zosopage says, "I also said able bodied to stay behind. That would include women. Geeze you guys are harsh."

Thadston says, "Goodnight."

Thadston nods at Chamorr.

Lord Thadston just marched off to the north.
