Fishing equipment is used as part of the to catch fish. Required fishing equipment to utilize the fishing system include a fishing rod, line, and lure. A sinker may also be used but is not required.

A Super-Fish-All Tackle Box can store fishing equipment, with identical lures and weights stacking inside.

For full information, see the main fishing article.

Fishing Rod

Most fishing rod verb traps emulate the new fishing system verbs associated with the FISH command. They are interchangeable whenever using a new style fishing area.

A fishing rod needs, at minimum, some line attached as well as a lure of some type. Without a sinker, the line can be cast out at just the surface level. Adding a sinker will allow the line to be cast at middle depth or bottom depth, depending on the sinker weight. Attached lures and sinkers can be removed via GET.

While not shown in the analyze, a rod with a line attached can be CUT to remove an already-attached line. Removing a line by this method destroys the line on the rod but also allows for it to be replaced if it has been damaged via use.

Casting and reeling in a line both cause roundtime. If a fish is on the line, reeling it in also shows an open roll, which determines the action's success or failure.

Analyze

You analyze the black fishing rod and sense that the item is largely free from merchant alteration restrictions.

The creator has also provided the following information:
Any willing merchant should be able to alter the physical description of the black fishing rod, but it must visibly remain a "fishing" rod or pole, and the noun should make sense with this purpose.

It also traps the following verbs, though many of these can be found in the FISH verb.

PULL: Reels in line, emulating FISH REEL
PUSH: casts nearby, emulating FISH CAST NEAR
WAVE: casts mid-range, emulating FISH CAST MIDDLE
RAISE: casts far, emulating FISH CAST FAR
LOOK: shows current status of rod

You get no sense of whether or not the rod may be further lightened.

Line

A line is required to use a fishing rod. Lines come in the form of a string, line, or wire that is coiled up, and a portion can be cut off of the entire spool via PULL. Once removed from the spool, the cut line can be added to a fishing rod via PUT. Lines can come in different strengths, which can be identified via LOOK. Lines purchased at pay events such as Ebon Gate are generally the strongest available.

As line is used while attached to a fishing rod, its condition degrades. Weaker lines degrade faster than stronger lines. Using LOOK ROD will indicate the condition of the line. Line condition starts at "excellent condition" then goes to "decent condition", then "showing signs of wear", and finally "frayed and in danger of snapping soon" when it is nearing its end.

Analyze

You get the distinct sense that any willing merchant can alter the aesthetics of this silvery fishing line, provided it always results in "fishing" line of some sort ("a length of/<adj> fishing/<noun>" -- with the noun as line, wire, string, etc.).

Currently, you can use this line for fishing, and you can also try to PULL it.

Usage

Verb First Third
LOOK A spool of blue fishing line is a spool of fishing line that has 11 lengths of line left on it.

The blue fishing line looks somewhat strong.
PULL You uncoil a bit of wire from your blue fishing line and snap it off swiftly. This section has not been added yet; please add to it now!

Lure

A lure is required to use a fishing rod. It can be added to a fishing rod via PUT. Lures may be general and work for all depths of fishing, or they may be set up to work best at a certain depth, such as on the surface. Using LOOK with a lure will identify what depths it works best at as well as the bonus it provides for each depth.

Analyze

You get the distinct sense that any willing merchant can alter the aesthetics of this ebon gate lure, provided it always remains a "lure" or an appropriate type of food/bait. No live bait is allowed on this particular item, however.

Currently, you can use this lure for fishing.

Usage

Verb First Third
LOOK The blue lyretail is a fishing lure with the following qualities:

+5 to attracting fish near the surface
+5 to attracting fish at middle depths
+5 to attracting fish in deep water

Sinker

A sinker is an optional item to use on a fishing rod. It can be added to a fishing rod via PUT. A sinker will cause the cast line to sink to a lower depth, either middle depth or to the bottom, depending on the sinker's weight. Using either LOOK or WEIGH with a sinker will identify how far it will cause a line's hook to sink in a body of water - either to the middle depth or to the bottom.

Analyze

You get the distinct sense that any willing merchant can alter the aesthetics of this blown glass weight, provided it always remains a "weight" in name.

Currently, you can use this weight for fishing. You can also try to TURN and WEIGH it.

Usage

Verb Style First Third
LOOK Middle Depth The weight looks like it is heavy enough to sink a line to the middle depths of a body of water.
Bottom The weight looks like it is heavy enough to sink a line to the bottom of a body of water.
TURN You lightly twirl the iron weight around in your fingers. This section has not been added yet; please add to it now!
WEIGH Middle Depth Judging by the shape and heaviness of the volcanic rock weight, you estimate that it would be suitable for hovering in the depths rather than the bottom or the surface. This section has not been added yet; please add to it now!
Bottom Judging by the shape and heaviness of the iron weight, you estimate that it would sink right to the bottom. This section has not been added yet; please add to it now!
