Context:
After months and months of war with Gnul and later Haidan and the Remnants funded by the Wraith, Lord Elidal's outward show of bravado and optimism never changed. On the other hand, after Commander Sablo foolishly ambushed, poisoned, and captured the Ember Vale reivers' representative Rheshay during a parley between her and Wehnimer's Landing, the Ember Vale retaliated days later by capturing Lady Aronia, which left Elidal a worried mess.
As people reminded him that war was to be expected, he finally grew frustrated enough to blurt out that he'd already known, saying that everything he read while researching the area told him to run. However, he revealed his savior complex in the same breath as he explained that he didn't run because the Landing deserved better. The Landing, of course, had never asked for him nor any nearby barony in the first place because it was doing just fine without for centuries, but somehow Elidal persists in believing that he's the solution to every problem.
