Yllira Symisiri

Translation from Aelotian: "Winds Carry", an expression of gratitude.
Performed on 16 Koaratos, 5104, in Ta'Vaalor, at the first Aelotoi cultural pageant.
**Originally titled 'Yllyc Symisiri', this piece has been adjusted to match current official Aelotian language documentation, which did not exist at the time of writing.
 We toil in darkness,
 I care for your pain.
 And oft when I struggle,
 Brought low by the strain,
 You bear on your shoulders
 The blows meant for me.
   Yllira symisiri --
   Thy winds carry me.

 The Vaer'sah out scouting
 Spy something amiss --
 Such cries of excitement!
 Fear turning to bliss.
 For those who first sighted
 Our new home-to-be,
   Yllira symisiri --
   Thy winds carry me.

 We race through the tunnels
 And take to the sky.
 The portal's ahead,
 And faster we fly.
 Farewell, sweet Bre'Naere,
 We're soon to be free!
   Yllira symisiri --
   Thy winds carry me.

 The Masters give chase,
 Their chitters a fright,
But old traitors will turn now,
 And wingless will fight.
 So many won't make it,
 No green land to see...
   Yllira symisiri --
   Thy winds carry me.

 Yllira symisiri --
 I give thanks for thee.
By thy care and thy efforts,
 I continue to be.
 No friend could be truer,
 No aid so worthy,
   Yllira symisiri --
   Thy winds carry me.

Loved One 2

A response to Luminasa's song to Nayolan after a long parting.
Performed at Bevan's concert in early Jastatos 5104.
A tearful goodbye, when we parted ways,
And so came to ending our warm summer days.
Fear long held at bay was free to take hold,
For jackals oft torment the untended fold.
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

The sharp prick of fangs, the snapping of jaws,
Striking at heels and slashing with claws.
Herd the prey this way, block the way there,
On the edge, out of room, out of time, out of air.
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

"You'll come when we call," bayed the jackals with spite,
"You'll ssstep how we wisssh," hissed the snakes, out of sight.
"No protection from us, not now and not then,
You'll sing to our tune, our sparrow, our wren."
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

Just one step would end it, one last heartfelt flight,
One hurtling plunge from the cliff, in the night.
No thin wings of useless gold gossamer save,
No clan-kin to guard from a cold earthen grave.
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

No fear, but a promise, kept a songbird from death,
No shadows long-reaching would steal this last breath,
No thought but a memory, while hopes tarnished black,
A soft, silver voice saying "I will come back."
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

Days grow ever shorter, a frigid wind wakes,
A dance spun for jackals, a breast bared for snakes.
When demons come calling, a bird learns to pay heed,
Or else keen a new song, scream in pain, wail and bleed.
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

And yet, in the cold depths of winter, warmth lives,
In the laugh of a stranger, in the smile that he gives.
In a haven from harm, no true barricade, still,
A warm hearth and friendship can stave off the chill.
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

And look, in the darkness, a steady star gleams,
Eternal and constant, its stable light streams,
Bright shining as white flame, it grows ever near,
And a sweet silver whisper says, "Daughter, I'm here."
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

No darkness can linger when hope flares anew,
No tarnish can sully that silvery hue.
No depths can consume it, nor fires from above,
No music is sweeter than a gaze filled with love.
Heart new reborn, heart longing to fly,
Heart borne by the light in a loved one's eyes.

Aminaera L'Naere

Translation from Aelotian: "L'Naere's Love" or, more loosely, "Mother's Love"
Performed at the Festival of Contemplation in Solhaven on 8 Olaesta 5105, and again at Argent Aspis's Tenth Annual Bardfest in Koaratos 5105.
 L'Naere-mother brought us here,
Guarding us from harm and fear,
Saving us from demons and a long and painful death.

Borne to a new world, lush and bright,
Untouched by war or endless fright,
L'Naere-mother gave us life and love and hope and breath.

We praised her for her kindness then,
 We pray for guidance now.
We swear we'll do it all ourselves -
If she'll just show us how.

But demons came and made us thralls,
Burnt our cities, broke our walls,
Gave us wings to fly and eyes to see just how they wished.

And all their voices in our heads,
Filling us with shame and dread,
Making us to dig and offer up all L'Naere's Gifts.

We prayed for her salvation then,
 We beg for rescue now.
Some swear we'll have to save ourselves,
If she won't show us how.

 L'Naere-mother, do you cry?
 Are you watching Bre'Naere die?
Do your tears merge with the dust that circles on the wind?

 L'Naere-mother, do you care?
Or are you even really there?
Or is this some great punishment for those who never sinned?

We begged an end to silence then,
 We wait in silence now.
What if we cannot save ourselves,
And you won't show us how?

Then through a portal came the scent
Of growth and water, so we went,
But though we did not know it then, the demon horde was near.

With elves and humans by our side,
We battled back the demon tide,
 The portal closed...
   ...our foemen died...
...at last, our way was clear.

We prayed and begged and waited then,
 Some are still waiting now.
We were alone, we saved ourselves,
No one would show us how.

We lived in fear and danger, then,
 We live in laughter now.
But did we really save ourselves,
Or did she show us how?

 L'Naere-mother brought us here,
Guarding us from harm and fear,
Saving us from demons and a long and painful death.

Borne to a green world, lush and bright,
Untouched by ruin, scourge or blight,
L'Naere-mother gave us life and love and hope and breath.

Ill Wind

Written and performed for the Bardfest finals in Koaratos 5105.
Awarded 'Best New Voice'.
The earth harbors treasures she holds deep within,
But sometimes her lifeblood lies close to her skin.
In places, her riches erupt from the ground,
And, ripe for the taking, by villains are found.

Into those mountains, they send forth the clans,
The Vaer'sah their eyes and the Gaeh'deh their hands.
The Mrae'ni protect them from cave-ins and flows,
But from the caldera, a poisoned wind blows --

A hot wind to carry their bodies away
An ill wind that reeks of despair and decay
 Blood turns to water
 And water to ash
On the wind, at the end of the day.

The earth guards her riches with jealous desire -
Such theft of her bounty awakens her ire.
The earth, once provider, now shaking and crazed,
Cares naught for those caught in the wake of her rage.

Her rumblings of anger catch them unaware:
In triads and pairings, they take to the air.
Those trapped in the tunnels fall first to the gales
Of fiery death the volcano exhales --

A hot wind to carry their bodies away
An ill wind that reeks of despair and decay
 Blood turns to water
 And water to ash
On the wind, at the end of the day.

The mountain is still now, the earth satisfied,
Believing her tormentors all fled or died.
But what is it worth when it won't stop the pain?
Her own misused children were murdered in vain.

Her respite is brief, many more will descend,
And hasten their mother along to her end.
No quarter is offered, no freedom but death,
Yet solemn, they harken to her final breath --

A hot wind to carry their bodies away
An ill wind that reeks of despair and decay
 Blood turns to water
 And water to ash
On the wind, at the end of the day.

Remembrance

Written 30 Ivastaen 5110, not yet publicly performed.
A remembrance for those left behind.
A haunted breeze bears bitterest memory,
The cries of kin from lost Bre'Naere.
Listen close, and still you can hear them,
Struggling to keep the demons at bay.

Sing for those whose hearts are still weeping,
Laud the lives lost in the fray.
Close your eyes, and still you can see them,
Fighting to keep the demons at bay.

Our battles here, though deadly, are different.
But hope is a weapon we won't throw away.
Stronger now, to each other we whisper,
We, too, can keep the demons at bay.

 Remember fondly, brothers and sisters,
Those long passed through the final gateway,
Hold them close, their memories are with us,
Helping to keep the demons at bay.
