You must be holding the kaleidoscope, or have it PLACEd at Tier 3, to use the verbs. Messaging uses the item's custom settings, shown in italics below. The examples use a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope with a ''polished resaeun stand'', a material of ''smooth'', ''copper'' gears, and ''copper'' wheels. |

~*~ Kaleidoscopes ~*~ |
Originally created by GMs Kuromaku and Raene in 1999, these kaleidoscopes were updated by GM Xynwen in 2024 to be re-released at Ebon Gate. There are currently 3 tiers. This kaleidoscope is Tier 3. |
PLACE sets the kaleidoscope down on its stand for up to 4 hours, and only you can pick it up during that time. Repeat PLACE to pick it back up. In your own [[private property]], a PLACEd kaleidoscope is not swept up by the janitor. The owner of the property can then PUSH it twice within 30 seconds to make it a permanent prop. This cannot be undone, and the kaleidoscope can no longer be picked up or PLACEd. |
Usage: TURN will randomly select 4 phrase groups. PEER shows them. Custom phrase sets still are selected randomly, but at Tier 3, you can TWIST to select the entire phrase set for your PEER. |
{{VerbTableStart |header1= Verb |header2= Condition |header3= }} |
! scope="rowgroup" role="rowheader" rowspan=3 | EAT || Held |
Placement Usage: At T3, PLACE to set it down for up to 4 hours. Only the person PLACEing can pick it back up during that time. If you forget, after four hours, it will be able to be picked up by anyone, including the janitor. If the janitor gets it, you can check in at the Adventurer's Guild for LOST items. Pick it up by repeating PLACE <item>. |
| Holding your brass kaleidoscope up to your mouth, you work your tongue into one of the ''copper'' wheels and twist it. It works, and you hear the gears inside shift around. || Holding her brass kaleidoscope up to her mouth, Xynwen works her tongue into one of the ''copper'' wheels and twists it. It works, and you hear the gears inside shift around. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. |
|- |
Private Property Usage: If you own a private property, you can PLACE the kaleidoscope, and it will not be swept up by the janitor. It will stay there until you pick it up with PLACE <item>. |
! Placed |
| Glancing at the kaleidoscope, you lean over and work your tongue into one of the ''copper'' wheels and awkwardly twist it. A few gears inside whir, and you feel something shift. You lean back. Success! || Glancing at the kaleidoscope, Xynwen leans over and works her tongue into one of the ''copper'' wheels and manages to awkwardly twist it. A few gears inside whir as she leans back. Peculiar. |
PERMANENT PP Usage: After PLACEing the kaleidoscope in your private property, you can PUSH it and make it a permanent prop in the room. If you do this, it cannot be undone. You can no longer PLACE it or GET it. |
|- |
! Placed, hidden |
Verbs: |
| Same as placed. || The ''copper'' wheels of a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope turn without visible assistance, and you hear a few clicks from inside. |
* Tier 1: fidget, peer, turn |
* Tier 2: lick, rub, shake |
* Tier 3: eat, poke, place, twist |
Alterations: |
* Any merchant can alter if desired. Unlocks are with permission only. It takes a base, long, and/or show. There is a stock LOOK, and it will append to any custom SHOW. Keep this in mind when altering. |
-- when PLACEd, this stock look will also reference the stand |
* This should remain a kaleidoscope item (so a tube, cylinder, kaleidoscope, or other appropriate noun) |
* There are references to tiny wheels near the eyepiece and gears/clockwork items on and in it |
Custom Fields: |
* These 4 fields are separate from an alteration. If the alter contradicts what is here, these will be updated to fit. Merchants can do all 4 fields as 1 service |
* Stand (used for PLACE at T3): no article, include noun. Ex. silver-inlaid ebonwood holder or cedar stand |
* Kaleidoscope main material/descriptor: How you want the main body of the kaleidoscope referenced in applicable messaging. Ex. gem-encrusted or silver-inlaid copper or smooth |
* Gears: adjectives used in front of "gears." Ex. copper or etched brass |
* Wheels: Same as gears but for the tiny wheels |
Custom Phrase Sets |
* At Tier 2, you can set 2 custom phrase sets. Tier 3 adds 3 more. You cannot alter these fields unless the kaleidoscope is unlocked to the proper tier. |
* Adding one custom set of phrases can be done at GALD, but it is a service in and of itself and shouldn't be combined with alterations. |
Phrase Sets Setup: |
* The phrase set layout is "phrase 1^phrase2^phrase 3^phrase4" |
* Phrase 1 should be a type of pattern, like "a swirl of rose-hued leaves" |
* Phrase 2 will connect 2 patterns together, like "overlaid by" |
* Phrase 3 will be another pattern, like "dozens of miniscule red crystals" |
* Phrase 4 connects it all together (often a background), like "upon a shimmering silver background" |
* It all ties together thusly: You peer through your kaleidoscope and see a swirl of rose-hued leaves overlaid by dozens of miniscule red crystals upon a shimmering silver background. |
* Each section is randomly chosen when TURNing and saved in sdata10 for PEERing |
* At Tier 3, you can TWIST to put a custom phrase set in sdata10 in its entirety |
Current Settings: |
* Stand: polished resaeun stand |

The kaleidoscope Toy is a fluff script that applies to miscellaneous items. It was originally released by Kuromaku in 1999. The following facets are able to be customized by a merchant: stand, material, gears, wheels and view phrase sets. Items with this script can be PUT on the ground for a limited duration, during which other players and the janitor cannot pick them up. Updated in 2024 for Ebon Gate by GM Xynwen. At Tier 3, it can be PLACEd and, in a private property, made a permanent prop with PUSH.
Analyze
~*~ Kaleidoscopes ~*~ Originally created by GMs Kuromaku and Raene in 1999, these kaleidoscopes were updated by GM Xynwen in 2024 to be re-released at Ebon Gate. There are currently 3 tiers. This kaleidoscope is Tier 3. Usage: TURN will randomly select 4 phrase groups. PEER shows them. Custom phrase sets still are selected randomly, but at Tier 3, you can TWIST to select the entire phrase set for your PEER. Private Property Usage: If you own a private property, you can PLACE the kaleidoscope, and it will not be swept up by the janitor. It will stay there until you pick it up with PLACE <item>. PERMANENT PP Usage: After PLACEing the kaleidoscope in your private property, you can PUSH it and make it a permanent prop in the room. If you do this, it cannot be undone. You can no longer PLACE it or GET it. Verbs: * Tier 1: fidget, peer, turn * Tier 2: lick, rub, shake * Tier 3: eat, poke, place, twist Alterations: * Any merchant can alter if desired. Unlocks are with permission only. It takes a base, long, and/or show. There is a stock LOOK, and it will append to any custom SHOW. Keep this in mind when altering. -- when PLACEd, this stock look will also reference the stand * This should remain a kaleidoscope item (so a tube, cylinder, kaleidoscope, or other appropriate noun) * There are references to tiny wheels near the eyepiece and gears/clockwork items on and in it Custom Fields: * These 4 fields are separate from an alteration. If the alter contradicts what is here, these will be updated to fit. Merchants can do all 4 fields as 1 service * Stand (used for PLACE at T3): no article, include noun. Ex. silver-inlaid ebonwood holder or cedar stand * Kaleidoscope main material/descriptor: How you want the main body of the kaleidoscope referenced in applicable messaging. Ex. gem-encrusted or silver-inlaid copper or smooth * Gears: adjectives used in front of "gears." Ex. copper or etched brass * Wheels: Same as gears but for the tiny wheels Custom Phrase Sets * At Tier 2, you can set 2 custom phrase sets. Tier 3 adds 3 more. You cannot alter these fields unless the kaleidoscope is unlocked to the proper tier. * Adding one custom set of phrases can be done at GALD, but it is a service in and of itself and shouldn't be combined with alterations. Phrase Sets Setup: * The phrase set layout is "phrase 1^phrase2^phrase 3^phrase4" * Phrase 1 should be a type of pattern, like "a swirl of rose-hued leaves" * Phrase 2 will connect 2 patterns together, like "overlaid by" * Phrase 3 will be another pattern, like "dozens of minuscule red crystals" * Phrase 4 connects it all together (often a background), like "upon a shimmering silver background" * It all ties together thusly: You peer through your kaleidoscope and see a swirl of rose-hued leaves overlaid by dozens of minuscule red crystals upon a shimmering silver background. * Each section is randomly chosen when TURNing for PEERing * At Tier 3, you can TWIST to set PEER to a custom phrase set in its entirety Current Settings: * Stand: polished resaeun stand * Material: smooth * Gears: copper * Wheels: copper * Current View Phrase: an interlocking array of tiny granite squares^almost obscured by^faetha green hexagons^twisting above a gold-sparked viridian field
Usage Information
You must be holding the kaleidoscope, or have it PLACEd at Tier 3, to use the verbs. Messaging uses the item's custom settings, shown in italics below. The examples use a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope with a polished resaeun stand, a material of smooth, copper gears, and copper wheels.
Tier 1/Off-the-Shelf
TURN randomly chooses a new view made of four phrases, and PEER shows the current view. There is no room messaging for TURN.
| Verb | Condition | First | Third |
| FIDGET | Held | You start to fidget with a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, then suddenly stop yourself just before you realign the copper wheels. | Xynwen starts to fidget with a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, then suddenly stops herself just before realigning the copper wheels. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Placed | Taking great care not to jostle the copper wheels, you fidget with the kaleidoscope's polished resaeun stand, ensuring it adequately supports the kaleidoscope. | Taking great care not to jostle the copper wheels, Xynwen fidgets with the kaleidoscope's polished resaeun stand, ensuring it adequately supports the kaleidoscope. | |
| PEER | Held or placed | Taking care not to disturb the copper wheels, you peer through a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope and see an interlocking array of tiny granite squares almost obscured by faetha green hexagons twisting above a gold-sparked viridian field. | Xynwen peers through a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope. |
| TURN | Held or placed | You fidget with a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, turning a few tiny copper wheels near the eyepiece this way and that. You can hear the faint twisting of gears deep inside the kaleidoscope. | - |
Tier 2
Tier 2 allows 2 custom phrase sets, added by a merchant. SHAKE also chooses a new random view, like TURN.
| Verb | Condition | First | Third |
| LICK | Held or placed | You run your tongue along the smooth surface of the kaleidoscope, tasting nothing but regrets and perhaps the faint hint of other people's fingerprints left over from frequent use. | Xynwen runs her tongue along the smooth surface of the kaleidoscope. Given how popular fidgeting with these devices can be, that just cannot be sanitary. |
|---|---|---|---|
| RUB | Held or placed | Noticing a splotch of dirt or something on one of the copper gears of a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, you spit into your hand, then rub it along the gear, trying to clean it up. The kaleidoscope looks better, but now your hand feels... unclean. | Xynwen inexplicably spits into her hand, then rubs it along the copper gears of a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope. It does look cleaner, but she doesn't seem to know what to do with her hand now. You make a mental note to think twice before shaking Xynwen's hand. |
| SHAKE | Held | You give your brass kaleidoscope a good shake, setting its copper wheels spinning and the innermost clockwork whirring in protest at this violent method of adjusting its settings. | Xynwen gives her brass kaleidoscope a good shake, setting its copper wheels spinning and the innermost clockwork whirring in protest. |
| Placed | You shake the polished resaeun stand of a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope to test its sturdiness. It begins to tremble, setting the copper wheels spinning. As they slow down, you hear the innermost clockwork clicking into place. Oops! Guess it was time for a new look anyway. | Xynwen shakes the polished resaeun stand of a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, causing the entire device to tremble and setting its copper wheels spinning. As they slow, you hear some inner clockwork clicking into place. | |
| Placed, hidden | Same as placed. | A dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope shakes back and forth, setting its copper wheels spinning. As they slow, you hear some inner clockwork clicking into place. |
Tier 3
Tier 3 allows 3 more custom phrase sets, for 5 in total. EAT chooses a new random view, like TURN. TWIST cycles through your custom phrase sets and sets the next one as the PEER view. TWIST only works if at least one custom phrase set has been added.
PLACE sets the kaleidoscope down on its stand for up to 4 hours, and only you can pick it up during that time. Repeat PLACE to pick it back up. In your own private property, a PLACEd kaleidoscope is not swept up by the janitor. The owner of the property can then PUSH it twice within 30 seconds to make it a permanent prop. This cannot be undone, and the kaleidoscope can no longer be picked up or PLACEd.
| Verb | Condition | First | Third |
| EAT | Held | Holding your brass kaleidoscope up to your mouth, you work your tongue into one of the copper wheels and twist it. It works, and you hear the gears inside shift around. | Holding her brass kaleidoscope up to her mouth, Xynwen works her tongue into one of the copper wheels and twists it. It works, and you hear the gears inside shift around. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Placed | Glancing at the kaleidoscope, you lean over and work your tongue into one of the copper wheels and awkwardly twist it. A few gears inside whir, and you feel something shift. You lean back. Success! | Glancing at the kaleidoscope, Xynwen leans over and works her tongue into one of the copper wheels and manages to awkwardly twist it. A few gears inside whir as she leans back. Peculiar. | |
| Placed, hidden | Same as placed. | The copper wheels of a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope turn without visible assistance, and you hear a few clicks from inside. | |
| POKE | Held or placed | You idly poke at the copper gears on a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, being careful not to adjust its settings. | Xynwen idly pokes at the copper gears on a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope. |
| TWIST | Custom phrase set saved | You twist a few copper gears on a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, fidgeting with it until everything lines up just so. [You have set the kaleidoscope to display a custom phrase when PEERing. To randomize again, you can TURN.] |
- |
| PLACE | Setting down | As you set a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope down, you depress one of its copper gears. With a clockwork whirring, an opening appears near the aperture as the kaleidoscope's polished resaeun stand slides out and clicks into place. | As Xynwen sets a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope down, she depresses one of its copper gears. With a clockwork whirring, an opening appears near the aperture as the kaleidoscope's polished resaeun stand slides out and clicks into place. |
| Picking up | You pick up a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, pushing one of its copper gears. With a clockwork whirring, the polished resaeun stand folds in on itself and slides into its hiding place within the kaleidoscope. | Xynwen picks up a dragon-etched brass kaleidoscope, pushing one of its copper gears. With a clockwork whirring, the polished resaeun stand folds in on itself and slides into its hiding place within the kaleidoscope. | |
| PUSH | First PUSH | PUSHing your brass kaleidoscope will PERMANENTLY place it in this room. You will no longer be able to pick it up. It becomes a permanent prop. The verb traps will still work. PUSH again to permanently place your item. [PUSH kaleidoscope again within 30 seconds to make it a permanent fixture in this room] |
- |
| Second PUSH | You give your brass kaleidoscope a push, permanently affixing it to its spot. You will now no longer be able to pick it up or PLACE it. | - |
