The adventurer known as Starsworn was born as Kaydrin Wintervale in the year 4,867 to a Sylvan mother and a Human father. The union itself was unremarkable by the standards of both peoples, but the child was not: he exhibited true chimerism, with one side of his body developing along clean Sylvan lines, and the other wholly human. Each ancestry saw only the other's half, and the child was carried into the wilds and left exposed and unnamed.
The Elanthian adventurer called Starsworn was born Kaydrin Wintervale in the year 4,867 to a Sylvan mother and a Human father. From his inception, his body was as divided as his heart: he exhibited true chimerism, with one side of his body appearing classically Sylvan, and the other half human. Each ancestry saw only the other's half, and he was left in the woods to die.

He survived long enough to be found by a scout from a Vornavian border settlement. He was kept as a matter of practicality rather than good will, and raised without sentiment to make himself useful to them. His predilection for magic emerged in adolescence, uneven and instinctive. In time, he left the settlement and made his way south, making good use of the various skills he was taught through childhood.

Later records place him in the Landing environs, where he entered service at the Temple of Love casting defensive spells to protect the temple's acolytes. There he met a mage of the faith who would become his wife. Through her love, he refined and expanded his spellcraft until his talent became formidable.

His wife was lost along with the acolytes, her body corrupted into a nedum vereri and her spirit severed, torn loose to wander Elanthia, left unmoored without burial rites. After the Temple’s fall, Kaydrin abandoned his given name and took the moniker 'Starsworn'. This was a vow as much as a title, describing his commitment to wander beneath the open sky until he could reunite his wife’s spirit with her body and grant her the burial she was denied. In pursuit of that goal, he has aligned himself with Zelia, Arkati of the moon and madness, seeking clarity within the hopelessness of his mission.

Lore

[An Ancient Library]
You find yourself surrounded by a library of age beyond compare. its towering shelves are packed with dust-choked tomes and crumbling scrolls. The air smells of old paper and candle wax, and shadows cling to the narrow aisles between the shelves. You also see a worn lor table with a lit candle votive, a mourning token of raven black hair, and a jeweled periapt on it.

>look periapt

This faceted cabochon of black jewel is clutched by a desiccated hand of carved lor with verdigris claws, its fine details depicting the stage of rigor mortis. Finely etched inscriptions engulf the facets of the night-dark gemstone, the alchemical designs traced in a faint wash of metallic ink.

>get periapt

You pick up the jeweled periapt.

>wear periapt

As you don your periapt, a wave of dreadful cold rushes through your very bones. A sense of utter emptiness overtakes you, extinguishing your spirit like a firefly vanishing in the night. The vast cold rushes out of you as the image of a rotted lich appears beside you, and you feel yourself again.

The lich extends the tome towards you in a silent offer, and you accept.

Kaydrin survived long enough to be found by a Vornavian scout. He was allowed to stay in their border settlement provided he contributed, which he did with verve. His predilection for magic emerged in adolescence as an uneven, instinctive impulse; it would be years before he met his wife, who would help him polish these talents into a useable form. In early adulthood, he left the settlement and made his way south, making good use of the various skills he was taught through childhood.

In the following years, he entered service as a mage at the Temple of Love casting defensive spells to protect its acolytes from the environs' creatures. There he met another mage who would soon become his wife. Through her love, he refined and expanded his spellcraft until his talent became formidable.

Those bright days ended with the corruption of the temple by Lyendra and Ivas. His wife was lost along with the acolytes, her body corrupted into a nedum vereri and her spirit severed. With her body unburied, her spirit attached to Kaydrin, manifested in whispers whenever he casts a spell, or physical form to assist him in combat.

Following this event, Kaydrin abandoned his given name and took the moniker 'Starsworn'. This was a vow as much as a name, referring to his commitment to wander beneath the open sky until he could reunite his wife’s spirit with her body, granting her the burial she was denied. In pursuit of this goal, he has aligned himself with Zelia, Arkati of the moon and madness, seeking clarity within the hopelessness of his mission.

>remove periapt

As you doff your periapt, a hollow moan echoes in your mind like the creak of some timeless glacier. A wave of dreadful cold claws its way into your bones, then rushes away. For a moment after, the periapt feels cold to the touch. The tome, and the lich, are gone.
