The APPRAISE verb has many uses which may aid those who inhabit Elanthia. Appraising gems and skins may reveal their quality and/or value when held in the right hand. 25 ranks in Trading is required to receive detailed messaging. Rangers receive 1/4 their level in free Trading ranks when appraising skins.
In town shops and at Merchant shops, APPRAISE will tell how much an item costs.

Usage

Player

APPRAISE (player) may be used by any profession to determine injuries on another character. When used in the Wrayth frontend, empaths are able to utilize the window that pops up to click on the wounds and TRANSFER the wounds onto themselves.

Clerics and paladins can determine another character's spirit level. In the case of corpses, they can also determine whether the corpse has been preserved, whether a cleric has linked to it with Well of Life, whether a chrism has been applied to it, and whether they have Symbol of Restoration active.

Messaging - Regular
You take a quick appraisal of <character> and find that she has no apparent injuries.
Messaging - Cleric or Paladin
  • Living target
You glance at <character> and immediately realize she has 10 spirit levels out of a maximum of 10.
You also notice that she has no apparent injuries.
  • Corpse

Creature

APPRAISE (creature) offers messaging in regarding creatures and their relative size and height, as well as whether or not it would be worthwhile to engage in battle with them. This is functionally similar to ASSESS.

The executioner should be easy, yet could still give you a bit of a scuffle.

You think you'd have a slight advantage over the defender.

The radical would be a pretty even match for you.

Object

APPRAISE (object) may have varying messaging based on the item type, trading ranks, or whether you are in a town shop appraising an item to sell it.

Messaging - Gems
  • Less than 25 ranks of Trading
You peer intently at the clear tourmaline as you turn it in your fingers, meticulously inspecting for flaws.  As best you can tell, the clear tourmaline is of average quality.
  • With 25+ ranks of Trading
You peer intently at the uncut diamond as you turn it in your fingers, meticulously inspecting for flaws.  You estimate that the uncut diamond is of fair quality and worth approximately 6000 silvers.
  • Gemshop
You ask Tanzania to appraise a tiny grey pearl.
The jeweler Tanzania takes the grey pearl and inspects it carefully before saying, "I'll give you 2,310 silvers for it if you want to sell."
Messaging - Skins
  • Less than 25 ranks of Trading
You turn the cyclops eye over in your hands, meticulously inspecting for flaws.  As best you can tell, the eye is in decent shape.
  • With 25+ ranks of Trading
You turn the griffin pelt over in your hands, meticulously inspecting for flaws.  You estimate that the griffin pelt is of magnificent quality and worth approximately 450 silvers!
  • Furrier
You ask Gaedrein to appraise a pair of forked antlers.
Gaedrein examines the forked antlers quickly and says, "I'd say it's worth about oh... I'll pay you 205 silvers for it."
Messaging - Holy Symbol (Cleric or Paladin Only)

Clerics and paladins may APPRAISE a symbol to determine if it is a valid holy symbol and for which deity.

Utilizing your familiarity with the divine, you sense the distinct presence of Marlu's influence within the talisman.
Messaging - Pawnshop

When appraising at the pawnshop, the pawnbroker will give variable messaging based on the item being appraised.

You ask the pawnbroker to appraise (item).
The pawnbroker turns the pearl over in his hands a few times.
The pawnbroker says, "Hmm, (item-based messaging).  I'll give you 658 silver coins for it."
Messaging - Other

When appraising an item that is not a gem or skin, nor when a gemshop, furrier, or pawnshop, messaging is fairly basic.

It's hard to say.  Best take it to some shop that deals in this sort of thing.

GROUP

APPRAISE GROUP works in the same way as APPRAISE (player, but targets the group, allowing a full view of injuries on all GROUPed members.
