Very interesting. Following up on Oscuro's hint, I dug into my saved posts. It turns out Krakiipedia is wrong on this one. Below is an old post by Saltstone that works precisely for me.

It's not AS*2, but the spell level penalty is only level*5. For the capped player in your example, it's worse than you thought.

None of you should bid on that awful yellow book at the auction. To avoid disappointment for the rest of you, I'm willing to take the hit and buy it at the auction so nobody else will have to be stuck with it. :)

For anyone interested, here is the current new formula for scroll invoking. It's a bit more complex then the last one. Note all stat references refer to the BONUS, not the actual stat.

;Base formula (modifier):

(LO+IN) + (stat modifier) + scroll skill + (alignment bonus) + (knowledge bonus) - (spell level x 5) - (armor/encumbrance) = modifier

If modifier +d100 >100, then scroll is successfully activated

;Stat modifier differs for each spell circle, and all numbers ROUND DOWN

100 - WI
200 = WI/2 (ROUND DOWN)
300 = WI/2 (ROUND DOWN)
400 = AU
500 = AU/2 (ROUND DOWN)
600 = WI
700 =(WI+AU)/4 (ROUND DOWN)
800 = (LO+IN)
900 = AU/2 (ROUND DOWN)
1000 = (LO+IN)
;Alignment bonus is as follows:

+40 if you have access to spell circle
+20 If you don't have access, but circle is within your spiritual/elemental sphere
+0 if the spell is from the opposite sphere
Notes:
1) Warriors and rogues are considered not be aligned with either sphere; they get +40 for both minor circles and +0 for all others
2) Sorcerers are considered aligned with both spheres. They get +40 for circles they have access to and +20 for all other circles

----

;Spell knowledge bonus

+20 if you have learned the spell yourself (even if you're too young to actually cast it)

----

;Armor/encumbrance penalty

I haven't bothered to work out the details of this factor. It's clear that both armor and encumbrance add a penalty, but I don't know how much or if it can be trained away by armor training. Bottom line: take off your armor and stay light if you want to invoke a tough scroll.

Take home message? A halfling sorcerer with maxed LO and IN could invoke just about anything.
I hope this proves useful in planning training. Let me know if your results don't match the above formula (but be sure you're testing it unarmored, uninjured, and unemcumbered, and remember, some headgear, greaves, etc.. count as armor)

>>Unfortunately, for whatever reason, perhaps Oscuro can explain, several of those spells from that list are exempt from scrolls:

>>Call Swarm, Spike Thorn,

These spells have a success formula based almost exclusively on Ranger Spell ranks AFAIK, so their inclusion would be almost useless. I don't see an issue with including them in the treasure system, but that decision is up to the Ranger Team (Mestys, Lusus and Warden).

I'm not sure, personally.

For anyone interested, here is the current new formula for scroll invoking. It's a bit more complex then the last one. Note all stat references refer to the BONUS, not the actual stat.

Base formula (modifier)

(LO+IN) + (stat modifier) + scroll skill + (alignment bonus) + (knowledge bonus) - (spell level x 5) - (armor/encumbrance) = modifier

If modifier +d100 >100, then scroll is successfully activated

Stat modifier differs for each spell circle, and all numbers ROUND DOWN

100 - WI
200 = WI/2 (ROUND DOWN)
300 = WI/2 (ROUND DOWN)
400 = AU
500 = AU/2 (ROUND DOWN)
600 = WI
700 =(WI+AU)/4 (ROUND DOWN)
800 = (LO+IN)
900 = AU/2 (ROUND DOWN)
1000 = (LO+IN)

Alignment bonus is as follows

+40 if you have access to spell circle
+20 If you don't have access, but circle is within your spiritual/elemental sphere
+0 if the spell is from the opposite sphere

Notes:
1) Warriors and rogues are considered not be aligned with either sphere; they get +40 for both minor circles and +0 for all others
2) Sorcerers are considered aligned with both spheres. They get +40 for circles they have access to and +20 for all other circles

Spell knowledge bonus

+20 if you have learned the spell yourself (even if you're too young to actually cast it)
