Custom Familiar Gate
Custom Familiar Gates are a type of advanced spell customization where the appearance as well as opening/closing messaging of the Familiar Gate (930) spell has been changed or is otherwise unique. Pre-written custom familiar gates are available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor. Fully custom familiar gates are a delayed service when the player is writing their own. Custom familiar gates are part of the Player Customization System and are managed via the CUSTOM verb.
Custom familiar gate sets consist of three parts:
- Portal appearance (which can include both a long and show description)
- Portal opening message
- Portal closing message
Examples of custom familiar gates include the following sets from options available at Rumor Woods:
Portal: an elliptical portal framed in fractal frost Look/Show: Elliptical in shape, the portal is surrounded by a narrow band of frost, the fractal ice crystals glinting in the ambient light. Opening: A flurry of snow appears, violently whipping around a rapidly ripped, elliptical portal. The snow crystallizes into a fractal frame of frost. Closing: The icy crystals around the portal melt, the glistening droplets sucked into the portal as it snaps closed. Portal: a black and silver granite archway Look/Show: The mouth of the archway leads into a subterranean tunnel, eventually fading to pitch blackness deeper within. Opening: The ground rumbles and splits as an angular archway of silver and black granite rises up, dirt and dust cascading off of its outline. Closing: The form of the granite archway begins to crumble away, starting at its top. Within moments only a small pile of rubble and dust remains. Portal: an empty void torn out of thin air Look/Show: The void seems to pull at the light around it, causing the tattered edges of reality to wave gently as they were tattered shreds of cloth caught in an invisible breeze. Opening: The air itself rips violently, leaving the jagged edges exposed and flailing at the edges of an empty void. Closing: The tattered edges of reality suddenly stretch back toward one another, mending in the blink of an eye. A moment later, the empty void has vanished. Portal: a twisted bright yellow squash blossom Look/Show: Frilled at its tip, the bright yellow squash blossom turns verdant green where it connects to a verdant green vine that anchors it to the ground. Mist and darkness swirl within its depths. Opening: Starting as a tendril of greenery, ethereal energy snakes out of the ground and rapidly grows into twisting squash vines. Pale at first, a bright yellow blossom unfurls, creating a gaping portal. Closing: Twisting closed, the bright yellow blossom curls into itself and then slowly withers, dispersing the green-tinged energy of its creation into the environs.
