Warning: This page concerns archaic world setting information from the I.C.E. Age of GemStone III. It is not canon in contemporary GemStone IV, nor is it canonical for Shadow World as the details may be specific to GemStone III. It is only historical context for certain very old parts of the game and these things should not be mixed.

Karilon is a hidden isle in the Lonely Sea, southwest of the I.C.E. Age continent of Emer (Modern: Finnia). It is the headquarters of the Loremasters in the Shadow World timeline, and home of the only library surpassing that of Nomikos (Modern: Library of Biblia). While it is not larger than Nomikos in the sheer number of volumes, its focus is deeper, and so the world's greatest center of knowledge. The College of Karilon is where the Loremasters train their initiates, whereas modernly (though arguably somewhat archaic itself) "Sages" of the Order of Lorekeepers use the Great University of Nantu.

Karilon was the location where Bandur Etrevion was recognized for his work regarding the surviving followers of Empress Kadaena. The isle is very guarded from the threat of outside assaults, with its precise location unknown and some magic involved in sailing to it. Karilon does not exist in the modern history, and appears on no map of Elanthia. It is only mentioned in archaic texts from GemStone III.

Behind the Scenes

In the modern history of Elanthia the Loremasters refer instead to the Illistim scholars who work instead from Library Aies. "Sages" were the original modernization of the Loremaster concept. However, the game lore has since evolved so that the Order of Lorekeepers existed in the Elven Empire of antiquity, but they were probably related instead to the Chronicle keepers who helped found Ta'Illistim.
