Amethyst is a purple veriety of quartz, comprised of Silicon oxide and possibly manganese. Amethyst exposed to extreme heat turns yellow, becomming yellow quartz. The term "Amethyst" comes from a greek phrase meaning, "Not intoxicated," a reference to the belief that the stone could prevent intoxication.[1] Originally, Amethyst was considered one of the cardinal gemstones along with diamond, sapphire, ruby, and emerald, however, the discovery of large deposits of amethyst has greatly lowered its value.

The world of Elanthia attaches the amethyst to the Arkati, Cholen, who reigns over wine and merrymaking. It is still regarded as a ward against drunkeness as a result. The amethyst is a signature jewel of the Elven house of Loenthra.[2]

a brilliant wyrm's-tooth amethyst

Description:   Shades of lilac, violet, and indigo flow seamlessly together within the sleekly sharpened amethyst. Jagged edges taper to a point, each laced with flecks of ebony trapped within the precious purple gemstone. A pale lavender light coruscates across the lustrous surface like bolts of lightning in the midst of a summer storm.
