Duplicate will create an exact duplicate of a magical item held in the caster's right hand and put it into the caster's left hand. Items must be fresh magical item found within the treasure system. The original (and duplicate) are then immune to further duplication, but otherwise identical to each other.

The most common use for this spell is with blue crystals, ruby amulets, and most types of wands. There are other duplicatable items, but they are rather rare.

Black crystals, white crystals, and solid moonstone cubes cannot be duplicated.

The proper use of the spell involves holding the item the caster wishes to duplicate in the right hand, with an empty left hand, and then casting the spell at the item. Casting Elemental Detection (405) at the item first is often a good idea. If the item has been previously duplicated, casting 405 will activate messaging that indicates the item is no longer suitable for duplication. It is strongly recommended when casting the Duplicate spell that you use the following syntax: cast MY <item name>. There is small chance for catastrophic failure which will cause the item to be completely destroyed.

You gesture at a twisted wand.
A bright aura suddenly surrounds the wand and seems to consume it!  After a moment, the glow intensifies and grows.  Suddenly, the wand becomes transparent, and you are able to watch the process.  Every part, every line, every curve splits into two, and slowly separates.  As the outlines become more pronounced, you reach up with your left hand and grab the copy, pulling it away from the original.  The glow fades from both objects and they solidify, looking almost identical to the original, and feeling a little lighter.

Catastrophic Failure
You gesture at a silver wand.
A bright aura suddenly surrounds the wand and seems to consume it!  After a moment, the glow intensifies and grows.
Suddenly, the wand becomes transparent, and you are able to watch the process.  Every part, every line, every curve splits into two, and slowly separates.  As the outlines become more pronounced, you notice a small flaw develop in the inner fabric of the wand.  The flaw grows rapidly, and seems to be sucking the surrounding material into it.  With a bright flash, the wand disappears into a puff of smoke.
