Knitting Bowl

The Knitting Bowl (also called a Yarn Bowl) is part of the knitting system. It can store knitting yarn inside of it, similar to other "in-ators". Identical yarn will be bundled together. Unlike with hand-bundled skeins of yarn which have a bundle limit of 100 rows, yarn stored inside a bowl can reach a bundled size of 200 rows.

A pincushion can be placed inside the bowl to store it and any Darning Awls contained within. Pincushions are stored as a second item for the purposes of lockering, unlike the yarn and needles. Tier 2 Knitting Bowls can also store a pair of knitting needles inside. Needles can only be stored inside if there is enough room. A bowl that is nearly full of different types of yarn may not have enough space for the needles.

At Tier 3, unscripted clothing and bolts of fabric can be placed inside a Knitting Bowl to craft custom yarn, provided that the fabric type is among those on the acceptable materials list.

Knitting Bowls were first released in 2022 at Rumor Woods and sold in the Purls of Wisdom shop alongside other knitting supplies.

Tier 1

At Tier 1, the Knitting Bowl can store up to 24 skeins of yarn.

A curl-edged knitting bowl resembling fused lotus blossoms is 1 out of 3 Tiers.

Alterations: It must remain some kind of bowl, but can have a vessel-like noun. It should be made of a reasonable material and remain lightweight. As it will have painted lines within it when you add yarn, you may wish it to be a lighter color on the inside.

Tier 3

A Tier 3 Knitting Bowl can make yarn out of fabric inserted into it. It can also provide additional descriptors for the yarn produced, which it refers to as "pronouns" in the analyze. Default yarn customizations that come with this tier include: coarse, frayed, fuzzy, gradient, knotted, lightweight, lustrous, shiny, soft, thick, thin, and winterweight. The Knitting Bowl may store up to eight more yarn custom descriptors beyond that list. WHISPER is expanded to allow easy changes between yarn descriptor options.

For a detailed explanation on how descriptors impact yarn and knitting projects, see Choosing Your Yarn on the main knitting system article.

Additional Information

Yarn Descriptors

A Tier 3 bowl can add a descriptor to yarn when it is removed from it. The bowl calls these descriptors "pronouns", even though they really aren't pronouns. If the yarn had a different descriptor prior to removing it, the new descriptor will overwrite the old one. It is impossible to revert the yarn back to its old descriptor unless it is an option available on the bowl (or you get it altered). There are 12 preset descriptors. An additional 8 custom descriptors can be added by a merchant. READ lists the descriptors available.

You flip over the bowl and notice a list of options:

             ~*~ Yarn Pronoun Options ~*~
     / 1. coarse 2. frayed 3. fuzzy \
    / 4. gradient 5. knotted 6. lightweight \
   / 7. lustrous 8. shiny 9. soft 10. thick \
  / 11. thin 12. winterweight \
 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
  \ ~*~ Your Customs ~*~ /
   \ 13. none 14. none 15. none
    \ 16. none 17. none 18. none
     \ 19. none 20. none
      ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
You can either NUDGE the bowl to cycle through the options, or WHISPER the PRONOUN # to the bowl to set the pronoun of your choice.

Using WHISPER BOWL NONE will clear the currently set descriptor. When "none" is set, the yarn pulled out of the bowl will not have its current descriptor changed. In addition, if it currently does not have one set, no new descriptor will be added.

Once any descriptor has been added to a skein of yarn, it cannot be removed via the yarn bowl.

Using GLANCE BOWL will preview how the currently selected yarn will be removed from the bowl. If a descriptor has been set, it will be included with the preview.

For a detailed explanation on how descriptors impact yarn and knitting projects, see Choosing Your Yarn on the main knitting system article.

Making Yarn

A Tier 3 bowl can craft knitting yarn from unscripted fabric or clothing items placed inside. The cloth items must be from the acceptable materials, which is previewed in the bowl's ANALYZE.

Acceptable materials are: alpaca, angora, aneula, Aldoran wool, bamboo, bresuna, buckram, cameline, captiql, cavelta, chainsil, chenille, cotton, dagswain, fraelhan, flannel, flax, fleece, gossamer, heather, inytela, jute, krinklevelt, lamb's wool, lambilen, linen, maedatha, malghavan wool, merino wool, mohair, moreen, myssamere, oiremere, oxilen, paeline, pashmina, plumille, qiviut, ramie linen, roltalen, rolton wool, ruhani wool, rackhal, sailcloth, flyrsilk, lotus silk, ramie silk, raw silk, sea silk, spidersilk, starsilk, silk, stoutfoot wool, tartan, tweed, vaslavilen, vicuna, vylith, vylithen, wild silk, woolen, wool, wylten, wynelen, yierkale, and yierka wool.

Bolts of cotton, linen, silk, spidersilk, and wool sold at Maellyn's Fabrics work with the bowl to make yarn. Other speciality shops may have bolts of fabric that work similarly. Not all treasure system clothing works with the bowl, even when an acceptable material is part of the clothing's description. Bolts of fabric that are designed for cobbling do not work as they are scripted to work with the cobbling system.

To make yarn, simply FEED BOWL while holding both it and the cloth item. The cloth item is destroyed in the process, and the crafted yarn is placed in the same hand. If a yarn descriptor is set on the bowl, it will be applied to the yarn crafted as part of this process. Bolts of fabric yield yarn skeins capable of knitting 15 rows.
