Talk:Popping boxes
The table seems to be off on the gas cloud trap. I just set one off with the Disarm spell: "Looking closely into the keyhole of the lock, you spy a small vial of liquid and a tiny hammer device which seems poised to shatter it if the lock is tampered with." followed by "Now to isolate the offending mechanism and disable it...Uh oh! You hear what sounds like a vial being shattered from inside the lock mechanism. You jump back from the chest as a cloud of vapors begins to pour from its seams!" INIQUITY (talk) 02:00, 26 March 2015 (CDT)
- You're right. If I'm reading that table correctly, it should be 'sometimes'. I've definitely set off my fair share with 408. DOUG (talk) 02:08, 26 March 2015 (CDT)
- Thank you all for the first discussion on an article that is near and dear to my heart. As far as what the Table says (the most useful part of the entire page, IMO), it IS subjective, but No means No. I'll go ahead and change this right away. Also, I had Kaldonis pick up manual picking skill for about 18+ months, and will soon be dropping it. That means I'll go back to poppin' and lockin', lookin' for a way to justify the Wolfowitz Doctrine (i.e. y'all gonna die!). DAID (talk) 01:01, 3 April 2015 (CDT)
- Edit is done. I opted to keep the background color white, assuming my double-dagger footnote is right. It could be set off but, besides justice status is it dangerous? I think I got lazy at some point, and purposely set off this trap outside town because it was harmless. 408 trigger might differ from 407 though, so putting it in pink may be relevant. More info? DAID (talk) 01:07, 3 April 2015 (CDT)
- I'm not sure. I was arrested before the cloud could do anything, I assumed it would throw a lightning bolt. It's been a long time. INIQUITY (talk) 13:28, 3 April 2015 (CDT)
- Did it like this week, again (on a younger character). I can double check the log, but the cloud dispersed I'm pretty sure. Still arrested of course. So I think the page is right as-is. DAID (talk) 04:36, 24 April 2015 (CDT)
I'm curious where this line comes from >> Very poor attempts or fumbles sometimes result in no messaging at all << There is only one known case where messaging will not occur as far as I know. When a trap is magically disarmed, but the roll indicates that the trap would have been triggered, the box will not vibrate. That line will be skipped. I believe someone registered it in the bug database (but of course, cannot confirm). I can tell you by direct experience, however, that it does happen in those conditions. I've never seen it happen in any other condition, however, with all the boxes I've popped. DOUG (talk) 01:20, 3 April 2015 (CDT)
- I think the no messaging has happened to me on plated boxes and needles. I'll have to do a log search to see, but I pop 30-100 boxes a week, so that should be a fun exercise. VANKRASN39 (talk) 13:45, 3 April 2015 (CDT)
- It comes from my experience. I'll scroll through my logs, but I think I've even gotten it recently. And I've gotten it in the case when I eventually opened the box, and presumably had disarmed the trap. I have a young wizard so I'm curious if I already got it. Should be easy to parse my logs for. I'll check soon. DAID (talk) 04:36, 24 April 2015 (CDT)
- Okee Doug, here you go. From this Monday. My wizard did 44 popping attempts (on just this box!) and I gave up. It was a centaur box, and even Kaldonis took two tries, so it was definitely a tough lock. So far as I know, it had no traps (or if there was, we entirely neglected it 100%). Also, this didn't happen until the 22nd attempt (and only once), so if there was some tough trap that none of us could see, I'd imagine my level 21 wizard would have been toggling it a lot. Lalena says, "Ah, here we are. The client is offering a tip of 256 silvers and mentioned it being from an ash hag (level 31). The coffer is set up on the table for you. When you're finished, ASK me to CHECK your work." [deadpool]>detect Kaldonis coffer You carefully begin to examine Kaldonis's coffer for traps... There appears to be a plate over the lock, sealing it and preventing any access to the tumblers. It looks like an easy trap (-51). You still have a good enough picture of the trap in your mind, that you could try to disarm it. Roundtime: 3 sec. Commotion just went out. [deadpool]>prep 407 A salty sea breeze stirs as you chant an old sailor's ditty, invoking Unlock. Your spell is ready. [deadpool]>cast at Kaldonis coffer You gesture at Kaldonis's coffer. The coffer vibrates slightly but nothing else happens. You feel that you have slightly corroded the lock on Kaldonis's coffer. Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds. Worth noting... but you can also utilize PHASE before using CALL Lightning to detect a Glyph trap prior to taking a 125 rebounded to your face. If it resists a CAST of phase, it's glyphed and can't safely be 125'ed. Absolutely no risk for 125'ing as a Sorc as long as you try to 704 first. HJELTE (talk) 10:03, 1 October 2015 (CDT)
- This is meant to be implicit with the opening section on Glyph traps that notes Phases use here. However, I do not mind to note it in the Call Lightning section again with a link to that section. The article is quite lengthy and making a point more than once for safety is a good suggestion. Thanks! DAID (talk) 19:03, 13 February 2016 (CST)
It looks like the poison needle trap should be "Sometimes" for disarm. Harmless. Trap becomes inert after set off. INIQUITY (talk) 07:27, 3 May 2016 (CDT)
>prep 408 You gesture and invoke the powers of the elements for the Disarm spell... Your spell is ready. >cast my trunk You gesture at a scratched brass trunk. Now to isolate the offending mechanism and disable it...You see a flash of metal pop out of a tiny hole next to the lockplate! The focused look leaves you. Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds. ..Piercing Gaze.. You notice what appears to be a sharp sliver of metal nestled in a hole next to the lock plate. The tip appears to be covered with a reddish paste. Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
I believe that the Sulfur trap is set off by any magic except Piercing Gaze (416), detected or no. But am unsure about Phase (704) as I haven't tested that. I'm also curious - will Call Lightning (125) actually not cause a Sulfur trap to go off? DOUG (talk) 11:37, 20 March 2017 (CDT)
- Are you talking about Phase (make the box weightless) or Phase (stick your hand in a box)? Phase (make the box weightless) will not set off any trap. I never bother with Phase (stick your hand in a box) for normal box activity. Call Lightning works just fine on sulfur traps and I use it regularly to open my boxes. VANKRASN39 (talk) 12:05, 20 March 2017 (CDT)
- Great! One more new thing learned - I'll have to start using Call Lightning for my Sulfur boxes, then! And yeah, phase (lighten). I may be way off base here, but I don't see a lot of use for phase (hand in box) in normal game play. Of course, the sorcerer with a quick Gaze that shows an item of interest (enruned stickpins, anyone) that may want to snag that before going into a locksmith to manage the costs for opening might be one use. DOUG (talk) 13:07, 20 March 2017 (CDT)
Hmm. . . new trap? Nope, wasn't new - removed DOUG (talk) 11:29, 1 June 2018 (CDT)
