When creating a page, in order to ensure disambiguation between characters that share the same name between instances, only the character's <b>first</b> name, followed by the instance in parentheses, should be utilized for the page name. The reason for this is surnames can change, however, the first name will always remain the same.

;Examples
* <nowiki>https://gswiki.play.net/Firstname_(prime)</nowiki>
* <nowiki>https://gswiki.play.net/Firstname_(shattered)</nowiki>
* <nowiki>https://gswiki.play.net/Firstname_(platinum)</nowiki>

To create a new character page, you can copy/paste the above URL with the appropriate instance, replace Firstname with the relevant character's first name (e.g. <nowiki>https://gswiki.play.net/Motte_(prime)</nowiki> and paste it into your browser's URL box. Then, hit enter and click the create tab.

==Non-Account Holder Edits==
;Important Note
Going forward from 12/6/2020, any [[player character]] page created by or edited by users that are not the players of the character in question must have a mention on the character's [[https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Talk_pages Talk (discussion tab)]] page by the account holder that the user who does not own the character has been given consent to create or maintain the page. These permissions must end with the writer using the {{boldmono|<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>}} symbols in order to "sign" the permission.

Character pages should only be added or edited by the account holder or an account which has been noted on the Talk/Discussion tab by the account holder. All changes made by accounts which are not listed on that page are subject to being reverted.

While not necessary, the table to the right is an example of a template that can be used to provide wiki readers a quick, at-a-glance look at the character. Not all information is needed or necessary, as only parameters (i.e., ''class='') filled out will appear in the table.

Some parameters will automatically categorize characters within the wiki.

* Instance (required): This will automatically categorize characters into the selected instance, thus eliminating the need to add the category at the bottom. Correct options are: [[:Category:Prime player characters|Prime]], [[:Category:Platinum player characters|Platinum]], [[:Category:Shattered player characters|Shattered]].
Character pages allow players to have a space on the GSWiki to put information on their characters, with minor formatting guidance. Anything related to their character, including appearance, short biographies/backstories, portraits, creative works, logs, etc. would be able to go here, or be set up as a subpage to the character page.

* Town (optional): This is primarily for prime player characters, but will allow users to select up to two towns they primarily play in, and will also add them to categories based on what is entered. Town names must be written exactly as the category expects. Any more than two towns would need to have the category added to the bottom of the page, otherwise, the template handles the two already. Correct options are: [[:Category:Cysaegir player characters|Cysaegir]], [[:Category:Icemule Trace player characters|Icemule Trace]], [[:Category:Kharam Dzu player characters|Kharam Dzu]], [[:Category:Kraken's Fall player characters|Kraken's Fall]], [[:Category:Mist Harbor player characters|Mist Harbor]], [[:Category:River's Rest player characters|River's Rest]], [[:Category:Solhaven player characters|Solhaven]], [[:Category:Ta'Illistim player characters|Ta'Illistim]], [[:Category:Ta'Vaalor player characters|Ta'Vaalor]], [[:Category:Wehnimer's Landing player characters|Wehnimer's Landing]], and [[:Category:Zul Logoth player characters|Zul Logoth]].

* Race (optional) and culture (optional): These automatically hyperlink the original race and culture articles within the sidebar and automatically categorizes the character page into the appropriate race-related and culture-related categories. There is also an option for secondary culture for individuals with more than one. Correct options for race are: [[:Category:Aelotoi_player_characters|Aelotoi]], [[:Category:Burghal_Gnome_player_characters|Burghal Gnome]], [[:Category:Dark Elf player characters|Dark Elf]], [[:Category:Dwarf player characters|Dwarf]], [[:Category:Elf player characters|Elf]], [[:Category:Forest Gnome player characters|Forest Gnome]], [[:Category:Giantman player characters|Giantman]], [[:Category:Half-elf player characters|Half-elf]], [[:Category:Half-Krolvin player characters|Half-Krolvin]], [[:Category:Halfling player characters|Halfling]], [[:Category:Human player characters|Human]], [[:Category:Sylvankind player characters|Sylvankind]]. Please see each racial link for formatting for culture names. (Do not input the text "player characters" into the field.)
While not necessary, the table to the right is an example of a template that can be used to provide wiki readers a quick, at-a-glance look at the character. Not all information is needed or necessary, as only things filled out will appear in the table. Things that are required are the last entries (see below copy and paste code) which indicate instance and town. This will allow the table to automatically categorize the character in their proper instance, and, in the case of [[Prime]] characters, a town (or two) that is primarily played in.

Character pages allow players to have a space on the GSWiki to put information on their characters which is more freeform than wiki articles that are in the [mainspace] (any article that is off the https://gswiki.play.net/ URL). There are still some minor formatting requirements and guidance, but they are far more relaxed than other areas of the wiki. Anything related to a player's character, including appearance, biographies/backstories, portraits (to which the uploader holds the copyright), creative works, logs, character-specific lists, etc., are able to be posted on character pages or be set up as a subpage.

Article Title

When creating a page, in order to ensure disambiguation between characters that share the same name between instances, only the character's first name, followed by the instance in parentheses, should be utilized for the page name. The reason for this is surnames can change, however, the first name will always remain the same.

Examples
  • https://gswiki.play.net/Firstname_(prime)
  • https://gswiki.play.net/Firstname_(shattered)
  • https://gswiki.play.net/Firstname_(platinum)

To create a new character page, you can copy/paste the above URL with the appropriate instance, replace Firstname with the relevant character's first name (e.g. https://gswiki.play.net/Motte_(prime) and paste it into your browser's URL box. Then, hit enter and click the create tab.

Non-Account Holder Edits

Important Note

Going forward from 12/6/2020, any player character page created by or edited by users that are not the players of the character in question must have a mention on the character's [Talk (discussion tab)] page by the account holder that the user who does not own the character has been given consent to create or maintain the page. These permissions must end with the writer using the ~~~~ symbols in order to "sign" the permission.

Not all information is needed or necessary, as only parameters (i.e., class=) filled out will appear in the table.

Some parameters will automatically categorize characters within the wiki.

  • Instance (required): This will automatically categorize characters into the selected instance, thus eliminating the need to add the category at the bottom. Correct options are: Prime, Platinum, Shattered.
  • Race (optional) and culture (optional): These automatically hyperlink the original race and culture articles within the sidebar and automatically categorizes the character page into the appropriate race-related and culture-related categories. There is also an option for secondary culture for individuals with more than one. Correct options for race are: Aelotoi, Burghal Gnome, Dark Elf, Dwarf, Elf, Forest Gnome, Giantman, Half-elf, Half-Krolvin, Halfling, Human, Sylvankind. Please see each racial link for formatting for culture names. (Do not input the text "player characters" into the field.)

Template Instructions

The character profile template puts a table on the right side of a profile page that will look like this if all parameters are completed. The template code should be put on the page first, followed by any normal text. A good example of the use of this template can be seen here.

Notes:

  • It is not necessary to complete all parameters. Parameters will not show if you do not complete them.
  • Character portraits can be uploaded at the Upload file link under Tools at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  • Text between <!-- and --> will not appear on your profile page (it is commonly used to leave editor notes). It is okay to remove the <!-- and --> and the text in between.

Player Deaths

In the event that the player of a character has passed away, the following steps will be taken to handle the the character page(s) (and associated subpages):

  1. The character page(s) and associated subpages, if any, will be locked to edits by outside parties. This is to preserve them exactly as the player had presented them, thus keeping their own voice for their characters.
  2. A banner template will be added to the top of the character page stating that they are preserved to memorialize the player behind them. This banner template will additionally include a link to a memorial subpage (see #3).
  3. A memorial page subpage may be established for other players to contribute to, with the article title (Character name) (instance)/Memorial which can be accessed through the link in the in memoriam banner template. Additional subpages from this memorial page may be created and linked from the main memorial subpage for larger contributions.
