|mechanics = Garrote can be problematic with heavily armored (neck) opponents, but rarely fails once the garrote is established. Can produce considerable round times, based on a function of your skill ranks and opponent's neck armor. Please note there are creatures (undead, made of stone, no neck, etc.) that garrote will be ineffective against. Also size does matter, smaller races may have difficulty with larger opponents.

Using a strangle rather than a true garrote will increase the attacker's roundtimes slightly. Strangles have a higher damage and repair rate, and a lower major success (death-strangle) rate. Exact stats for each strangle vary from type to type. Strangles will not do neck slash damage on minor successes, but may bruise the target.

Description

Garrote is used to strangle an opponent.

Mechanics

Maneuver a target over four rounds, leading to eventual strangulation. If you are hidden, this skill becomes empowered and is quicker. Upon success, you and your party gain Enhance Agility with a power of 10 for 2 minutes.

Additional Information

Valid items are garrote, wire, rope, belt, beltstrap, cord, lanyard, scarf, strap, and tether. Garrote items are divided into 'true' garrotes (garrote & wire) and 'substitute' garrotes, known as strangles, which includes all other valid item names. Any item with these nouns can be used for this maneuver.

Certain spells such as Cloak of Shadows (712) aid in protecting a victim against a garrote attack and can be damaging to the attacker.

To stop a garrote attack before it completes, use the verb GARROTE STOP or STOP CONCENTRATION.

Creatures that use this maneuver

  • Gremlock (While not exactly the same, training in garrote will protect you from their garrote attack)

Roundtime: 3 sec.

Ending prior to death:

Shadowy ether attempts to rise up from your skin but is unable to free itself from under your armor.

You continue to struggle but the garrote draws inexorably tighter.
You feel a fair amount weaker.
You feel a fair amount less hardy.
You are stunned!
A dark shadowy tendril rises up from your skin, writhes its way up a length of black steel wire studded with shards of glass towards Attacker and lashes out malevolently...

Failure:

[Roll result: 85 (open d100: 88)]
Dhask attempts to slip a rope around your neck, but you nimbly dodge aside.

A gremlock jumps on your back and attempts to drop a garrote over your head. After a brief struggle, you are able to slip out of it with nothing but a few bruises to show for the ordeal.
Roundtime: 3 sec.
