Manipulating the elemental forces within his/her body, the caster forms a layer of hard stone that shifts with his/her movements. This self-cast spell provides additional protection from physical attacks in the form of hitpoint damage absorption.
The total damage that can be absorbed is termed the shatter point. When the absorbed damage reaches this threshold the stone crumbles away ending the spell. Elemental Lore, Earth adds a bonus to the shatter point.
Shatter Point
The shatter point is a measure of the total hitpoint damage absorbed before the stone skin is completely destroyed. The two factors that determine the shatter point are Major Elemental spells (1 point per rank) and Earth lore (1 point per 2 ranks).
Shatter Point Formula
Note: MjE and Earth Lore ranks are NOT capped by level.
Elemental Lore, Earth Benefits
Elemental Lore, Earth increases the amount of damage that the spell can absorb by 1 point per 2 ranks. Earth lore is also a factor in the formula used to determine stone skin 'hardness' messaging.
Hardness Levels
Each time the spell is cast a descriptive message (see list below) indicating a level of hardness is displayed. However, there is no mechanical significance to stone skin's hardness. Damage absorption is based solely on the shatter point. Since the exact formula for the shatter point is known, the below formula which contains a large variable is of very limited usefulness.
- A layer of brittle, shifting stone forms around you.
- A layer thin, shifting stone forms around you.
- A layer of thick, shifting stone forms around you.
- A layer of hard, shifting stone forms around you.
- A layer of very hard, shifting stone forms around you.
Note: The ranges for each level are not known.
Damage Absorption
With each successful attack a random amount of damage is absorbed. The formula for determining this value is not known. However, there is a minimum absorption of 2 hitpoints per attack when possible. There are three exceptions to this 2 pt. minimum.
- When there is only 1 absorption point remaining until the shatter point is reached.
- When the attack resolution results in 2 hitpoints of damage. In this case only 1 point of damage is absorbed (all successful attacks will inflict a minimum of 1 hitpoint).
- When the attack resolution results in 1 hitpoint of damage. When this occurs, even though the spell messaging indicate that 1 pt. of damage is absorbed, there is no actual absorption.
Messaging
Initial Cast:
A layer of thin, shifting stone forms around you.
Wearing Off:
The layer of stone surrounding you crumbles away.
