Cloak of Shadows causes a "shadowy patch of ether" to encompass the caster. It affords a base of +25 to DS and +20 to TD, as well as the ability to empower the cloak with the ability to give retribution to a sorcerer's foes.
Further training in the Sorcerer Base spell circle adds to the benefits of the spell:
- +1 DS per rank > 12 (max. +88 DS benefit, or +113 total DS, at level 100).
- +1 TD per ten ranks > 12 (max. +8 TD benefit, or +28 total TD, at level 100).
- The scaling benefits max at the caster's level.
- Each 3 additional DS generated will cause the spell to cost 1 more mana.
Usage
- PREP 712|CAST or INCANT 712 to cast this spell. Following that, sorcerers should CHANT RETRIBUTION {spell #} to set the retribution spell (see below).
Retributions and Lore Benefit
- To enable the cloak to retaliate, enter CHANT RETRIBUTION {spell #}. Only sorcerers can activate this ability. When the spell is cast from a scroll or magical item by another profession, it will provide base DS and TD benefits only.
- The caster must be stunned or otherwise incapacitated and taking damage from an attack for this effect to have the possibility of being triggered.
- The probability for the cloak to retaliate begins at 70%, and is increased 1% by every 2 Sorcerous Lore, Demonology ranks, up to a maximum of 95% at 50 ranks.
- Should the retribution effect fail, there is an additional 5% chance that it will strike back at its master, causing injury and possible spirit drain.
- If a non-attack spell is chanted, the cloak is guaranteed to strike back at its master, although the severity of said backlash is somewhat less severe (this occurs with 130 and 740). Otherwise, choice of spell has no influence on the outcome.
- The retaliation effect can be disabled using CHANT REMOVE.

[Citadel, Dungeon Landing] Smooth black stone walls run north from a spiral staircase that winds upward and out of sight. Several chairs and tables lie stacked to either side of the hallway, forcing a narrow passage between them. Behind the makeshift barricade, skeletons in timeworn uniforms and rusting armor lie sprawled across the ground in a mess of broken and discarded weapons. You also see a phantasmal bestial swordsman. Obvious exits: north You drop to your knees in utter despair! Overcome by the foul stench of pure evil emanating from the bestial swordsman, your arms fall slack at your sides and feel your limbs slipping away as an utter and complete fear seizes a suffocating control of your mind and body! A phantasmal bestial swordsman swings a black steel twohanded sword at you! AS: +340 vs DS: +325 with AvD: +41 + d100 roll: +92 = +148 ... and hits for 45 points of damage! Blow to head! Look at the pretty stars! A dark shadowy tendril rises up from your skin, writhes its way up a black steel twohanded sword towards a phantasmal bestial swordsman and lashes out malevolently... Your surroundings blur for a moment . . . [River's Rest, Commons Circle] Strolling along this road, bounded on the right by a tall fragrant evergreen hedge, folks seem to be in good spirits. The hurried pace of life to the south is forgotten as the soft sound of gently flowing water filters in from the west. One man in the crowd attracts the eye as he enters the circle from the west, his face drawn and pale, but filled with hope as he leans heavily on the shoulder of his companion. They move on, leaving behind a sense of well-being that is slow to fade. Obvious paths: northeast, southeast, west The shadowy tendrils surrounding you begin to swirl faster and faster until they are just a blurred haze of quickly spiraling darkness. The tendrils drain most of your life force. ... 20 points of damage! Throat nearly crushed. You gurgle as you gasp for air.
It is unclear if additional stun was induced here. However, it resulted in a drain of 8 spirit and neck wound bleeding 10 per round. At least I was back in town?!
