Basilica

The Basilica is a metonym for the government of House Faendryl, which dates back tens of thousands of years. Historically, the "Basilica" is the term used for the building from which the Patriarch rules, which may serve as the residence of the royal family. There have been multiple Basilica buildings throughout history. In the Modern Era the Basilica as a specific building usually means the Patriarch's Palace in the center city of New Ta'Faendryl. It is the core of the Faendryl government. It includes the Patriarch, the Basilican Magistrate, the Arch Chancellors, and various highest-ranking officials or people close to the Patriarch. The Rachis is the whole sector of the Faendryl political economy constituting the bureaucracy supporting the Basilica and law enforcement. The Rachis is the backbone of the Pentact system.

The Patriarch's Palace has Basilican Guards, who in the modern age are only a palatine guard, but are distinct from the Palestra. In the distant past the Palestra were part of the Basilican Guards, and now hold the praetorian guard powers once historically held by the Basilican Guards. The Palestra are also responsible for guarding the Basilica, especially from rogue sorcerers, up to and including the Basilican sorcerers if there were an attempted coup. Most government regulated arcane research takes place in underground levels, which include restricted archives, such as the Enchiridion Valentia archives.
