GemStone4 has several different groups of classes (or professions):

  • Pure spellcasters who rely almost entirely on magic;
  • Semi spellcasters who can divide their attentions between physical arms and magic, and can lean more towards one or the other with fair facility; and
  • Square professions who know essentially nothing about magic, but are very strong with physcial arms.

When GemStoneIII lost access to Iron Crown Enterprises RoleMaster gaming rules, GameMaster Cyper generated a handy little chart to help people understand this concept. This is an excerpt from his post (the entirety of it is some two and a half pages, and addresses several other topics):

Psssst, there is no pure arms user realm anymore. Maybe this little diagram would help.

Full Circles ---------------------- Squares
Wizards        Bards                Fighters
Clerics               Rangers    Theives
Empaths
Sorcerers

Since that time, the profession of Paladin--another Semi--has been added, and they tend to be even more physically inclined than Rangers. A more up-to-date chart may look something like:

Full Circles ---------------------- Squares
Wizards        Bards                Fighters
Clerics               Rangers    Theives
Empaths                     Paladins
Sorcerers
