The official GemStone IV encyclopedia.
A character's inventory is comprised of what a character is wearing as well as the items in the containers worn by the character. A character's inventory can be viewed with the INVENTORY verb.
LOOKing at another character will show what they are wearing and holding. PEERing in a mirror will show how your character looks to others.
Individual items can be concealed by TUCKing them. In addition, a character's entire inventory can be changed by a variety of methods, including a shimmer trinket or the spell Shroud of Deception (1212).

Types of inventory
An extensive list of items and items scripts can be found in the Items category, and in the guide Demystifying Unusual Loot.
Inventory slots and item limits
Characters are limited to how much they can wear based on location. Each wearable location has a limited number of item slots, classified as being functional or non-functional. INSPECT an item to determine its classification. Premium subscribers are granted one extra functional and two total slots for several locations as detailed below.
Characters are limited to a combination of carrying and wearing 500 items. Once this limit is reached a character will not be able to pick another item up using the GET and GATHER verbs. Players who have found ways around the character item limit are at risk for corruption. In the event a character cannot hold anymore, but inventory total numbers are shown as below 500, an item might be present that counts as more than one item.

Inventory slots in detail
The inventory system uses specific slots to hold the character's inventory.
Alongside
The alongside (at feet) inventory slot uses PLACE FEET to put one item you are holding alongside you (at your feet). This frees up your hand while the item remains in your inventory. It does not put the item on the ground in the room, so it cannot be swiped by the janitor. Unlike the AllMine script, other characters cannot see the item when they LOOK at the room, but they can see the item below the character's inventory when they LOOK at the character. INVENTORY will show items in the alongside slot below the list of other items.
While this slot is limited to one item, it can be a container that's usable as if you were wearing it or holding it. Warriors and those casting Call Lightning (125) (at their own peril) may exceed this limit by destroying boxes placed alongside them, as the box contents will also be At Feet instead of spilled onto the ground.
By default, having an item placed alongside you will block you from moving rooms and using BERSERK, though you may DRAG an At Feet item in order to move with it. In addition, all teleportation methods will work, and At Feet items will travel with you.
The alongside slot does not reduce encumbrance or affect the 500-item limit, and it has no impact on disarm mechanics and the RECOVER system.

1. General (Pin)
The general inventory slot is sometimes called the pin-worn slot. Many old items that were made before more recent inventory slots were created are using the general slot. Because of this history, many nouns can be found in the general slot from historical items.
