Unlock is a handy spell that allows the caster to attempt to unlock containers. This spell can also be used to attempt to pop open typical doors. When the spell is successful, the container or door being targeted will pop open. If unsuccessful, the cast of 407 will rot the lock on that locked item, provided the caster has at least one rank in Elemental Lore, Water. The rotting effect lasts 60 seconds and is refreshed and cumulative upon each cast. Each rotting of the lock will subtract from the lock's difficult based on a seed 1 of the Summation Chart for ranks in Elemental Lore, Water, up to a total reduction of 10% of the lock difficulty.
The success of the spell is a percentage which is based on the level of the caster along with the caster's Aura bonus. Also, the level or difficulty of the container is taken into account.
This spell can potentially set off any trap that is on the target object. Typically the trap is not set off on a successful cast. In order to make this spell more effective, the caster can also use the spell Picking Enhancement (403). However, the duration of Picking Enhancement immediately ends after each use of Unlock, regardless of success.
There are also certain materials, such as mithril which are resistant to this spell, as well as any boxes which are enruned.
A small amount of experience, typically around 10 points, is gained for each box successfully Unlocked.
