Illusion Pets are devices that allow the user to apply a "minor" ilusion to specific profession pets: animal companions, animates, demons, familiars, singing swords, and spirit servants. While the bones used to cast the illusion can be altered, the resulting illusion itself cannot be altered or customized. The illusions are also highly specific. For example, an illusion for a wizard cat familiar will only work on cat familiars and not other familiar types.

Illusion Pets bones come in two modes:
{| verbtable <!-- REQUIRED if there are verbs for this tier. For instructions on how to use this template, see Template:Verbtable. -->
* Standard bones replace the pet's appearance entirely with a fixed illusion, ex. a cat familiar becomes a rainbow unicorn kitten with monarch butterfly wings. Most standard bones only work on one specific pet type (see the Valid for line in ANALYZE).
|- 90
* Petrified bones, introduced in 2026, keep the pet's existing appearance and add an adornment phrase after it, ex. a sleek black cat draped in a lattice of petrified bone fragments etched with faintly glowing sigils. Petrified bones work on any pet within their profession pet category.

Additional Information
* The illusion lasts for one hour, or until it is removed with CLEAN.
* Illusions are fragile and end if the pet enters combat.
* The illusion dissolves if the bone leaves the owner's person (dropped, given away, stolen, etc.).
* A bone can only sustain one illusion at a time. CLEAN the bone before casting on a different pet.
* The owner must have only one profession pet type summoned for the bone to work.
* Some illusions require a compatible body type, ex. a flying illusion will not work on a ground-bound pet. Amorphous pets, such as spirit servants, accept any illusion.
* When an illusion ends, the pet returns to exactly how it looked before, description included.
* Offering the bone to someone who declines it does not dissolve the illusion. Handing it over does.
2026 Updates
In 2026, petrified bones were added and all illusion bones received the following fixes and improvements:
* Animated creatures of every type can now take a petrified illusion, including animates that previously reported "not an acceptable profession pet."
* Looking at a pet wearing a petrified illusion now shows the adorned look.
* When an illusion ends, the pet returns to exactly how it looked before, description included.
* Waving a bone that is already sustaining an illusion on another pet now says to CLEAN it first instead of silently tangling the two.
* Offering a bone to someone who declines it no longer dissolves the pet's illusion. Handing it over still does.
* Waving at a pet that already has an illusion now says so, rather than calling it a customized pet.
* Illusion bones cannot be used in areas where magic does not function.
* ANALYZE on a bone now shows its mode and exactly which pets it works on.
Restrictions
* Merchants may alter the bone's 15/15/15, add a LONG, and/or add a SHOW to the bone only. The noun and material must remain "bone."
* Pets should not be altered while wearing an illusion. CLEAN the bone first.
* Cannot be used in areas where magic does not function.
* Does not work on customized pets, such as groomed (altered) animal companions or customized singing swords.
* Illusions cast by this device do not prevent a sorcerer's demon from being recognized as a demon in towns where demons are prohibited. A demon cannot wear both a sorcerer guild illusion and an Illusion Pets illusion at the same time.
* Petrified bones, introduced in 2026, keep the pet's existing appearance and add an adornment phrase after it, ex. a sleek black cat draped in a lattice of petrified bone fragments etched with faintly glowing sigils. Petrified bones work on any pet within their profession pet category, and their adornment phrase can be altered by a merchant.

There is one petrified bone for each pet type:

The Illusion Pets is a fluff creature and glamour script that applies to miscellaneous items. It was originally released at Ebon Gate 2023. Casts a temporary illusion on a profession pet. Standard bones replace the pet's look entirely; petrified bones (2026) adorn the pet's existing look. Designed by GM Ivry and GM Wylloh.

Analyze

Standard bone
You analyze the ecru finger bone and sense that the creator has provided the following information:

                                        Illusion Pets

           XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

               Verbs

WAVE - 1st time use will link the bone permanently.
Afterwards, it can cast a temporary
illusion upon your acceptable "Profession Pets"

Can usually be found in the shop "Fancy Wishbones" during Ebon Gate.

Usage Information

Illusion Pets bones come in two modes:

  • Standard bones replace the pet's appearance entirely with a fixed illusion, ex. a cat familiar becomes a rainbow unicorn kitten with monarch butterfly wings. Most standard bones only work on one specific pet type (see the Valid for line in ANALYZE).
  • Petrified bones, introduced in 2026, keep the pet's existing appearance and add an adornment phrase after it, ex. a sleek black cat draped in a lattice of petrified bone fragments etched with faintly glowing sigils. Petrified bones work on any pet within their profession pet category.

The first WAVE binds the bone permanently to the character. Afterwards, WAVE at the matching profession pet to cast the illusion.

Examples below use a cat familiar (a sleek black cat), an elongated ecru finger bone (standard), and a petrified wizard bone (petrified).

Additional Information

  • The illusion lasts for one hour, or until it is removed with CLEAN.
  • Illusions are fragile and end if the pet enters combat.
  • The illusion dissolves if the bone leaves the owner's person (dropped, given away, stolen, etc.).
  • A bone can only sustain one illusion at a time. CLEAN the bone before casting on a different pet.
  • The owner must have only one profession pet type summoned for the bone to work.
  • Some illusions require a compatible body type, ex. a flying illusion will not work on a ground-bound pet. Amorphous pets, such as spirit servants, accept any illusion.
  • When an illusion ends, the pet returns to exactly how it looked before, description included.
  • Offering the bone to someone who declines it does not dissolve the illusion. Handing it over does.

2026 Updates

In 2026, petrified bones were added and all illusion bones received the following fixes and improvements:[1]

  • Animated creatures of every type can now take a petrified illusion, including animates that previously reported "not an acceptable profession pet."
  • Looking at a pet wearing a petrified illusion now shows the adorned look.
  • When an illusion ends, the pet returns to exactly how it looked before, description included.
  • Waving a bone that is already sustaining an illusion on another pet now says to CLEAN it first instead of silently tangling the two.
  • Offering a bone to someone who declines it no longer dissolves the pet's illusion. Handing it over still does.
  • Waving at a pet that already has an illusion now says so, rather than calling it a customized pet.
  • Illusion bones cannot be used in areas where magic does not function.
  • ANALYZE on a bone now shows its mode and exactly which pets it works on.

Restrictions

  • Merchants may alter the bone's 15/15/15, add a LONG, and/or add a SHOW to the bone only. The noun and material must remain "bone."
  • Pets should not be altered while wearing an illusion. CLEAN the bone first.
  • Cannot be used in areas where magic does not function.
  • Does not work on customized pets, such as groomed (altered) animal companions or customized singing swords.
  • Illusions cast by this device do not prevent a sorcerer's demon from being recognized as a demon in towns where demons are prohibited. A demon cannot wear both a sorcerer guild illusion and an Illusion Pets illusion at the same time.
  • Petrified bones, introduced in 2026, keep the pet's existing appearance and add an adornment phrase after it, ex. a sleek black cat draped in a lattice of petrified bone fragments etched with faintly glowing sigils. Petrified bones work on any pet within their profession pet category, and their adornment phrase can be altered by a merchant.

There is one petrified bone for each pet type:

Bone Works on
a petrified wizard bone Wizard familiars
a petrified spirit bone Spirit servants
a petrified demon bone Minor Summoning demons
a petrified animate bone Animated creatures
a petrified companion bone Ranger companions
a petrified bardic bone Singing swords
