The SWEAR verb allows a character to curse without actually breaking TOS. It somehow isn't masked vulgarity.

Using the SWEAR verb by itself will result in one of the 11 keywords being randomly used. If you have a customized swear it is not included in the possible random swears.

DEAD>swear

Swear Mine (customized swears)

Certain merchants can give you a swear customized to your character. This swear is activated by typing SWEAR MINE.

To see some of the rules, you can see Ozias's Swear mine (saved post) which details the basic rules. To summarize, the format is:

<Your Name> <a verb> <a message>

Your name changes between You/Name/You swear at an object. The swear must start with your name.

The verb comes next. It changes based on what your name looks like. You jump, She jumps, She swears, jumping. It's the same basic verb.

The last part is the messaging. The messaging has to stay the same no matter how you're looking at it. When you write it, make sure that it makes sense with the three combinations of the first two words.

Ozias's original post on SWEAR MINEs included these instructions:

In order to create 1st and 3rd person messages, as well as targetted messages, I'll need a first-person, 3rd person, and present participle of the same verb, and then what I call the "substance of the oath." So: "spit" "spits" "spitting" and "like a dwarf at a halfling pepper tasting" allows for:
You spit like a dwarf at a halfling pepper tasting. Ozias spits like.... You swear at a grey orc, spitting like....
You can also have verbal swears. This one's from Juspera, cleaned up for the kids: "bellow," "bellows," "bellowing," and ""Charl's Beard!"" results in:
You bellow, "Charl's Beard!" Juspera bellows, "Charl's Beard!" and Swearing at a one-eared rabbit, Juspera bellows, "Charl's Beard!"

Using the SWEAR MINE verb when you do not have a customization will result in the messaging. The current targeted format is buggy and does not give the target any messaging.
You ponder, but can't think of anything original to say.
Person pauses, a thoughtful expression on his face.

Examples of SWEAR MINE messaging in the game (these exists in game, so please don't copy them):

  • Vilhra displays a subtle hint of unhappiness, but the emotion quickly passes.
  • You swear at a pretty flower girl, clenching a fist menacingly while taking one slow, deliberate step forward.
  • You begin what promises to be a lengthy and rather bilious tirade before stopping just short of the climax, lips pursed in quiet anger.
  • Hubris chokes off an impolitic comment with a visible effort of will as evidenced by a now-visible angry forehead vein.
  • Pain unleashes a virulent torrent of vulgar invective so foul that it is surprising each word does not burst into flame upon meeting the open air.
  • Baldrick splutters a mostly nonsensical tirade culminating in the phrase "Big fat poopy head!"
  • Blackadder ruminates aloud on the proper terminology for a less-than-halfwit, ultimately deciding it's a tie between "quad-wit" and "eater of paste."
  • You quiver with fist-clenching anger for a moment before letting out a quiet, yet vehement "Foo!"
