Spirit Barrier (102)

|
Spirit Barrier creates a defensive wall of churning air around the target. Physical attacks must move through the air wall, resulting in a base 20 bonus to defensive strength (DS) and unarmed defense factor (UDF), and a base penalty of -20 to melee attack strength (AS) and Unarmed attack factor (UAF). This is a very useful defensive spell for casters of bolt spells or users of wands containing bolt spells since there is no bolt AS penalty.
Further training in the Minor Spiritual circle grants an additional +1 DS/UDF for every 2 ranks above rank 2, with the bonus capped at the caster's level. This also results in a corresponding and equal AS/UAF penalty, and a mana cost increases of +1 per 3 additional DS bonus over the base 20.
Similar to Wall of Force (140), Spirit Barrier also provides a boost to maneuver defense for some creature maneuvers. The spell will protect the user from a maneuver if the maneuver is able to be blocked by a shield. For example, soul golems pushing a character into steam vents can be deflected by a shield, so this spell would give the user protection.
Spirit Barrier can be cast on others subject to a warding roll to force the AS penalty on the target (or provide the DS bonus for, say, an Adventurer's Guild escort task), with duration determined by the warding margin.
When self-cast, a character may end the effect with the STOP verb.
