A Taxidermy Kit can be used to make Taxidermy Specimens and other fun things out of dead animals. By adding creature remnants to the kit, they can form the basis of a specimen or other object, depending on which unlocks the kit has. Unlocks are available a la carte, allowing for a wide variety of options for creations.

Taxidermy Kits debuted at the 2025 Ebon Gate festival and are sold in The Old Ossuary in Evermore Hollow. They were created by GM Avaluka.

OTS Taxidermy Kit

Off the shelf, a taxidermy kit can store creature remnant parts and make basic Taxidermy Specimens from them. Most "animal" creature types can be harvested for creature remnant, but they first must be killed. Gathering creature remnants from a dead creature will destroy its pelt in the process. To gather creature remnants, wear the Taxidermy Kit, hold a knife in one hand, and use DROP/PUT {CREATURE} IN KIT.

Analyze

You analyze the taxidermy kit and sense that the creator has provided the following information:
    --Taxidermy Kit--
  ==General Information==
This taxidermy kit is a special object that stores remnants from huntable creatures. These remains can be made into taxidermy specimens and other items.
It requires acid or blood magic to be able to preserve creature parts; it can gain charges from crystal, bloodwood wands, as well as spells of the appropriate type.
Some creations made with this kit require stuffing, as well, which can be made by DROPping in foraged cotton bolls or scrap pieces of fabric.
  ==Alteration Guidelines==
* Alterations to the taxidermy kit's 15/15/15 and long description are fine, though it must remain a "taxidermy kit". It also cannot take a show.
* The kit is supposed to have an interior made of metal and an exterior made of fabric or leather/suede.
* The material of the interior, the material of the exterior, and the adjective/material for the toggles can be customized by any willing merchant.
  ==Features==
* Creature Remnant Slots [5 out of 25 Unlocked]
  While having a dagger in one hand, DROP a dead creature into your taxidermy kit to store its remains. This requires there to be enough acid/blood magic to preserve the remnants.
  You can GAZE at the kit to see a list of your remnant slots, and TURN the kit to switch to a different remnant slot.
* Taxidermy Specimens [Unlocked]
  These are taxidermied versions of the creature remnant stored. It requires stuffing to create these unless it is a skeleton or skull.
  They can be PLACEd on the ground as a prop or displayed in a private property.
  Sub-Types Unlocked: Full Body, Head.
* Stuffed Puppy Toys [Locked]
  Creates a stuffed version of a puppy toy out of the creature remains. This requires a charge of stuffing to create.
  Sub-Types Unlocked: Creature Remnant Noun.
* Sock Puppet [Locked]
  Creates an OTS version of a Sock Puppet using the creature remnants. The puppet itself is considered to be made of leather, with the skin of the chosen remnant being used to make the puppet's hair.
  Sub-Types Unlocked: Creature Remnant Noun.
* Rugs [Locked]
  Creates a rug made out of the skin of the chosen creature remnant. These rugs can be PLACEd in the room or at-feet; additionally, you can SIT on them.
  Sub-Types Unlocked: <creature remnant noun> <fur/skin/feather> rug, <creature remnant noun> <skin/hide> rug, <pattern> <color> rug.
* Articles [Locked]
  If unlocked, you can change the article of your potential creation with PEDAL.
* Post-Noun (Long) Descriptions [Locked]
  If unlocked, you can change the post-noun (long) description of your creations with TWIST. You can also toggle the post-noun description showing up at all with COVER.
* Adornments [Pelts=Locked, Decoration=Locked, Eyes=Locked]
  If unlocked, you can add gems/metal/wood/glass to use for eyes, pelts/hides for trim, and antlers/horns/teeth/bones for extra decoration.
  These additions will open more options for articles and post-noun descriptions, if available.
* Dye [Locked]
  If unlocked, you can POUR cobbling or alchemy dye into the taxidermy kit and dye your creations.

Your taxidermy kit has access to the following commands:
  DROP/PUT (add remnants/supplies), TURN (change remnant slot), CLEAN (empties currently selected option), FLIP (change creation sub-type if available), PUSH (create object with current settings).
  Additionally you can use INSPECT on the kit to get a wealth of information on how your next creation will appear, as well as GAZE to view the status of all the kit's creature remnant slots.
  ==Current Settings==
* Exterior Material: suede
* Interior Material: steel
* Toggle Adjective/Material: round bone

You get no sense of whether or not the kit may be further lightened.

Creature Remnant Slot Increase

Additional creature remnant slots can be added to a Taxidermy Kit, allowing for storage of more items, up to a maximum total of 25 slots.

Taxidermy Specimen Subtype Unlock

Additional Taxidermy Specimen subtypes can be unlocked via certificate. By default, the Taxidermy Kit can make head and full body subtypes. Additional specimen subtypes may have their own certificates. There are separate certificates for "skeleton or skull" taxidermy specimens and "massive" taxidermy specimens. Massive specimens include wyrms, and this unlock allows for a full size taxidermy specimen to be made from it instead of just the head.

WerePuppy Toy Unlock

This unlock allows for the creation of WerePuppy Toys via a Taxidermy Kit.

Sock Puppet Unlock

This unlock allows for the creation of Sock Puppets via a Taxidermy Kit. Sock Puppets created via a kit are OTS/Tier 1 but can be unlocked individually, like store purchased Sock Puppets.

Creature Noun Unlock

This unlocks the ability to save a creature noun with POINT for optional use with WerePuppy Toys or Sock Puppets made with a Taxidermy Kit.

Adornments Unlock

If unlocked, you can add extra adornments to use for eyes, trim, and extra decoration. These additions will open more options for articles and for post-noun descriptions. Either the article unlock or the post-noun unlock must be applied to the Taxidermy Kit first before any adornment unlocks can be added.

There are separate certificates to add different types of adornment options to a Taxidermy Kit. One certificate adds the ability to include gems/metal/wood/glass as eyes. Another certificate adds the ability to include antlers/horns/teeth/bones as decoration. A third adds the ability to include pelts/hides as decoration.

Usage

PUSH the kit to create the item with the current settings.

Using the Kit

  1. The kit needs to be charged. This can be done via acid or blood magic; it can gain charges from crystal, bloodwood wands, as well as spells of the appropriate type.
  2. Find and kill an animal. Instead of skinning or searching it, wear the kit, hold a knife or dagger in one hand and nothing in the other hand, and then DROP/PUT {CREATURE} IN KIT. This will preview what the creature remnant part will look like, including a color unique to this specific animal. Animals come in a variety of colors, and their remnants reflect those different colors as well as other random adjectives.
  3. Optional: If you are creating a WerePuppy Toy or Sock Puppet and have the creature noun unlock on your Taxidermy Kit, you can use POINT at the dead creature to preserve its noun, which can be used as the noun on the toy or puppet.
  4. Optional: Use INSPECT and the various point and click options to choose which you want applied to your creation.
  5. Use TURN to cycle between creature remnants stored inside of your kit. By default, a kit can store five different creature remnants. Certificates unlock the storage potential for remnants, up to 25 total slots.
  6. Use SPIN to cycle between which type of taxidermy creation you want to make. The default type available is a Taxidermy Specimen. Unlock certificates allow for other options to become available, such as those for a WerePuppy Toy, Sock Puppet, or Rug.
  7. Use FLIP to cycle between different subtypes of the creation previously selected via SPIN. Full body and head are available by default, and they require stuffing to make as a taxidermy specimen. Skulls and skeletons can be added via an unlock certificate, and they do not require stuffing to make as a taxidermy specimen.
  8. Optional: Use PEDAL to cycle between different article options. This requires the Article Unlock. Articles available vary depending on the animal type and may reference the color or other adjectives unique to the stored creature remnant. If the kit has any adornments unlocks applied, those are also included in the available options.
  9. Optional: Use TWIST to cycle between different post-noun (long) description options. This requires the Post Noun Unlock. You can use COVER to remove the post-noun description at any time in the creation process. Descriptions available vary depending on the animal type and may reference the color or other adjectives unique to the stored creature remnant. If the kit has any adornments unlocks applied, those are also included in the available options.
  10. Optional: POUR alchemy or cobbling dye into the kit and use PINCH to apply the dye color to your creation.
  11. If creating a Taxidermy Specimen that is either a head or a full body, DROP/PUT some sort of fabric into the kit to serve as stuffing material. Bolts of fabric purchased at Maellyn's Fabrics in Solhaven work for this purpose.
  12. Use PUSH to complete your creation. This requires confirmation and will destroy all components used in making the creation.
