Thick limestone blocks form a low, square beehouse built for function rather than ornament. The pale stone is weathered by years of sun and salt air, though dark where it remains in the shade. Rows of narrow openings punctuate the walls, each marking the entrance to a clay hive set carefully within the masonry. A simple wooden cover seals the rear of the chambers where the keeper may tend the comb and gather honey. Large yellow and ebon bees move in lazy circuits between the stone beehouse and purple autumn squills, tamarisk flowers, and pink tamarisk flowers flourishing nearby. With gently tapering sides that mimic the layered coils of a woven skep, a cylindrical clay hive sits upright on a stone slab table. Sun-fired clay bears a warm earthen hue, each band catching the light like braided straw formed in pottery rather than fiber. Near the base, a small round entrance allows bees to pass in and out, while within the chamber the comb is formed high beneath the domed interior.
Pollen-dusted yellow Ornath honeybees move in lazy circuits between the clay beehive and amethyst monk's peppers, dragon's blood flowers, and sprig of restharrows flourishing nearby. Lying on its side, a cylindrical clay vessel hive of sun-fired clay displays an earthen surface that is burnished smooth and marked by faint wheel lines left by the potter's hand. One end narrows to a small circular opening where bees pass freely in and out, while the opposite end is sealed with a fitted wooden disk that may be removed to tend the comb within. Pale traces of wax and propolis cling to the rim of the entrance, evidence of steady use. Tropical Ornath honeybees move in lazy circuits between the clay vessel hive and lemon verbenas, green rose succulents, and frilled white rockroses flourishing nearby.

Away from the tall conifers of the surrounding forest, the temperature is comfortable and the air carries the heady scent of ripe fruit. In the middle of a group of thriving saplings is a massive tree, its branches heavy with gleaming red clusters of apples. You also see a large oblong beehive fixed to the trunk of the apple tree.

[Crabapple Grove] (13018051)
The trail suddenly disappears into a maze of crabapple trees. The sharp, sour scent of the tiny fruit fills the air, and the swaying branches make it hard to see very far ahead. You also see a small oblong beehive.

[Mountain Top, Outer Courtyard] (13018065)
A safe distance from the sheer drop of the cliff is a peaceful courtyard enclosed by manicured shrubs and trailing willow trees. In the middle of the haven, spring water burbles out of the ground and flows into a flagstone pool that is filled with sleek blue fish. Opposite the entry gate, a break in the outer ring of shrubs marks the start of a trail that is lined on either side with multicolored wildflowers. You also see an old oblong beehive.

[Collip's Yard] (u2101053)
Although this small yard is just a short distance from the noise and bustle of the Commons Circle, it's remarkably tranquil. The frond-roofed, stucco bungalow is painted a cheery yellow with bright green shutters. Moonlight dappled by the trees plays off a brass sign hanging above the door of the building. In the farthest corner of the yard is a small apiary. You also see a brass-knobbed gate.
