The Artist's Easel was first sold at A Moment in Time in Bloodriven Village during the April, 2017, Duskruin Arena run. Originally sold off the shelf for 1k bloodscrip for a T0 easel or 10k bloodscrip for a T1 easel, an easel allows a character to paint various objects, scenes, or people.

Easel

Different random paintings can be made based on the character's skill level, which increases through continued practice. The random paintings' complexity increases with each skill rank. Item should be on the ground for proper function.

Analyze

You analyze your black wooden easel and sense that the item is largely free from merchant alteration restrictions, but the creator has stated that "The item has restrictions on changing the noun."

The creator has also provided the following information:

This item can be freely altered, but it must remain an "easel". Long descriptions are okay; no shows. It may not be lightened/deepened. Current verbs: ATTEND, CLEAN, CLOSE, COVER, HUG, LICK, NUDGE, OPEN, PONDER, PRAISE, PROD (shows styles), PULL, RUB, and TURN (player and custom). Easels at this tier have unlimited canvas, and painters receive reduced roundtime when painting.

If you are holding a suitable paintbrush, you can PAINT EASEL to paint pictures! As you paint more pictures, your skill will progress, and you will create more elaborate paintings. Your easel must be on the ground in order to paint.

If you progress far enough in your painting skill, and you have an unlocked easel, you can:

Tier 1: paint a portrait of another person using pre-written styles.
Tier 2: design your own custom paintings. (Please note that this tier will be rare.)

HUG the black wooden easel to view the syntax for special Master Painter commands.

This is a Tier 2 version of the easel and it contains an unlimited supply of canvas. Painters will also receive a reduction to RT when painting.
The easel is currently Tier 2. (0

Usage

Verb Skill First Third
ATTEND You swirl your fingertip through the paint on the black wooden easel's palette. Artist swirls her fingertip through the paint on her black wooden easel's palette.
CLEAN Spotting a smudge along the edge of your black wooden easel, you rub at it vigorously with your palm. Artist vigorously rubs her palm on the edge of a lacquered black wooden easel.
CLOSE You unlock a wooden support brace and carefully fold the black wooden easel's three legs to lay flush with the easel's back. Artist unlocks a wooden support brace on her black wooden easel and carefully folds three legs to lay flush with the easel's back.
HUG Displays information on how Master Painters can use different easel options. See additional information below.
NUDGE You pat the sides of your black wooden easel, straightening the canvas resting on the front. Artist pats the sides of her black wooden easel and straightens the canvas resting on its front.
OPEN Anxious to begin painting, you unfold each of the three wooden legs that lay flat against the back of the black wooden easel. For extra support, you lower a bracing bar and lock it into place between the two front legs.

Roundtime: 5 sec.

Artist anxiously unfolds three wooden legs that lay flat against the back of her black wooden easel. For extra support, she lowers a bracing bar and locks it into place between the two front legs.
PONDER You step backwards and fold your arms across your chest, contemplating what you should paint on your black wooden easel. N/A
PROD Cycles between portrait styles. See additional information below.
PULL You pull gently on the bracing bar at the bottom of your black wooden easel to make sure it's secure. Artist pulls gently on a bracing bar at the bottom of her black wooden easel.
RUB Non-master You rub your hand along your black wooden easel and close your eyes, dreaming about someday becoming a Master Painter. Artist rubs her hand along her black wooden easel and closes her eyes. She might be dreaming about becoming a famous painter.
Master You rub your hand along your black wooden easel and close your eyes, dreaming about your success as a Master Painter. Artist rubs her hand along her black wooden easel and closes her eyes. She might be dreaming about her success as a painter.

Canvas Box

Analyze

You analyze your white birch box and sense that the creator has provided the following information:

This white birch box can create sheets of canvas from non-broken foraged twigs, and are to be used with the Artist's Easel sold originally in Bloodriven Village at Duskruin Arena.

Alterations to the box are fine provided the item remains some kind of lidded container
Current verbs: CLOSE, DROP (twig in box), LOOK, OPEN, and SHAKE.

Try as you might, you cannot get a good sense of whether or not the box's pockets could get any deeper, but you can tell that the box is as light as it can get.

Usage

Verb First Third
CLOSE You lower the lid of your white birch box, and its springed hinges force it to snap closed. Artist lowers the lid on her white birch box, and it snaps closed.
DROP (twig in) You drop a slender twig into the box. You hear a faint *plink* as it hits the bottom. N/A
LOOK (in) At the bottom of the box, you notice a series of metal blades connected to some silver gears N/A
OPEN As you lift the lid of your white birch box, its springed hinges force it to pop open. Artist lifts the lid on her white birch box and it springs open.
SHAKE As you shake your white birch box, a crunching sound of blades against wood emerges from within. After a moment, the sound dies down. Artist shakes her white birch box, and a crunching sound of blades against wood emerges from within. After a moment, the sound dies down.

Additional Information

Upon mastering the painting skill, a Master Painter can use a T1 easel to paint another character using one of several pre-written styles. A Master Painter can also use a T2 easel to paint anything within the limits of a 512 character description. In addition, a Master Painter has access to a special postname title listed in the Unique title category. This can be set via TITLE SET UNIQUE MASTER PAINTER.

Canvases must be used on the easel for each painting. A single easel can store up to 40 canvases at any given time. Boxes for making canvases out of foraged non-broken twigs (such as slender twigs or oak twigs) were also sold at the same event for 5k bloodscrip. In addition, stacks of canvases were sold separately.

Skill Level

There are eight total painting skill levels associated with the Artist's Easel. It takes approximately 35-38 paintings to raise one's skill level, although the number of paintings to do so is known to vary from 33 to 42.

The messages you receive for painting at Tier 0 run thus:

Careful not to get too much paint on your paintbrush, you dab the bristles gently against the easel's palette, covering its tip with just the right amount of paint. You begin your project.

You press your paintbrush confidently against the easel's canvas, unsure where your creativity will lead you.

Concentrating intently, you bite your lip as you sweep your paintbrush across the easel, pausing occasionally to stand back and admire your growing talent. Rough outlines of a [random subject for artist's skill level] are beginning to take shape.

More details of a [subject] begin to form on the easel's canvas, your paintbrush gliding slowly across the painting field.

Leaning forward, you blow on the wet paint, hurrying along the drying process. A [subject] is really taking shape, now!

You dab your paintbrush gently against the easel's palette of paint, refining the details on a [subject].

You blot away some excess paint, fill in some bare spots, and stand back to gaze at your creation upon the easel's canvas.

The 'aha' messaging for increasing painting skill is as follows:

As you scrutinize your creation, you realize just how far you've come since you first started sweeping a paintbrush across canvas. It won't be long now before you're a true Master Painter! You feel as if you've learned something.

Skill levels progress starting at zero paintings as a Beginner to Novice, Skilled, Intermediate, Seasoned, Experienced, Advanced, and Master. If no mistakes are made, a painting is completed with six or seven rounds of painting, however it is possible to make a mistake with lower skill levels. If a mistake is made, the painting is automatically started all over again.

Beginner artists take 20 seconds each round of painting and complete a full painting in just over 2 minutes if no mistakes are made.

The roundtime varies depending on the tier quality of the easel used; values listed are as per T1/T2 difference:

  • Novice: 30/15 seconds
  • Skilled: 40/20 seconds
  • Intermediate: 50/25 seconds
  • Seasoned: 60/30 seconds
  • Experienced: 80/40 seconds
  • Advanced and Master: 100/50 seconds per round.

Upon achieving Master, the painter receives access to a Master Painter unique post-name title and sees a new 'aha' message:

Congratulations! You have accomplished a great deal in your studies of fine arts, and you will now be known as a Master Painter in the world of fine arts!

[You now have access to the postname title of "Master Painter"!]
