The character must also know the rune that they wish to draw. Typing the commands RUNE and RUNE UNCOMMON will list the runes available to that character. Brushes, ink, and cups of water can all be purchased at the local alchemist. Water not purchased from the alchemist is not suitable for this process. The brush is reusable, but the ink and water have limited uses. The containers that hold the ink and water can be consolidated by pouring different containers (of the same liquid type) into each other.

Knowledge of a spell will automatically grant a character knowledge of all the runes required for it. These are considered common runes. Additionally, some runes may only be learned by being taught. These are considered uncommon runes.
You must also acquire a canvass upon which to draw the rune. Alchemists sell prepared runestones for a rather hefty price that can be drawn upon once. Alchemists also sell the aish'vrak potion which can be used to prepare a stone for drawing upon. Most gems in the treasure system with the base noun of "stone" can be used as runestones once prepared with this potion. (Note: stones such as moonstones cannot be used as such, as their base is "moonstone" and not "stone") To prepare a stone, simply POUR the potion onto the stone. If a greenish-blue mist rises off of the stone, then it has been successfully prepared and can be drawn upon.

Once you have your prepared stone or runestone and your ink/water/brush, you can begin drawing your runestone. Follow these steps:

*Teaching a rune will always incur a 10 sec RT for both the teacher and student.
*Uncommon runes are seeded into the game via auctions, raffles, and GM characters during RP events.
*Some may be taught indefinately, others only once or twice, and some cannot be taught by players at all.

Using the Runestone
*DIP your BRUSH INTO your INK
*Pull out your prepared stone/runestone
*DRAW <Insert Rune Name Here> RUNE ON your RUNESTONE/STONE WITH your BRUSH
*Pull out your flask or cup of water
*DIP your BRUSH INTO your CUP/FLASK (to clean it off afterwards)

The number of charges, and verb to activate each runestone is based on the rune drawn upon it. Generally, you will need to rub, wave, or cast at them. A list of currently available runes can be found here.
Note that a brush can be used to draw two runestones with one dose of ink. So do not dip the brush into your cup or flask until you have used the same dose of ink twice, or else you are wasting your ink.

Using a runestone requires you to either cast your spell at the runestone (in the case of Minor Summoning (725) and Spirit Servant (218)) or to wave the stone at a particular object (as in the case of Scroll Infusion (714))

A runestone is a stone with a magical rune drawn upon it. To determine which rune is on the stone, read it. They are commonly used as a component in the following spells:

Required Supplies

To create a runestone, one must acquire the following items, available at a local alchemist.

 • a brush (reusable)
 • a container of ink (X dips each)
 • a container of water (Y dips each)
 • a prepared stone or runestone upon which to draw the rune

Prepared Stone vs. Runestone

Alchemists sell runestones which are ready to be drawn upon, however it is typically cheaper to create your own. To do so, acquire a smooth stone or any gem with "stone" as its noun ("moonstone" would not be applicable). Then pour an aish'vrak potion on it. If successful, you will see a "greenish-blue mist" rise from the stone, indicating it is ready to be drawn upon. To draw the rune itself:

 • Apply ink to the brush: DIP MY BRUSH INTO MY [ink|flask|etc.]
 • Draw the desired rune upon it: DRAW <rune_name> RUNE ON MY [stone|runestone] WITH MY BRUSH
 • You may draw two runes with each application of ink.
 • Then the brush must be cleaned before applying ink again: DIP MY BRUSH INTO MY [cup|flask|etc.]
 • The containers of ink and water can be consolidated by pouring containers of the same type into each other.

Common and Uncommon Runes

Knowledge of a spell will automatically grant a character knowledge of all the runes required for it. These are considered common runes. Additionally, some runes may only be learned by being taught. These are considered uncommon runes.

 • Use the RUNE verb to display the runes your character knows.
 • The syntax to teach a rune is: RUNE TEACH <character> <rune_name>
 • Teaching a rune will always incur a 10 sec RT for both the teacher and student.
 • Uncommon runes are seeded into the game via auctions, raffles, and GM characters during RP events.
 • Some may be taught indefinately, others only once or twice, and some cannot be taught by players at all.

Using the Runestone

The number of charges, and verb to activate each runestone is based on the rune drawn upon it. Generally, you will need to rub, wave, or cast at them. A list of currently available runes can be found here.
