Since the final battle with the Lich King almost two months ago, Mayor Walkar has seldom made any public appearances. This morning, with barely a glimmer of sunlight on the horizon, the mayor gathered before a small crowd outside of Moot Hall to make an announcement.

“Months ago, we defeated Barnom Slim and severely crushed the Brotherhood of Rooks. While the shadowy birdmen and their bandits still exist, a great measure of peace has returned to our town and our merchants are not drowning in fear. I understand that without the loyal citizens of Wehnimer’s Landing, and the brave adventurers who came to our aid from all over, we never would have prevailed over our enemies.”

“Years ago, after a successful victory against some of Grishom Stone’s minions, I commended a handful of adventurers as Defenders of Wehnimer’s Landing, and condemned others who allied with evil. Today, I do so again. While I am grateful for everyone’s sacrifice for our town, there are a few I would like to recognize as Defenders for their roles in supporting others, protecting the town and its people, and keeping the community and our heroes informed. I bestow this honor upon Arpelli, Maags, Kiske, Kerl, Sarvia, Clunk, Puptilian, Ravashaak, Geijon, and Ewin.”

“However, those who align with darkness shall not slip silently away, and may your actions and rotting hearts forever haunt you. From this point forward, Cruxophim, Yinh, Yangh, Semiera, Xoryl, Bellaja, Raincail and Dayko shall be known as Disciples of the Lich. We will not forget the pacts you have made. Lastly, I bring attention to Kastrel, the Dark Scholar, who while never raised a hand against the town, may not have the luxury of neutrality next time.”

Without further comments, or taking any questions about his arm or the murky black pools in town, Mayor Walkar returned inside of Moot Hall.

OOC Note:

Back in 2010, I handed out [[some titles]] for some heroes and villains involved in parts of my storyline. This year I wanted to do the same with some players who were part of the Lich King storyline. Giving out titles is always a blessing and a curse. I love to recognize player’s efforts, but in order to maintain the rarity of titles, I’m limited in how many I can do. Then of course, there’s always some I can never please. But I’d rather do something, than nothing. Below is an official breakdown of the players and their titles. I will be tracking each of you down over the next few weeks to grant you access to them. I’m very fortunate to be the guru of the best town and a great player base and I appreciate all of the time and deeds every one puts into my storylines. It’s incredibly rewarding on my end. Thank you all again, and can’t wait for the end of the year when the final chapter begins…

Yesterday afternoon, the docks on the east side of town caught on fire. Townsfolk with buckets rushed to put them out and discovered that they were centered on the Guttin' Goods fishing shop. The shopkeeper there was screaming about how it must be the "birds," but after the fires were out, changed his story to blame unspecified "vandals." He promised to inform the mayor.

Later that night, during the fireworks that followed the Silvergate Winter Gala, white lights appeared in the sky to the northwest of town and heralded an invasion of krolvin zombies on the Black Sands. A voice in the fog typical evil-overlord comments. They were fairly easily repelled, with only a few casualties on the defenders' side, but the zombies disappeared into the fog and are likely gathering in strength nearby. The strongest of the zombies were a good bit more powerful than a grand lord, however.

After an attack on Tykel's Arms today, a group of various sorts investigated some hidden passageways in the catacombs and ultimately came upon a trapdoor in the Fishing Shop. Underneath is a network of tunnels which connects to a variety of different locations within and outside of the Landing. The tunnels are inhabited by bandits of the Adventurer's Guild sort, attacking from hiding with traps, maneuvers, and dispel crystals. This led to many deaths as seemingly capped bandits unleashed with difficult to defend-against maneuvers and AS. After a brief while, the forces were whittled down, and the tunnels were able to be explored. However, a mere few hours later, after a ghastly vision seen by most of the town, the tunnels have been reinhabited. Enter at your own risk. The most easily accessed entrance is in the fishing shop, but there are other ways in.

This map has been created for those wishing to enter and explore it fully.

Days ago, the half-krolvin merchant Cutlass saw his fishing shop, Guttin’ Goods, set on fire. When questioned by those who helped put out the flames, he claimed it must have been some vandals with anti-krolvin prejudices.

This evening, adventurers in town were alerted to a strike on Tykel’s Arms, where broken glass and two bricks were found inside, along with an angry Tykel. When questioned, he informed those present that he had been approached by some shadowy figures twice, offering a lucrative deal if he’d help them smuggle wares. Tykel refused on both occasions and was seemingly targeted because of it. The old weaponsmith described his “guests” as tall humanoids, who wore heavy cloaks with deep cowls, hiding their faces in darkness except for their sharp greyish-black beaks.

A few local heroes spotted a bird-looking figure outside of the shop and pursued it. Eventually, they arrived at the fishing shop, where they accessed a series of underground tunnels through a trapdoor. Bandits staged numerous attacks on any intruders through the tunnels, but eventually they retreated back into the shadows. The adventurers went on to explore the tunnels, discovering they connecting to various locales in and around Wehnimer’s Landing.

OOC note: The Wehnimer’s Landing Burrow Way has been released! There are many ways in and out of the tunnels, and I’ll leave it up to you and others to explore (many of you have, and I see a player map is already released. You guys are fast!)

That being said, these tunnels are a new permanent fixture to Wehnimer’s Landing. They serve a very big purpose during this storyline, but will remain an ongoing area to the town, which can be ideal for players to move in and around town in case say…there’s danger. HUGE thanks to GM Tamuz for the QC work on this! Enjoy exploring!

(Note: This area will go live in Plat next year, after the storyline I'm currently running in Prime is done.)

Subject: Grave Tidings

Two evenings ago, townspeople reported seeing ghostly white lights in the night sky above Wehnimer’s Landing, glowing amidst falling snow. The ethereal motes descended upon the town’s local graveyard near the Temple. As adventurers rushed to investigate, a thick white fog rolled through the streets of town and into the graveyard. Soon, the ground began to crack and tombstones crumbled as the earth shifted. From out of the ground, rose over hundreds of zombies, ghouls, skeletons, and ghastly spirits.

The first undead to rise were weak and hardly a challenge to the heroes present, but soon more fearsome creatures appeared and the adventurers were overcome, many driven out of the graveyard, or killed. When the graveyard seemed on the brink of being overrun by dark spirits, Mayor Walkar appeared, charging through the gate and dragging the bodies of many heroes to safety. Witnesses claim Walkar then re-entered the graveyard, braving the horde of undead and going into a berserker rage as he worked to dispatch them. He was later joined by some other adventurers who helped purge the undead.

But the dead kept rising, pushing up from out of their age old graves. The onslaught seemed endless, until the undead creatures begin to disappear into the fog floating through the graveyard. Shortly afterwards, the fog, and the undead, were gone.

The Mayor rejoined the crowd of townspeople, but appeared exhausted and about to fall over, so he excused himself and retired for the evening. He has issued no official comment since the incident. However, a few citizens made the following observations.

“I saw bright flashes of red light through the graveyard gate, when Walkar was in there fighting. Some say it’s his armor. Whatever it was, I’m glad he helped us,” someone said.

Another citizen, who preferred to be nameless, commented, “I heard people say that the mayor was never attacked by the zombies. Makes you wonder, right?”

Battle Report 12/8

Powerful magic is at work. The entire Landing saw visions tonight before an exploratory attack by our new threat occured. As I can recount the vision was as follows:

"The world shifts before you, colors melting away as your environs change. A long cobblestone road stretches outward, its surface twisted and uneven, as well as slick from blood. Disfigured bodies are hoisted up on stakes, creating a ghastly border along both sides of the path. The vision quickly ends."

Light motes descended shortly afterwards. Scouts spread out as they were seen sparking in various directions. Eventually they were south-easterly, presumed and the caravan of the Tinkerer was scoured. Several noted why a proper burial hadn't taken place then a voice was heard over the battlefield carried by the wind, "My eternal servants...rise from your rock...embrace my call....crawl then walk."

More motes along the Northern slopes of Wehntoph were seen and our battle groups moved to engage. Mixed in with the wind witches, ogres, and thunder trolls appeared ghoulish puma's, zombie trolls, and molded ogres. (I put them around the level of the area 21-24ish on the higher end) Our battle groups were spread out in tiers along the slopes at the base, mid-slopes, and the face lead by Ardwen, Svardin, and Kerl respectively.

Once these minions proved ineffective tall ogre skeletons rose along with twised (lrn2spell Kenstrom!) troll phantoms, and huge molded ogres. (I'd place these between 45-60). Kaedra was incredibly effective with fire spirit against them (I believe, ask the cleric, but they'd melt). All battle groups were effectively warmed up and working effectively well at this point.

We must have angered the necromancer at this point because he woke the mountain spirits against us around this time (each wave was about 20 minutes long) and Wehnimer's Landing was taking casulties. The glowing-eyed spectral ogres seems to cause some havok because mixed in with the spirits, who were very hardy and resistant to targeted elimination, could engage with some effectiveness, each battle group on the field. (These were probably 75-90. If they are capped, don't quote me)

This forced us into skirmish battles eventually as the spirits were heavy. Our group did effectively use smite and engaged a lot of these waves in close unarmed combat as it worked in tandem with Rtune, Arwen, and Kaedra and our martial members, but the heavy amount of spirits caused casulties in all three groups. Once the spirits were under control and re-engaged zombie minotaurs joined the fray huge numbers and we had to use several fighting retreats to thin them out and ensure we weren't all overrun. (Zombie Minotaurs were probably capped with 540 AS and were dangerous for many). One large rushes major elemental wave was productive and our mages noted they were leachable if we see them on the field again.

After heavy fighting extending over an hour or so the undead host vanished back into the fog. As the fog dissipated the field was clear and our enemy had gone. It was noted amongst our group that they didn't seem very tactical and appeared to be testing our capabilities.

Subject: Merchants Uneasy in Wehnimer’s

A string of vandalism, threats, and outright ambushes over the last two weeks have made a number of merchants in Wehnimer’s Landing uneasy. Shops have been set on fire, windows have been broken, and more than a few merchants have lost countless hours of sleep.

Tykel, the local weaponsmith, was heard complaining about those who had attacked his shop. “Birdmen, best I can describe ‘em as. Faces were all dark from their hoods, except for them damn grey beaks sticking out, lookin’ as sharp as any o’ me blades. Man, bird, demon? They can threaten me all they want, but I’ll die before I work with ‘em.”

A number of representatives among the merchant’s guild filed complaints with the mayor’s office, demanding action to address the escalating crimes in town. Mayor Walkar issued a statement, claiming he would hold a town hall meeting this week, where merchants and townspeople could attend, so they could discuss any potential solutions to dealing with the so-called “Brotherhood of Rooks.”

The town hall meeting with the mayor is scheduled for Niiman, the 13th of Eorgaen at 6:30pm Elven. (Thurs, Dec 13th, 6:30pm Eastern.)

Standing in the showroom in solidarity with the weaponsmith Tykel, Geijon shakes his head and raises his voice, "Tykel, while gruff and coarse at times, has met a great deal of hardship in the last few months, including the loss of his daughter. I salute his resolve as he's stood stoicly with Wehnimer's through its troubling time and his own personal tragedy. If for any reason besides company I'll do my best to keep an eye on things at his shop with him. I'll be found in his showroom as extra lookout for continued behavior for those looking for me"

Geijon draws a breath and continues, "After taking a mixed beating tonight in the burrows and getting a taste for shooting gallery turkey shoots, with us being the turkeys, I'm doubly motivated to put an end to this problem with the so called "Rooks", indeed."

Last evening a wave of golems and demons arrived in the Lower Dragonsclaw Forest and eventually made their way inside of Wehnimer's Landing. Local heroes and citizens rushed to the defense of the town and while they toppled the invaders left and right, Walkar appeared out of the forest dragging fallen adventurers back to town. Disheveled, dirty, but alive, Walkar joined defenders of the town as they pushed back into the forest finally driving back the golems and a handful of demons that had accompanied them.

Walkar's bloodhound was seen rushing through the town gates to meet the recently returned mayor inside his office in Moot Hall. The mayor visited with many townspeople in his office while he briefly described his adventure over the last few months and his appreciation for being home.

This morning, Mayor Walkar released his first announcement since returning, "This town has survived because of the strong will of our people who thanklessly defended its walls and its honor in times of darkness, when all seemed lost. I am forever grateful for those who never lost faith in me and never gave up on our city. I have been vindicated in the eyes of the people and in the eyes of our council, who until recently had lost their way. Juramis and many of the town council were manipulated by our true enemy, Grishom Stone. In the coming weeks I will let the people decide our council's fate, but now is the time for us to join together. We need to correct our errors and finally drive division out of this town, not by fear or gallows, but by forgiveness and determination. Grishom Stone is our enemy and we will not lose sight of this, nor will we idly stand by and remain only on the defense. Grishom, we are coming for you. No golem, no magic and no island can protect you from the united wrath of Wehnimer's Landing!"

...excerpt from the diary of Oritori Martinae, 16 Eorgaen, 5112

No initial reports going out, despite have prepared the printing press and means of distribution. Two of the LNN reporters slain - throats cut and cold bodies tossed into dark alleys. Presumably by the cowled figures of the Brotherhood of the Rooks. I rue the day I allowed them to help me smuggle the press into the cell.

At least the first reports are finally rolled out.. That's something, isn't it? ______________________________________________________________

Attacked! Maimed! Killed! LNN reporters found dead in the streets. Alas poor Borrowsum and Cirsmon. I didn't know them hardly at all. But at least they left a legacy behind. Lots of unspent cash from recent reporting ventures. Not being too scrupulous, most LNN reporters partook of dividing the loot and going on drinking binges. I was a bit drunk tonight when floating, ethereal white spheres appeared in the sky over town. Even as drunk as I was, I managed to follow the spheres until they appeared to descend around the location of the Mine Road.

It didn't take long until I was swept up into one of the many groups patrolling the road and battling the undead that seemed to appear from every crack and crevice in the ground. Zombie archers? They couldn't hit the broad side of a rolton. Plus they moved like - well - me, after a long night of grog and hitting on Helga.

Forces quickly drove back the less skilled undead. Soon a hazy fog descended upon the road. The sounds slightly muffled from the moisture, but nonetheless still a bit frightening to this young reporter, further undead sightings. Tons of giant spiders, undead worms, and even what appeared to be one very lost, fleshsore kobold managed to decimate the defenders. Skirmishes broke down into individual fights, with neither side really getting the upper hand. All at once it seemed the fog retreated and the undead disappeared..... To where? Nobody knows, but rumor and speculation abound.

Before the undead left, a vision was seen by some of those still living of a throne and a figure seated upon it - the figure wearing crown of bone.

Those who had been killed and raised by various clerics said they felt the pull of someone or something claiming to be the king of the dead, calling to them, urging them to give up their mortal existence and to serve their king.

Despite all the ruckus that has occured, life proceeded as normal within the confines of the landing. Merchants were clogging everyone's head hawking their wares. One thief in the park cleaned out all who stopped their for spells or a rest. (The Landing News Network - LNN - management disavows any knowledge of said thievery and states that it does not condone any thieving behavior. What one lone reporter does on his time is his business.) Orphans were seeking refuge and solace from those who are championing their causes. It will be interesting to see if in the future such normal lifestyles continue. - LNN

Mayor Walkar gathered a small crowd outside Moot Hall this morning and shared some information.

"With Barnom run out of town, I have taken quick action to set things right. It is absurd to even speculate that groups who so valiantly defend this town would undergo the type of scrutiny and torment that I've learned has recently happened. The Order of the Silver Gryphon's Holding has now been reopened and all investigations dismissed. The notion of the Drakes Vanguard needing to make some public oath of loyalty has also been dismissed. Our defenders of this town have spoken countless times with their actions alone. I also want to thank the Black Wolves, House Phoenix and House Arcane and any other organizations that rose up to defy Barnom Slim and his corruption. This town is in debt to you.

I have also released Khylon, our town marshal and my friend from captivity. He refused to give details about the heroes who helped me escape and for that he paid a price from Barnom and his torturers, but it is nothing the good dwarf cannot come back from. I would expect his presence in town soon, despite my objections. Lastly, our prisoner Drangell remains locked away and it seems Barnom and his allies were never able to locate his true location and that is no small victory."

The Mayor then walked off, commenting about needing to find Juramis and get his axe back.

Recently women in or around Wehnimer's Landing have reported odd ghostly whispers, each one cautioning them about a sea blue eyed man and the danger he would bring them. The eerie warnings have only been the beginning as many women also recount seeing ghastly visages of tortured ghosts, all seemingly trying to warn them of a similar fate.

Larton, the local locksmith was quite agitated this morning, "As if my ex-wife wasn't annoying enough, now she won't stop talking to me about these ghosts. I'd have her locked up, if it weren't happening to every woman in town! All I know is Grishom Stone is still out there, and his evil is still tormenting this town. If he's thinking we've forgotten so soon, we haven't and we're ready for a fight!"

OOC NOTE:

Something will happen soon that will allow all of you to finally take the fight to Grishom Stone. Originally I had intended for this to happen a week sooner, but such is life. Also I felt it was important to let you all know this "battle" will not be won in one day, so everyone should have plenty of time ( weeks ) to wage war and all levels will find something to challenge them! With Christmas right around the corner I won't be doing much because I don't want you all missing out, plus I'll be occupied with real life stuff as well. Overall this storyline will not conclude until around the middle of January, so there's still some action and revelations left!

Last evening several citizens, including me, were standing by the well at the town square. We noticed a Rook walk by us, which was startling considering their secrecy. Puptilian lead a group into the tunnels, while the rest of us prepared for battle. As the group I was in, walked onto South Ring Road, we began to notice more and more Rooks solo or in pairs rushing by us. As reports came in that they could not see anything suspicious in town, or tunnels or outlaying areas, Meureii was kidnapped from us.

Folks ran about trying to find him before what has happened to others, also happen to him. We heard of his being taken to, of all places, the Glacier. It seems it was a ruse, a distraction as we heard reports of a fire at the North Docks. Many ran there and saw the wreckage of a burnt ship, and a chest with melted lockpicks. As we tried to put out the firse with no effect, the fire as if my magic, spread quickly and became too hot. Many of us got burned and died.

As we recovered we ran back to the North Docks, and we heard Larton the locksmith indicated he had refused to pay so-called "protection money?". In return it appears the Rooks had targeted the ship, containing some of his supplies, which spread out to the docks. Seems the half-krol shopkeeper of the fish shop had agreed to pay, according to Larton. Larton was about ready to throw in his lockpicks, when many indicated they would help protect his shop. For the time being, he has changed his mind, and will stick it out.

Perhaps speculation and knowledge, but, these Rooks appear to be a Brotherhood of Thieves and Murderers. More time will be needed to find out and hunt them down.

sincerely,

Subject: Sealed Parchment to Town Council

Town Council,

The Landing was attacked by bandits, thugs last night, and we noticed bandit recruits. So it seems the Brotherhood of the Rooks is recruiting. We finished our last battle next to Moot Hall, and Marshal Khylon was there. Kaedra had picked up a parchment from one of the bandits. Khylon saw it..and asked for it. He indicated it appeared to be the names of the new recruits, and read off a few, which no one seemed to know. There was one though, Arpelli, as he read it off. Many in the crowd were at first dismayed to hear her name.

Of course many of the citizens offered support on her behalf. Khylon indicated to her she could come with her so they could inquire. Arpelli was hesitant for obvious reasons, but she was given the option of having someone come along with her. She chose me. So I accompanied Khylon and her, while protecting her, to the Council room. Khlyon indicated he did not believe she was a recruit, and agreed it appeared she was being set up.

After a few minutes of responding to his question(s) of why they may perceive Arpelli as a threat, a shadow stunned in on the head, and she fell. I was quickly stunned as well, but was able to berserk my way out. While I was trying to recover her, Khlyon was dragged off by the shadows. Then as I was trying to drag her out the door, it was slammed shut and locked. Arpelli quickly died, from some shadowy form surrounding her, then it befell me as well. After our demise, we heard from the shadows, "thanks, Arpelli". I could only discern that Arpelliw as the bait, and Khylon was the true target.

I sent a need thought out, so the folks would know where we were, as they had no clue before. They eventually broke through the closed door and dragged us out to be raised and cured. On the side of Moot Hall, there is a bloody message saying something about a ransom for Marshal Khylon.

As of yet, council members, we hae nae received an actual request for a ransom amount or anything similar. I do believe Arpelli was obviously used as a pawn.

sincerely,

Sir Cryheart Thaxin Order of the Silver Gryphon

Subject: All Hail the Lich King!

Tonight, the Brotherhood of Rooks went about trying to expand their tunnels, with deadly results! A number of scorched and battered bandit corpses were found at a new opening in the Burrow Way tunnels. Many heroes investigated the area, trying to navigate through the cavern darkness. They finally came out in an underground cavern, where they found a gate leading to an dark city called Lich’s Landing, which is filled with hordes of undead and designed to appear like a macabre version of Wehnimer’s! There, the heroes encountered Barnom Slim, who has now become a lich and self-proclaimed king of the area. Despite the trade of barbs, veiled threats and vague information, no further violence was reported.

OOC NOTE:

The Lich’s Landing is the new temporary hunting zones open for the remainder of the storyline! There’s a few minor shops ( nothing special ) and even an undead tavern! There’s 8 different zones, and the entire place ranges from levels 5-120. Enjoy discovering which areas you can survive in!

Rooks Nest 12/15/12

After battling orcs, trolls and such last night in the wooded hills, near Kai's shrine, we got a call from Marshal Khylon. A sizable group met with him outside of Moot Hall. He indicated he was going hunting and to call out to the defenders of the town. Whilst he went to prepare himself, we sent messengers to all citizens.

After many citizens had heeded the call, eventually Marshal Khylon returned to Moot Hall. We all joined him for the hunt. As we had guessed, we went into the Landing Burrows to seek out more bandits and/or the Rooks. We were attacked many times as the bandits shot arrows through the holes in the sides of the tunnels, stunning many of us at various times. Several died in the course of making our way to the discovered new digging site.

We managed to discover the Rook's nest and had a big battle. As their numbers depleted, moving northward, we came across a room with a chest. Inside the chest we found parchment maps, and such. They described tunnels in various locations, in particular, the prison. That made us really curious, then the speculation began. One thought, our infamous prisoner, Drangell. We also saw a parchment that made a reference to the County of Seareach.

After subduing those who attacked us in a few rooms, Marshal Khylon went to report to Mayor Walkar. We sought to clear the tunnels of this infestation, and a few more citizens joined us. We finally cleared out the Rook's nest for this time, and walked to the Heartstone porch, where we discussed the maps and reasons for them wanting us to stay out of the Burrows.

....the plot continues, I am sure more there will be more to come.

Sincerely,

After an invasion well after midnight, Mayor Walkar appeared outside of Moot Hall to announce the news that Councilman Juramis's promise of replacing the funds for the militia that Barnom Slim had stolen had come through. Members of the town militia gathered around the Mayor and swore protection of the town and its people.

Mayor Walkar went on to say, "The town militia is back and our old members, those loyal to Wehnimer's and not corruption, are returning every hour! We have endured the meddling of Grishom Stone but our city has survived! The wheeled tower is currently in Town Square Central and can be moved around to help defend our town! Tonight we take the battle to Grishom Stone and will end him no matter what!"

Many in the crowd cheered the announcement while a few remained skeptical, wondering what the cost of victory would be.

Subject: Grishom Stone dead! Wehnimer's Landing victorious!

On Feastday, the 14th of Lormesta, the final battle against Grishom Stone began! The town of Wehnimer's Landing had seen waves of demons, golems and fire elementals attack, each assault from the invaders pushed back every time. After much fighting to defend the town, Mayor Walkar and Councilman Juramis launched an attack on Erythro Island, accompanied by the heroes and defenders of Wehnimer's Landing!

While the attack on Erythro Island was underway, an onslaught of summoned minions still attacked Wehnimer's Landing, but many local citizens and heroes rose up to defend the town while the battle to end Grishom Stone raged far away. Reported by witnesses who participated in the invasion, the man known as Elithain Cross soon joined the attackers on the island and helped lead the way into the depths of Grishom's domain, destroying four of his powerful golem creations before he could activate them.

With the spiritual aid of many present, Elithain drew upon the heroes' energies to imbue it into a magical orb, which once they confronted Grishom in his ritual chamber, the light within the orb was able to be activated to temporarily weaken the summoner. Once Grishom was weakened by the heroes' spiritual assault, Elithain was able to use his scepter to turn Grishom into stone, preventing his ritual and severing the link with him and the island.

In a surprising turn of events, Elithain immobilized the heroes and finished Grishom's ritual, channeling the spirits of hundreds of women into a large chunk of urnon, successfully creating a golem with the dominate spirit of his daughter, Madelyne. With his two goals accomplished, the defeat of Grishom Stone and the claiming of the urnon golem, Elithain teleported away taking his new powerful servant with him.

Having been betrayed by Elithain, the heroes were left with little time to react. With the stone form of Grishom before them, the heroes destroyed the statue then located the heart of Erythro Island. Surviving against disease, blood golems and death maggots, the heroes finally destroyed the heart and quickly escaped as the island began to break apart and decay around them.

Returning to Wehnimer's Landing, the mayor collapsed from exhaustion and had no choice but to turn in for the night. Early this morning, Mayor Walkar reappeared outside of Moot Hall, looking healthier and addressing those present.

"Grishom Stone is dead! I have looked forward to nothing more than being able to utter those words! Our town has suffered for nearly two years from the manipulations and depravity of Grishom and his summoner allies. We have seen golems nearly topple our walls and trolls besiege our gates. We have seen our own people threaten to divide our town, blindly forgetting that this monster sacrificed many of our women and children. But through all of the darkness, we have survived. We have grown. We have become stronger because of it. Our citizens and heroes of this town have risen up to protect it, time and again. We have seen allies from other cities arrive to join our cause, to take up arms in our time of need. We have seen friendships formed in these trying times and they are bonds that no zealot or demon can break. I could not be more proud of our citizens and allies and I can never thank you all enough for your sacrifices. Together, all of us, helping in any way we could, we defeated our enemy once and for all! Most of all we have shown the world that Wehnimer's Landing is a force to be respected and feared."

My fellow citizens,

Several evenings ago there were some..events that occurred. I feel these should be shared so that should anyone else see or experience something similar, they aren't as taken by surprise as I was.

Sarvia, Ravashaak and myself were sitting around discussing our various (rather mundane) activities of that evening. Around the time that I was discussing the exploration of Lich's Landing I'd done earlier that evening with Ewin, I mentioned that I had refused any food or drink from Lich's Landing (the idea of it just didn't sit right with me). Shortly after discussing that, I heard a voice in my head yell at me….

A shrill voice echoes in your mind, "The Lich King offers you a drink, and you reject it? Rude, tactless, and...still rude!" The voice screams then fades away.

Needless to say, I was somewhat flustered. Just as I was starting to calm down, I began to see several other visions. One of some thin red lines beginning to wrap around Ravashaak's neck. Another of Sarvia's face melting off, and her laughing at me. (At this point, I was melting down just a bit and possibly hiding under the table.) There was also a vision of a pool of blood....

Blood begins to pool around your feet, slowly expanding to cover the entire area. Tiny, white maggots float on the surface of the blood, their diminituve beady eyes staring up at you.

I heard another voice shortly after that vision...

A soft, calm voice whispers in your ear, "I can save you, from the shadows. Serve your King." The feeling of a hand touching your shoulder appears, then fades along with the voice.

I had some very loud and vocal opinions about that particular idea, most of which I cannot repeat here. However, I said no.

There was a final vision, and I don't know that I can bring myself to share it here, as it was a very bloody vision of my very bloody death at the hands of Mayor Walkar.

Last evening in Wehnimer’s Landing, many townspeople noticed some shadowy figures with grey beaks moving hurriedly through the streets. A number of adventurers came together to form patrols in searching for the Brotherhood of Rooks moving about openly.

Moments later, a new message written in blood had appeared on the walls outside of Moot Hall, along with three bloodied dwarven fingers pinned to the entrance of the building. The message read, “Drangell for your Dwarf.”

After discovering the message, many local adventurers confronted Drangell in his cell in the basement of the prison on South Ring Road. The criminal mostly mocked those present and was pretty confident Mayor Walkar would give in to the Rooks’ demands, eventually setting him free. The true reasoning behind the Rooks’ request remains unclear, as some have speculated Drangell may be valuable to the leader behind the Rooks, or perhaps may even be the leader himself.

Mayor Walkar was not present during last night’s events, but he released the following statement moments ago, “These Rooks are merely a Brotherhood of Cowards, using shadows and fear to try to manipulate others. We did not bend to demands in the past, we will not start now.”

Furthermore, he had a message directly for the Rooks. “If you think to come into our town and terrorize us into submission, you will find only death and defeat in your future. If you return our town marshal Khylon to us now, without further harm, I can forget it happened. If you do not? Then I will ensure every last one of your Brotherhood is hunted down and killed, along with your families, and I assure you, more than just fingers will be pinned to the walls of Moot Hall.”

....without which the Rooks never would have managed to make their way unnoticed within the prison. I doubt it would have done any good, but at least the guards would have given alarm - assuming they would not have wound up face down in pools of their own blood. Can't believe I thought by them so quickly and cheaply offering to smuggle the LNN printing press into the prison that they would not use and abuse the newly dug tunnel for their own nefarious purposes.

I've thought of revealing the press', and the printer's location. To what avail? Lately it would seem that I'd end up at the end of an overly short rope in the form of a noose - all at Walkar's urging. No, best keep quiet about my meddlings. Finally, the most recent written reports of the reporters are most - disturbing...

3 Lormesta, 5113 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This reporter is lucky to be alive! Through town square central a cloaked figure ran, nay, the figure raced. I stood by watching and listening. Soon half the town was traipsing roundabout searching for the rooks. Like they even had a clue where to look. Soon enough someone wandered by Moot Hall. Three bloody fingers still dripping what little life's blood they contained were tacked to the doors of the Hall. Everyday life in the Landing continued apace except for the scream heard next throughout town square. For those who hadn't heard the scream, the night was still relatively peaceful. For those who had heard the scream but hadn't seen the fingers tacked to the door, probably they figured Sleepy had finally roused Helga's interest. For those who hd heard the scream AND seen the fingers tacked to the door, the night had gone from peaceful to something different entirely. A menacing something different. And not the type of menacing one would feel from trying a bit of Helga's stew.

A note written in blood, amazingly not removed within mere moments by the town's janitorial staff, read: "Free the landing 23." OPPS! Wrong story. Rather a message about the dwarf for Drangell. (For those of you still unsure who Drangell is, please see the LNN editorial #27, issue 4.) Anyhow... Off we all went to the door outside Drangell's cell. It was rather amusing watching people addressing a steel cell door as opposed to the prisoner behind it.

So much information was hurtled Drangell's way that it was amazing he hadn't already overtaken the town from within the confines of his cell. Even the LNN printer shackled next door found out tons of information from loose lips apparently wishing to feel important. Drangell made out like he knew everything already. That he had conspired with the Rooks to ensure they'd kidnapped the marshal. That he'd set it up to have his freedom the price for the marshal's return. If anyone present actually listened to his words, he was quite adept at fishing infromation from the heroes present using naught but his naked hook as bait. Hook, line, sinker, and pole, the invisible bait was gobbled up incessantly.

After Drangell had finished garnering any useful information and things began going in circles, he dismissed the heroes still present. Those present, even though the Rooks, Drangell, Walkar, Barnom Stone, and pretty much the entire native population of Elanthia stated that there was not any connection between the Rooks and the Lich King, decided that it might be a good idea to search for the Rooks in the Lich's Landing. Needless to say, this revealed not only little fruit, but none.

Once back in the burrow tunnels, hoardes of bandits began attacking the assembled heroes. Trying to make sure this story made it before the presses were shut down for the evening, this reporter booked it out of there and turned in the tale. Luckily I managed to fill in a few gaps from those who remained behind...

Not content with having their numbers culled rather quickly, the bandits again resorted to murder holes to injure and kill a few people. One or two of those dead claimed to have heard the call of the lich king offering them all sorts of powers, and possibly even cable tv, if they but joined him. None accepted the invitation. It was press time and all other events that occured after the deadline are likely not worthy of improper reporting. - LNN

It is now said that the Lich King intends to make Ta’Vaalor and Ta’Illistim the first stops on his journey east and is expected to approach Ta’Vaalor around the afternoon of Feastday the 12th. He has sent a message to the elven rulers ahead of his arrival.

“Perilous times call for peculiar allies,” Barnom wrote, “That time is now. Dark, consuming shadows gather at the edges of the world, and while it will not begin in your lands, it will not end there either. I will come to your nations to discuss the importance of the alliance we may create and the hope of preserving your people for eternity. I will expect the same courtesy you would grant visiting monarchs.”

On Niiman, the 10th day of Lormesta, in the year 5113, a group of adventurers kidnapped one of the rooks who had approached a shop in the town of Wehnimer's Landing. The rook was taken to a secure, secluded location and questioned.

We were able to able to get some answers to the questions that were asked, and we learned the following:

The rooks are of a humanoid nature, and their leader is Drangell. The rook we questioned did not know where Marshall was being kept. They seem to be treated with a "need to know" mentality, and really know very few details beyond who their leader is. They do, however, feel that this town is theirs. The rook was firm in his belief.

The rook left behind his belongings, which included a gleaming silver tiger-claw, a deeply-cowled flowing black cloak, a tiny red crystal rook amulet, a smooth black witchwood mask, a pair of deep black gloves and a smoky shadowglass ring. Many of these items were magical, and are obviously used in helping them move undetected throughout our town. Both the ring and gloves were magical, holding Invisibility and Darkness, respectively. The mask was initially insignificant, but upon further inspection and after wearing it and rubbing it, it changed.

You rub your black witchwood mask, and its appearance morphs into the face of a black-feathered bird complete with a gleaming grey beak. A moment later, the mask shifts back to normal.

The amulet was also tested and appears to have the same communicative properties of our own crystal amulets.

Those present were Arpelli, Kiske, Ewin, Puptilian, Sarvia, Ravashaak, Sir Ruffelin, Alesse, Meureii, Lord Perivan, High Lady Evia.

The Lich King, Barnom Slim, traveled this weekend to the Elven Nations to try to secure an alliance with the Elven Houses. While few believed he would be successful, his trip was not about to be overlooked by the forces of justice.

Over the last few days, Mayor Walkar had been secretly meeting with the Grandmaster of the local Voln chapter near Wehnimer’s Landing about strategies against the lich. When it was finally confirmed that Barnom Slim had reached Ta’Vaalor, the Order of Voln launched an offensive into Lich’s Landing, sending waves of holy warriors into the dark city to combat the undead hordes.

The evil denizens of Lich’s Landing rose to meet the assault and the conflict still currently rages on. Witnesses reported to have seen Voln warriors wading into the streets of the underground town, releasing souls where they could.

The Voln Grandmaster called upon all followers of the Order to answer the call to arms and help to lay waste to the city of undead.

OOC Note:

For now, the major streets of Lich’s Landing will see Voln warriors auto-spawning. They are player friendly and will hack down undead! They have not yet made any foothold into the higher level areas, so no need to yell “chasing!”.

Oh man, Barnom is probably pissed!

On the 12th of Lormesta, The Lich King, accompanied by a host of undead servants, arrived through the Fearling Pass to stop before the Amaranth Gate of Ta’Vaalor. His minions announced his arrival and a while later, Qalinor Falustro Vaalor, the Steward of Ta’Vaalor and Jaranzair Nashal Vaalor the Lord Legionnaire Commander led a group of adventurers to meet with the visiting lich.

Barnom Slim, the lich, prattled on about how he was coming to the Elven Houses to offer them salvation against the threat of the shadows that were gathering at the edges of the world, threatening to consume every living soul. The lich proclaimed that Vaalor was the first House to receive his invitation, for they were the might and strength of the elves and where they went, the others would likely follow.

Of course, Steward Qalinor informed the lich king that they would never forget the undead wars and that their kind, and any shadowy threat, would be defeated. The lich king did not take lightly to being rejected and commanded his undead to attack the fortress city. After a grueling battle that waged along the Fearling Pass and Amaranth Bridge, the lich’s forces were destroyed by local defenders and Barnom had fled.

After receiving word that the Argent Mirror of Ta’Illistim would not even meet with him, the Lich King took his envoy and returned to Wehnimer’s Landing.

Vordilian, Champion of The Order of Voln, arrived in Wehnimer's Landing recently and met with fellow members of The Order to oversee the occupation of Lich's Landing. While the Champion has yet to enter the citadel itself, he has observed and approved of the status of the assault on Barnom Slim's kingdom.

Most noted in his statements, a stalwart proclamation that anyone attempting to aid Barnom Slim in defeating the warriors of Voln would be dealt with harshly on the battlefield. Also, he has asked that The Order refrain from dishonorable attempts on anyone's life if they were not in direct violation of the proclamation, regardless of their potentially misguided paths.

Many witnesses have stated that Vordilian formally declared war on Lich's Landing and will be leading an offensive effort in days to come.

Earlier this evening, the Lich King’s voice echoed across the sky, declaring to all those near Wehnimer’s Landing that they had taken aggressive action against him first, from invading his kingdom, to the Order of Voln leading raids. The lich warned that the people of Wehnimer’s had brought this upon themselves.

Motes of white light descended on the Lower Dragonsclaw, and an entire expanse of the forest withered and blackened, deforming trees and killing woodland creatures. Soon the decaying forest was filled with a number of undead creatures, from rotting giantman lumberjacks, skeletal orc archers and toothy gloom trolls, to tenebrous wraiths, dark specters and even the zombies of old Wehnimer’s militiamen.

It wasn’t long until Barnom Slim, the Lich King himself, walked among his minions and wreaked devastation on many of the town’s defenders who had come to face him and the undead. Barnom finally made his way to the town gates, released a horde of undead, and then disappeared into the forest.

While the host of undead were finally defeated, the touch of decay remains in the Lower Dragonsclaw and is filled with pools of murky black liquid.

During that time, Councilman Stephos DeArchon, the representative for the Wehnimer's Merchant's Guild arrived to inform the mayor that a number of local shopkeepers have now officially entered into protection contracts with the Brotherhood of Rooks.

The councilman also warned that there is still talk of even more merchants doing the same and that if something is not done soon, the town may find all of their shopowners lost to the Rooks.

To Mayor Walkar, or anyone who might have the competance to accomplish something in this town,

The secret siege underway by the Rooks took on an entirely new level of audacity today. It began when a Rook walked into town square and simply ran straight into me and poisoned me. I suspect I was targetted because everyone in the Landing hates intelligence. Apparently, this assault gave the Rook some level of bravery, and it or they proceeded to have a merry slaughter in town square, murdering a variety of individuals, specifically targetting those clerics and empaths who sought to aid their targets.
After this rampage, the Rook stepped into town square and began a monologue about how only the Rooks could save the town. In other words, they became yet another faction which claims that they are the ones who will save us all (what a surprise). I suspect that this Rook was not a native of Wehnimer's Landing, as it threatened to continue killing and attacking as long as the demands of the Rooks were not met. If it had been, it would know that being murdered is entertaining and exciting to Landing citizens, and they will only be encouraged. Either way, this direct assault in broad daylight has taken things to an entirely different level. Also, it touched me, and I do not care for that.
The fate of this town matters little to me, but I expect that action must be taken soon or any hope at stability will be lost.

Vordilian, Champion of Voln, has begun the assault on Lich's Landing!

Lasting nearly an hour, the first wave has brought valuable information as to the strength of the citadel's forces. Also learned, there is an assassin working for Barnom. The assassin's description remains unknown, and appears to target those who slay prominent supporters of the lich.

Vordilian stated that he would return to join in the efforts every few hours this day and evening, and hopes to learn the location of Barnom's phylactery. Members of The Order are encouraged to continue weakening the lich's forces within the citadel.

Last night Vordilian, a Champion of Voln, led an attack on the Lich King’s citadel below Wehnimer’s Landing. Shortly after that, the lich Barnom Slim and some followers met the heroes head on in the throne room. Some adventurers killed Barnom a number of times, but the lich rose up after each deadly blow. Chaos ensued as the battle raged on, until finally Barnom cursed Vordilian and dark tendrils erupted from the champion’s own flesh, tearing away at his body and eventually devouring both his corpse and soul, leaving no trace of the man behind.

In retaliation for the attack on his citadel, Barnom led an invasion into Wehnimer’s Landing where a horde of undead creatures bloodied the streets. In the end the undead were beaten back and the Lich King retreated underground.

Before he returned to his dark city, the Lich King warned, “Your people have created this conflict. You came into my kingdom, and slaughtered my citizens. You continued to allow your prized Order of Voln to raid my citadel. Was Vordilian's soul worth it? My patience is now thinner than my rotting skin, and I will suffer you no more. Your land decays around you, there is no stopping it. Struggle if you must, but know that the shadows are no longer your greatest threat."

"I am."

This afternoon, Mayor Walkar met with a number of adventurers outside of Moot Hall. There he confronted Cruxophim, who was the first to join Barnom Slim, about a conversation the prison guards saw him engage in with Drangell. After some coaxing from those present and the mayor, along with reassurance of his safety, Cruxophim informed those present that Barnom had asked him to communicate with Drangell for him, to deliver a message of a possible alliance against Wehnimer's Landing. If the source is to be trusted, then it would seem the Lich King and the Brotherhood of Rooks are looking to cooperate together in their goals.

In the meantime, Mayor Walkar has ordered additional guards and protections to be established in the prison and has begun organizing a plan to help scour the Lich's Landing, searching for the phylactery that may give the town its only chance to finally be rid of Barnom Slim.

(There is a log too)

There's a Jailbreak tonight (report), 2/2/2013

The city was awoken with the ground rumbling and the streets shaking!

Our initial reaction was that Barnom was preparing something or the rooks had hid another fault line with their digging. Once we confirmed that the quakes weren't isolated to a specific area and in fact were felt from the Lyserian Hills, to Danjirland, to Stone Valley and back again to Wehnimer's and the Under-Landing by reports across the area.

It was then that Semiera alerted that thugs were outside the bank. The grey-beaked hooded figures were all equipped with tiger claws. They were very skilled and seemed intent on maiming people during their dirty work of the night. They had a great deal of martial prowess, but had some susceptibility to powerful spell casters. A handful engaged them for some time, dispatching the figures, and some bandits before forming more cohesive defense groups.

More bandits were reported in town square southeast to which Archales remarked, "What would make them so bold?" Indeed. Four or five groups were facing bandits and such in quick skirmishes with the figures and bandits. As these appeared to be rooks several of these groups all came to the same conclusion to check on Drangell's prison. (Once we found it) We counted nine guards and nothing seemed amiss. We milled around for a bit and continued the investigation before more rook attacks began occurring and we had to re-engage them.

The attacks intensified quickly. Bandits swarmed the streets, openly, and set a small fire near the bank that was doused. Several quick thinking citizens got buckets from Moot Hall and water from the well to help speed up the firefight. Kyal and Sabran remarked this was likely a diversion. Figures were seen sulking through the streets still, but a familiar was sent back to check on the guards, but had trouble finding its way. We raced back to the prison and Sarvia had discovered the guards had been attacked and killed. Drangell was still in his cell, but we'd not be leaving him unattended again. Digging and pick strikes could be heard. We didn't wander far, but tried to ascertain their direction in the immediate prison area.

Puptilian called out for more guards if Walkar could spare them. Many stayed in the prison, but others dashed for the tunnels to cut off the diggers if possible. I checked on the guards corpses and many bore the tiger-claw marks the figures had been seen with. Maimed and shredded fatally across the neck and chest.

Dragnell let out a cackle and with a good number of people milling about to witness it the ground exploded and the Giantman's cell crumbled before us. Shouts and commotion erupted as groups tried to intercept from the tunnels and pursue through the rubble. Our group ended up jumping down into the hole after Dragnell.

We had gotten disorientated in the tunnels as it had a rolling fog throughout them. More militia corpses were down here also opening the possibility that the Prison had been compromised for some time. We did manage to find our way out to Specter Lane in the Under-Landing outside of the clothier shop. Once re-orientated we made our way through the streets to try and catch a glimpse of the now freed prisoner.

The Lichlings had gotten excited by now and each roaming band had one or two with them. Barnom could be sensed by now and we headed into the Citadel once the streets had been checked thoroughly. It seemed that his marked supporters had played a part in the bandit attacks by creating additional diversions. We set our sights on locating Barnom to see what could be gleamed from the insane lunatic. His first taunt was, "Missing something?"

We fought to his throne room where he had been holding dummy court the past few evenings. His followers were rejoicing with promises more had come to his call. Masrath's familiar warned us that the town was under attack and he quickly opened a portal. Once prepared we leaped through it to engage the returned militia zombies. Casualties had mounted during the multiple phases of the attack. We had recovered everyone and engaged most of the enemy when Barnom was spotted in the Lich Landings Town Square.

It seemed both sides had learned from the previous engagement as Barnom was coy about his new acquisition along with some new Lichlings who had come to serve him. He proclaimed his "Plan" was coming together quite nicely. After this proclamation and stated his Kingdom would be ushered in sooner than planned he waved and departed into his Citadel.

On the 4th evening of Fashanos, the Brotherhood of Rooks attacked Solhaven, setting fires outside of the bank and gemshop. When local adventurers from Solhaven, and some defenders from Wehnimer’s Landing arrived to help, bandits ambushed everyone in the streets. Among the common thugs and brigands were the grey-beaked birdmen themselves, moving in and out of the shadows of buildings and striking viciously! Solhaven townspeople reported seeing a number of bandits make off with bags of coins and gems, presumably retreating back to their underground tunnels in the north.

Shortly after the fires in Solhaven had died down, some deep black shades appeared in Wehnimer’s Landing and attacked a number of adventurers returning through the north gates. The defenders rallied again and defeated the undead creatures. After the streets had been cleared, many citizens reported seeing blood red snowflakes fluttering down from the sky, each one melting before it reached the ground.

Councilman Stephos DeArchon has announced that the Merchant’s Guild will be holding a public meeting in the late evening on the Day of the Huntress, the 8th of Fashanos. (Friday, Feb 8th.) The meeting will be ruled over by the councilman himself, inside the Chamber of Justice, and a number of local merchants will be making an appearance to discuss their apprehensions over the Brotherhood of Rooks recent alliance with the Lich King.

Townspeople and adventurers are invited to attend the public forum, but non-Guild members will be asked to be seated in the observation balcony above the Chamber.

The shopkeeper Aznell expressed his concerns, “I’m glad we’re having this meeting, and Councilman Stephos is listening to us. I finally came to terms with paying my protection contract to the Rooks. But I won’t have a single silver going to that abomination Barnom!”

The Chamber of Justice is inside of Moot Hall, go south, then go through the arch. The observation balcony is accessible via the stairs, and you can watch the activity in the Chamber from there. You simply have to GAZE, PEER, or LOOK at the “viewing area”. I’m sorry I can’t give a specific time, but I promise to give plenty of notice/messaging before anything begins.

On the eve of the 8th of Fashanos, Councilman Stephos DeArchon hosted a meeting with many local merchants of Wehnimer’s Landing in the Moot Hall’s Chamber of Justice. Over three dozen townspeople and adventurers observed from the balcony seating above. Some merchants expressed to Stephos that they were concerned that their protection contracts they had secured with the Rooks, were now aiding Barnom Slim the Lich King.

Before Stephos was able to formulate a resolution or help squelch any of the merchants’ fears, the ground began to tremble and crack. A wall of bones appeared on the balcony, obstructing the stairway for many people who tried to move to help. Suddenly, back in the Chamber of Justice, a hole appeared in the ground and Drangell climbed out. The ex-prisoner threatened the merchants that his alliance with the undead only strengthened his influence and that no contracts would be broken, and he would escalate his actions against any merchants who were still resisting.

After Drangell was attacked by some adventurers who had broken through the bone wall, a host of zombies poured up out of the hole in the ground. To demonstrate his intolerance, Drangell grabbed a merchant and tossed him to a zombie, which then proceeded to claw and devour the innocent man. Drangell was then chased down the tunnel that connected to Lich’s Landing, where he battled alongside Barnom’s undead minions against the heroes of Wehnimer’s. Drangell was killed a number of times, but his wounds healed rapidly and he rose to his feet after every attack.

Meanwhile, back up in Wehnimer’s Landing, more undead poured up through Moot Hall and into the streets, as Rooks picked off townspeople with arrows from the shadows. The conflict finally slowed when adventurers gathered outside of the Lich’s Citadel, where both Barnom and Drangell engaged in insults and banter. The encounter ended after Drangell wandered off and Barnom teleported everyone to the temporal rift out of frustration.

Late into last evening, after the streets were quiet and no longer flooded with undead, Mayor Walkar met with a number of adventurers in his office in Moot Hall. Everyone strategized on a few ways to combat both Drangell and Barnom, and more than a few heated arguments broke out between the Mayor and some of those present. The night concluded when some of Barnom’s shades appeared in the office and attacked those who had gathered.

First thing this morning, Mayor Walkar issued a stark warning to the Merchant’s Guild of Wehnimer’s Landing.

“The Brotherhood of Rooks are enemies of this town. There recent alliance with the undead should make this more apparent than ever. They terrorize our merchants into paying for protection against their own brand of violence. They are over glorified bullies with ugly masks, outside funding, and too much time on their hands.”

“To this end, I am raising the stakes in this war of loyalty. Effective immediately, all known shopkeepers who have protection contracts with the Rooks will see a drastic increase in your taxes. In addition, I will be making a list and revealing it this week to the public of all shopkeepers who loyalty now lies to these bandits. I promise you, your business will dry up. I don’t think I need to elaborate on your future struggles in trying to maintain proceeds while paying for protection and taxes.”

“I have also instructed Jenkins, our town scrivener and treasurer, to allocate all of these Rook Taxes we’re enacting to help fund additional militia protection for those shopkeepers who remain loyal to Wehnimer’s Landing. So the choice is yours.”

Aspects of Control, Part 1, 2/10/2013

Jankus was spotted outside Moot Hall in Town Square East last evening. Residents of the city had been looking for him due to recent events surrounding Barnom and his possession of the ring that belonged to the purported Lich King. Mayor Walkar was in his office and came down quickly. Jankus hesitated and was subjected to a conversation outside as a crowd gathered and he wasn't able to make up an excuse quickly enough to leave.

He was asked about the black ora ring and where it was. He nervous almost immediately and tried to casually say he lost it five days ago. Upon further questioning and a statement from Walkar that Tykel said he had seen Jankus wearing it two days ago, the gnome became nervous and kept looking in his backpack for something. After additional questioning about his odd behavior Jankus dropped the charade and removed the ring from his pack and put it on confirming he still had it.

After Walkar stated he had lied about Tykel, Jankus responded that Walkar must be receiving their messages. Walkar was heard stating lets take this conversation elsewhere before Jankus' mood changed and he drew his serrated handaxe from his weapons harness and eyed the Mayor before making the statement, "Perhaps it is time for a different course..."

He then hurled the handaxe through the crowd into Walkar's abdomen! Jankus had managed to vanish and after Walkar overcame the initial shock and pain, he was injured badly, he recognized the handaxe. It didn't take us long to put it all together as Jankus continued his attack on Walkar displaying tactics and abilities we'd seen before. I shouted, "Jankus is Barnom's assassin!"

The gnome could only be heard calling from the shadows, taunting us and Walkar with, "Watch your back, Mr. Mayor, we are watching you!" This triggered anger in the Mayor as he'd been attacked and hurt twice now, he yelled into the streets, "Alright you little bastard gnome!" The crowd pressed in to guard, protect, or just be in the way. At this Kiske warned Walkar to be calm as we had seen some extreme emotion from the Mayor lately.

Through the chaos Jankus seemed to be slipping through the shadows rather effortlessly, aided by magic or extreme skill. When he lined up his attack this time, he didn't miss. Walkar's body fell to the ground and the cities officials began shouting, "Murder, Murder, Jankus has commited murder!"

Arpelli reacted quickly and kept Walkar's soul while I dragged him to Town Square for aid. Many followed and fanned out searching for Jankus. Monax, who would later spend much of the night at Voln aiding the soon to be casualties, set upon the task of getting Walkar quickly recovered. A local, Lahlia commented, "Cannot have a dead mayor!" Indeed and Monax called upon his Arkati and quickly resurrected our fallen Mayor within minutes of his very public murder.

The Drakes under Archales had formed up their defense groups at this point anticipating combat. I did the same with those gathered in the square and we started to ensure that those fit would be with us and others would begin preparing for defense and triage. The blood red snow had started to fall as our preparations were beginning.

As this was all going on Sarvia, Kiske and others were trying to console and attend to Walkar. His armor was acting strangely again. Flashes of bright red light could be seen throughout the city centered around the Square. Sarvia was trying to sooth him telling him, ""It's all about intent, just remember that." At this though crimson veins stretched from his fingers and griped the Mayor's waraxe, showing signs of his power. Shortly after he walked off to the northwest and we lost sight of him until later.

We managed to catch word of Jankus chastising Cruxophim nearby. He was telling him, "I've avenged your death many times, Cruxophim..." A few gathered commented we should kill Cruxophim to draw out Jankus, but it was fortunately met with many more giving them odd looks or flatly telling them no such thing will be happening. I will withhold their names, but it was not suitable conduct of civilized individuals, even in our frontier town.

The snow had intensified by now and then spheres of white light descended on the town with sections of South Ring Road transforming into a swamp-like fog of the same murky black pools that are present in the Trollfang. When we went to investigate the animated hands of victims would grab us from the water periodically or slap at our legs. They didn't manage to harm anyone badly, but it slowed us down, and then the zombies came.

Aspects of Control, Part 1, 2/10/2013

After the pools bubbled up along South Ring road, the visions started, atleast we believed them to be to demoralize us.

Townspeople run into their homes, locking doors and closing windows as a thick white fog rolls through the streets.

In the streets, militiamen begin shouting at each other in confusion! Soon some of the guards are embroiled in an all-out struggle, half of them turning on the others and running them through with their blades!

Ravashaak quickly calmed the group by putting this into perspective. Our group, the Drakes, and others had strong communication and they didn't seem to have much effect. Barnom must have felt the same so he sent in the fog to cover his zombies.

Jankus was spotted around town. North Gate, a brief comment at West Gate to us, then Moot Hall. He stayed around Moot Hall during most of the attacks. A few questioned him, but he seemed more delighted in haggering everyone there with taunts and sarcasm while the streets were thick with zombie militiamen.

The casulties began mounting. A few from just being overwhelmed and some from not anticipating the strength our the enemy. Our defense forces were in good shape throughout, but bystanders or those caught unaware suffered. The thickness of the fighting lead to some getting seperated occasionally and then overwhelmed by the sheer number of zombies in the south of the city. As mentioned Monax was busy at Voln, near overwhelmed with corpses. Town Square reported similar numbers of dead. Our group fogged multiple times to Voln with corpses, sometimes as many as three or four. Arpelli did a great job of bringing individual dead to Town Square for that triage.

We came across Walkar at this point. He was engaging the Undead on his own. He commented, "They won't touch me.", but I grabbed hold of him to ensure his safety and we cleared the streets with him. He was continually in a rage, smashing the militia like ragdolls. We tried to calm him and when the zombies had been dispatched in the area he began twitching. We told him Jankus was in Moot Hall and reported to the others he was safe with us. He then wobbled and nearly fainted. He commented that he was, ""Very...hungry." and tried to excuse himself. Perivan noted, "I don't think we can feed you what you need." Walkar had limped off at this point. The question was posed to me later in the evening "Do you think Walkar is feeding on flesh?" I had to think about it at length, but I gave my honest "No" answer. I think that animals can sustain him, for now. If he is indeed feeding on blood.

The Drakes were joined at this point and fighting was confined to a smaller area on South Ring road. Once everything was dispatched and the zombies ceased we caught up with those at Moot Hall.

Information was exchanged among the groups. We also shared the events of the night with all those who had missed pieces or didn't hear everything going on to be sure as many knew what happened with Jankus especially. Jankus had slinked off sometime during this, but we wanted to ensure we had all seen and witnessed as accurately as possible everything that occured. We seemed to all be in agreement and folks started departing the Hall to rest, recover, or return to normallacy.

Then Drangell was sensed....

Meanwhile, across town, 2/12/2013

Late last evening, as Arpelli was on her way to turn in for the evening, some shadowy figures came into the Inn, knocked her out and dragged her off to an unfamiliar location. It appeared to be an undiscovered nest, but the surroundings seemed somewhat familiar, like the areas in the existing Burrows.

After awaking from the daze, Drangell appeared, and shortly thereafter, a very young boy escorted by rooks entered the room. Drangell is apparently recruiting them very young -- this child had no problem taking Drangell's dagger and using it to repeatedly stab and cut Arpelli - right arm, left arm, stomach... For such a small child, he packed a punch with that sharp blade. She eventually fell unconscious and was deposited somewhere in town, where her friends and other townspeople came rushing to her rescue.

♫ Arpelli ♫

We had a bad night, 2/17/2013

Two nights ago, during the invasion, myself, Ewin, Sarvia, Puptilian and several others were patrolling town. While on South Ring Road, several shadowy figures arrived, hit me over the head, tied me up and dragged me off…somewhere. Shortly afterwards they grabbed Ewin as well. We were both immobilized and unable to do anything but speak, or yell a bit in my case.

Drangell was there and Jankus showed up soon afterwards. There were also several Rooks in attendance, hooded and masked as usual. Drangell claimed to be seeking revenge on Ewin for his part as a witness during the interrogation of the rook several weeks ago. They began cutting me, initially on my face, then arms. When they realized that an empath may not be the most satisfying torture victim, they decided to payback Ewin directly. They cut off one of his ears, used a hammer and nail to remove his hand rather slowly, and an acidic potion of some sort to..dissolve one of his legs.

Then, a small human boy stepped out of the shadows. He seemed unsure and nervous as first, but pulled out a hammer all the same. Drangell told him , "Go ahead lad, finish yer final step." Also, "Embrace yer new future, be emboldened by justice."

The boy then shouted "You let them kill my dad! MY DAD!", and rushed forward and hit Ewin in the head with hammer, killing him instantly. He didn't stop hitting Ewin for a while, even though Ewin was quite dead.

He wasn't the same nervous boy after that, instead his eyes were cold and barren. Jankus congratulated the boy, telling him "Well done!".

The Rooks then grabbed Ewin's body and myself and dumped us back in town, in Erebor Square where many other townsfolk found us and helped get Ewin back up and offered support. Through it all, there were many thoughts of support and encouragement, and even though at times we couldn't respond, we heard it all. Ewin and I were very grateful for it, thank you everyone, your support and strength were invaluable.

That was the end of it. Drangell and Jankus really didn't have much to say that offered any information as to their plans, motivations or anything about Barnom. Jankus, however, did say one thing that has stuck with me.

Speaking to you, Jankus exclaims, "Believe me, I could slaughter a hundred people in this Town and offer my fantastic Gnomery services and every one of them would come crawling!"

Zyndur, the Nalfein rogue has brokered a deal with Mayor Walkar, allowing his band of Nalfein mercenaries to help add some additional protection to some local shops and areas of Wehnimer's Landing, enhancing the town's militia. Zyndur went on to explain that they would show the Rooks who were the true masters of stealth.

Meanwhile, a new area of town, along West Ring Road, transformed into a macabre version as the cobblestones blackened and twisted and the overwhelming stench of decay settled in. Murky black pools appeared as well, heralding in the transformation.

Citizens and adventurers have also reported seeing the undead form of Rooks and bandits occassionally appearing down in the Burrow Way and mentioned the Lich King praised his new re-usable army.
