Character customization refers to different ways characters themselves can be individually customized.
Character Features
- Main article: Character feature
The most visible aspect of character customization includes customizing, or altering, character features. Character features can be changed at feature-altering merchants. They can also be changed via automated services at the New Look Feature Pavilion, Shear Delight, or Bayview Villa, where they can be ordered a la carte from a list of pre-written options. Some pay events and festivals also have a shop or NPC that sells pre-written feature options.
See the character feature article for detailed information on what feature fields exist and how they can be altered. Examples of pre-written feature options can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
There are many item scripts that provide options to temporarily or permanently change character features. See the feature altering item scripts category for a list of item scripts that offer this as an option.
Tattoos and piercings are separate systems from character features, however they can also be customized. Tattoos can only be customized by merchants who work on tattoos, however piercing jewelry can be altered by most alteration merchants.
Signature Verbs
- Main article: Signature verb
Signature verbs are unique or otherwise different ways that a character can express actions via verbs. Pre-written signature verbs are available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor. Signature verbs are activated via SIGANTURE {verb}. SIGNATURE by itself lists what signature verbs are available to that character.
Signature verbs are essentially extremely flexible ACTs unique to a given character in that they omit the parentheses normally attached to an ACT. This permits a GM to craft a totally personalized "verb" for you when creating a fully custom signature verb.
Examples of pre-written signature verbs can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
Swears
- Main article: Custom swear
A custom swear is a unique or otherwise different swear that your character has access to with the SWEAR verb. Certain merchants can give you a swear customized to your character. Pre-written custom swears are also available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor. Custom swears are activated by typing SWEAR MINE {swear}.
Examples of pre-written custom swears can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
Spell Prep Phrases
- Main article: Custom spell prep
A custom spell prep(aration) provides unique or otherwise different messaging when a character PREPAREs a spell to cast. This includes when using INCANT to both PREPARE and CAST a spell with a single command. The custom spell prep replaces the standard messaging that a character has access to and changes it to something else. Characters may have up to 50 messages to toggle between using the PREPARE PHRASES command. Certain merchants can give you a spell prep customized to your character. Pre-written custom spell preps are also available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor.
Note: A custom spell prep encompasses only the messaging associated with preparing a spell; it does not change how the spell looks when it is cast, including the effects a spell might make. Those messages that appear after the spell is cast will not show up or be impacted by PREP PHRASES. Advanced spell customizations impact the cast spell itself, such as with custom bolt messaging or custom manna bread. See each service's article for the rules of that service.
Examples of pre-written custom spell preps can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
Advanced Spell Customizations
- Main article: Advanced spell customization
Advanced spell customizations provide unique or otherwise different messaging when a character CASTs a spell. This includes when using INCANT to both PREPARE and CAST a spell with a single command. Similar to custom spell preps, advanced spell customizations provide different effects depending on the spell cast. Certain merchants can give you advanced spell messaging customized to your character. Pre-written advanced spell customizations are also available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor.
For bolt spells, advanced spell customizations provided different bolt messaging when the spell is cast at a target. For other spells, the advanced spell customization changes what the magical effect created by the spell looks like, such as with a new plant summoned when using Tangle Weed (610), or different food with its own flavor messaging when using Manna (203), or a unique portal appearance with its own open/close messaging when using Familiar Gate (930).
Some spells, such as Fire Spirit (111), may have different types of spell customizations applied. For this spell, its attack bolt messaging when casting the spell at a target is one type of advanced spell customization. The other type is the description of a firework made when the spell is cast without a target. Having a custom firework will only impact the spell when the end result is a firework. A custom firework will not impact the bolt attack form of the spell.
Many advanced spell customizations are part of the Player Customization System, which is managed via the CUSTOM verb. Not all spells are compatible with the Player Customization System. Those spells that are not managed via CUSTOM can only have one set of messaging at any given time. Applying new custom messaging to spells not part of the Player Customization System will overwrite the previous messaging available, whether it was default or another advanced spell customization.
Note: Advanced spell customizations encompasses only the messaging associated with the results of casting a spell; it does not change how the spell looks when it is prepared. Custom spell preps impact how messaging appears when a spell is prepared and before it is cast, including if the spell is just prepared and never cast.
Examples of pre-written advanced spell customizations can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
Combat Maneuver Messaging
- Main article: Custom CMAN messaging
Custom CMAN messaging, also called custom combat maneuver messaging, provides unique or otherwise different messaging when a character uses a combat maneuver skill. Custom CMAN messaging debuted at Ebon Gate 2024 as a trove win. Pre-written options have since appeared at pay events.
Custom CMAN messaging is part of the Player Customization System, which is managed via the CUSTOM verb.
Examples of pre-written custom CMAN messaging can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
Logphrases
- Main article: Custom logphrases
Custom logphrases replace the standard logphrase message set for when a character logs on or off of the game. Logphrases are enabled by default. If turned off, they must be enabled via FLAG or SET LogPhrase ON in order for custom logphrases to be visible. Pre-written logphrase customizations are available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor. A character can only have one logphrase message set.
Examples of pre-written custom logphrases can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
Death Messaging
- Main article: Death messaging
When a character dies, death messaging is broadcast to the entire game announcing the character's death. This messaging is sent to the Deaths Window, if open, or to the Story Window if the Death Window is not open. Certain holidays or events will also offer themed death messaging. Death messaging is enabled by default, but it can be disabled via FLAG or SET SilenceDeath ON to prevent broadcasting it to the game.
Death messaging customizations can be unique or otherwise different from standard messaging when a character dies in a given realm. Pre-written death messaging is available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor. Death messaging options are part of the Player Customization System and are managed via the CUSTOM verb. Death customizations override the default messaging for a given realm. Death messaging must be enabled ON in FLAG/SET in order to be visible.
Examples of pre-written custom death messaging can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
Urchin Guide Messaging
- Main article: Urchin guide customizations
Urchin guide customizations provide unique or otherwise different movement messaging when using the Urchin Guide system. As a rare service, you may have the opportunity to urchin guide messaging that is unique and custom to your character. Pre-written urchin guide customizations are available at various festivals and pay events. Urchin guide customizations are accessed via URCHIN MESSAGING.
Examples of pre-written custom urchin guide messaging can be viewed in the character customizations category and its sub-categories.
