Knitting needles are part of the knitting system. Knitting needles can be used with one or more skeins of knitting yarn to create a knitted item, which includes a variety of clothing and containers. Needles come in both single pattern and variable pattern forms. Variable pattern knitting needles can be further unlocked to add additional pattern or design options. Knitting needles were first sold aboard the Wavedancer in 2005 in the Needles That Knit shop alongside knitting yarn. Needles sold there were single pattern knitting needles, each capable of making a single type of knitted item. They were color-coded to indicate what item each made. Variable pattern knitting needles capable of making different types of knitted items and stitch styles were originally considered a raffle or auction tier version of the script. Significant changes have been made to the knitting system in the years since, expanding the options available to all knitting needles and making variable pattern knitting needles much more accessible. Single pattern knitting needles are sold year-round in Mist Harbor's Knit It shop with patterns from the General pattern set. Single pattern knitting needles with other patterns are sometimes sold at other events. In addition to the needles, Knit It sells knitting yarn. Variable pattern knitting needles have been sold in the Purls Of Wisdom shop at Rumor Woods alongside other knitting tools. Unlock certificates to add additional designs or knitted item options to variable pattern knitting needles are sometimes sold at festivals and pay events, with different options available at different events. See the main knitting system article for instructions on how to knit. Single Pattern Knitting NeedlesSingle pattern knitting needles are capable of creating only one type of knitted item out of knitting yarn. Single pattern knitting needles are sold year-round in Mist Harbor's Knit It shop with patterns from the General pattern set. Single pattern knitting needles with other patterns are sometimes sold on at events, such as the needles for just cobbling uppers or just cobbling trim sold in Purls of Wisdom at Rumor Woods. Unlike variable pattern knitting needles, single pattern knitting needles cannot be upgraded via unlock certificates. They are generally priced much lower because of this inability to unlock them further. They can only knit items with the default stitch style of "knitted". They can knit with multiple types of yarn, allowing for knitted items crafted with two types of yarn in the appearance, or "multihued" items when three or more types of yarn are used.
You analyze the knitting needles and sense that the item is largely free from merchant alteration restrictions, but the creator has stated that "The item has restrictions on changing the noun."
The creator has also provided the following information:
These are knitting needles that you can knit yarn with to create a pair of socks. They may be freely altered as long as they remain knitting needles. They can have a long description, but not a show description.
Usage:
PUSH - Add yarn to the needles
DIP - Knit a row
PULL - Remove a row or remove yarn from needles
CUT - Remove yarn from needles
FLIP - Change order of two yarn colors
SHAKE - Give up on the knitting project
You get no sense of whether or not the needles may be further lightened.
Variable Pattern Knitting NeedlesVariable pattern knitting needles work just like single pattern knitting needles, however they have the ability to cycle between different types of knitting projects. The extra verbs allow the needles to be manipulated to change the project pattern type and cosmetic options called styles and designs. Variable pattern knitting needles were historically called auction or raffle quality needles, however they are now much more accessible. By default, variable pattern knitting needles have access to the General patterns set and the default set of stitch styles. This includes the older auction quality knitting needles as well as new variable pattern knitting needles sold at pay events, such as those sold in the Purls of Wisdom shop at Rumor Woods. Unlocks to add more pattern sets and designs can be applied a la carte, allowing greater freedom in choosing which options to add. See the available pattern, style, and design options below.

These are knitting needles that you can knit yarn with. These are variable-pattern knitting needles that can be cycled through different patterns. They may be freely altered as long as they remain knitting needles. They can have a long description, but not a show description.
Usage:
TURN - Toggle between patterns. TURN needles TO {pattern} to skip to a specific pattern.
PROD - Toggle between styles
PUSH - Add yarn to the needles
DIP - Knit a row
PULL - Remove a row or remove yarn from needles
CUT - Remove yarn from needles
FLIP - Change order of two yarn colors
SHAKE - Give up on the knitting project
PEER - Set mount type for mount accessories
PONDER - Cycle through the available unlocked design styles
WHISPER - Select one of the unlocked design styles. Syntax is WHISPER MY witchwood needles {design}. You may need to PROD the needles to make sure the style is chosen for your project.
These needles have the following patterns unlocked. You can TURN the needles TO <pattern> to skip to your chosen option:
General: scarf, muffler, hat, socks, mittens, gloves, stockings, shawl, bag, pouch, sweater, satchel.
Trukt
Containers: apron, basket, backpack, cape, carryall, clutch, purse, wrap.
Clothing: dress, earmuffs, leggings, headband, overdress, pants, petticoat, skirt, undershirt, vest, snood, hairtie.
Cobbling: cobbling trim, cobbling upper.
Weapon Wraps
Mount accessories: headband, foreleg wraps, hind leg wraps, scarf, mount blanket, capelet, booties, booties, hat.
Pup Tent accessories: rug, carpet.
Picnic Napkins: napkin.
Clothing and Containers: cloak, coat, jacket, robe, tote, gown, shirt, sundress, tunic, brooch, armband.
You get no sense of whether or not the needles may be further lightened.
PatternsPatterns determine what the final knitted item will be. Single pattern knitting needles only have access to one pattern for knitting. Variable pattern knitting needles are capable of cycling through multiple patterns and by default have access to the General pattern set. Additional pattern sets can be added to variable pattern knitting needles via unlock certificates to expand what options they have. Some pattern sets include just one type of pattern while other pattern sets include multiple patterns. Different certificates add different pattern sets, and some certificates are only sold at certain festivals or events. Patterns are cycled via PROD. A pattern can also be selected directly by clicking on it in the needles' ANALYZE readout, if hyperlinks are enabled. The pattern cannot be changed mid-project. Note: When knitting mount adornments from Mount Accessories pattern set, the type of mount for the pattern can be cycled via PEER. Some mount adornment patterns have restrictions on what types of mounts can wear them. For example, the tortoise can't wear a mount blanket, and the two different booties options can only be worn by a beetle or a spider. Mounts may have different terms for the same worn location; the hind leg wraps pattern is suitable for both a horse's "hind legs" and a lizard's "rear leg". Each pattern has its own requirement for how much knitting yarn it takes to complete.
StylesVariable pattern knitting needles have access to styles. Styles are different types of knitting stitches and appear as one of the final project's adjectives, such as "knitted", "cable-knit" or "crocheted". Single pattern knitting needles have access to the "knitted" style only and cannot change their stitch style. Some stitch styles require multiple yarn types. This is achieved by beginning the project with one yarn, knitting at least one row, using CUT to remove the first yarn, adding the second yarn, and then continuing the project with the new yarn. Once the second yarn has had at least two rows knitted, the order in which the two yarns appear can be swapped via FLIP so long as the project is not yet complete. If a third yarn is added to the project, the knitting project's yarn becomes "multihued". Stitch styles are cycled via PROD. They cannot be selected individually and must be cycled to set one. Stitch styles can be cycled mid-project only if one type of yarn is present. Once a second yarn has been added to the needles, the current stitch style is locked in and can no longer be changed unless the current project is completed or abandoned. The exception to this is if the second yarn is removed via PULL, which reverts the current project back to the single yarn type. Multi-yarn stitch styles can be previewed via PROD only if there is no yarn on the needles. If yarn is on the needles, the readout will only preview what the project will look like with a single yarn type. Multi-yarn stitch styles will imparting the default "knitted" stitch style to the knitted item if just one yarn type is present even though a multi-stitch style has been selected. After adding a second type of yarn to the needles, a multi-yarn pattern will show up with the LOOK NEEDLES project preview. Once a second type of yarn has been added to the needles and two rows knitted with it, the stitch style can no longer be cycled no matter how the project is manipulated. Stitch styles always cycle in the same order. While the multi-yarn stitch styles can't be easily previewed mid-project, it is possible to count between the different visible stitch styles when cycling via PROD to pick the desired multi-yarn stitch style after starting a project. A multi-yarn project's stitch style should be selected at the start of the project due to these difficulties in previewing and changing which stitch style is selected. Variable pattern knitting needles with the expanded designs set unlocked have access to two additional stitch styles which reference a design, if one has been set. If no design has been set, or if "none" has been selected from the design options, they also default to "knitted" for the stitch style. These design-specific stitch styles are intended to be used with a design. Some patterns use the word "knit" instead of "knitted". This is unique to that individual pattern. For example, when knitting a pair of socks, the style options cycle between "knit", "knit striped", "knit chevron-patterned", etc. Otherwise, all style options are the same as listed below.
DesignsDesigns are an additional unlock available for variable pattern knitting needles that adds a very lengthy assortment of designs that can be used on knitting projects. There is only one Designs set unlock, and it unlocks all available design options. The Designs set unlock has been sold at the Purls of Wisdom shop at Rumor Woods. A design can be set by either using WHISPER NEEDLES {DESIGN} or by clicking on the desired design, if hyperlinks are enabled. Unlocking designs also unlocks two design-specific styles which are intended to feature them. When first setting a design for a project, the style automatically updates to use the "knitted design-patterned" style in almost all circumstances. It can be cycled to the next style, "knitted design-motif", via PROD. If a design has already been set and the style cycled to "knitted design-motif", selecting a new design option will not change the style and it will remain on "knitted design-motif". As long as a design is set, both "knitted design-patterned" and "knitted design-motif" will display as part of the PROD messaging. If no design is currently set, then they will preview as just "knitted" when cycling between styles. Designs can be changed mid-project including to "none" if a design is no longer desired. This is true for all in-process projects. If a design is changed for a multi-yarn project that has had its stitch style locked by adding a second yarn, the knitting project will change to "knitted design-patterned" for its stitch style (or just "knitted" if "none" is selected for the design type). This is the only way a multi-yarn project can have its style modified after it has been locked by adding a second yarn. Designs are arranged in themed groups. Groups can be previewed via PONDER, which will cycle between the groups available and list all designs for each group. Each group includes the final option of "none" which, if chosen, clears the current design if one has been set.
