The Papermaker is an item found in the shop In Print Condition on the Isle of Ornath's shopping center, Agora Promenade.
The Papermaker is a highly scripted crafting tool that can make paper and paper products. It was first introduced in 2022 during Rings of Lumnis, where it was first sold in the In Print Condition shop on the Isle of Ornath's shopping center, Agora Promenade for 350,000 silvers. Since 2025, it is now available only in the Rumor Woods shop named Enlightened Pages for raikhen.

The Papermaker requires bark, water, and charges to function. Bark is chopped into pulp as the base material for paper products. Water, which is used to turn the bark into pulp, can be added manually with plain water or magically via Holy Bolt (306) or Minor Water (903). Charges can be increased by putting silver wands into the box or by casting Minor Shock (901).
It was introduced in 5122.

Paper can be dyed by adding alchemy dye or cobbling dye. Dyer's tent dye will need to be converted to alchemy dye first by visiting the dyer and using ORDER BOTTLE while holding the dye in hand. If a dye is not present, the paper item will default to "white" for its color.
Note: The mechanism can also be charged by casting Minor Shock (901) at it. It may also be able to be charged via elemental cores.

Higher tier unlocks expand what can be added to the Papermaker, such as perfumes, wax, and specialty natural fibers for certain paper types, in addition to expanding paper and paper items it can make. The Papermaker has had a number of expansions and updates since it first debuted, including the addition of more tiers capable of creating new types of paper items. Its Tier 8 and Tier 9 unlocks were announced as its final update and were released at Rumor Woods in 2026.

At Tier 5, the Papermaker gains the ability to make envelopes compatible with the mail system. Envelopes are capable of using Papermaker article options but not noun options; the noun will always be "envelope". They can use a dye to change the default color. They do not support perfume added via the Papermaker. Envelopes can only hold one item.

Whisper now supports "envelope" as the paper type option for envelopes.

It does not support perfume added via the Papermaker.

By adding a standard candle to the papermaker, you can store 10 doses of wax, which is required to make Food Grade paper. Specialty scripted candles will not work. Food Grade paper can be used to store a variety of food items, be turned into a bag, and supports written notes. That process is outlined on the Food Grade paper article.

Whisper now supports "butcher" as the paper type option for butcher paper.

|tier=Tier 7 - Natural Paper <!-- REQUIRED: Must be entered as Tier # or Tree (Name) -->
|itemsummary= <!-- Brief explanation of what this tier does, if any. -->
At Tier 7, the Papermaker gains the ability to make natural paper, which can be either stationery paper or mail paper. Due to how natural paper is designed, it cannot change the article or noun; it will always preview as "a sheaf of (color) (natural paper noun)". It can use a dye to change its default color, which will appear as "(color)-tinted". It can also support perfume added via the Papermaker.

Note: There is a bug that can allow a set article to be present on the final paper product made as long as a dye is also used, overwriting the default of "a sheaf of" for the article field. This appears to be a bug as the natural paper created begins with "a sheaf of" if no dye is present. In all cases, the GLANCE preview will not display the currently set article.

By FEEDing certain organic material to your papermaker you can create very specific paper types. It will store four uses of the natural fiber added, up to a maximum of 100. Only one type of natural fiber can be stored at a given time; you cannot add "birch bark" if your mechanism already has "alder bark" set as its natural fiber type. Natural paper options are as follows:
* Bark produces (bark type) amate, and the type of tree the bark was obtained from (if present) will always display.
* Cane produces bagasse paper.
* Cotton boll produces rag paper.
* Fronds produce (frond adjective) paper, carrying over the adjective of the frond added.
* Reed or Sedge produce textured papyrus.
* Roses produce naevela.
Whisper now supports "natural-w" as the paper type option for natural stationery paper and "natural-m" for natural mail paper.

By adding a candle (any common candle will do) to the papermaker, you store 10 doses of wax and can turn a piece of paper into Butcher Paper.

Butcher Paper can be used to store a variety of food items.

Additionally, you can apply fletching glue to the paper and turn it into a waxed bag. Bags can be used to hide your bottles when you want to drink from them, or to store other foods.

Papermaker Awards can have their appearance customized after they have been made, utilizing other materials such as a ribbon and an ore. That process is outlined on the Papermaker Awards article.
Lastly, you can also write small notes on the butcher paper and the bags. Once you do this, it will change the LONG description of your butcher paper to include the note. You can then write on it again for a longer note.

Whisper now supports "award" as the paper type option for award ribbons.

Papermakers have a hard-coded show that cannot be changed:
Thin and flat, the small machine resembles a slightly oversized cigar box with lacewood panels on all sides. On each of the short, flat sides is a plaque with tiny instructions and filigreed label frames, one displaying "a piece of" and the other stating "declaration." A third frame on one of the longer sides reads "writing" and sits amid bronze toggles, dials, switches, buttons, a window, and two glass tubes; both that are empty. The final long side has a pull handle of round metal that provides access to some sort of drawer, and the lid is decorated with a woodburned dahlia design.

Analyze

The Papermaker was created by the Order of the Lumnasi Viragos on the Isle of Ornath.

The mechanism will create paper if given the proper materials to do so.

Basic Papermaking Instructions

Person quickly pushes a silver wand into a channel on a glossy violet haon mechanism, generating a brief mechanical sound. She holds it there for several seconds, and as soon as a light flashes, Person pulls the wand out once more.
Add bark as a required material. Add a silver wand for required charges.
TOUCH You tap on a glossy violet haon mechanism, causing it to chug and whirr with a loud mechanical sound. A little flash of heat and the discharge of static electricity lets you know that you have created a wax-dotted nacreous indigo brochure. Person taps a few buttons on her violet haon mechanism, causing it to chug and whirr with a loud mechanical sound. The mechanism flashes briefly with wavering heat and then discharges a bit of static into the air.
Create the designed paper item based on the current settings. Up to five items can be made before the retrieval compartment is full and the paper has to be removed via PUSH. Settings are preserved between uses as long as materials and charges are available.

Tier 2 - Mail Paper

At Tier 2, the Papermaker gains the ability to make mail paper. Mail paper is capable of using Papermaker article and noun options. It can use a dye to change its default color. It can also support perfume added via the Papermaker.

Perfume can now be added via POUR. Only one dose of perfume can be stored at a given time; it will need to be re-added with each paper item made utilizing perfume. The abbreviated perfume scent (which can be previewed via SMELLing the perfume bottle) is applied to the paper item created. Depending on the end product, perfume may or may not be an option as part of its creation.

Usage

Verb First Third
POUR {PERFUME} IN {BOX} With measured practice, you dispense a single dose of dark garnet bottle into your violet haon mechanism. The scent of incense and exotic spices, redolent and ineffable, layered in an intoxicating haze over the sensual press of lily, rose, amber, and plum musk rises in the air. SPIN Spinning a dial, you change the image that appears in the tiny window from "memoir" to "memorandum". n/a
Cycles through any noun options available for the current paper item type.
TINKER Tinkering with some of the toggles on the side of your violet haon mechanism, you see a small window on the side change from "writing" to "mailing". n/a
Cycles through paper types available. Can also select directly via WHISPER (requires Tier 3). Additional unlocks add more options for paper types.
TURN Turning a gear on the side of your violet haon mechanism, you see a small window on the side change from "a jewel-toned" to "a lace-cut". n/a
Cycles through any article options available for the current paper item type.

Tier 3 - Postcards

At Tier 3, the Papermaker gains the ability to make Papermaker's Postcards, which have stock descriptions depending on your location when you make them. Due to how postcards are designed, they cannot change their article or noun, nor can they use dyes; they will always be "a painted (location) postcard". They can support perfume added via the Papermaker.

In addition, the ability to use WHISPER to directly select options becomes available, which can be used instead of manually cycling through available options. As the Papermaker is further unlocked, the available options for WHISPER expands to include those additional paper types and related options.

Usage

Verb Option First Third
WHISPER {BOX} ARTICLE {#} Whispering quietly to the violet haon mechanism, you notice a small window on the side change from "a lace-cut" to "a wine-stained" as the device complies with your wishes. n/a
NOUN {#} Whispering quietly to the violet haon mechanism, you notice a small window on the side change from "voucher" to "brochure" as the device complies with your wishes. n/a
{PAPER TYPE} Whispering quietly to the violet haon mechanism, you notice a small window on the side change from "writing" to "postcard" as the device complies with your wishes. n/a
Shortcut for selecting options that can be cycled. Article # refers to the list of article options and Noun # refers to the list of noun options. Paper type refers to the end product type, such as "writing" for stationery paper, "mailing" for mail paper, and "postcard" for Papermaker's Postcard. Additional unlocks add more options for paper types.

Tier 4 - Bouquet Paper

At Tier 4, the Papermaker gains the ability to make Bouquet Paper. Due to how bouquet paper is designed, it cannot change the article or noun; it will always be "a piece of (color) bouquet paper". However, it can use a dye to change its default color. It does not support perfume added via the Papermaker.

Up to 10 different kinds of foraged items can be added to Bouquet Paper. A ribbon can also be added, changing the way it is bound. Once completed, it can be turned into a special bouquet. That process is outlined on the Bouquet Paper article.

Whisper now supports "bouquet" as the paper type option for bouquet paper.

Tier 5 - Envelopes

At Tier 5, the Papermaker gains the ability to make envelopes compatible with the mail system. Envelopes are capable of using Papermaker article options but not noun options; the noun will always be "envelope". They can use a dye to change the default color. They do not support perfume added via the Papermaker. Envelopes can only hold one item.

Whisper now supports "envelope" as the paper type option for envelopes.

Tier 6 - Butcher Paper

At Tier 6, the Papermaker gains the ability to make Food Grade paper (butcher paper). Due to how Food Grade paper is designed, it cannot change the article or noun; it will always be "a piece of (color) butcher paper". However, it can it use dyes.

Usage

Verb First Third
PUT {CANDLE} IN {BOX} Depressing a button, you cause a small plate to appear on the side of your violet haon mechanism. You place a tapered white ceremonial candle on the plate, depressing a lever as you do. Within moments, the little plate turns red with heat, causing the candle to melt. As the first drops of wax threaten to spill over the plate, a funnel forms in the edge of the plate, directing the melted wax into a warm cylinder. Once the candle is completely melted, the plate retracts inside, taking the wick with it. Person fiddles with her violet haon mechanism and places a tapered white ceremonial candle upon a plate on its side. Within seconds, the candle melts, filling a small vertical tube.
Add a standard candle as an optional material for wax.

Tier 7 - Natural Paper

 • Bark produces (bark type) amate, and the type of tree the bark was obtained from (if present) will always display.
 • Cane produces bagasse paper.
 • Cotton boll produces rag paper.
 • Fronds produce (frond adjective) paper, carrying over the adjective of the frond added.
 • Reed or Sedge produce textured papyrus.
 • Roses produce naevela.
Whisper now supports "natural-w" as the paper type option for natural stationery paper and "natural-m" for natural mail paper.

Usage

Verb First Third
CLEAN Opening the glass-paned receptacle on the side of your violet haon mechanism, you run a finger through it and clear any stored organic material, disposing of it nearby. Person takes a moment to clear the glass-paned receptacle on the side of her violet haon mechanism.
Remove a previously added added natural fiber.
FEED You open the glass-paned receptacle on the side of the mechanism and feed a strip of silver thanot bark into it. Person opens the glass-paned receptacle on the side of the mechanism and feeds a strip of silver thanot bark into it.
Add an eligible foraged item as a natural fiber.

Tier 8 - Treat Box

At Tier 8, the Papermaker gains the ability to make Papermaker Treat Boxes. Due to how Papermaker Treat Boxes are designed, they cannot change the article or noun, nor can they use dyes via Papermaker; they will always be "a small treat box". They also cannot support perfume added via the Papermaker.

Papermaker Treat Boxes can have their appearance customized after they have been made, utilizing other materials such as dyes and a ribbon. That process is outlined on the Papermaker Treat Box article.

Whisper now supports "box" as the paper type option for treat boxes.

Tier 9 - Award Ribbon

At Tier 9, the Papermaker gains the ability to make Papermaker Awards. Due to how Papermaker Awards are designed, they cannot change the article or noun, nor can they use dyes via Papermaker; they will always be "a simple award" when created. They also cannot support perfume added via the Papermaker.

Papermaker Awards can have their appearance customized after they have been made, utilizing other materials such as a ribbon and an ore. That process is outlined on the Papermaker Awards article.

Whisper now supports "award" as the paper type option for award ribbons.

Additional Information

Altering

Papermakers can only have long description alterations only. They can have several components customized by any merchant willing to work on them, which are referenced in the second part of its ANALYZE.
