Aivren may be loosely based on the Latin root [https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/avis#Latin "avis"] for "bird", but its precise correspondence is not clear. The aivren is mentioned in the [[Legends of the Elven Nations]] document in the context of a wizard shapeshifting a sylvan girl, though this premise with the time scales given seems apocryphal as the aivren have only been known to exist inside the Rift. They are not, however, [[extraplanar]] creatures. |

Leathery, ochre wings extending as wide as a giantman is tall, the aivren wheels and swoops with amazing dexterity. The aivren flies low over the landscape, snapping up anything remotely edible in its long, pointed beak or sharp, descending claws. Charcoal grey on the underbelly and a dusky ochre on the back, its speed often surprises its foes, allowing the aivren to strike the death blow before the opponent can react.
Hunting strategies
Aivren are the only thing normally on Plane 3 that can be Sacrificed for mana, which is easily set up with two casts of Pain (711) and one cast of Mana Disruption (702), possibly with an additional Mind Jolt (706). They cannot tend themselves and carry no treasure, so they will eventually bleed out and can be used as blood batteries for Blood Burst (701). Their swats will push your stance down if you do not pay attention.
Other information
- Aivren employ the wing swat creature maneuver common to flying creatures. The wing swat can change a target's stance as well as stack roundtime on the target. This can be deadly if combined with a n'ecare knockdown and multiple creatures or AS spikes.
An aivren swoops down over you, buffeting you with its wings! One of the aivren's wings swats the side of your head with a stinging blow, and you reel as stars appear before your eyes! Roundtime: 32 sec
- The aivren can claw at you twice in the same attack. With more than one in the room this can impact DS.
- Aivren will also be stunned by the wandering "swirling voids", and they are attacked by the Vvrael warlocks.
Behind the Scenes
Aivren may be loosely based on the Latin root "avis" for "bird", but its precise correspondence is not clear. The aivren is mentioned in the Legends of the Elven Nations document in the context of a wizard shapeshifting a sylvan girl, though this premise with the time scales given seems apocryphal as the aivren have only been known to exist inside the Rift. They are not, however, extraplanar creatures.
