The Elanthian Journal, an in-game news publication, regularly ran updates about the progress of the Griffin Sword Saga. Some of the news items in the Elanthian Journal were written by staff, such as those by NPCs Maluverre Sil'Andruthile or Sendarel Akruthos. Other news items published were player-written, with or without attribution to a player character author. The distinction between NPC and PC author was never explicitly stated in the Elanthian Journal.
The Elanthian Journal went on a hiatus following edition #10, which was published in December, 2002, and Edition #11, which was published over a year later in January, 2004, which led to a significant gap in storyline coverage by it. The final issue of the Elanthian Journal was edition #28, published in November, 2004, well prior to the Griffin Sword Saga's conclusion. One fun bit of trivia is that all articles published in edition #08 featured the Griffin Sword Saga, including its classifieds section, in which sale of one of the Griffin Sword shards was advertised.
Journal articles featured below are placed roughly in chronological order, based on both the publication date and edition number. Due to the nature of accepting player submissions, some news items were published well after the fact. In addition, news items in a given edition were regularly published out of chronological order, instead with NPC-written articles preceding player-written articles to place greater emphasis on them.
Five of these articles written by Sendarel and Maluverre were also featured on the Play.net website as official news articles, and they were later used on a Griffin Sword Saga summary page that was published toward the end of the 2002 but which was never updated following its creation in spite of the storyline lasting another three years. These news entries are cross-posted on the Griffin Sword War News article.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ THE SNAKE SLITHERS FORTH ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 8 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing Over the last week it has become increasingly obvious that the Snake and its followers have begun another attack on the enlightened. The Griffin Sword, powerful relic such as it is, has come under scrutiny and attack once again. Undead minions are rising from the earth, our deaths feeding their power, while its followers plot and skulk in the shadows of deceit. Most recently, a sibilant voice has been heard echoing throughout the Landing and surrounding hills, taunting and promising death and destruction upon all that is holy and good. Accompanying these dire threats and disgusting rhetoric have been hordes of relatively weak undead minions, yet they grow in strength and purpose daily. Further, and most disturbingly, the Griffin Sword itself has become tainted! The Sword still holds its powers of blessing, but black energy was seen racing along its length and pooling into the ground on Volnes. Despite repeated attempts by the Faithful to cleanse it, the taint still remains and can be felt by those with the purity to do so. So far this taint has done nothing to disturb the Sword's powers, but the future holds no such promises. We must unite against this thread of evil! The Snake's slitherings and blatherings do naught but weaken our resolve. Let the words of the grizzled old warrior harden in our hearts and stay in our minds for they are wise. He stated, "Don't let that rain spook ya. That's what they do, try and spook ya. Take yer focus off the battle." His words are wise, especially his inherent knowledge of the Snake and its followers when he said, "Just gotta be watchful. Fer every onna these confused youngsters babblin' about power and death, there's 10 others ya don't see." We must NOT succumb to random violence, striking out at the first Snake we may see. It breeds discord and unhappiness among the faithful and does nothing to sway those that are as of yet confused as to which side of Truth to pledge. We must stay vigilant, defensive, wary and cautious, but we must NOT defile places of unholy worship, taunt, or otherwise attack the Snake as these acts only serve to empower It. We must remain strong, righteous and pure. Trust in Lorminstra in all Her glory. Trust in the power of right. Trust in the power of the Griffin Sword. Trust in the faith of your brethren. Trust in the knowledge of right and wrong, truth and lies, power and pomp. Most importantly, however... trust in yourselves. Truekillr Strickulis
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ DARKNESS GATHERING? ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 8 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing Recent tales of the Griffin Sword (found just outside of the local temple in Wehnimer's Landing) becoming tainted have come to the notice of many across the continent. Many believe that this will lead to a second and perhaps greater war, for the Griffin sword, while others shirk the supernatural signs as nothing more than parlor tricks of a power-hungry mage. Well, regardless of either view, many of the followers of the crimson moon have taken this as their cue to gather. Luukosians, Sheruvians, and followers of many other Lornon Pantheon affiliates have heard the call of the Serpent, and come to the source of his many signs. Rumors of the gathering of both mortal and undead forces have shaken the followers of Liabo, and word has spread that the Order of Voln has been mobilized against them (an act that has happened but one other time, in this reporter's memory). Several signs revealed the coming of the darkness, the first being a voice hissing up from the ground to bring message that ancient business will soon be finished, followed by a commoner stalking past the ancient blade imbedded in glowing white rock, his slitted eyes revealed to those gathered as he disappeared from sight. Undead of incredible power surging within the Graveyard's gate, undoubtedly attempting to burst free and make their way to the temple. Will the time come when citizens who have semi-peacefully lived alongside one another will cast aside the veil of civil-nature and reveal themselves for their inner selves? Or will this fade like so many other trials in the history of Elanthia that proved to be of too little importance to last as more than a lingering memory? There is not much yet to do but wait and guard the blade for the safety of all, or aid your deity in the tainting of the sword's power. Where do your loyalties lie? The time to choose is now. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ THALENN SPEAKS! ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 8 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing A missive from the priest Thalenn Chelinaere was delivered to the Elanthian Journal office from the far south: "Friends, word has reached me of your troubles and this is indeed grievous news. If I could halt my pilgrimage, I would gladly do so, but there are things preventing me from journeying back. I only pray that this missive reaches the right hands, for you must know this - Do not believe a word this Morvule says, anything that comes from his mouth is a lie meant to divide you and distract you from the true threat he seeks to stir. Beware his power, both direct and subtle. Stay clear of the maelstroms the Luukosian calls down, they draw out the cursed undead from the ground to add to their foul armies. Would that I could be there, I would, but the brothers and sisters of Voln are already making plans and we are thrice as active as the enemy." Do not fear, do not falter, do not let their words plant the seed of doubt in your mind, for it will spread like a disease among you, and they will take full advantage of it. Know that we will stand, know that we are strong, and know that we will celebrate the dawning of a new day under the banner of triumph no matter how long it takes." By my hand, Priest Thalenn Chelinaere"

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ CITIZENS URGED TO PROTECT GRIFFIN SWORD ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 11 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing Luukosian forces are threatening to take our beloved Griffin Sword. This memorial has long stood outside the Temple of Lorminstra. It is rumored to have magic powers that can aid those who release the undead. No doubt this is one of the reasons that the forces of the Great Deceiver are attempting to steal this precious artifact. According to Lord Morgiest, a noble squire of the Order of the Silver Gryphons, and leader of Daingneach Onoir, the sword needs constant guarding, as well as regular infusions of mana in the area to help bind the sword to it's stone. The Order of Silver Gryphons, the Daingneach Onoir, the House of Phoenix, and Northern Fury, have all been called up to help protect the sword. Morgiest also informs us that Luukosians are trying to lure the faithful guards from their posts with rumors of a new secret entrance to a shrine to Luukos. The shrine was known to be located in the underground ruins near the Coastal Cliffs. Recently, the entrance to the shrine was destroyed. Some say this was done by Morvule, in order to protect the shrine from non-believers. Another theory is that the entrance was destroyed by natural causes, and that the Luukosians are merely claiming the credit for its destruction in order to bolster their claims to power. Sources claim that various Luukosians have been seen heading northwest from the landing, presumably to this new entrance. There are rumors that it is located near to a waterfall. According to Lord Morgiest, however, these are most likely false rumors spread by the Luukosians in order to distract the faithful from their true goal--to steal the sword. In a related story, the Paladin Lord Kendryth is traveling to Solhaven this evening. He says he has heard of giant worms crawling out of the ground and needs to determine if they are a genuine threat--or yet another attempt to distract our forces. Lady Avira Yvank-MacArin
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ COLUMN: DARK HAPPENINGS ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 12 of Ivastaen: Wehnimer's Landing During the recent events regarding the Griffin sword, the high priest of Luukos known as Lord Morvule Thinevael has been sighted in various areas. He is easily recognizable by his dark green scaled skin, slit-pupiled eyes, and a series of wavy dark ophidian marks on his neck. In recent days a vortex of souls was seen forming over the Graveyard soon after the appearance of a powerful storm, which on various days has been known to shed blood rather than droplets of water. This vortex of souls cries out, speaking of "The Call" to which they rally, undoubtedly the call to Luukos' army in this reporter's opinion. Despite much controversy regarding whether or not what many now believe the purpose of this vortex to be, one thing is for sure. The presence of this spiraling twister of the damned marks invasions in the region it descends upon, beginning with modest undead and quickly escalating to the presence of rising souls, undead of incredible power able to reduce all but the most powerful to quivering masses of flesh, if they're lucky enough to survive. The first appearance of this vortex was above the local graveyard, well known hunting grounds of the righteous and Holy, seeking to free tormented souls from their spectral prisons. The second was above the Potter's Field, known stalking grounds of zombies, found just past the fearsome home of the powerful tree spirits. It was just before the third appearance of the twister descending upon the misty chamber and surrounding Monastery that a horrid realization was made. As watchers from afar witnessed the vortex gathering glowing white souls from the battle-grounds beneath it, Lady Morgaine (accompanied at the time by Lord Demonicos and Lord Fremie) formed a horrible thought. This thought has only been proven all the more true by recent events, and Lord Morvule's own words when the Potter's Field was attacked. As the souls, normally bound to their respective regions by the magics which created them (i.e. the Graveyard, or the Monastery), were released, they were freed from their bondage to the area. Now, as those specific areas were chosen, the souls of the released ascended, as they always have towards the heavens. It was then that Lady Morgaine realized this vortex was not a mere spirit-carrier to bring hoards of undead to various areas, it was acting as a great net. Halting the spirits in their ascension and sucking them into its depths. This was all but confirmed by Morvule's earlier gloating, claiming we had played into his hands. By following the vortex and freeing the spirits from their bonds to the Land, we are granting Luukos an army he can mobilize on a whim, in essence we have helped the serpent to prepare for an attack which we will likely rarely see the magnitude of ever again. We have naught to do but prepare, hone your skills best you can. Kiss your loved ones good-bye, for this may not be a battle many will survive. I wish you the best of luck. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ THE SWORD SHATTERS ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 16 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing Many were witness to the dark events of this past Niiman. The Griffin Sword has been shattered, reports say the Prophet of Lorminstra, Ulstram, was wounded in the battle with the dark Morvule. Darkness and light clashed violently in the skies and in the hearts of us all, and for the sword, the two opposing forces were too great, and it was split asunder, back to the four pieces it once was when the brave citizens of Wehnimer's Landing fought to recover them. Wardsman Kendryth, the guardian of Ulstram, was quoted as saying, "They are drained of power, and my Lord Prophet cannot sense them without the holiness that was infused within them. We must find them immediately, for now they are very vulnerable." War is imminent. After the transgressions, Morvule revealed the true extent of his power and how far his coils reach. His allies, the Berserker Zerroth of V'tull, the Pain Lord Eryael of Mularos, and even the High Priest Draezir of Sheru, who was thought to be missing or killed, surfaced shortly after the sword was split. They have said their armies march with Morvule's, and that they will soon seek the pieces themselves once they have destroyed Wehnimer's Landing. Those who live away from these conflicts, I say this to you: Watch your home, find the sword's pieces before those of the dark do. We must be ready to face this threat. Scouts have reported seeing signs of an army on the move south of our town. Be vigilant, for we live in a dangerous time. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ LUUKOSIAN FORCES MUSTER, ULSTRAM SPEAKS ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 18 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing In a harrowing battle south of the bridge outside the Landing walls, many brave souls fell in their attempts to protect the town of Wehnimer's Landing. I myself standing back to back with my fellow combatants heard the voice of what I can only presume to be Luukos say "Release the dissipaters" in the most horrendous, sibilant hiss imaginable. No sooner passed my lips was the question, "What's a dissipater?" when a most horrible wave of emerald light smashed us to the ground which rapidly gave the enemy the upper hand. Many of us lay bleeding and stunned and rapidly succumbed to our wounds. Rescuers unable to penetrate the mass barrage of enemy onslaught left us the newly dead in peril of decay. Fortunately, a Voln affiliate named Quiethorne shared Voln's favor and bound our souls to our bodies. Soon through the valiant efforts of Boomsplat, Driikin and others the enemy was suppressed long enough to allow a mass corpse fogging to the town. Upon recovering my life, I found myself pursued by my undead familiar for many minutes whereupon it followed me to the glowing but empty stone that once contained the Gryphon Sword. There stood the prophet Ulstram, an Elven man of fearsome visage, as he has no eyes only the most horrible jagged scars. This man was heckled by the crowd and refused to reveal his prophesy but did state in a soft voice, "This temple will be the first point in their conquest of the continent." When questioned regarding the whereabouts of the Gryphon Sword, Ulstram said, and I quote "I know not where a piece is, yet. Searching would be reckless at best." And Ulstram also had this to say, "I shall return when I have some news, or I sense another encroaching attack." This reporter can only wonder at the mysterious talent Ulstram demonstrates in his arcane ability to locate enemy forces. And this reporter can only wonder if this crisis will rip apart the Landing by turning neighbor against neighbor and kin against kin. How long will it be before evil fingers stretch their way across the mountains to turn town against town? Stephivie Darkemyste, Hailing from Ta'Illistim

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ WRECKAGE IN WEHNIMER'S ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 20 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing Journal Entry: All over town, there is wreckage. Several townspeople have been murdered, and the shops have been burned down, or closed. I walk the streets now, in awe... amazed, and helpless. There is nothing I can do to stop this. The whole town is on fire now. Everywhere, people cry in the streets. Some on their knees, praying, some clutching their children tight as they quietly look on but all of us feel the same, defeated. Nothing is as it were, nowhere is safe now. Things seem hopeless, and then the rumble in the sky returns... I fear for this to be my last day alive, and as I write this, my hands tremble at the thought. Every citizen of Elanthia is gathered, so it seems. Every one is here but who amongst them can do a thing? We stand here dumbfounded, even at our own disbelief! No horror so great as this has struck the lands in so long, all my hope rests at the mercy of the gods to give us power to fight back... Lady Feya Blood-Wyne

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ WEHNIMER'S LANDING BANK TELLERS SAVED ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 21 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing Wehnimer's Landing is in the strenuous process of clearing away rubble and rebuilding after the fires set by Morvule on Volnes destroyed much of the west side of town. The Landing citizens, with their typical frontier spirit of adventure, remain unbroken and are eagerly working to restore their home. Earlier today, with the assistance of a Dwarven building expert, the bank had been re-opened. Just when the citizens thought everything was going well an earthquake struck, causing the roof of the bank to collapse, trapping tellers inside. Citizens on the street heard the screams from inside and immediately began working to clear away the rubble to save lives. The concerted efforts of the steadfast workers eventually paid off. The tellers had evidently been trapped in a protected pocket inside and were finally able to make their way out of the collapsed building to safety. There was much rejoicing by those who had worked hard to save them. A survey of the scene however showed that there is still much work to be done, as the bank will need to be rebuilt. This event is a testament to the good citizens of Wehnimer's Landing and their refusal to bend under the onslaught of evil that has recently plagued the town. With hard work and dedication, the town will be rebuilt and be better than ever. Residents of the Landing should be proud of themselves and their ability to work together under extreme conditions. We shall prevail. Danay Mayfern

The Guards have been placed on high-alert, and the citizens have been instructed to make a timely report in the event of any unusual sights or sounds discovered or overheard around the city. Ta'Vaalor has opened its gates to travelers, adventurers and any who make seek refuge, but reminds all that the defense of The Fortress is the communities' first point of order. The Vaalor elves, long known for their hatred and aggressive stance against the Undead, feel confident that any uprisings in their part of The Elven Nations will be handled quickly and adequately, as their militaristic position is un-equaled. Many wonder the capabilities of this army, and recall another Vaalor army that also felt such confidence, however the current forces are un-daunted in their stance. When asked about the current threat, this reporter was informed by a guardsman,' I have better things to do than waste my time speaking with you.' It seems to me, at least, Ta'Vaalor is well prepared for any situation. Gowain Olberath
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ COLUMN: DARK HAPPENINGS ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 23 of Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing The other day marked a truly dark eve for Wehnimer's Landing. As Luukosian forces descended upon the town, fires blazed out of control and a powerful army pillaged all that was around them. With efforts to burn led by none other than Lord Morvule, even the local Luukosian who usually did little but sneer or spit vulgarities rallied to the cause and did all they could to fan those flames. Luukos has rallied new breeds of fiends into his ever-growing army. One of the more notable undead was a variant of the form of golem found only in Luukos' temple far off on the isle of Teras. Several giant snake-headed soul golems were seen on north ring road late Volnes during the invasion which destroyed the Landing. Luukosian arch-liches and many a four-armed serpent magess were seen in the area as well accompanied by winged fiends of all sorts. Decimated by the assult, many of the locals that have wandered our town for years were caught unaware and unprepared. The shaggy mutt which has been seen playfully romping through town for many years lay dead, his skull resting on a spear just south of the local small park. Also reported missing are the flower girl and the local kittens, but hope remains they escaped into the woods. Helga is also assumed dead, but efforts are being made to repair the stairway so rubble may be moved from the entrance to free those who could be trapped within. Search efforts have been made in vain for signs of life that Tykel is secure within his establishment, but on a lighter note recent efforts have freed those trapped within the bank and Thrak Inn with efforts from both sides. Sadly the bank collapsed once more and efforts must begin once more to free several still trapped within. The Landing will recover, but it will certainly be a long process. Volsix Nai'Mos

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ COLUMN: DARK HAPPENINGS ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 30 of the month Ivastaen, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing The Dark Alliance has gathered, in the aftershock of recent events involving the Griffin Sword. As many have witnessed, the high priests of Luukos and Sheru, the painlord of Mularos and the high berserker of V'tull were seen about rallying their armies to the search for the pieces of the Griffin Sword. Few likely recall the initial forming of the Dark Alliance, but this is not the first time these four deities have gathered their minions to a single cause. With four pieces of the griffin sword scattered about the lands, it is likely each deity will send their minions, to be led by their priest, to scour a separate region. But who are these four priests? The first, and most prominent as of late, would High Priest Morvule, the Luukosian. Sadistic and cold-blooded he has made it clear whatever means necessary will be used to achieve his goal. The next to reveal himself was the High Priest Drazier of the Sheruvians. Cold and calculating, he has been seen plotting with other Sheruvians in the monastery. While none should be trusted except by those of like mind, Drazier is likely to be the most dangerous in that aspect as Sheruvians tend to be. Although they have yet to be seen in action as far as this reporter knows, the berserker Zerroth of V'tull and the painlord Eryael of Mularos are both to be considered with utmost caution, as both delight in bloodied frenzies and will not hesitate to indulge their urges. The pervasive stench of still-crackling fires mingled with the flesh of the once-proud and defiant Lessons are harsh in times of war. They must be. Learn from these mistakes, for the Great Four have awakened, and the highest of their own Orders have roused their armies. No longer are they dormant. Trifle with these powers, and become as burned as Wehnimer's Landing. It is the only sane choice you have in the face of such massive opposition, honestly. Submit to the will of Lord Luukos, Sheru, Mularos and V'tull, and live without the hardships of bloodshed. Defy... and you will know the pain and terror of war mercifully briefly before death looms over your soul. His will is spoken. His will be done. The emerald light shall guide. Armaxis N. Telexana

Zerroth, a berserker of the Lord of War, has been seen in the area leading forces and decimating the inhabitants of the island. The Lord Prophet Ulstram has been making preparations to defend the island, and it is believed that there is a piece of the Griffin Sword somewhere within the primal heart of the island. Scouts have been sent to the area in addition to the townsfolk there already looking, and for the time being the forces of darkness have been pushed back. Plans are being made for an outright assault upon their ships once the method for undertaking this course of action is perfected. Until then, we stand ready and able to defend another of Elanith's towns against the onslaught of evil. Justice will be served in the end. Lord Kendryth Tulurin, Paladin of Koar

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Solhaven Falls! ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 23 of Jastatos, 5102: Solhaven Draezir made a bold move on the part of the Dark Alliance - near the hour of midnight, all felt what he had planned. A massive explosion to the north of Solhaven sent half a mountain tumbling down into a pass, cutting off the Freeport from both aid and any possible escape. Many held their breath for what was to come. And then they heard the chantings of the Sheruvian forces, gaining ground as they marched into the city. Their foul voices carried on the wind, overtaking the sound of their wardrums, drowning all in their cacophony as the battle raged on. Their forces took the Hangman's Bridge, overwhelming it with their numbers and their now fiercely zealous ranks. From there it was only a short way to Tumbledown Lane, the beginnings of Solhaven. They overwhelmed those they found there easily, and made their way into the heart of town. If there is one thing to be thankful for in such a grim situation, it is that innocent lives were not wasted - as the Sheruvians broke past the defenses, Vornavis' Gates opened briefly, allowing peasants and other innocents to flee into the inner city while they still could. If it were not for this, the streets would be clogged with the bodies of the dead and the dying. Locals were beleaguered by the forces of darkness, the Sheruvians. Lord Kendryth returned from his encampment, apparently severely wounded by an attack that was sprung on them at the same time Solhaven was being overrun. Barely escaping with his life, he brought both dire and good news - his encampment had been nearly destroyed and his men scattered, but he also had vital information to share. He spoke of one of his scouts returning while being chased by frenzied Sheruvians. The scout spoke of a high-ranking Sheruvian on his way there, and that this individual would arrive on the 29th of Jastatos. The attack was then sprung, and Kendryth escaped with little but his life and that piece of information. It proved to be key when a group of adventurers brought him in and revealed the true extent of what had occured his absence. They quickly mustered a force and headed out to Cairnfang forest to lie in wait. All was not to go as planned, however, as just before the carriage approached, local Sheruvians attempted to thwart their attempts. Some defenders fell, just before the carriage approached, but the Sheruvians were quickly dispatched, and the band of adventurers slaughtered their guards and broke into the carriage. There they found a Sheruvian Inquisitor, apparently given orders by Draezir to oversee Solhaven in his stead while he focused his search for the shard of the Griffin Sword. He was killed after becoming hostile when being interrogated, and hidden within the carriage they found a chest - trapped with vile magic. Fleeing at the behest of Kendryth, they quickly hid the chest away in a safe place. When Draezir discovered that this ambush had occurred, his rage was so great that he descended with thousands of his troops, setting flame to building after building in an attempt to rout out the adventurers who held the chest. After Draezir had thoroughly wrought destruction, he sought the chest northward, thinking they had fled into the Cairnfang forest itself and beyond. He was wrong - they had taken shelter in one of the caves along the beach, safe from his invaders and his raging fires. Finally gaining control over the dark magics of the chest, it was opened - revealing both an orb and several onyx shards. A note inside read that the orb was dormant, and apparently had a connection to Ulstram. The shards were to be used in dealing with the guardian statues that patrolled the streets of Solhaven. Clearly, this was why Draezir had wanted the chest back so desperately. The adventurers passed out the shards to defenders of the town, and while Draezir and his forces scoured north, the adventurers destroyed the foundations of his occupation in one swift, decisive blow. The orb was presented to Kendryth, and a group of those loyal to the light gathered at Lorminstra's altar to pray for guidance. Kendryth became aware of the orb's purpose, and deciphered how to unlock it. In doing so, he sent the adventurers gathered off into another realm, one of twisted dreams and shadows. Ulstram was there, frozen in an icy crystal and tortured and wounded. Fighting bravely against the horrors that relentlessly harried them, the stalwart adventurers managed to destroy the power source that maintained the realm's existence and thus freed Ulstram from his plight. Summoning their magics, they returned safely from the darkness just as it began to shatter into nonexistence itself, and all celebrated. For when they returned, the rule of Sheru's minions had been utterly crumbled. The banners of the jackal were being burned, and their own banners of the Freeport being raised in their stead. The gates of Vornavis burst open, leading to heartfelt reunions between the refugees and those who were caught outside the gates when the catastrophe happened. Solhaven is free once again, thanks to the resistance. Sendarel Akruthos, Scholar of Nydds

Half of the Griffin Sword has been recovered, and has fallen into the hands of the dark alliance. After a defeat on Teras Isle, the followers of light counted their losses, brushed themselves off, and moved on to Solhaven to search for the quillions of the legendary weapon. Once again they were left with the sour taste of defeat. Now it seems that nearly all hope is lost. "It started with a panicked townsperson screaming, "Invasion! All archers to the towers! Man the ballistas!"" says Lord Izalude Tangel. "They took Hangman's bridge after about an hour, and slowly advanced through Tumbledown Lane, but we held them at Bayside Road. It was a standoff that lasted several hours before we were finally overwhelmed. It was all going great, until the statues started exploding." "The town was overrun with Sheruvians. Bodies lay strewn about the streets, the few survivors ran about in terror for the last few moments of their lives as I arrived on the scene," recounts High Lord Arshwikk Aralock. "It was all I could do to try and dent their numbers, perhaps slow them down. My jaguarundi companion Nik and I engaged droves of enemies, I was badly wounded, and Nik fell protecting me. I sought refuge in a building where I recovered. For a long time thereafter I would go out, fight, hide and heal, then fight again. Ultimately, even the few refuges fell to the forces of Sheru as well. Myself and a few others withdrew the final evening. I was not about to see how Solhaven was saved." Despite the near hopeless odds, the defenders of Solhaven fought an overwhelming Sheruvian force of thousands. Briefly, the gates of Vornavis opened allowing refugees to run for their lives. Baron Malwind was merciful for allowing his gates to be open briefly. But could this whole situation have been averted if Malwind used the army of Vornavis to combat the Sheruvians? That's another story. Inevitably, Solhaven fell under Sheruvian control because of sheer numbers and was put under martial law by Draezir, the high priest of Sheru. First he set up orbs to incinerate people, and when those failed he created statues to patrol town, killing those in their path. These were set up so that Sheruvian prayer times could be enforced. After several days, a wounded Kendryth returned with information about a Sheruvian inquisitor coming into the area with a magical chest. Kendryth and company killed the inquisitor and recovered the chest, and within were the shards that were used in dealing with the statues, and an orb which held Ulstram captive in an alternate plane of existence. The next day, Ulstram pinpointed the location of the quillions and set up a raid on the Sheruvian camp. Two unnamed individuals claim it was a secret selective raid, so that the Lornon followers wouldn't beat them to it. However, a group of nine Lornonites also found the location, and eventually beat the overwhelming force of Liaboists to the quillions. Now both sides march east. The alliance of light with hope all but lost, and the dark alliance with morale at its peak. Lorminstra and her followers can only pray that the rest of the war will have a more positive outcome. How will the rest of the war turn out? Is it fate that the sword pieces fall into the wrong hands again? Only time will tell. Lord Aetheri Machtes, Ashrim Wizard, and scholar of Illistim

Identifying herself only as the Dreamwalker, an apparent Emissary of Ronan revealed herself to several in the region. One claims to have seen her entirely, a pale, silver-eyed woman entirely in black, with a silver-hilted sword. This "Dreamwalker" claimed that battles will soon be fought in the Elven Nations and dark armies will invade the ancient city-states. The Emissary also congratulated those who had participated in the defense and liberation of Solhaven, but advised that the opponents of the Alliance move to an offensive posture. In Solhaven, the Dreamwalker used only her voice and a brief glimpse of her face to approach many who clustered around Ronan's altar there. She asked for those who would fight Sheru, Ronan's traditional enemy, to speak then and a score did so. The Dreamwalker also said she would not give her name nor reveal herself fully in Alisaire's presence, as "Morvule's chosen child" was there. She cautioned others from harming the dark elf, saying that to do so would further taint the sword. The Dreamwalker also warned those assembled against lies, bloodlust, or acting from fear or to achieve martyrdom. Each of these would taint them and bring them under the control of an Alliance Arkati. Should any of the listeners find themselves falling into one of these traps, they should repent and pray before the Lords and Ladies of Liabo. Before she left, the Dreamwalker had one final thing to say to those gathered around Ronan's altar in Solhaven. She said that all who serve Ronan or hate Sheru should gather and seek her again at the altar during the night until it is time to move to the east. They should be prepared to fight and to spread the call until that time comes.

- Summarizing the events of the first Griffin Sword War storyline from 1996.
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ The First Griffin Sword War ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 5 of Eoantos, 5102 In the spring of 5096, a prophet of Lorminstra came to Wehnimer's Landing with the tale of a sword made and broken. The pommel was of a single great sapphire, grasped within platinum griffin talons. The hilt was of alabaster, wrapped with platinum and gold braid and enchanted to never grow cold or hot and always fit the hand of the wielder. The blade was forged by master smiths on Teras Isle and folded to an unbelievably keen edge. The quillions were made of gold and like the hilt and pommel, were encrusted with fine gems. Both sides of the quillions spread wide, like a pair of griffin wings. Once complete, the sword was enchanted by powerful mages. It glowed like flame in the sun, a moonbeam at night and as a beacon in the darkest storm. The blade was presented to Morfell, a warrior-priest who served Lorminstra. He performed great ceremonies upon the Griffin Sword and it is said that Lorminstra personally blessed it. But he fell from her and performed a dark ritual in secret. He gave the blade over to what would be known as the Dark Alliance, V'tull, Sheru, Mularos and Luukos. All through the night and the next day, a great storm arose that blotted out the sun. At the height of the tempest, the Sword was broken and four pieces scattered through the lands. The prophet told those assembled at Hearthstone Manor that the Sword's pieces were in the possession of the Alliance and that now, many years later, they planned to desecrate her temple in Wehnimer's Landing. They would use her own power contained within each piece of the Sword and defile the temple for all time by their actions. When the prophet fell silent, the people of the town began to ready themselves, hoarding magical items and ensuring Lorminstra knew of their deeds. V'tull came first, nine days later. His legions were led by feral animals bearing disease of many kinds. This first attack was fodder for the defender's swords, as was the second wave. Outposts were set up along the approaches to Wehnimer's Landing and those who got past the first line fell to a second or third. Skirmishers ranged ahead and those who could not fight aided the empaths and clerics. At the end, Ragni and Gillaume fought the leader, the Mouth of V'tull. After Ragni brought it low, he gave the pommel into Gillaume's safekeeping. Sheru's invasion a week later was much like the first, but where V'tull's minions were no more difficult than a krolvin, Sheru sent his harbingers into the melee where they tore through many defenders. The chaos was great and even the knowledge of who possessed the hilt was lost. Mularos sent his hordes in a week after Sheru had failed. Unlike the previous two, there were no lulls that the defenders could use to rest and recover their strength. But just as the minions of the Alliance had grown more powerful, so had the defenders. Organized groups were sent out and overpowered small forces loyal to Mularos before moving on to the next. Where Mularosians found their way behind the lines or caught a few unawares, the tables were turned. As the Master of Pain prepared to enter Lorminstra's temple with the quillions, having slain all in his path, Thalior arrived and brought it down with a single cast on the very steps. Luukos came last in the first war and as with the first four times, the awful pounding of the drums was heard. The skies slowly turned blood red and then the invaders came. Vortices that would strip the spells off the defenders and lizard-warriors whose hides were thick enough to make a weapon vibrate out of a defender's hand followed the more expected animals. Meteor swarms and lightning rained from the skies and once more chaos and confusion were the only victors on the battlefield. Finally, however, Luukos's high warlock was destroyed and the blade recovered. A month later, the four parts, pommel, hilt, quillions and blade were reunited. The blade which had been broken was made anew and placed in front of Lorminstra's temple in Wehnimer's Landing. Until recently, it was sometimes possible to rub the sword and secure Lorminstra's blessing for a weapon of your own. According to one legend, there may come someone Lorminstra deems worthy of using her Griffin Sword in combat and they will be allowed to pull the sword from the solid block that encases it. But that will never come to pass unless the sword can be reforged yet again.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Second Piece Found! ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 5 of Eoantos, 5102: Solhaven Mere days after the Sheruvian forces were driven from Solhaven, the resistance against the Dark Alliance mobilized their collective power to make a final, decisive assault upon their would-be conquerors. As the Prophet Ulstram rested, plans were laid to make an offensive move upon Draezir's encampment - rumors were that his search had proved extremely fruitful, and that he had narrowed down a small section in the Cairnfang where the piece of the sword might be found. Realizing their forces were in a state of mild chaos from the unexpected victory of the resistance, the residents of Solhaven planned a daring attack upon Draezir's encampment. Working with the Prophet Ulstram once he regained his strength, the adventurers pierced the veil of illusion that previously shrouded his location from others. Fighting through the gates and the troops that were fortifying the base, they succeeded in hampering his forces severely. At the same time, however, the spies of the Dark Alliance were taken to Lord Kendryth's battered encampment and told to destroy any remaining survivors from the previous conflict with Draezir's army. As one side fought, so did the other, and as both groups retreated from their accomplished missions, they came unwittingly upon the very area the Dark Alliance had narrowed their search down to. In the chaos of battle, however, any organized search effort had been abandoned in the interests of defense. The adventurers stumbled upon a cave nearly at the same moment, and there they discovered the second piece of the Griffin Sword - its golden quillions. They are held safely, for now, but rumors persist to the true allegiances of the one who holds them. Time will surely tell where their heart lies. In the meantime, whispers of foul things afoot in the east reach me by missive, yet they are unclear and unspecific in their descriptions. Sendarel Akruthos, Scholar of Nydds

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Messenger from Ta'Vaalor! Illistim army destroyed! ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 6 of Eoantos, 5102 Editor's note: Please keep in mind that this is a preliminary report. While it is certain that the elves have faced a tactical defeat, messengers have been known to exaggerate certain parts of their story, especially in a retreat. We should have more on this development by the next issue of the Journal and will be able to confirm or deny any part of this startling story. At this time, we know that the Ilistim sent out a contingent of several companies of their armored footsoldiers on 4 Eoantos, supported by an equal number of archers. They marched south to the ruins of ShadowGuard with the intent of engaging a rumored undead host that had arisen in the area. The elves were very confident in their success as they left Ta'Illistim, although irritated at being forced to fight the battles of the west. On 6 Eoantos, they reached their destination, one of Ta'Vaalor's outlying Keeps around the ruins. An account of the battle was relayed through several seeing orbs, but thus far we have had no eyewitness reports from anyone at the scene of the battle. From what we do know, the elves began the engagement well, decimating the undead horde with blessed arrows and disciplined bladework by their footmen. A cavalry unit, whether Vaalor or Ilistim at this time is unknown, was also used to break up the undead for further destruction. The reports through the seeing orbs speak of cyclones or vortices of some sort that revitalized the freshly destroyed undead. The elves had been advancing through the cut-down horde, so the new enemy arose from practically under their feet. What happened next is unclear, but we do know that the elves suffered extremely high losses and yielded the field of battle. Casualty lists have not yet been released, nor is it yet known what happened to the Vaalorian Keep above the battlefield. If any readers have further information, please use our submission guidelines on the back page of the Journal so that we can publish the full details of this terrible event.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Whispers of Darkness - Part One ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 16 of Jastatos, 5102 At first, the incursions of the Dark Alliance were but mild... whispers of a darkness behind the storms that brewed nightly for weeks. They whispered of shadows rising, gathering and lying in wait for a sign that would come. It was then that a voice spoke from the blackened skies. In its hissing tones, it would deliver its message from above as the lightning raged across the countryside and the rain drowned the land. It spoke of that which was lost and would soon be reclaimed... and that which was pure that would soon be tainted. Those who heard this message puzzled over its meaning. Clearly, it was one of dire portent, but vague, and possibly misleading. Those who would stand in the light gathered, and pondered on what to make of these warnings. Then evil struck, and the darkness behind these warnings was given a name, Morvule. A Luukosian of unsurpassed power rose from the shadow and culled a great army of the undead from the cursed lands that surrounded Wehnimer's Landing. His goal had been made clear - the Griffin Sword, a holy sword that had fallen into shadow once before, but was recovered by the servants of the light in a great battle and reforged into its former glory. It stood safely in the square of Erebor, underneath the watchful gaze of Lorminstra's temple, its blade sheathed within a massive stone. Ultram, Prophet of Lorminstra, who had also recently arrived in Wehnimer's Landing, warned those who would stand against Morvule. The prophet had reasons for journeying to the Landing. He revealed that the sword had within the very core of its existence... a flaw. A taint. He proposed a plan, then, to cleanse the sword of this minute flaw... the flaw that would allow the shadow to consume it once again. So plans were made, on sides of both light and dark. Days waned into nights and nights into days... but finally, those of the light were ready. Ulstram withdrew the sword from its stony sheath on that night, and began preparations for the cleansing. The power of his magic was enough as to illuminate the entire settlement as if it were the brightest of noons... all proceeded well, until those of of the dark lept from their hiding places. Morvule appeared at the crucial moment of the ceremony, disrupting the plans of the light. Darkness and light clashed, and titanic energies raged across the sky as both Prophet and Luukosian fought, and the Griffin Sword shone through with its power against evil. As the battle turned in Ulstram's favor, and as he swung to deal the finishing blow... Morvule reached into the flaw, the scar that had been left into the existence of the blade so long ago, and exploited it... fueled it with his own ruthless ambition and cruelty. The sword was split asunder once again. Its pieces flew off into the horizons in a brilliant explosion of cataclysmic energy. Neither light nor darkness won the night, but the previous struggle was but a taste of what would come. Sendarel Akruthos, Scholar of Nydds
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Whispers of Darkness - Part Two ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ For Morvule, bitter and angered that he had not recovered the sword, revealed the true extent of the shadow's grasp. That night, the Dark Alliance showed itself as reforged once again. Draezir, Eryael and Zerroth each represented the leaders of their dark gods' faction. They gathered their forces and nearly razed Wehnimer's Landing to the ground. But for the brave citizens who fought the fires and repaired the damage, the outpost may not have survived. Both sides of the conflict searched desperately for the shattered pieces. The task proved even more difficult since the relic was drained of its immense power. The first fragment was found near the dwarven settlement of Kharam-Dzu, upon the remote island of Teras. Here, V'tull's forces were mustered by the Berserker Zerroth. A fleet of black ships surrounded the small island, launching attacks by its troops nearly every night. Their armies hit hard and fiercely, and their bloodlust knew no bounds - each defender was hard-pressed to keep their own. But for a time, they did hold them back. The tide of the battle turned when those of the light smuggled themselves aboard one of the ships of the Dark Fleet. Learning secrets from the information aboard, they used it to their advantage, and soon learned the location of the hilt of the Griffin Sword, and sought it out. But here, again, darkness would show its excellence at deception - for a servant of Mularos recovered the blade first. Even though Zerroth's forces lost one small battle, their work had been accomplished on the island. Rumours began to filter up from the south, of a great thing falling from the sky... and so the conflict moved to Solhaven, where the Sheruvian Draezir gathered his forces. Summoning creatures of utter unworldliness, he set them to plague the citizens of Solhaven while his forces built up unseen around them. The beasts of shadow killed many innocent citizens in their unnatural lust for life, but Ulstram again arrived to aid in the struggle. Through the resourcefulness of the citizens, the creatures were banished, but it was too late. Draezir's forces had been bolstered, and were ready to attack. They came in droves, pushing past the defenses of Solhaven and onto the streets within days. Their advance did not stop, and Draezir reveled in each position overwhelmed. What he planned, no one knew. Whispers of things being plotted filtered through the streets, and one follower of Sheru was selected by Draezir to bring forth the ruse he had so carefully laid. Masked as a frightened, repenting follower of the dark, this servant deceived Ulstram into taking an orb into his hands. Within moments, the trap was sprung, and Ulstram was simply frozen and immediately drawn into the depths of the device, which then vanished itself. With only Kendryth's shaken aid, Solhaven now stood against the threat of the darkness. Draezir's army grew daily, and incursions into the town went farther. The murder of innocents continued, and hope dwindled away. Sendarel Akruthos, Scholar of Nydds

This fact has sent a shock wave into the Elven Nations and the surrounding lands. Many travelers are seeking out Ta'Vaalor to get involved in the action, but why? I've spoken to some who say the only reason they are here is to protect the Griffin Sword pieces from falling into the hands of the Dark Alliance. This is a noble cause, and these are the few who value the lands as a whole, and who wish to protect us from the darkness that lurks in our villages. Others are here to protect the town from the evils of the Dark Alliance. This is great, but do they realize if the Elves have their say no one of non-Elven origin will be able to protect their homes? The Vaalor Elves will not stand for non-Elven races to join their beloved militia. While they worry about their village's walls, they miss the bigger picture. One thing is certain, however; if the Elves do not see past their arrogance, the town of Vaalor will surely fall into the depths of darkness. We must be ready for such a threat, for the day will come when we must take up arms and fight for our lives, not for the petty reasons that plague our lives. Fellow Vaalorians, dark times are upon us, let us not go down without a fight. The Listener of Rivengarde

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Elves Battle The Dark Alliance (Part 1) ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 21 of Eoantos, 5102: Ta'Illistim To Whom it May Concern: In the interests of informing the public of current events, I've begun taking notes upon the general happenings of the rather odd situations that are currently afoot in the Shining City of Ta'Illistim. My findings may be freely distributed to whoever has an interest in such matters. I suppose it all truly began on the 6th of Eoantos for our people - while I did not directly witness it, I am no stranger to researching the obscure. Apparently, a relatively large force of undead and other various creatures were detected near the borders of ShadowGuard. Examining the situation, I personally found that it occurred at one of the worst times possible in a political sense - in the recent months a faction of nobles and other empowered individuals were pushing for a more disciplined and stronger force in arms for the Shining City. Quite inexplicable, really, they just seemed to pop up with these suggestions when things had been utterly calm on such fronts before. Regardless, as it was our scryers who discovered this band of creatures, the military faction petitioned that the bolstered forces of Ta'Illistim meet this small threat as a test of their new policies and training. Political chest thumping, in its barest form. Not wanting to appear desperate, they sent a quarter of Ta'Illistim's total forces to meet the threat near ShadowGuard. Unfortunately, they stood no chance, as it was an ambush by what is now known as the Dark Alliance. They were utterly destroyed, along with a small Vaalorian Keep that they had taken rest in the night before the battle. All of us in Ta'Illistim knew something had gone wrong, as the power of the necromancy wielded upon the battlefield was so strong it sent ripples through the essence that could be felt from quite a distance away. Our brothers in Ta'Vaalor were more aware of the situation - they had been watching from the beginning. The militant faction that had been surging in popularity rightly plummeted that night, and I've barely heard mention of it among the nobility since. The Vaalorian Guard informed us that they would be taking care of the situation, and of course, would welcome the talents of our mages and other scholars for use in strategic planning. The remainder of Ta'Illistim's forces are either stationed in the city itself or have been used to bolster the ranks of our border guard should the Dark Alliance make a move toward us. Either way, they are stretched rather thin at the moment, and a tad red-faced to boot. To my knowledge, there have been some rather brief discussions with the Ardenai for reinforcements should the need for such arise. However, I doubt any aid will be required - once the Vaalor mobilized their forces, they halted the Dark Alliance's movement completely. At the time of this writing, they are currently fighting the enemy about a week's ride south of of the city itself and neither force shows any sign of retreating. Good news, at the least, though there have been reports of raids and small battles on their northern borders by undead and other creatures. I've heard they began recruiting again to deal with this threat, but have not heard of any progress, publically announced or privately whispered. Curiously, there are even more pieces to this puzzle, namely the reason why this Dark Alliance is even here in the first place. It appears they search for a remnant of a rather important religious artifact - The Griffin Sword. Having not really studied Western mythology, I cannot profess to know the intricacies of the artifact, save that it is powerful enough to warrant stirring the tempers of the Vaalor - a dangerous game, indeed, and certainly not something to pursue on a whim. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Elves Battle The Dark Alliance (Part 2) ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 21 of Eoantos, 5102: Ta'Illistim There are also other points of conflict beyond the physical battles being waged on elven-held soil - mainly, the clashing of ideologies between traditionalist elves and the sudden influx of helpful Westerners into our lands. Before the appearance of the Dark Alliance, most of our people were content to ignore them as they brought increased trade and other goods. Personally, I find them an interesting lot, but my nature as a scholar lends itself to such friendliness. I never close off a new avenue of information, be it an ancient grimoire or a chipper little human child. But I am not in the majority of my people, I'm afraid - most of the nobility often bring up the Westerners in light conversation, and they joke of their militiaries and other organized efforts, deeming them little more than glorified mercenary bands here to seek the spoils of war. This attitude obviously grates on otherwise amiable Westerners. The Vaalor, however, are a more stubborn and active lot than the lords and ladies of Ta'Illistim. They reacted to the Westerners far more harshly, believing that they actually thought themselves better than the elite Vaalorian Guard. Several arrests have been made on charges of inciting mobs and other acts of "vigilante justice". Justice is another point of conflict, as well - I came to be deeply involved in this whole matter through that very issue. Apparently the Westerners among Ta'Illistim have become fed up with the open supporters of the Dark Alliance that came along with them and the apparent lack of punishment from Ta'Illistim. The Vaalor have dealt with this issue in their own usual direct approach already - they have since executed one supporter publically, and have exiled any others they find on their streets as a warning. I have yet to hear of any other suffering stiffer punishment or going against the order of exile. Regardless, I've been in contact with a few of these visitors from the West and find them a pleasant bunch. As Ta'Illistim's Guard really does not want to bother with them - they dread another embarassment should they, I fear - I spoke to them of the current situation. Ideally, I would be pleased should these supporters be ousted from the city, but politically, it is a messy issue. Ta'Vaalor has it rather easy in this regard - they are usually of one mind on such trivial matters as religion, which is why they were so quick to act on execution and exile. Our shining city of Ta'Illistim, however, is far different. We have many different factions among the nobility and scholars, and each has an ample amount of political power at their disposal. Such a widespread outlawing of certain religious affiliations could well ruffle the feathers of several organizations currently residing in Ta'Illistim. Not because they have ties to them, mind you, but their ideals and beliefs are rather unorthodox and such a law is reminiscent of the Rysus Codex and other nonsense they enact in the Turamzzyrian Empire. Restrictions like that are frowned upon in a city where the free exchange of knowledge has been fostered for thousands of years. Beyond all the social issues, however, things seem to be progressing well for our people in the battle against this Dark Alliance. Recently a new threat has reared its head, a psionic by the name of Harith. She apparently - with quite a bit of zeal, I imagine - has declared Ta'Illistim conquered and under the law of the Dark Alliance. While a majority of Ta'Illistim's scholars are unconcerned with her wild claims and the nobility simply finds it another matter to joke about over their meals, a small contingent of researchers in the field of mind magic have been severely disturbed by her presence. They are slowly organizing their efforts into studying ways to combat her, though they are provided little support. After all, most of Ta'Illistim has no use for mind-magic. Ironically, the ones who utilize it most frequently are the Westerners who have come to the city. Ta'Illistim's Guard, however, has asked the scryers in the city to divine her location. I imagine they wish to prove themselves worthy to defend the Shining City's people from any threat. However, the search has thus far proved fruitless, as Harith appears to be far, far away from Ta'Illistim's physical borders. Her power must be rather exceptional to have reached the thoughts of our city from that great a distance. But, on the other hand, I'm rather positive they are quite limited as well due to being stretched so thin. The various battles against the Dark Alliance look bright at the time of this writing. While we are not wholly victorious, they are not victorious in the slightest, and each of their attempts to gain an advantage are met with stalwart resistance from elf and Westerner alike. Word is that a poisoner is loose, preying on the poor folks wandering around alone in the south of the city. Already at least half a dozen have been attacked by the bloke, and each time it sounds like he sticks them when they least expect it with some sort of poisoned needle. I heard that a couple of them even died! Most of the poor lads and lassies that have been attacked are pretty tight-mouthed about what's happened; and who can blame them? That sort of thing you just gotta put behind you to move on. From what I've heard, though, it sounds like they're all dragged off afterwards and then forced to go through with some weird ritual where they get their heads poked and prodded by an old sorcerous hag, all the while feeling and seeing and hearing all sorts of strange things like animals and banshees and weird raspy voices. It sounded worse than the last cup of a bad batch of mead! I'm not fully sure what this fellow wants or is trying to do, and I don't rightly think that anyone else knows around here, either. Some bloke was saying that the poisoner is with a group of foreigners from overseas, those odd bald-headed elves with the squinty eyes. I also heard some rumor that the banshee that some of the victims were talking about was actually running the whole thing, but that doesn't make much sense because undead can't think, right? The bloke who claimed that chimed in saying that this banshee, or whatever it was, was really a reincarnation of a general, though I didn't get to hear much of that theory before other folks made him be quiet. As for the poisoner, or poisoners if there be more than just the one, he seems to like to target those folks walking alone at night. Guard yeself and ye loved ones well if going through that part of Solhaven until he's caught. For now, it seems that it's better to just avoid that area altogether, especially if walking alone or at night. If ye know anything more about this poisoner or those working with him, please, oh please let the citizens of Solhaven know so they can take care of him. Haven Emergency Resource Team is a wonderful start; just asking with the crystal amulet's a good bet for getting in touch with those fine individuals. The last thing this city needs is another crazy fellow running around hurting folks. -Liam 'Kestrel' O'Hopper
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ ELVEN MADWOMAN SIGHTED IN THE WEST ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 31 of Lormesta, 5104: none Numerous reports indicate that Chaeye Larrinthe has fled the elven City-States yet again, this time surfacing in the frontier lands surrounding the Wehnimer's Landing trade outpost and even within Solhaven's city streets. Although such accounts do not indicate that she is posing an immediate threat to the general public at present, she does appear to be reviving her radical cult for questionable militant acts. Among Larrinthe's initiation rituals are various forms of bodily mutilation, such as branding, and the apparent murder or sacrifice of defenseless children. Luckily, not all would-be cultists have decided to go through with the secular initiation rites in full and have instead turned their backs on the madwoman. About three centuries ago, Larrinthe was the perpetrator of a scandal within the Vaalorian military ranks. After her sister died in an unfortunate training accident, Larrinthe attempted to murder her superior officer in what can only be described as a tragic - and lasting - bout of insanity. The benevolence extended by the Vaalorian elves permitted Larrinthe to remain alive despite her conviction and death sentencing, and she was transferred to the safekeeping of an Illistim insane asylum. Some years later, Larrinthe escaped from the asylum, killing and injuring several innocent workers in the process. More recently, Larrinthe has been sighted leading a volatile faction in a suicide campaign against the Alliance operating under the guise of religious righteousness. Larrinthe is described as a Vaalorian woman of lithe build, approximately three and a half to four centuries old, with long silver hair and curiously striking silver eyes. She can be easily identified by the series of tattoos encircling her forearms in what might be the Old Elven runic script. Although she most often slinks in the shadows like a starved jackal eyeing a one-winged chicken, her voice is distinct in its cold, silky-smooth tone. Those encountering this madwoman are urged to be aware of her highly volatile nature and to consider her a dangerous menace to those uninitiated to her radical cult. Crystal amulets provide a wonderful means of calling for help from nearby guards. Local militias would be well-advised to be wary of Larrinthe's presence in the weeks to come, should she attempt any more open acts of violence. Ali'shara Frey, Citizen of Solhaven

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ WAR COMES TO SOLHAVEN! ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 6 of Charlatos, 5104: Solhaven It's here! I don't understand why, but it's really here! Just last week, Solhaven was such a nice and peaceful city, and now all of a sudden, war is knocking at our door! Why, it wasn't about a year and a half ago that I remember all the fighting and the bloodshed and the horror when that dreadful man came and took over the place, calling it Night Haven. That time it was someone named Draezir, a High Priest of Sheru. And he was downright frightening! Fighting and shadows and huge, mean old jackal statues everywhere you turned. And then there was that horrible, awful fire in the Captain's Rest that burned people alive! But, thank Imaera, he finally left us in peace. I think that he was looking for something and he got it and that's why he left, but I don't really know the details. At least he's gone, and that's all that mattered! But now it's happening again! Only this time, there's more fire and less shadows, and the fellow who is calling all the shots is called Zerroth. I don't know whose army is scarier, but this one sure knows how to butcher people something awful. Someone said that he's a V'tullian Berserker, and Draezir's friend. No wonder he's so horrible! If he wants something from Solhaven, I hope someone gives him it and leaves us alone! It's been raining an awful lot lately, but not enough to wash away all of the blood and soot covering the city streets. You can see how bad it is if you look around. All the townsfolk have this haunted look in their eyes, like they've seen what no one should have to see, and, oh dear, the poor children. Their laughter used to ring loud as they played games on sunny afternoons, but now they're hurried to and fro with their parents, silent as dormice. And when the fighting starts, it's just too terrifying for me to handle! At least there are brave folk like Galesmight, Murp, Brimzstone, Calael, Tyraesa, and Mnar out there to save us. Then others like Starsnuffer and Kinshack are right up front, taking care of everything trying to burn the city, like real life heroes! I just don't know how they can do it. And then folk like Kadesha! She's always running out and back again with those poor, brave people who've lost their lives, then right up and running back out for some more! I sure hope that this whole war ends soon. It isn't right that it should come here, and by Imaera, I wish I was brave enough to do something about it. Bovese Nielle, Healer at Large
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ DEFENSE RALLIES IN SOLHAVEN ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 9 of Charlatos, 5104: Solhaven In light of the recent advances by the V'tullian Berserker Zerroth's army on the freeport city of Solhaven, numerous militias from both sides of the Dragonspine have banded together to provide the locals with much-needed aid. Kilthal, Captain of the Solhaven militia, H.E.R.T., has been coordinating the defense against the invading force. Directly aiding him are Ezre, Captain of the medical Triage, and Lhel, a Lieutenant of the same unit. Of the militias, the Northern Fury, led by Valicar, and by Syberus in his absence; the Snarian Guard, led by Maeillwynn; the Silver Gryphons, led by Cryheart; the Ardenai Temple Knights, led by Elrodin, and with local liaison Dragolyn; and the Zul Logothian Territorial Guard, led by Kneo, all have pledged support in the defense of Solhaven. Also formally promising aid are the Second Militia of Ta'Vaalor, represented by Goonkah, Harrin, and Ferdirand; the Black Wolf Clan, led by Syrile; House Onoir, led by Tebon; Willow Hall, led by Tunder; House Sovyn, led by Nithili; as well as a number of Restafarians and the River's Rest West Road Mobile Tower Combined Fightin' Bridgade from the Barony of Torre, headed by Nilandia and Railien. Those seeking to aid the militias directly in the war should contact the named individuals. Preparations are continually underway in anticipation of repeated strikes. Sacks full of conjured and foraged herbs, strength-imbedded items, life keeping flasks, pure potions, and additional magical items are being collected and distributed among the defense. Supplies for the various ballista towers, including oil, bows, arrows, and cut logs, are also being stocked between skirmishes. However, defenders are urged to carry them on their person or to store them in secure locations during the lulls to help counter Alliance sabotage. The Triage points designated for tending to the wounded and dead are located in the Captain's Rest and in the garden of Oleani's temple. Should conditions prove too dangerous, the latter is to be abandoned and defenders to withdraw to inside of the temple. The Broken Tower and Liabo Plaza should not be used as they are extremely vulnerable and easily overrun. The recommended tactic utilizing those locations is a fog-and-run to avoid increased death counts. Those rescuers who make use of a spirit fog instead of that provided by the Order of Voln should call for aid to Lem's Spirits of the Delta on the Market Bridge, as it is under cover. Should fires break out in the city again, Brother Kindarel has offered sale of buckets to carry water in his Priestly Purchases shop, near Koar's temple. They can be refilled most readily at Niima's shrine, Oleani's pond, Ronan's pond, Jastev's fountain, and the Zoo's pond to help quell the flames. Due to the recent effectiveness of the V'tullian forces in close combat, defenders are urged to use weapons that they do not cherish lest they be wrenched from their hands on the battlefield or lost entirely. The citizens of Solhaven would like to relate their most heartfelt gratitude to all of the brave militias and individuals rallying to her defense. A special mention of appreciation is reserved for Baron Malwind for his troops, and for Priestess Daemere for her aid. Ali'shara Frey

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ VICTORY! ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 24 of Charlatos, 5104: Solhaven Oh, praise be to Imaera, and praise be to all of Liabo! Peace has finally returned to Solhaven! These past weeks have been absolutely dreadful, what with V'tullian Berserker Zerroth's army attacking the city day in and day out, with hardly a chance to let anybody rest. And the affect it's had on the people who live here is beyond words. Even still, folks are out and about trying to clean up in the army's wake, rebuilding and getting rid of all those nasty reminders of war. And, oh dear, all those poor folks who fell and did not get up again; may the good Lady Gosaena take care of them beyond the Gates. From what I understand, the blind elf and Lorminstran Prophet Ulstram joined up with a lady they call the Dream Walker, a Paladin of Ronan, to finally stop that bad man Zerroth. They, and a group of brave folks, went and put him in a deep sleep, sort of like a trance, with some form of magic I've never heard of before. Someone told me that they actually went into his mind, but I don't understand how they could have done that. It had something to do with an orb Kerl was given, and a coliseum inside it. There was a series of battles fought then, in some sort of gladiator arena. And, oh dear! A dreadful, nasty imp was the fellow who was in charge of it. The first creature that those brave folks had to fight was a wispy black sandling, which Jacinto defeated after Exeunt fell to it in single combat. Then came a massive skeletal golem, which Charna beat, even though it took the lives of both Evelith and Jhayde beforehand. Next was some massive, bloodshot eye that Tebon took care of real quick! And after that was an enormous night-black beast, and Luminasa emerged as the brave victor! Fizzan defeated the next creature, a massive ice construct, and Atlanteax the next, which was a massive column of lava that took out poor Murp beforehand. And the last battle was fought by a real hero, that Kinshack fellow! From what I heard, it was right fit to be sung about by bards for years to come, and like everyone before him, he stood strong and honorable even when confronted by such a thing as that flaming black hellbeast. Thanks to him and all of those brave folks, Zerroth was put into a deep sleep that only Ulstram can waken him from. Thank you ever so much, all of those brave folks who came out to defend Solhaven! Kendryth's army, those fine soldiers from Hendor, the local army from Vornavis, and, oh my, all of the other wonderful militias and individuals who came out to lend a hand. Thanks to you, peace has returned! Bovese Nielle, Healer at Large
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ GRATITUDE GIVEN TO DEFENDERS ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 27th of Charlatos, 5104: Solhaven Solhaven lay blanketed in a mist that would not leave. Her streets glistened with water that would not drain properly and wind howled eerily through her walls. She was filled with citizens that would take up the blade, with warriors of spirit and heart. We had a plan, a means to defend our homes that would lead us to the very limit of our resources. We have pride, we have honor and we would not give up our streets so easily. Then, one night nearly a month gone by now, troops began to come to our cobbled streets to lend us aid in our time of need. Warriors and Healers traveled from the frozen plains of Aenatumgana, across the frozen spine still locked in winter's grip, past naval barricades on swift cutters, and from the volcanic isles across waters to our shores. They came in groups of two and three, at times trickling into our port city by thin dawn light. They came in groups of ten to twenty, their chants and cries of victory for our homes coming to us on the rain-laden wind. We could not have stood as long as we did had it not been for these brave men and women. And it is to them that I would express our gratitude for their aid. To the Second Militia, who trickled in over a week's time to lend us your aid, your help in the Ravine Tower was appreciated and will be remembered. To the Snarian Guard, Black Wolf Clan and the River's Rest Contingent (forgive us if your name was far too long for this humble person to do justice to), your aid in and on the field as well as in mobile towers and the Broken Tower Ballista Unit was greatly appreciated. To the entire Northern Fury, and the valiant men and women that make up their foot troops, mobile tower, Hangman's Tower and triage units which were an unyielding blur of duty and speed, our thanks. To House Onoir who manned the Hangman's Bridge, mobile units and the Western Road defenses, your bravery, organization and honor in combat has saved us. You have our gratitude. To the Silver Gryphons and Ardenai Knights, your cries for justice and freedom were always as loud as our own, your blades as swift and your speed to arms a blessing to our dark times. We give our humblest thanks. I would like to speak my undying thanks to the followers and members of House Sovyn for lending their aid to our triage units. Your forethought to create herbs for hours on end, your efficiency in watering for kept folks, calling your healing and clerical aid and dragging our injured out of danger was greatly appreciated. To the families of the brave men and woman that did not make it back from the field, you have our deepest sympathies and most heartfelt gratitude. Without their aid and sacrifice, so much more would have been lost. It was because of their blades being given to defend our hearth and homes that Freedom is still the air that we breathe in the Freeport. Anonymous

Solhaven is once again free of a yoke that would be placed about our heads and shackle us to a rule we do not wish. Troops from far and wide came to our aid the gates of Vornavis once more opened wide to allow the innocent shelter. Four days ago, we saw the minions of the Berserker Zerroth driven from our shores, our streets, and our homes. But we are not yet out of the woods. Danger still lurks in the dark of night, under veil of cloud and sky. The Prophet's words still linger in the air and they speak of the arrival of the Painlord of Mularos. We must again prepare to defend our homes. Though the fires have been extinguished and the streets have been cleaned, though the towers have been rebuilt and smoke begins to clear, we are still a town in great need. Supplies must be gathered, logs must be hauled in, and herbs must be foraged. We have stood before a great tide and have not broken -- do not let down your guard, sweet citizens of the Freeport. Remember what we have lost, remember what we have gained; keep your eyes to the sky, your ears to the ground. Our danger is not yet over. Guard well. Some Lieutenant of HERT

One child escapes, whether on his own or by Resistance help is unclear. Eryael sends an acolyte to Resistance leaders protecting the escaped child to barter for his return with the release of three other victims. Acolyte is slain by former ousted Dark Alliance member. Her reasoning is non-belief that there were other hostages. WEHNIMER'S LANDING: A recently hung and banned person ambushing youngsters in the surrounds of town, bent on mobilizing an army to eradicate Ashrim and Nalfein from the face of Elanthia, as well as certain scoffers on a revenge list. List includes a couple of organized groups of townsfolk and continues to be a festering thorn in the proverbial side. ELVEN NATIONS: Rumors of forbidden rituals that took place in the Glaes Cnoc Cemetery just prior to the invasions upon the Landing that superceded the Zerroth-lead siege in Solhaven have resurfaced recently. These rumors surface upon the sudden disappearance from Solhaven of one leading member of the Dark Alliance, who has been seen in the Nations most recently. Coincidence? What does this all mean? Where will this all lead? And more importantly, where is the fourth piece of the Griffon Sword? While Eryael is running rampant and unchecked in Solhaven, where is Lorminstra's prophet Ulstram? Where is Ronan's Paladin the Dreamwalker? Why have they remained silent for so long? Why has Maluevere sealed up the entrance to his airship which remains docked in Solhaven on the North Quay? What about the defacing of certain temples in Solhaven? The local government has issued five notices and is determined to exact punishment upon the perpetrators as the temples are public buildings. The city is struggling through this upon the flank of the siege and now the kidnappings by Eryael to remain an open freeport. A question of sorts was raised on how long will this current religious war continue or will it ever come to end? As with all things good or bad, right or wrong, light or dark - it will never really end. It will continue as long as there are zealots of the pantheons Lornon and Liabo, as long as there are followers of each, with differences in perspectives whether by culture, religion, appearances, and thoughts. With the struggle between the living and the undead there seems to be never-ending strife in Elanthia. Phantom Reporter
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ THE AVATAR OF MULAROS STRIKES FEAR IN SOLHAVEN ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 13 of Ivastaen, 5104: Solhaven For the last several days the Freeport of Solhaven has come to find a quiet uneasy peace, an exception to the norm that has helped put fear into the hearts of the city's men, women and children. The city, having successfully repulsed the attack and then siege of the V'tullian forces under the command of Zerroth, an avatar of V'tull, had believed itself finally free from the conflict surrounding the current war of the Gryphon Sword. This proved to be a false hope that was lost when the first victim was found, the first to be tortured by Eryael, the avatar of Mularos. While the details of this discovery are too despicable to go into in this medium to the people of Elanthia, the victim was a woman who was maimed beyond recognition and left in an extreme state of pain and suffering. And pain and suffering being exactly what Eryael sought to create in devotion to his Lornon God. Eryael himself has been known, especially to those who have fought for and against the Dark Alliance, for several years as a Painlord for his god. His appearance is deceiving, seeming to be very young with warm violet eyes, which are said to be bewitching. His skin is as white as a lily and long blonde hair falls to his waist. He commonly dresses himself in silk clothing that alternates between red and grey. Most notable of all in his appearance is that he is covered in scars. The symbol that Eryael identifies with is the thorny rose, and he often leaves rose petals at the locations of his wicked acts. For most of the month of Olaesta, Eryael has struck at the populace of the city, abducting more than a dozen citizens of the Freeport and returning them in various unimaginable states of torture. Strategies and response concerning Eryael's actions have resulted in a divided city and the Mercantile Guild labeling some 'fanatics of Liabo' for reprisals against the local shrine devoted to Mularos. However, the Mercantile Guild admits to so far being unable to apply any defense against Eryael, though they are in the process of seeking such. The last abduction by Eryael has proved his worse, in which he kidnapped three young girls who have yet to be returned, to the growing worry and animosity of the defenders of the city. Meanwhile, followers of the Dark Alliance, and supporters of Eryael's actions, have continued to harass and subject the city to their own deprivations despite being officially banished by the Mercantile Guild. An end is so far not in sight, and it is to anyone's guess when peace will finally return to the Freeport. Railien ta'Illoshien Blightstruck, Master of the Order.
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ THE RIGHT TO LIVE WITHOUT FEAR - AN EDITORIAL, PART I ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 13 of Ivastaen, 5104: Solhaven People of Solhaven, in the course of recent events, the tranquility and the peacefulness that is most commonly identified with life and liberty in your port has been lost due to the wicked ambitions of an alliance of Dark Gods. What these manifestations of Lornon desire, is not the matter that the free people of the Freeport should concern themselves with, but rather the loss of a liberty that they have every right to claim. The loss of the freedom to live without fear. The Freeport of Solhaven for countless years has been ruled by the Mercantile Guild. An organization of merchants, who have banded together and formed the basis of government in your city. They were not chosen by you, the people of Solhaven, nor were they born and raised like those of noble birth with the belief in a duty to protect the common-born. They sought to guide the port, not for the benefit of the people, but for the benefit of peace. That is an admirable goal, certainly, when not viewed with the reason behind the endeavors to sustain it. However, there is a reason behind it and it is an important one to note. Peace, the preservation of the lives and happiness of the people of Solhaven, provides for a stable environment for the commencement of economic exchange. Peace allows for merchants to make silver. It is not a peace, in which the Guild seeks to protect you, but their ability to fill their coffers and to make heavier their purses. In the history of your city, they have failed to act in anything but their own self interest. Rather than seek to keep the presence of those Dark Gods out of your city, they instead invited them in, going so far as to build with their own funding, shrines and temples for such malevolent beings to focus their wills upon. They claim that these gardens and shrines reduce the animosity of the Dark Gods, but certainly, they have provided a point of focus for these gods of Lornon, to find adherence and strength in your very city. Rather than combat this city's enemies, they seek to appease them, accepting a minimum of pain and suffering in exchange for enough peace for their money-making. (continued)
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ THE RIGHT TO LIVE WITHOUT FEAR - AN EDITORIAL, PART II ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Dateline: Day 13 of Ivastaen, 5104: Solhaven Where was the Guild when the enemies of the Freeport have posed a threat? Time and time again, they cower in their guild houses, protecting only their amassings of wealth, while they let you, the people, face such dangers alone. It was the people who fought and suffered under the forces of Sheru only a few years ago. When Zerroth, a servant of V'tull, sought to burn your very homes to the ground, it was not the Guild who fought to protect you, it was brave men and women of Vornavis and Hendor. The blood of the Empire ran in those days, soaking the earth that you walk and wetting the streets outside your homes, as they fought to preserve your right to live without fear. This brings to point, this message to you, the people of the Freeport. There is one entity that has concerned itself with your right to live without fear, your right to this liberty owed to you from the moment you are born. That entity is the Turamzzyrian Empire. From the city of Tamzyrr, the Empire has spread out to the distant Highmount and the Southron Wastes, and under the banners of such, her people live every day confident and assured in the liberty that the people of Solhaven so rightfully deserve. While Eryael, the servant of Mularos, has time and time again struck to inspire fear into your lives, by torturing and kidnapping innocents from men, women, and despicably, to children, the Guild has been unable or unwilling to stop him and stooping only, to chastise those who try. Meanwhile, it is behind the walls of Vornavis that those victims find peace, find help, and find rest, not behind the walls of the rich who compose the Mercantile Guild. It is in your hands, people of Solhaven, to claim for you the right to have the very liberty that you deserve. Only a wall separates you from this freedom from fear, and behind that wall is the man, the Baron, who can provide it. What is the point in claiming to be a Freeport, when you are no longer free to live without fear? Railien ta'Illoshien Blightstruck, Master of the Order.

He quietly gathered a group of adventurers and led them on a metaphysical journey into the mind of Eryael, avatar of Mularos. One can only imagine the horrors they encountered within the twisted brain of the rose-wielding priest. Could they hear the screams of his victims, the tormented weeping that he so treasured from his followers? What visions of pain and mutilation greeted them on this dread quest? Those of us fortunate enough to escape this quest may thankfully never know. Suffice it to say that the brave group managed to pass through all obstacles to the very center of Eryael's being. Once there, Ulstram was able to bind Eryael into a deep sleep. It appears that the pale priest has been neutralized, at least for a time. At the risk of losing our journalistic objectivity, we hope that it is a good long while indeed.
