Behind the Scenes
These were originally known as "dark wisplings." Wisplings were the weakest form of elemental in Rolemaster, which is the relevance of their flares. They are made of elemental darkness which inflicts cold criticals. (Darkness is not considered an elemental plane in the modern setting.) Their presence would be unnatural. They pre-date the "Describe" verb by a few years, giving rise to the misleading creature description. Dark wisplings are supposed to be spheres a few inches in diameter. The white vysans were made much later, after the I.C.E. Age ended. The opposing elemental counterpart for a dark wisplings would be light wisplings who inflict radiant and blindness damages.

These are not considered extraplanar beings in GemStone IV, have physical bodies, and do not have elemental energy drawn into soulstones when killed. They would have been what are now considered 1st Echelon elementals. Wyrdlings are the analogous concept. They may be much weaker versions of dark vorteces, which give elemental energy and inflict cold damages, if the dark vorteces were intended to be interpreted as dark elementals.
